WION Climate Tracker: Climate Change will fuel Humanitarian Crisis in 2023

Amid the United Nations biodiversity summit, COP 15, negotiators said they have reached a historic deal, on Monday. The draft calls for raising billions of dollars by 2030 to protect land and marine areas as well as save biodiversity in the developing world. The conference that took place in Montreal, Canada was seen as the “last chance” to address the issue.

In line with this deal, at least 190 countries have committed to placing 30 per cent of land and water under protection by 2030, which is significant for biodiversity. Additionally, the draft also calls for raising $200 billion by the end of the decade for a range of sources and work on phasing out or reforming subsidies which could provide another $500 billion for nature.

Notably, as of now, 17 per cent of land and 10 per cent of oceans are protected. “There has never been a conservation goal globally at this scale…This puts us within a chance of safeguarding biodiversity from collapse,” said the director, Brian O’Donnell, of a conservation group called Campaign for Nature, to the press.

The draft of the agreement was released, on Sunday, by China which holds the presidency at this conference but the venue had to be moved to Canada due to Beijing’s Covid-related restrictions. It was approved on early Monday, by ministers and government officials representing about 190 countries who agreed that saving biodiversity is a priority.

Furthermore, the framework also calls for increasing the amount of money sent to poor countries to at least $20 billion every year by 2025 which could be increased by $10 billion each year by the end of the decade. However, the document only calls for identifying subsidies by 2025 which can be reformed or phased out and work on reducing them by 2030.

The draft comprised four broad goals and 22 targets addressing the protection of nature and sharing its benefits which included, the management of wildlife, working on the restoration of habitats and using less plastic.

The deal also accounts for the rights of Indigenous peoples and reaffirmed that they will have a voice in decision-making, a move which has been praised by many. This comes after nearly two weeks of negotiating with finance reportedly being one of the most contentious issues. As at least 70 delegates from African, South American and Asian countries, last week staged a walkout and did not return for hours.

Countries sign historic deal at COP 15, commit billions by 2030 to save biodiversity

The European Union on Sunday announced an agreement for a major reform to overhaul the bloc's carbon market. The historic deal which aims to lower emissions and invest in climate-friendly technologies was unveiled by member states and MPs on Sunday.

As per an EU statement, the agreement aims to speed up emission cuts, phase out free allowances to industries, and target fuel emissions from building and road transportation sectors.

The deal means that emissions in the Emissions Trading System (ETS) sector will be cut by 62 per cent by 2030.

AFP reports that the accord also aims to speed up the process of eliminating free allowances, with a 48.5 per cent reduction by 2030 and a complete elimination by 2034.

European Union agrees upon a major reform to overhaul its carbon market

Various parts of the world witnessed the wrath for mother nature. From the drought in the Horn of Africa to one third of Pakistan been inundated by floods, and now the North Atlantic Treaty Organization or NATO is putting its heads together to address the problem of climate change.

More than a tenth of plant and animal species on Earth could go extinct by the end of the century if the current trends on emissions continue, according to a recently published paper that seeks to raise awareness even as the world governments are on their final leg of negotiations for COP15 in Montreal.

The paper published on Friday in Science Advances journal paints an alarming picture of what could unfold if the current climate crisis continues to trend, arguing that a rise in temperature could fracture Earth’s web of life.

It claims that more than 42,000 plants and animal species out of the 150,388 species monitored by the IUCN could go extinct, pinning the blame squarely on human behaviour.

It came up with its assessment after using a supercomputer to model a synthetic Earth to understand the effect global heating and land use change could have on living beings.

According to researchers, 6 per cent of plants and animals will disappear by 2050 if there is no change in emission norms and eventually, the figure would rise to 13 per cent by the end of the century.

It noted that in the worst-case scenario, an estimated 27 per cent of plants and animals could disappear by 2100.

“We have populated a virtual world from the ground up and mapped the resulting fate of thousands of species across the globe to determine the likelihood of real-world tipping points,” said Dr Giovanni Strona, a co-author and a scientist at the University of Helsinki, reports the Guardian.

