‘CEC has become a puppet’: Kharge demands Gyanesh Kumar’s removal, lists 5 demands

Leaders of the INDIA bloc held a key meeting in New Delhi on Monday (Jun 8), where alliance chairperson and Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge urged opposition parties to remain united against what he called the Centre’s “misgovernance” and continued challenges to constitutional values. In his opening remarks, Kharge also slammed the government over SIR and the economy during the meeting.Praising the unity, Kharge said, “This group came into existence almost exactly three years ago. I do not wish to speak at length, because the issues before us are well known to all of you. On April 17, 2026, we demonstrated our unity and solidarity in the Lok Sabha in a very decisive manner, when we all came together firmly to defeat the Modi government's malicious bills on delimitation.”He urged alliance partners to build on that unity, claiming “misgovernance” by the government on key issues, including political, economic, social and foreign policy. Speaking on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, Kharge alleged that the exercise was depriving millions of citizens of their voting rights. He also accused the Centre of undermining constitutional principles and misusing investigative agencies to pressure and target opposition leaders, while claiming that non-BJP state governments faced discrimination.“Due to SIR, the voting rights of our millions of people are being stripped away. The assault on the Constitution continues unabated. Investigative agencies are being persistently used as tools to harass, intimidate, and bully political opponents. Discrimination is being meted out against non-BJP governments,” he said. The Congress president further criticised the government’s economic management, saying that prices of essential goods were rising and economic growth was “negative”.He said, “Prices of essential goods are continuously rising, and the economic environment is extremely negative. New investments are not coming in at the pace required to generate new jobs. Private monopolies are growing in many sectors, and the future of MSMEs is in serious crisis.”Kharge also expressed concern over the examination system, alleging that repeated irregularities were hurting the aspirations of young people seeking educational and employment opportunities.“Due to the complete mismanagement of the examination system, the hopes and aspirations of our lakhs of youth are being betrayed. Atrocities against the weaker sections of society, especially in BJP-ruled states, continue relentlessly.”Speaking on foreign policies, he added, “Our foreign policy has been completely compromised, and those traditional values that India has long staunchly supported have not been upheld.”

INDIA bloc meeting: Kharge criticises government over SIR, economy, foreign policy

Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge said on Wednesday, the eve of the special three-day session to push for implementation of the women’s reservation bill, that the opposition's INDIA bloc has decided to vote against the legislation, citing opposition to the delimitation exercise and calling it ‘politically motivated’.“We all are in favour of the Women’s Reservation Bill. But the way in which they have brought it, we have reservations about that. It is politically motivated,” Kharge said at a press conference after a meeting of opposition parties at his residence. During the special three-day sitting of Parliament from April 16 to 18, amendments to the ‘Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam’, commonly known as the Women’s Reservation Act, mandating 33 per cent reservation for women in Lok Sabha and state Assemblies, will be brought for implementation in 2029.The Congress said that the extent of damage to parliamentary democracy is “enormous” when the intent behind a bill is “mischievous” and its content “devious”. Also Read: Iran threatens shipping in Persian Gulf, Red Sea, and Gulf of Oman if US naval blockade continues

We support the Women's Reservation Bill, but the way this government has brought it is politically motivated.
Lok Sabha seats to go up from 543 to 850
As per the draft bill, Lok Sabha seats will be increased to up to 850 from the current 543 to “operationalise” the women’s reservation law in 2029, after a delimitation exercise to be carried out based on the 2011 Census. Seats would also be increased in state and UT assemblies to accommodate a 33 per cent reservation for women. The government proposes to delink the reservation from the requirement of a fresh census and subsequent delimitation. It plans to introduce a Delimitation Bill, 2026, to redraw constituency boundaries based on 2011 census data instead of waiting for new population figures. All parties should unite and fight in Parliament. We will oppose this bill, but we are not against reservation (for women),” he said. Under Article 368, the amendment requires a majority of the total membership of the House and a two-thirds majority of members present and voting. To pass a constitutional amendment, the government needs a special majority—two-thirds of those present and voting, plus at least 50% of the total house strength. If they vote together, they can easily prevent the government from reaching the 364-mark.The government could still pass the bills if opposition members abstain or walk out, which would lower the total number of members “present and voting,” thereby reducing the absolute number of votes needed for a two-thirds majority. On Wednesday, the government unveiled three bills, including the Constitution Amendment Bill and the Delimitation Bill, through which the process to carve out new seats and redefine the borders of the existing ones would be carried out. One point of conflict on the issue is the North vs South divide, as North India benefits more with significant population growth while South India gets seats due to lower population growth rate.

