Gavin Schmidt, director of NASA's Goddard Institute for space studies, has said that July is likely to be the hottest month the earth has experienced in hundreds, if not thousands, of years. This announcement was made during a meeting at NASA's Washington headquarters, which brought together agency climate experts, NASA's administrator Bill Nelson, and senior climate adviser Kate Calvin. As the climate crisis unfolds, a persistent heatwave has scorched parts of the US south, and extreme weather events, such as deadly floods and Canadian wildfire smoke, have underscored the urgent need for climate action. Unprecedented changes and rising temperatures The global temperature analysis by NASA indicated that June was the hottest month on record. Schmidt emphasised that the observed changes, while shocking, are not surprising to scientists. Over the past four decades, temperatures have shown a continuous increase, leading to unprecedented changes worldwide, as reported by the Guardian. 2023 on track to be hottest year on record Schmidt's calculations suggest that earth has a 50 per cent chance of setting a new temperature record in 2023, while other models project an 80 per cent chance.. Scientists anticipate that 2024 will be even hotter due to the El Niño weather pattern, which has a tendency to boost global temperatures and may peak toward the end of this year. The battle to douse wildfires in Greece saw some success after razing swathes of forest and dozens of homes in the past few days. Throughout the last decade, mega wildfires like these have become routine news. Unprecedented fires have burned millions of hectares of land and displaced hundreds of thousands of people.

Waves of torrential rainstorms led to flash floods in the United State's Kentucky. High-water rescue groups pulled people from homes and vehicles amid floods. Rescuers continue the search for two children who were swept away by a wall of violent waters.

A powerful storm, along with heavy rain and strong winds, hit Balkan nations on Wednesday. At least five were killed and dozens injured in Croatia, Bosnia, and Slovenia. It is the second storm to hit the region in two days, after a string of extremely hot and dry days.

It was just two weeks ago when Chicago had the worst air quality. Thanks to smoke blown in from the Canadian wildfires. With the Canada fires expected to burn all summer and into the fall, climate change experts believe New York, Chicago and other u.S. Cities might be engulfed in smoke again soon.

Clean-up efforts are underway in Vermont after the north-eastern US faced heavy rainfall and flash floods. But the worst may not be over. Volunteers & firefighters are preparing for more rains & storms. Members of the national guard are bracing to assist with more rescue and relocation work. Desc: this may come as a surprise or a shock, but it is true. Daffodil flowers could be a secret weapon in the fight against climate change. How? You may wonder. Well, the answer is simple. Extracts from daffodil plants, when added to cow feed, reduce the amount of methane cows produce. Half of the united kingdom's methane emissions are estimated to come from cows. As per reports, methane is the second most common greenhouse gas after CO2.

A study based on the data collected by China’s Zhurong Mars rover shows evidence that the planet underwent a major shift around 400,000 years ago which also coincides with the end of the last glacial period. The study was published in the journal, Nature, last week.

What was the research about?

The study was conducted by a team of scientists from the National Astronomical Observatories, Institute of Geology and Geophysics and Institute of Tibetan Plateau Research of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in collaboration with Brown University, United States.

The researchers used the Mars rover’s instruments as well as high-resolution observations from the Chinese Tianwen-1 Mars orbiter to study the large sand dunes near where Zhurong landed around two years ago.

The team of scientists led by Li Chunlai from the National Astronomical Observatories studied the surface structure and chemical composition of Martian dunes to determine their age as well as wind directions at different locations near the Chinese Mars rover.

While previous studies suggested that the Martian climate changed over the years, it had been difficult to directly measure and sample the geological formations on Mars which limited the scientists’ ability to better understand the planet’s climate processes.

The phenomenon of the crescent shape of dunes eroding over hundreds of thousand years and long dark ridges, called transverse aeolian ridges (TARs) which form on top of those dune fields, has been observed all across Mars at lower mid-latitudes.

However, it was the absence of a general atmospheric circulation, which describes the direction of the winds, and scientists have been unable to explain how these features were formed.

Therefore, the study is said to have been designed in a way which would integrate rover-scale data of dune formations and weather conditions, which would confirm the change in the prevailing wind direction with the close of the last ice age as well as improve general circulation models.

Li’s team used high-resolution orbital cameras as well as Zhurong rover’s terrain and multispectral cameras, surface composition analysers and meteorological measuring instruments which helped them obtain ‘in situ data’ (data collected adjacent to the measuring instrument) directly from the Martian surface.

What did the scientists find?

The researchers used the orbital data from Tianwen-1 and observed 2,262 bright dunes across Mars and based on the number of craters which might have struck the top of dunes, estimated that they were formed sometime between 2.1 million and 400,000 years ago.

These dates coincide with the start and end of Mars’ last major ice age. The research team has attributed the change in the angle of the rotational axis of Mars to the planet’s exit from the most recent ice age.

The current geological era on Mars is known as the Amazonian epoch, which began 3.55 and 1.8 billion years ago and continues to this day; it is also said to be marked by a number of impacts over that time.

“Understanding the Amazonian climate is essential to explain the current Martian landscape, volatile matter reservoirs and atmospheric state, and to relate these current observations and active processes to models of the ancient climate of Mars,” said Li, in a statement.

He added, “Observations of the current climate of Mars can help refine physical models of Martian climate and landscape evolution, and even form new paradigms.”

Li also said that they will continue to study both Amazonian and present-day climate in a bid “to promote the knowledge regarding the last two billion years of Martian climate history, including its environment and processes.”
Greta Thunberg faces charges for defying police orders during climate protest

Human-driven climate change is increasing average global temperature and record heatwaves have become a recurring global pattern. The united kingdom is the latest country to bear the brunt. Last month was the hottest June on record in the united kingdom's history.