“This study is unique because it accounts also for the secondary effect on biodiversity, estimating the effect of species going extinct in local food webs beyond direct effects. The results demonstrate that interlinkages within food webs worsen biodiversity loss,” said the study’s co-author, Prof Corey Bradshaw of Flinders University in Australia.

Canada increases biodiversity funding

Meanwhile, Canada on Friday said that it was ramping up its international biodiversity funding to developing countries. It made the announcement during tense COP15 talks aimed at sealing a "peace pact with nature".

Canada's environment minister Steven Guilbeault said the government has pledged to increase the fund by 255 million Canadian dollars (US$186 million) in aid for lower-income countries to help them protect their ecosystems, bringing the total figure to 1.5 billion Canadian dollars annually.

A report by the International Energy Agency (IEA) said on Friday (December 16) that the world is consuming more coal than ever before. In 2022, global consumption is set to rise to an all-time high.

The report also stated that consumption will remain at similar levels in the next few years, and efforts from world economies are needed to mitigate the problem.

In the annual coal report, the IEA said that the demand for coal is set to grow 1.2 per cent and top eight billion metric tons for the first time ever this year.

The alarming report comes just a year after countries promised to move to a low-carbon level and also agreed to phase down their use of coal at the United Nations climate conference in Glasgow.

Some countries have started using coal, which was a cheaper alternative this year as gas and fuel prices after the Russia-Ukraine war. The war also caused disruptions to supply.

As per the report, the largest increase in coal demand is expected to be in India at 7%, followed by the European Union at 6% and China at 0.4%.

Keisuke Sadamori, the IEA’s director of energy markets and security, said: "The world is close to a peak in fossil fuel use, with coal set to be the first to decline, but we are not there yet."

In 2022, world leaders gathered at the 2022 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP27) in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt to talk about proposals by business leaders, and negotiations by nearly 200 nations about the future of global action on climate change.

Although, the final COP27 deal drew criticism from some quarters for not doing more to rein in climate-damaging emissions, both by setting more ambitious national targets and by scaling back the use of fossil fuels such as coal, oil and natural gas.

Global coal consumption to rise to an all-time high in this year

The world is warming and the effects are damning and it is an established fact that the so-called developed nations of the West have emitted The Lion's Share of greenhouse gases.

Climate Tracker: Climate change is an increasing threat to Africa

The silent cry for Earth's stewardship echoed throughout 2022 during a number of international summits that had Climate Change as their central theme. That the Earth is heating, up to the point of becoming inhabitable is a geopolitical theme that the world has addressed over the years by throwing enough spotlight for urgent attention on the questions of climate change. The 22nd year of the 21st century continued the trend of addressing climate change as a geo-economic determinant of global existence. Yet the debate continues if addressing climate change also translated into redressing its underlying causes this year.

Unlike Alok Sharma, president of the 26th UN Climate Change Conference last year, nobody held back their tears during showcase climate change summits this year. There were passionate speeches from the likes of Barbados Prime Minister Mia Mottley and there was ample space for the visibility of global north-global south divide on the issue of climate change funding. The year had its share of climate change summits of significance, consisting of a few with more than a few 'breakthroughs'. But in the series of climate change summits all through 2022, there was no episode of any conference whose parts and parcels were regarded with 'landmark' or 'historic' prefixes.

COP27 Sharm El-Sheikh: Breakthrough on new 'Loss and Damage' fund

The UN Climate Change Conference (COP27) was hosted in Egypt's Sharm El-Sheikh in November 2022. Widely held as the most significant Climate Change summit of the year, COP27 joint-statement agreed to provide "loss and damage" funding for vulnerable countries hit hard by climate disasters. Countries reaffirmed their commitment to limit global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels along with steps to promote climate technology solutions in developing countries.

A total of 54 species of requiem sharks, 37 additional species of guitarfishes, six species of sea cucumber, and South American freshwater stingrays had their conservation status upgraded.

CITES parties agreed to continue and expand efforts to reduce the persistent market demand that drives illegal trade, sharing responsibility for solving these challenges between both source and destination (market) countries.

