Climate Change is a word tossed around too lightly compared to magnitude of effect it is going to have on us. Climate Change doesn't just refer to few degrees of change in global temperature, or melting glaciers. The effects of climate change are manifold.

Researchers have now said that melting of ice in the northern hemisphere has a potential to release thousands of tonnes of unknown bacteria as glaciers and ice cover melt.

"We think of glaciers as a huge store of frozen water but the key lesson from this research is that they are also ecosystems in their own right," microbiologist and study author Arwyn Edwards of Aberystwyth University in the UK told the BBC.

As ice sheets melt with temperature increasing, the bacteria frozen in the ice can potentially reach warmer waters where they can possibly multiply. Many of these bacterias can be previously unknown and may severely impact us.

The study was led by glacial hydrologist Ian Stevens of Aarhus University in Denmark. The research team collected and studied surface meltwater from ten glaciers across the Northern Hemisphere. These glaciers were located in Canadian Arctic, European Alps, Greenland and Svalbard.

The researchers found an average of tens of thousands of microbes in each milliliter of water. The researchers claim that more than hundred thousand tonnes of bacteria could be released in next 80 years.

A severe decline in the population of Adélie penguins off the east Antarctic coast has sent alarm bells ringing among scientists worldwide. The monitoring by the Australian Antarctic Division revealed a 43 per cent drop over a decade in the number of birds that breed across 52 islands near the Mawson research station.

This is reportedly in contrast to other Adélie penguin populations in east Antarctica where numbers have been stable or increasing.

It is also contrary to models that had anticipated a continued rise in the Adélie populations.

There is a battle for space in India's megacity Mumbai. It is India's most populous city. Now, climate change threatens to make the matter worst.

Battle for space in India's megacity: Climate change threatens to make the matter worse

The desperate battle against climate change has claimed a civilisational casualty in the form of a ski lift in France. In the small French Alpine village of Saint-Firmin, the ski lift has been dismantled because there is no snow left. The ski lift, originally built in 1964, has not been in use for years in the absence of natural snow. The last time it ran, the year was 2008.

In its heyday, the ski lift saw winter-time activities such as intra-village ski competitions for kids. The nostalgic villagers told the media that such events used to be an every weekend-occurrence, followed by prize ceremonies in the village's centre square.

The prizes were usually modest, such as a pair of socks, a chocolate bar, a villager said. At the end of each skiing season, trophies would be awarded to the village's strongest skiers.

The winter tradition, however, melted away along with the snow. The ski-lift, too, rusted away.

A record-breaking heatwave sweeps through France and most of western Europe, pushing temperatures close to or above 40° C (104° F) for a sustained period during summer. Wildfires burned through the southern and western parts of the country.

Currently 62 per cent of France's population is exposed to either "significant" or "very significant" climate risks, according to data from the French Environment Ministry.

France could also be facing a much more challenging future as temperatures are expected to rise by 3.8 C by 2100, and even 6.7 in the worst-case scenario, according to a study published by researchers from the French national meteorological service Météo France in October.

"Comparing our results with those based on previous generations of climate model ensembles reveals that our assessed ranges are substantially higher than previously reported," the study said in its conclusion.

A National Geographic report states that if the estimates of 2 degrees Celsius warmer temperatures translate into reality, about a third of the Eastern Alps' resorts won't be able to open ski lifts by the Christmas holidays, the highest-earning time of the season.

Ski-lift demolished in French Alps because there is no snow left

It seems that the world has to wait a little while longer for getting on the path towards catastrophe. To highlight the climate issues, the COP27 summit is extended for a day as negotiators seek to break a deadlock over creating a loss and damage fund.

WION Climate Tracker: Western nations take harsh stance at Summit

On Saturday, negotiators at the COP27 climate meeting in Egypt came close to reaching a breakthrough agreement for a fund to aid poor countries suffering from the effects of climate change, but they couldn't agree on how to cut the greenhouse gas emissions that were causing them.

Representatives from over 200 nations were eager for a deal they could bill as a step forward in the fight against climate change, with the final climate accord already more than a day delayed.