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge said the party firmly believes that the BJP is attempting to weaponise the SIR process for vote-chori. "And if the EC chooses to look the other way, that failure is not just administrative - it becomes a complicity of silence"

All India Congress Committee (AICC) President Mallikarjun Kharge was admitted to a hospital in Bengaluru on Wednesday morning for medical treatment. Meanwhile, Kharge is scheduled to visit Kohima on October 7 and address a public rally at Naga Solidarity Park. Lok Sabha MP S Supongmeren Jamir, President of the Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee, made the announcement during a press conference at Congress Bhavan in Kohima. According to Jamir, Congress expects a gathering of at least 10,000 people for the rally. The event, themed around "Safe Democracy, Safe Secularism, and Safe Nagaland," will also highlight key issues such as youth employment, entrepreneurship, good governance, and road connectivity. The statement said that the rally will be followed by separate meetings between Kharge and senior members of the Congress Political Affairs Committee, Pro-Committee, and presidents of the District Congress Committees (DCCs). The Congress MP emphasised that the rally is not only a party function but also a political platform to address challenges facing Nagaland and the Northeast. He appealed to citizens, especially minorities, to join the rally and voice their concerns, which he said would be carried forward by regional leaders. Kharge will be accompanied by national leaders, including Congress General Secretary (Organisation) KC Venugopal and the party's Nagaland in-charge, MP from Odisha, Saptagiri Sankar Ulaka, and other leaders. Jamir underlined that the rally is the beginning of a broader Congress campaign in the region, with the party taking a firm stand on issues such as the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA), governance, and constitutional rights. He noted that the Congress high command is serious about addressing these concerns and may invite other political parties to join the movement on a common platform to safeguard democracy, secularism, and the future of Nagaland. Akuonuo Miachieo, Co-Convener of the Organising Committee and General Secretary of the Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC), appealed for cooperation and encouraged all citizens to ensure that the rally's message reaches every household in Nagaland. Disclaimer: This story has been published from a news agency feed with minimal edits to adhere to WION's style guide. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge strongly criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his Independence Day speech and mentioned him as “very dangerous man” who should be removed from power. Speaking at an opposition rally in Sasaram in Bihar, Kharge attacked the Prime Minister for praising the RSS during his address from the Red Fort. He said that as long as the BJP remains in power, people’s votes and rights will not be safe. He alleged that the RSS opposed India’s freedom struggle and questioned PM Modi for praising such groups. He further added that none of their members went to jail during the independence movement, instead, they sought jobs under the British. "None of your people went to jail (during the freedom struggle)... They were giving applications to the Britishers for jobs. They said that they would remain with them (Britishers). If PM Modi is taking the names of such people from the Red Fort, then what would the souls of those who fought for our freedom be saying today?" Kharge said, according to HT.

India: Kharge slams BJP for undermining Constitution, institutions in his Republic Day address

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Wednesday dissolved the entire Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) unit in Himachal Pradesh along with the district and block units with immediate effect.

The move is seen as part of the Congress’ plan to restructure the Himachal unit of the party. There has been no change in the PCC ever since the Congress formed its government in the hill state.

Outgoing president of Himachal Pradesh Congress Pratibha Singh has already become a member of the Congress Working Committee (CWC), the highest decision-making body of the party. Singh, who is wife of former chief minister Virbhadra Singh, was appointed as state Congress chief in 2022.
