One of the main ways to fight the spread of coronavirus is washing hands. But for many families in one of Mexico City's poorest neighbourhoods, this is not an option due to the lack of clean water.

In San Gregorio, poverty rates hover around 40 percent according to the latest government data. There are some places with no running water with which one can wash your hands, in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic.

It rains in Mexico City almost every day for six months per year. Yet years of poor city planning, a lack of infrastructure investment and corruption have led to severe water shortages.

Oil drum-sized blue plastic containers, often grouped together -- called "pipas" -- are used to deposit water, which is later used by the barrels' owners.

For families for who the amount of water does not last all day, people use the water for washing dishes and clothes, and buys drinking water. Each bottle of water costs 150 pesos.

As for the laundry, there are public washing stations.

Government data from 2018 shows that about 20 percent of Mexico City's population doesn't have access to water every day.

Coronavirus has claimed more than 730,000 cases and 76,430 deaths across the country.

Researchers have successfully tested "the world's first jet suit paramedic", which could transform how life-savers reach isolated casualty sites.

The Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS) on Tuesday said it had helped flight-test the 1,050 bhp (brake horsepower) jet suit in the Lake District National Park.

The trial saw Richard Browning, the founder of Gravity Industries which has pioneered the technology, fly from the bottom of a valley up to a simulated casualty site in 90 seconds -- compared to a 25-minute response time on foot.

Video of the simulated exercise shows Browning, wearing a helmet, goggles and red flight suit equipped with a jet pack-style device, powering off the ground and zooming through the air just above the surface of the rocky terrain.

Andy Mawson, GNAAS director of operations, said the charity chose the test location based on its call-out data and had little idea how the tech would fare in the real world.

Mawson added that at a time of strained healthcare provision because of the coronavirus pandemic, it was "important to still push the boundaries".

The ICMR's second sero-survey shows that Indian population is still far from achieving herd immunity against coronavirus infection, Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan said on Sunday while underlining the need for following COVID appropriate behaviour.

He also stressed that masks be worn even in places of worship.

During an interaction with his social media followers, the minister said the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) is actively researching on reports of COVID-19 reinfection and although the number of such cases is negligible at this moment, the government is fully seized of the importance of the matter, the health ministry said in a statement.

He cautioned that the sero-survey report should not create a sense of complacency among the people.

The first sero-survey of May 2020 had revealed that the nationwide prevalence of novel coronavirus infection was only 0.73 per cent.

"Even the soon to be released second sero-survey indications are that we are far from having achieved any kind of herd immunity which necessitates that all of us should continue following COVID appropriate behaviour," Vardhan said in response to the queries posed by his social media followers on 'Sunday Samvad' platform.

The health minister also dispelled fears regarding the phased opening of schools, and advised on proper protocol to be followed while visiting salons and hair spas, the ministry said.

He asked everyone to always raise awareness regarding COVID appropriate behavior which he himself does by stopping his car and asking non-compliant people to wear their masks, the statement said.

He re-emphasized on the need for wearing masks even in places of worship.

"The pandemic can only be fought when the government and society work in tandem," he was quoted as saying in the statement.

On the wide usage of investigational therapies such as plasma therapy and Remdesivir drug for combating COVID-19, Vardhan said the government has issued regular advisories regarding their rational usage and private hospitals have also been advised against routine use of these therapies.

The doctors in the states and UTs are being made aware of this through webinars and tele-consultation session of AIIMS, New Delhi, the statement stated.

On emerging evidence that COVID-19 infection not only impacts our lungs, but other organ systems too, especially cardiovascular and renal functions, the minister said the Ministry of Health has already set up committees of experts to look into these facets of the disease.

"ICMR is also actively investigating and researching reports of reinfection and although the number of reinfection cases is negligible at this moment, the government is fully seized of the importance of the matter," he said.

Vardhan stated that states/UTs have also been advised to lower the prices of COVID-19 tests.

In the early days of the pandemic, as the kits were imported, the price tended to be high.

But now, supplies of testing kits have stabilised and domestic production of these kits has commenced, the statement said.

He said his ministry has written to the states and Union territories to engage private laboratories at mutually agreeable lower rates.

He said he has spoken personally to several state health ministers regarding reduction in prices of testing in their respective states.

On a question related to 'Atma-nirbhar Bharat Yojana', the minister spoke of India's two-pronged strategy of incentivising production and creation of common infrastructure for high-quality medicines and medical devices to make the country self-reliant.