Negotiators from EU nations and the European Parliament reached an agreement on the bill imposing CO2 emissions penalties on imports of iron and steel, cement, fertilisers, aluminium, and energy.

Firms bringing in those products to the EU will need to purchase certifications to cover their embedded CO2 emissions. The plan aims to apply the same CO2 price to local EU industry and foreign businesses, the latter of which are currently required to purchase permits from the EU carbon market.

Mohammed Chahim, European Parliament's lead negotiator on the law, said the border tariff would be crucial to EU efforts to fight climate change.

"It is one of the only mechanisms we have to incentivise our trading partners to decarbonise their manufacturing industry," Chahim said.

The tax's purpose is to shield European businesses from being outbid by less expensive products coming from nations with laxer environmental regulations.

It will also apply to imported hydrogen, which was a demand made during the discussions but was not included in the initial EU plan.

This week's discussions on a reform of the EU carbon market will define some of the law's specifics, including when it will go into effect.

In order to protect local industry from foreign competition, the EU now provides free CO2 licences. However, to comply with WTO regulations, the EU aims to phase out these free permits once the carbon border tax is implemented. The discussions around the carbon market will determine how swiftly that phase-in occurs.

Plans put out by the Albanese administration in Australia would require banks and other large corporations to tell the public what they are doing to reduce emissions.

The government is also searching for measures to combat "greenwashing," which occurs when companies exaggerate their environmental policies in an effort to win over customers.

In a speech Monday in Sydney, the treasurer, Jim Chalmers, will state that Australian businesses "need to make credible disclosures to stay competitive in global capital markets."

“There’s now broad acceptance that proper disclosure of these financial risks and impacts isn’t a nice-to-have extra,” he will say, according to speech notes distributed by his office in advance.

“This information is need-to-know – essential to mobilising the weight of our financial system behind the net zero transition.”

On Monday, Treasury will publish a consultation document on the creation of an Australian mechanism for disclosing climate risk, as reported by the Guardian.

The government contends that in order for businesses and investors to manage climate risks and invest in new possibilities, they need clarity and confidence. It requests "more information and more openness on how they are reacting to climate change and assisting the transition to net zero" from big business and financial institutions.

The government says the reporting requirements are expected to be mandatory for large entities and phased in over time. It also plans to apply “appropriately tailored requirements to comparable commonwealth public sector corporate entities and investment funds”.

The government has also urged that Treasury create a thorough plan to expand Australia's green finance markets and take advantage of emerging global possibilities in sustainable finance.

Renewable sources of energy are forecasted to overtake coal as the largest source of electricity generation worldwide by early 2025, Paris-headquartered International Energy Agency said. The forecast holds remarkable significance to keep alive the global goal of limiting Earth's warming temperatures to 1.5 degrees Celsius.

The agency also said that the world is set to add as much renewable energy in the next five years as it did in the last twenty years. It added that the war in Ukraine has pushed forward the growth in renewables such as solar and wind.

“Energy security concerns caused by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine have motivated countries to increasingly turn to renewables such as solar and wind to reduce reliance on imported fossil fuels,” the IEA said.

Humanity has just eight days left to seal a deal to save nature from destruction at our species' hands. But, halfway into the historic COP15 biodiversity talks, there's no major progress.

The UN talks were touted as the "last best chance" to save Earth's species and ecosystems from humanity and the irreversible destruction it's causing. However, as per AFP, there has been no major progress on increased funding for conservation in developing nations or the "30 by 30" pledge to safeguard 30 per cent of land mass, and seas by 2030.

On Thursday, environment ministers of the 196 members of the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) take over from their delegates in Montreal, and it is hoped that negotiations will get serious.

But the chances that the talks that end on December 19 will close with an agreement for an ambitious "peace pact with nature" seems far-fetched given the state the draft is currently in.

Three children lost their lives on Monday, after being pulled from an icy lake as an Arctic blast sent temperatures tumbling across the UK.