"We have to be fast here now, but not fast towards a bad result. Not fast in terms of accepting something that we then spend years regretting", said Ireland's environment minister, Eamon Ryan.

Ministers from the regional bloc are ready to "walk away," according to Frans Timmermans, the head of the European Union's climate policy if the agreement is not adequately ambitious.

The conclusion of the two-week summit in the tourist destination of Sharm el-Sheikh will test how serious the world is about combating global warming, despite the fact that a conflict in Europe and extreme consumer inflation are diverting attention.

A draft agreement from the COP27, which was released on Saturday, maintained prior commitments to keep global warming below 1.5 degrees Celsius in order to avert the worst effects of climate change, but it provided little evidence of new ambition to make the necessary emission reductions.

COP27 nears breakthrough on climate finance, GHGs remain sticking point

Egypt, the host country for COP27, desperately tried to save the UN climate talks on Saturday, as the European Union (EU) hinted at a resolution to the sensitive subject of "loss and damage" financing for countries that are susceptible to climate change. In order to further the battle against climate change as the world faces an increasing number of weather extremes, over 200 nations' delegates assembled in Egypt in the last two weeks at COP27. In a reversal, the US also said it wouldn’t block the creation of a climate damages fund for developing countries. Yet, no funding deal has been formalised.

However, disagreements emerged about raising the bar for fighting global warming as well as the conditions under which affluent polluters must pay "loss and damage" compensation to nations devastated by climate catastrophes.

After a paper presented by Egypt was squarely rejected by the EU, a source within the organisation said that at least the loss and damage problem had been "accepted" as far as the EU was concerned.

The Egyptian president on Saturday issued a draft paper on the establishment of a dedicated loss and damage fund. It borrows its terminology from three prior suggestions made by the EU, Britain, the G77, and the bloc of 134 developing countries led by China. However, it also seems to push some of the trickier issues, notably those pertaining to finance sources, until the next year.

The EU wants COP27 to adopt robust wording on reducing emissions and to reiterate the lofty objective of keeping global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius over pre-industrial levels.

The world is presently off track and is projected to warm by about 2.5C under existing promises and plans, according to scientists, making this a significantly safer safeguard against catastrophic climate consequences.

In addition, the Egyptian COP27 chair unveiled a fresh version of the final declaration, which calls for stepping up "efforts towards the phasedown of unabated coal power and phase-out of wasteful fossil fuel subsidies."

COP27 Summit: Developing nations call to establish 'loss and damage fund'; no formal deal yet

India has expressed reservations during the discussions on the draft text that seeks to expand the scope of emissions mitigation target to agriculture at the ongoing COP 27 UN climate summit in Egypt. The discussions were part of a special UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) effort known as the Koronivia Joint Work on Agriculture.

During the discussions, India blamed the rich nations for blocking pro-poor and pro-farmer decisions, saying that the text compromises the very foundation of food security, a source in the Indian delegation attending the summit told PTI news agency.

New Delhi has blamed the developed nations for shifting the focus of the international climate regime by “searching for cheaper solutions abroad”, claiming that they do not want to sacrifice their lavish lifestyles.

“At every climate summit, the developed countries wish to change the goalposts of the international climate regime using diversionary means to dilute their responsibilities arising from their historical emissions.”

“Annex-I countries, it may be recalled, owe the world a carbon debt of 790 gigatonnes of carbon dioxide (GtCO2), which is worth USD 79 trillion, even at the modest price of USD 100 per tonnes,” India reportedly said during the discussions.

“This year too, the developed countries are distracting attention from their excessive GHG emissions by emphasising reduction in agriculture emissions which are ‘survival emissions’ and not ‘luxury emissions,” it said.

The officials said that at the summit discussions, India asserted that the current climate crisis is not because of agricultural emissions, rather the developed nations are historically responsible.

“Nations are unable to reduce their emissions domestically by any worthwhile change in their lifestyles. Rather, they are searching for cheaper solutions abroad,” they said.