He said the government is ensuring that there is import substitution in this sector.

Vardhan said in the last few months since the outbreak of the pandemic, India had made rapid strides in the 'manufacturing of ventilators, PPEs, testing kits and many medical devices'.

On disparity in setting up AIIMS in different regions and only one for the entire North East, he talked about the Central Scheme Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY) aimed at correcting the regional imbalances in healthcare.

Other than setting up new AIIMS, the scheme also aims to upgrade the existing medical infrastructure in the entire country in a phased manner.

Under different phases of the scheme, the central government will establish new medical colleges attached with existing district and referral hospitals in Dhubri, Nagaon, North Lakhimpur, Diphu and Kokrajhar districts in Assam, Churachandrapur in Manipur West Garo Hills district in Meghalaya, Falkawan district in Mizoram, and Kohima and Mon in Nagaland.

Vardhan also stated that the Centre has added 29,185 MBBS seats in the last five years.

Responding to questions on strengthening the public health system, he talked about the Union government's commitment to "increase the public healthcare spending as a percentage of GDP from the existing 1.15 per cent to 2.5 per cent by 2025", which "will mean an actual increase of 345 per cent over the current share in this short period of time."

Ten months into the pandemic, the course of life of almost every human being on the planet has changed.

One million people have so far died; multiple countries have been pushed into recession; 100 million people are facing the risk of extreme poverty; and there is a threat to global development.

From education to tourism, everything has come to a standstill.

And it's time we punished the perpetrator of this "world war". Because this virus is the biggest threat to peace and life on earth.

And punishing the perpetrators of tragedies has been mandatory.

On September 11, 2001, al Qaeda terrorists carried out attacks in New York and Washington DC.

Over 2950 people were killed. The US responded by declaring a war on terror.

In 2011, al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden was hunted and killed. He was made to pay for his crimes.

Let's say the coronavirus outbreak was not a deliberate act. But an accident, a virus leak. Or just a pandemic about which China continued to lie.

This is criminal too.

In 2011, an accident at Japan's Fukushima nuclear plant killed 573 people. It was the second deadliest nuclear accident in history.

The company running the Fukushima nuclear plant was asked to pay damages worth 500 million yen.

The 1984 Bhopal Gas Tragedy killed 3,000 people.

The union carbide corporation was slapped with a settlement amount of $470 million dollars.

The most recent example can be of the Mauritius oil spill. A Japanese ship leaked more than 1,000 tonnes of fuel into the sea.

And the owner of the ship had to pay.

And as far as the blast in Beirut blast in August is concerned, more than 190 people were killed.

Thousands of homes and businesses were devastated, and Lebanon is being made to pay for it.

The president has signed a decree allocating 100 billion lebanese pounds ($66 million) as compensation.

In comparison, the coronavirus has done more damage to the world that any other calamity could do. It has permanently shut down countless businesses.

And they deserve compensation.

Not holding China accountable will be setting a wrong example. It would mean any rogue country can start a war or get away with criminal negligence, kill millions of people and businesses, and walk away with full impunity.

This is not how the global justice system works. And we need to set a precedent for our future generations to follow.

China must be punished at any cost.

The largest city in Brazil’s Amazon has closed bars and river beaches to contain a fresh surge of coronavirus cases, a trend that may dash theories that Manaus was one of the world’s first places to reach collective, or herd, immunity.

When a large portion of a community becomes immune to a disease, its spread becomes unlikely.

University of Sao Paulo researchers suggested that a drastic fall in COVID-19 deaths in Manaus pointed to collective immunity at work, but they also believe that antibodies to the disease after infection may not last more than a few months.

Local authorities on Friday enforced a 30-day ban on parties and other gatherings, and restricted restaurant and shopping hours, a setback for the city of 1.8 million after the worst of the pandemic seemed to be behind them.

In April and May, so many Manaus residents were dying from COVID-19 that its hospitals collapsed and cemeteries could not dig graves fast enough. The city never imposed a full lockdown. Non-essential businesses were closed but many simply ignored social distancing guidelines.

Then in June, deaths unexpectedly plummeted. Public health experts wondered whether so many residents had caught the virus that it had run out of new people to infect.

Research posted last week to medRxiv, a website distributing unpublished papers on health science, estimated that 44% to 66% of the Manaus population was infected between the peak in mid-May and August.