The youngsters were reported to have been playing on frozen ice near Birmingham, central England, on Sunday afternoon, when it gave way and they fell in.

Emergency services said the children went into cardiac arrest when they were rescued and were taken to the hospital in critical condition.

The incident came as the UK was hit by heavy snow and freezing conditions, causing major travel disruption, on the eve of a national rail strike Tuesday that was already expected to bring the country to a grinding halt.

Some of their increasingly eye-catching stunts drew criticism from politicians. (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. High-stakes biodiversity negotiations are starting on Wednesday (Dec 7) in Canada, touted as the "last best chance" to save Earth's species and ecosystems from humanity and the irreversible destruction it's causing.

At the beginning of the talks that will hammer out a 10-year framework to save the planet's forests, oceans, and species, UN chief Antonio Guterres warned that "with our bottomless appetite for unchecked and unequal economic growth, humanity has become a weapon of mass extinction."

"This conference is our chance to stop this orgy of destruction," he added.

The meeting, officially known as COP15 will last from December 7-19 and comes after two years of Covid-related delay and recent several days long pre-negotiations that saw very little progress on key issues.

Hopes from the two-week UN summit includes a deal that ensures that future generation has more "nature" by the end of this decade than Earth has now.

Vanishing at a rate not seen in 10 million years, currently, more than one billion species, especially insects are facing the threat of extinction. Additionally, as per the 2022 UN Global Land Outlook assessment, around 40 per cent of the planet's land is considered degraded.

As critical nature talks open, UN chief says 'humanity has become a weapon of mass destruction'

For climate scientists around the world, Twitter was once a platform where they loved to share their research as well as rally support to stop oil pipelines or call out politicians and leaders on their failures to curb pollution. But the scenario seems to have altered as many scientists are now seen leaving Twitter in the wake of the recent increase in climate misinformation posts, threats, and spam.

There has been a recent reappearance of debunked climate change denialists who have been now regularly using Twitter to post memes and talk their points with the hashtag #ClimateScam so much so that the hashtag has become the first result to appear on searching the term "climate" on the site. This sudden surge of anti-climate tweets has left many scientists and activists unnerved.

After Elon Musk's recent leadership takeover, Twitter's content management teams were fired, the sustainability arm of the platform was dismantled and bans were lifted on various prominent celebrities with millions following them, like Donald Trump. For some climate experts, the drastic changes the platform has been subjected to have become too much to bear.

National Snow and Ice Data Centre's scientist Twila Moon had expressed her concerns that if scientists lose their trust in Twitter, the connections established between them could "crumble". “Since Musk’s takeover, I have ramped down my own use of Twitter, using it less both to look for news and to share science. Folks noticing a rise in climate denialism and disinformation is particularly worrying and I am concerned that it could slow climate action in ways that are devastating to economies, communities, and health,” Moon further said.

One of Penn State's prominent climate scientists Michael Mann said that he doesn't plan to leave Twitter immediately, however, he emphasised how climate disinformation has “become a bit more on the nose, with climate deniers who had been deactivated making a reappearance, and climate denial getting somewhat more traction”.

Mann has recently joined Mastodon, which is a new social media site and is seen as Twitter's alternative, and other climate scientists, who have been disappointed by Musk's way of running Twitter, have joined Mann on the alternative platform.

Rutgers University climate scientist Bob Kopp, who had earlier stated that COVID-19 misinformation "tends to go hand in hand" with tweets of climate denialism, said, “I don’t think I’m getting much value from being on Twitter now, there are more interesting conversations happening at Mastodon."

Musk, who was earlier appreciated by environmentalists for leading the electric car firm Tesla, recently stated that Twitter “obviously cannot become a free-for-all hellscape”.

However, climate communications expert at George Mason University Ed Maibach believes that Musk's recent actions reflect “that he is interested in creating a massive, worldwide cage fight. If it comes to that, we’ll take a pass."

Since July, Twitter has seen a tremendous rise in tweets and posts which are talking about the "climate scam", which is three months before Musk's massive USD44 billion takeover, as per Climate Action Against Disinformation coalition's analysis. The coalition explains how the opaque algorithm of Twitter makes it difficult to understand how this happened.

