These would be the first mRNA vaccines available in China. mRNA vaccines are generally considered to be the most efficient against the deadly virus.

Faced with a huge surge in cases following its easing of stringent zero-Covid restrictions, cities in China have also begun distributing free fever and cold drugs to the public, in order to deal with a spike in demand for the medicines.

As per Global Times, the market regulator in Sanya, South China's Hainan Province has distributed 73,030 fever medicines to local residents with plans to distribute more. Dongguan in South China's Guangdong Province will be distributing 100,000 ibuprofen tablets. &nbsp;Zhengzhou, Shangqiu, Zhoukou and a number of other cities have also handed out anti-epidemic drugs.

In response to a spike in coronavirus cases in some regions of the world, health minister Mansukh Mandaviya said on Thursday that states have been asked to concentrate on increased community surveillance, implement the necessary control and containment measures, and ensure coverage of precaution doses for Covid-19 vaccination.

Now the global concern around COVID situation in China has increased. In India, four cases have been found so far of BF.7, two cases each in Gujarat and Odisha. In Odisha, the Omicron BF.7 was detected in a sample testing on 30 September. As per&nbsp;Odisha Health and Family Welfare department cited by multiple media outlets, at the time of testing, BF.7 was neither a VOC (Variant of Concern) nor VOI (Variant of Interest).&nbsp;

<h2>Are vaccines effective on BF.7?</h2>

The virus has mutated many times over since the beginning of 2020. As per reports, the Omicron variants are known to evade the immune response from most vaccines currently in use however getting vaccination is still advisable as it prevents death, as per medical experts.&nbsp;

The virus can spread from an infected person’s mouth or nose in small liquid particles when they cough, sneeze, speak, sing or breathe. These particles range from larger respiratory droplets to smaller aerosols. It is important to practice respiratory etiquette, for example by coughing into a flexed elbow, and to stay home and self-isolate until you recover if you feel unwell.

Most people infected with the virus will experience mild to moderate respiratory illness and recover without requiring special treatment. However, some will become seriously ill and require medical attention. Older people and those with underlying medical conditions like cardiovascular disease, diabetes, chronic respiratory disease, or cancer are more likely to develop serious illness. Anyone can get sick with COVID-19 and become seriously ill or die at any age.&nbsp;

Just a week back,&nbsp;WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus had expressed hope that the COVID-19 emergency might be ending, turns out "the end is (not) in sight". Global health experts have warned the sudden surge China is experiencing represents a "wild card" and that we may be in a different phase of the pandemic.

This comes as around the globe, a potential end of the COVID-19 pandemic phase had raised hopes. In September, Tedros had said the "end is in sight" for the pandemic, but talking to the press last week, WHO Emergencies chief Mike Ryan said: "I think the world still has… work to do. The job is not done."

Talking to Reuters, Dutch virologist Marion Koopmans, who is part of the WHO committee tasked with advising on the status of the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/coronavirus">COVID</a> emergency said, "The question is whether you can call it post-pandemic when such a significant part of the world is actually just entering its second wave."

"It's clear that we are in a very different phase [of the pandemic], but in my mind, that pending wave in China is a wild card," she added.

Koopmans and her fellow advisory committee members are scheduled to submit their recommendation regarding the emergency status of the pandemic to the WHO chief in January.

This emergency designation is the global health agency's highest level of alert associated with disease outbreaks and is put in place to help international organisations prioritise funding and assistance for research, treatments and vaccine.

Experts have also warned that a domestic spread of the virus in China or elsewhere carries with it the risk of mutation. While currently, Chinese data accessed by WHO and the virus database GISAID shows the variants circulating in the nation are Omicron and its subvariants, in the absence of full data, the picture isn't clear.&nbsp;

Tom Peacock, a virologist at Imperial College, London said, "The bottom line is, it's not clear [if] the wave in China is variant-driven, or whether it just represents a breakdown of containment."&nbsp;

Another expert, an infectious disease specialist and WHO adviser, David Heymann warned, "I don't think anybody can predict for sure whether we could see new variants that might be a concern to the rest of the world, but clearly the world should be concerned if people are becoming sick and dying [in China]."&nbsp;

Speaking to BBC, epidemiologist Wu Zunyou has warned that China might experience three waves of Covid infection this winter. As per his estimates, the current spike might continue till mid-January, a second spike can happen around the Lunar New Year celebrations that begin on January 21, and the third wave could happen between late February and mid-March when people return to the office.

Wang Guangfa, a respiratory expert at China's Peking University First Hospital has also warned that the nation may face a surge in severe COVID-19 cases cases in the next two weeks.