The study by the University of Sao Paulo’s Institute of Tropical Medicine tested newly donated banked blood for antibodies to the virus and used a mathematical model to estimate contagion levels. The high infection rate suggested that herd immunity led to the dramatic drop in cases and deaths, the study said.

Daily burials and cremations fell from a peak of 277 on May 1 to just 45 in mid-September, according to the mayor’s office. The COVID-19 death toll that officially peaked at 60 on April 30 dropped to just two or three a day by the end of August.

Now the numbers are on the rise again.

The study’s lead researcher, Ester Sabino, declined to be interviewed for this article because the Manaus herd immunity study awaits peer review for publication.

Authorities warned Manaus residents they were ignoring the virus and risked a second wave of contagion by not wearing masks, packing into bars and attending parties. They shut down Manaus’ river beachfront where raves were being held.

Manaus Mayor Arthur Virgilio blamed right-wing President Jair Bolsonaro, who has minimized the gravity of the pandemic, for encouraging a return to normal life and work instead of waiting for a vaccine to be developed.

“The government must take this seriously and speak the truth. If it says there is no problem, that encourages people to ignore our decrees,” the mayor told Reuters in an interview.

Epidemiologist Dr. André Patricio Almeida, of the Adventist Hospital of Manaus, said cases are rising again mostly among younger, wealthier people who go to bars who show milder symptoms but often infect older relatives who need to be treated in hospital.

Almeida said too little is known about COVID-19 and whether re-infection is possible to verify if herd immunity was reached in Manaus, but some short-lived immunity probably had been attained.

“There could be immunity that does not last for long,” Mayor Virgilio agreed.

The Sao Paulo University study said coronavirus antibodies appeared to wane after just a few months, which could explain the resurgence in Manaus.

“Something that became evident in our study - and that is also being shown by other groups - is that antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 decay quickly, a few months after infection,” one of its authors, Leis Buss, said in a statement by the São Paulo research foundation FAPESP that accompanied the paper.

“This is clearly occurring in Manaus,” Buss said.

UK's Prince Charles has issued an urgent plea in favour of the youth. He fears the youth are being severely impacted by the coronavirus pandemic.

Prince Charles said that at least 1 million young people could be in urgent need of help as he reflected upon the work of his Trust charity in this area over nearly 45 years.

He wrote this in an article for 'The Sunday Telegraph'.

"Over all these years since the Trust was launched, there has never been an easy time. However, there has never been a time as uniquely challenging as the present, when the pandemic has left perhaps another million young people needing urgent help to protect their futures," he wrote.

"The task ahead is unquestionably vast, but it is not insurmountable," he said.

He compared the current crisis to "other times when hope was scarce", citing the concerns over youth unemployment in the 1970s. He, notably, had then set up the Prince's Trust to help people aged between 11 and 30 seek employment opportunities and life skills.

He also reflected on the Young People Relief Fund set up by the Trust to provide extra support to young people affected by the impact of the virus.

"As we face the task before us, our experience ever since those days of the 1970s shows us that we have a model that works, that we have the skills and knowledge and organisation to make a crucial difference, and that we have the help of so many generous supporters who make it all possible," he said.

"Most of all, we know that each of the young people we seek to help has the potential to achieve great things, just like those who have gone before have proved, a million times over," he concluded.

The Prince of Wales had to go into self-isolation in March after testing positive for coronavirus.

In studies related to the novel coronavirus, scientists and researchers are now focussing on tinier particles, the ones that spread more like cigarette smoke.

These particles, they say, are carried by wisps of air and even upward drafts caused by the warmth of our bodies. They can linger in the air for minutes to hours.

For these particles, called aerosols, “6 feet is not a magic distance,” they say. It’s still important to keep one’s distance from others.

The World Health Organisation, which had long dismissed a danger from aerosols except in the case of certain medical procedures, has also agreed that aerosol transmission of the coronavirus can’t be ruled out in cases of infection within crowded and poorly ventilated indoor spaces.

In fact, researchers now say infection by aerosols is happening a lot more than people initially were willing to think. A key piece of evidence are the so-called “superspreader” events where one infected person evidently passed the virus to many others in a single setting.

There could be another way for tiny particles to spread. They may not necessarily come directly from somebody’s mouth or nose, they say.

Wearing a mask is still important, and making sure it fits snugly. Duration of exposure is also important.

