Australia: Eight people placed in induced coma after suspected overdose of MDMA at music festival

An Indian-origin student in Australia is currently in a medically induced coma following an assault. A suspect, identified as 25-year-old Benjamin Dodge Collings, has been taken into custody and charged with criminal assault. The incident occurred on November 5 at a precinct in Tasmania, where the student, in his 20s, pursuing a master's degree at the University of Tasmania, was attacked around 4.20 am local time.

The victim was promptly taken to the Royal Hobart Hospital in Hobart, Tasmania, after the assault.

Reports indicate that he suffered 'extradural bleeding,' leading to a shift in his brain. Additionally, his right lung collapsed. This demanded several hours of brain surgery.

In response to questions about the measures taken by the university, Ben Wild reportedly mentioned the limitations due to the ongoing legal proceedings, stating, "The case has gone through the court system as well, and we are very limited in what we can say."

However, the government authorities claimed that Geravand's blood pressure suddenly dropped and denied any "physical or verbal altercations" happened between her and other passengers. 
 
The rights groups, meanwhile, claimed that the teenage girl was critically wounded after members of Iran's morality police allegedly assaulted her.

The doctors were quoted as saying by Iran's Tasnim news agency on Saturday that Garawand had "suffered a fall resulting in brain damage followed by continued convulsions, a decline in brain oxygen and a cerebral oedema after a sudden drop in blood pressure".

However, in early August, Messina Denaro was moved to the inmate ward of the local hospital where his condition has declined in recent days. According to media reports, he is now in an “irreversible coma”.&nbsp;

The medics have stopped feeding him and he has asked not to be resuscitated, reported news agency AFP.&nbsp;

Sicilian mafia boss and ‘last godfather’ Matteo Messina Denaro ‘in coma’: Reports

In a study published Monday in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, researchers report that two of four comatose dying patients experienced a surge in brain activity that resembles consciousness after they were taken off ventilators and their hearts had stopped.

Scientists have now found 'conscious-like' brain activity in the brains of dying patients. This finding is likely to give us more insight into the process of death.&nbsp;

The study has been published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, as reported by The Guardian.

“How vivid experience can emerge from a dysfunctional brain during the process of dying is a neuroscientific paradox,” said Jimo Borjigin, of the University of Michigan “We saw potential neuro-signatures of consciousness.” 
 
Borjigin, who led the study, was quoted by The Guardian.

The study analysed the data obtained from four patients who died in hospital while their brains were being monitored with the help of EEG machine. These patients had previously suffered seizures. All of them were in coma and were deemed to be beyond medical help.

Life support was withdrawn after their families consented.

The researchers focussed on the data from the time the life-support was removed and the patients died.

It was observed that two of the patients had increased heart rate after the life support was withdrawn. Also, their brains showed increased gamma wave activity. The gamma wave activity is reportedly associated with consciousness.

Additionally, the gamma wave activity was observed in the so-called 'hot zone' of the brain that is linked with consciousness.

Bojigin, who led the study, suggested that this might mean that the patients were 'internally awakened'.

The other two patients did not show such a brain activity.

As per the report in The Guardian, scientists opined it was not possible to accurately tell at this point what subjective experience the brain activity translated into.

On day to be taken off life support, woman wakes up from COVID-19-induced coma

Doctors in the Southern Indian City of Chennai successfully performed a live-donor liver transplant on a 26-year old, who was comatose after suffering acute liver failure. What made this medical procedure even more complicated for the patient and the operating doctors was the fact that he had tested COVID-19 positive. This meant heightened the risk for Doctors and healthcare staff of the MGM Hospital, who were to attend to this patient and perform surgery and related procedures.

The patient Ragul Gandhi was physically fit and a Kabaddi Player but had lapsed into a comatose state, two days after his liver failed. Once he tested COVID-19 positive, it was also clear to medical professionals that he had only about 48 hours to live, without an emergency liver transplant.

Luckily for the patient, his own brother had agreed to be the live donor, at a time (COVID-19 pandemic) when there are hardly any cadavers available for giving a lease of life. The donor was brought to the Chennai hospital and found suitable for the procedure.&nbsp;

Clad in full-body PPE suits, two teams with a total of 50 (fully vaccinated) medical professionals performed the 12-hour procedure in two separate Operation Theaters - one for the COVID-19 positive patient and another for the donor. Special filters and technology were used to ensure that the doctors don’t get infected with Covid-19, owing to the long duration of exposure. According to the hospital, none of the doctors or healthcare staff tested positive, after this procedure.

The patient has been discharged after surgery and is recuperating from home, he has also defeated COVID-19. Doctors of MGM healthcare said that he would be able to live a normal life post-transplant and could even resume playing Kabaddi in about a year’s time.

When asked about the causes of such sudden acute liver failure in a young and fit sportsman, Senior Transplant surgeon Dr Thaigarajan Srinivasan of MGM Healthcare said that liver failure suddenly happens in previously normal patients. “In our part of the world, the commonest causes of acute liver failure are overdose of anti-tubercular drugs. It could be the overdose of drugs meant for Hepatitis A, E, B or even some Ayurvedic medicines. In this case, it was an accidental overdose” he told Zee media.&nbsp;

Once he tested COVID-19 positive, it was also clear to medical professionals that he had only about 48 hours to live, without an emergency liver transplant. Luckily for the patient, his own brother had agreed to be the live donor, at a time (COVID-19 pandemic) when there are hardly any cadavers available for giving a lease of life. The donor was brought to the Chennai hospital and found suitable for the procedure. Clad in full-body PPE suits, two teams with a total of 50 (fully vaccinated) medical professionals performed the 12-hour procedure in two separate Operation Theaters - one for the COVID-19 positive patient and another for the donor. Special filters and technology were used to ensure that the doctors don’t get infected with Covid-19, owing to the long duration of exposure. According to the hospital, none of the doctors or healthcare staff tested positive, after this procedure. The patient has been discharged after surgery and is recuperating from home, he has also defeated COVID-19. Doctors of MGM healthcare said that he would be able to live a normal life post-transplant and could even resume playing Kabaddi in about a year’s time. When asked about the causes of such sudden acute liver failure in a young and fit sportsman, Senior Transplant surgeon Dr Thaigarajan Srinivasan of MGM Healthcare said that liver failure suddenly happens in previously normal patients. “In our part of the world, the commonest causes of acute liver failure are overdose of anti-tubercular drugs. It could be the overdose of drugs meant for Hepatitis A, E, B or even some Ayurvedic medicines. In this case, it was an accidental overdose” he told Zee media.