"We must act quickly and prepare fever clinics, emergency and severe treatment resources," said Wang.

Last week, China began dismantling its stringent zero-Covid regulations that have been in place for close to three years and since then the nation has reported a significant rise in its number of cases and deaths, which given its 1.4 billion population are low, but remain alarming.

According to data obtained by the Guardian last month and assembled by HSBC bank, £29 million from PPE Medpro earnings was transferred to an offshore trust whose beneficiaries were Lady Mone and her three adult children, according to bank records.

PPE Medpro paid Mone's spouse, Isle of Man-based banker Douglas Barrowman, £70 million, at least £65 million of which came from the company's earnings from the two government contracts. The filings state that Barrowman subsequently made a number of payments from that cash, including the £29 million to Mone's trust.

A lawyer for Mone told the Guardian in response: “There are a number of reasons why our client cannot comment on these issues and she is under no duty to do so.”

Asserting that its gowns "passed quality inspection in China," PPE Medpro stated in a statement that it will "rigorously" defend the legal action. The company also accused the DHSC of making a "cynical" attempt to get its money back since it had significantly overordered PPE. The corporation claimed that the delivery of gowns came after the "successful" delivery of face masks under the first contract.

The Beijing government has largely praised its tough anti-virus measures for the low number of cases, but it was forcefully withdrawn last month after a string of protests complaining lack of movement across cities and difficulties in purchasing essential items.

But, experts fear that easing Covid measures could take the total number of deaths to more than a million.

Zhou Jiatong, head of the Center for Disease Control in southwestern Guangxi region, in a paper published last month by the Shanghai Journal of Preventive Medicine said that mainland China&nbsp;faces more than 2 million deaths if it eased on Covid curbs.

Similarly, a US-based organisation, the Institute of Health Metrics and Evaluation, has projected that by April 1, 2023, China could register 322,000 deaths, when the Covid cases peak.

Last week the city&nbsp;also scrapped a mandatory Covid mobile application that was required to check in to most venues such as gyms, beauty salons and schools.

Speaking to BBC epidemiologist Wu Zunyou has warned that the nation might undergo three waves of infection this winter. As per his estimates the current spike might continue till mid-January, a second spike can happen around the Lunar New Year celebrations that begin on January 21, and the third wave could happen between late February and mid-March when people return to the office.

In China where till recently stringent restrictions were the norm, vaccination isn't mandatory. This is because of signs that the public might push back against any such move.

Vaccinations developed overseas are not available to the general public in mainland china. Only inactivated shots Sinopharm, Sinovac's Coronavac and other domestically developed options are available.&nbsp;

"At least a half of doctors and educated people wanted to get the mRNA ones and refused to get the Chinese ones," said &nbsp;Kelly Lei, a doctor from Shenzhen.

With the neighbouring Chinese territory of Macau offering these mRNA vaccines, people are scrambling to get the jab. As a consequence, no bookings are available until January 21.&nbsp;

To combat a surge in Covid cases, China has given nod for the sale of Pfizer’s COVID-19 pill, Paxlovid, in the mainland.

It comes after Beijing decided to move away from its stringent ‘zero-Covid’ policy in the wake of protests.

Even though the official number of cases is less, long queues have been witnessed outside fever clinics, keeping the authorities on their toes.

Anticipating fresh Covid waves, the government has been pacing itself to vaccinate the most vulnerable, even as the World Health Organisation has raised concerns that China was not adequately vaccinated. &nbsp;

China Meheco Group, the healthcare platform which been selling the oral Covid drug, on Wednesday said that it has signed an agreement with Pfizer to import and distribute the medicine.

The agreement is valid between December 14 and November 30, 2023, China Meheco said in a filing to the Shanghai stock exchange, reports Reuters news agency.

Earlier, Paxlovid was made available through Chinese hospitals to treat high-risk patients in several provinces. But now, it is available for retail sale.

Earlier this week, China Meheco started selling Paxlovid in what appeared to be the first retail sale of the drug in the country. Within an hour, the two-drug oral treatement was sold out within half an hour.

Responding to the matter, White House Coronavirus Response Coordinator Dr Ashish Jha on Thursday said that the Biden administration "was not involved in any way" in the approval process and welcomed other countries benefiting from American innovation.&nbsp;

“Since the beginning of this administration, the president has been very clear that we think it’s really important for the world to benefit from the fruits of American scientific innovation," he said.

"The president’s been very clear. We stand ready to help any country that needs help in terms of vaccines, treatments, anything else. So, that offer stands globally for any country that could benefit," he added.&nbsp;