Bhanakpur Village, on the outskirts of the National Capital Region, is representative of a larger rural landscape that's being altered by dint of proximity to large urban spaces. Bhanakpur's struggle during the coronavirus lockdown typified the challenges faced by a village in which residents' livelihoods have become irretrievably bound to a city.

LOCKDOWN DIARIES—Episode 2: Bhanakpur Village, Haryana

Protesters at a central London anti-lockdown rally scuffled with police on Saturday as officers tried to break up the demonstration because it had failed to follow social distancing rules.

Chanting “Freedom” and carrying banners saying “We Do Not Consent” and “COVID 1984”, thousands of people had crammed into Trafalgar Square to protest against the coronavirus pandemic restrictions.

Video footage showed officers briefly using batons to drive the protesters back.

The police, who said some officers had been hurt, ordered the protest to disperse because demonstrators had failed to socially distance or wear masks, meaning it was no longer exempt from the national rules that limit gatherings to six people.

“We want to be clear, this protest is no longer exempt from the regulations,” the Metropolitan Police said on Twitter. “We are asking those attending to disperse. Sadly, some officers have been injured while engaging with people.”

Saturday’s demonstration followed a similar event last weekend when 32 people were arrested for offences including violent disorder and assaulting an emergency worker. Two officers suffered minor injuries at that protest.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson tightened COVID-19 restrictions this week, telling people to work from home if they can and ordering pubs and restaurants to close early after cases started to rise again.

The United Kingdom recorded 6,042 new cases of COVID-19, official figures showed on Saturday, and 34 new deaths among those who tested positive for the virus within 28 days.

China developed Coronavirus vaccine could get nod this year

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Saturday urged world leaders to unite against the coronavirus pandemic, adding it has frayed the bonds between nations.

Johnson, who made the remarks in a pre-recorded speech to the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), said that, nine months into the pandemic, "the very notion of the international community looks tattered."

He also announced a "five-point" plan to tackle future pandemics in his address to the UN General Assembly. He also announced new funding to international vaccine efforts and the World Health Organisation (WHO).

The prime minister, who required intensive care treatment after catching the virus in March, has faced criticism at home for his own handling of the crisis.

At the UNGA, Johnson set out a plan for preventing another global pandemic, including a network of zoonotic research labs around the world to identify dangerous pathogens before they leap from animals to humans.

He also committed 500 million pounds (USD 636 million) through the global COVAX vaccine-procurement pool to help 92 of the world's poorest countries obtain a coronavirus vaccine, should one become available.

He pledged £340 million ($433 million, 372 million euros) over the next four years to the WHO -- a 30 percent increase.

"Never again must we wage 193 separate campaigns against the same enemy," he said.

"Never in the history of our species, not since the Almighty felled the Tower of Babel, has the human race been obsessed with one single topic of conversation," Johnson told the Assembly in a virtual address.

He said the pandemic had "united humanity as never before" but had also been an "extraordinary force of division" as nations vied with each other over supplies of medical equipment.

"After nine months of fighting Covid, the very notion of the international community looks tattered," he added.

"Unless we unite and turn our fire against our common foe, we know that everyone will lose.

"Now is the time therefore... for humanity to reach across borders and repair these ugly rifts."

He pledged to use Britain's upcoming presidency of the G7 next year to "bring the world back together after Covid".

Johnson's new funding plan has been developed in consultation with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the British scientific research charity the Wellcome Trust.

It includes a proposal to develop a worldwide network of hubs to identify pathogens before they leap from animals to humans.

Other measures include boosting capacity for treatments and vaccines, improving early warning systems and agreeing international protocols for health crises.

"There is a moral imperative for humanity to be honest and reach a joint understanding of how the pandemic began, how it was able to spread," he said.

"I simply believe as a former Covid patient that we all have a right to know so that we can collectively do our best to prevent another recurrence."

Britain hosted a conference in June which saw $8.8 million pledged for the global vaccines alliance Gavi to help immunisation programmes disrupted by the pandemic.

"However great the need for reform, the WHO is still the one body that marshalls humanity against the legions of disease," he said.

"The pandemic has been an immense psychic shock to the human race.

"Never again must we launch 193 different campaigns against the same enemy," added Johnson, insisting that Britain was "the right country to give that lead and we will do so in 2021".

Almost 42,000 people testing positive for the virus in Britain have died, and Johnson this week announced further restrictions following a sharp rise in cases.
