Who should get tested for coronavirus?

China has cancelled permits for Mount Everest because of the coronavirus, expedition organisers said Thursday, ahead of the spring climbing season on the world's highest peak.

Last year's traffic-clogged spring window saw a record 885 people summit Everest, 644 of them from Nepal and 241 from the northern flank in Tibet.

The Nepal side remains open for now although some expedition operators have seen cancellations and climbers have been asked to submit a 14-day travel history and medical reports.

The Chinese authorities "have informed us that the mountain will close from the north side," Lukas Furtenbach of Austria-based Furtenbach Adventures said.

Furtenbach said that he will be shifting his 11 clients to Nepal.

Tourist areas in Tibet have been closed since January, according to the local tourism office. The China Tibet Mountaineering Association, which issues permits for Everest, was not reachable.

Another company, Alpenglow Expeditions, has cancelled its Everest plans.

"I am in agreement with China's decision. It is responsible... Climbing a mountain is not currently worth the transmission risk in the Base Camps, nor upon returning home," Adrian Ballinger of Alpenglow Expeditions said in a statement Wednesday.

Some companies in Nepal have also seen cancellations.

"We had bookings from 23 climbers, but two groups have already cancelled. We might have just 8 to 10 climbers this year," said Pasang Tenje Sherpa of Pioneer Adventure.

A Nepali team, specialised in fixing the climbing route, is currently on its way to the base camp to begin fixing ropes on Everest.

Everest attracts hundreds of mountaineers from all over the world each spring, when a window of good weather opens up between late April and the end of May, prompting a rush for the summit.

Nepal has so far seen one confirmed case of the coronavirus.

It has suspended visas on arrival for visitors from eight countries badly hit, meaning they have to apply beforehand and submit a health certificate.

China shuts down Mount Everest due to coronavirus fears

The world health organisation has now categorised the novel coronavirus as a pandemic. The Covid-19 virus was till now categorised as an epidemic.

While the WHO chief, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said that the change of categorisation doesn't change the body's assessment of the threat posed by the virus, WION will explain to you what is the difference between an epidemic and a pandemic. And how it could change the way the world tackles the deadly virus.

The differences between an epidemic and pandemic is based on the geographic area and the number of people under its influence.

What is a epidemic?

Simply put, when any disease spreads in a region and infects its residents it is categorised as an epidemic.

The world health organisation defines an epidemic as — the occurrence in a community or region of cases of illness. Clearly above normal expectancy.

An epidemic is a term used in a regional context.

Going by this definition, the coronavirus outbreak is an epidemic in several nations. Like the worst affected nations of China, Italy and South Korea.

What is a pandemic?

It is an elevation to the epidemic. As per the definition given by ''a dictionary of epidemiology'' which is the standard reference for epidemiologists.

A pandemic is — '' an epidemic occurring worldwide, or over a very wide area, crossing international boundaries and usually affecting a large number of people''.

To put it in perspective ''pandemic'' is a term used in a global sense. When a disease has a worldwide presence.

While a ''pandemic'' sounds much scarier than epidemic it is important to remember that the difference is based on the geographic extent and the number of patients infected.

It's important to keep in mind that in theory categorisation as a pandemic does not talk about the seriousness of diseases.

Practically and with the situation on the ground. An epidemic could be much more deadly than a pandemic.

The coronavirus, even though a pandemic now. Remains a virus with a very less death rate worldwide.

World health organisation director-general has urged people to remain calm and also said that this categorisation should not result in the spread of unreasonable fear.

A 76-year-old suspected COVID-19 patient died in Karnataka on Wednesday. The Karnataka state health department is yet to confirm if the patient died of virus infection.

The deceased's samples were collected on March 9 and the results of the same are awaited. If the tests come out to be positive, it would mark the country's first fatality due to the deadly virus.

The patient had travelled to Saudi Arabia in January and had returned to Kalburgi, via Hyderabad, on February 29. On March 5th he started developing symptoms and was admitted to a private hospital in Kalburgi. The patient displayed symptoms of pneumonia, asthma, fever and high BP.

On March 9 his relatives decided to shift him to another hospital in Hyderabad. However, when the hospital did not admit him and he passed away on his way back to Kalburgi. It is unclear why the hospital did not admit him while taking his samples for testing.

''Yes, the private hospital should be blamed. They would not have taken into consideration the epidemiological history of the patient. They have assumed it is not coronavirus,'' said a health department official.

Meanwhile, the Karnataka State Health Department also released a list of regulations under the Epidemic Diseases Act of 1897.

The Karnataka Epidemic Diseases, Covid-19 Regulations, 2020 makes it stringent for patients -- symptomatic or asymptomatic with a travel history to affected countries to be screened. The regulations also give district administration the authority to seal off geographical areas which have been found to be contaminated with the virus. It also says that a penalty will be imposed on anyone found to be violating the regulations.

A scientific model has predicted that the coronavirus outbreak will hit its peak in the next winter season.

Scientists from the universities in Basel and Stockholm have warned that even if the transmission from the virus can fall during the summer before rising again in winter.

The new model analyzed the effects of seasonal variation on COVID-19 and suggests that the prevalent strain of the novel coronavirus could infect 100 times more people.

It states that we are currently experiencing "small peak in early 2020 in temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere" which will be followed by "a larger peak in winter 2020-21".

According to Dr Emma Hodcroft, a lead scientist of the model, the model focused on the ''general message that there could be substantially more cases if there is a seasonal affect''.

Based on other coronaviruses, the researchers believe the transmission rate will indeed drop as we head into spring and summer but then rise again, infecting as many as 100 million people in total.