Institute for Strategic Dialogue's head of civic action Jennie King explains, "There’s no evidence there are more posts with ‘climate scam’ than ‘climate emergency’ or other terms, or that they are getting more engagement, so it’s a bit perplexing why it’s the top search term, we are scratching our heads at it."

“I can understand climate scientists saying this is not a productive place for conversations with each other anymore. They’ve become lightening rods for hate speech and death threats, we are seeing a real escalation of threats against them, intended to drive them off the platform," he adds.

King further emphasised on the "renewed energy" seen on Twitter to spread debunked theories of the climate crisis, especially by accounts with a huge number of followers. One of those accounts is of Canadian psychologist and media personality Peterson, whose account is among those which have been reinstated by Musk after it was banned. After being reinstated, Peterson has been regularly tweeting a dozen tweets related to climate change every single day to his 3.5 million followers.

He has continued to share false narratives on how carbon dioxide in excess will benefit the world, how efforts being made to curb pollution being caused by cars are threatening the "automotive freedom" and has alleged that climate campaigners intend to “wreak envious and narcissistic havoc”.

“Peterson is a big one because his brand extends beyond the environment but now he’s doubling down on climate. We’ve seen time and again these accounts that espouse climate denial and delay also spread misinformation on other topics, such as electoral fraud, racial politics or reproductive rights," King said.

Climate scientists now fear that with trends like #ClimateScam, the mainstream social media platforms will now be reigned by conspiracy theorists and others who don't hold expertise on issues of climate change.

India’s Greenhouse-in-a-box was among the five winners announced by the Prince of Wales, Prince William, in Boston, United States, on Friday. It is a sustainable solution for small-scale farmers developed by an Indian startup, Kheyti, in Telangana which has won one million pounds ($1.2 million).

Founded by Prince William this was the second edition of the Earthshot prize which has also been dubbed the ‘Eco Oscars’ and witnessed the presence of several celebrities who walked the green carpet. Kheyti won the prize in the Protect and Restore Nature category which saw hundreds of entries from across the world.

Co-founder and CEO of Kheyti, Kaushik Kappagantulu, said that he had launched the solution for at least 100 million local smallholder farmers who are most impacted by climate change. The aim of greenhouse-in-a-box is to reduce costs and increase yields which in turn would help protect the livelihoods of these farmers.

This simple solution has bigger implications than the Greenhouse-in-a-box, which can grow crops while offering them shelter from unpredictable elements including destructive pests. Notably, the plants in this greenhouse require 98 per cent less water while the yield is seven times higher than those grown outside. Furthermore, it also costs 90 per cent less than an average greenhouse.

The start-up also offers training and support to the farmers in making sure the greenhouse is as effective as possible. Therefore, with less water and the use of pesticides, it also protects the environment while also helping small-holder farmers save money and resources.

“We are honoured to be recognised by The Earthshot Prize this year. The world depends on its small-hold farmers and yet their lives are amongst the hardest on earth,” said Kappagantulu. He added, “Our Greenhouse-in-a-Box is empowering farmers in India today. The steps we have already taken at Kheyti are now building to change farmers’ lives at scale.”

The project began with the aim to clean up India’s holiest river Ganges and eventually they were able to collect flowers dispensed into the river and turn them into sustainable leather called Fleather.

All 15 finalists will receive support from the Earthshot Prize Global Alliance which is a network of NGOs and private sector businesses around the world which will assist in scaling these solutions. The other five winners are from Kenya, the United Kingdom, Australia and Oman.

To guard Earth's ecosystems against the rising threat of climate change and a loss of natural resources, funds towards its protection need to double from current levels and reach $384 billion a year by 2025, said the UN's environment watchdog.

As per the UN Environment Programme's (UNEP) second "State of Finance for Nature" report, currently, $154 billion yearly is spent, primarily by governments, towards "nature-based solutions" or the protection and management of water, land, air and wildlife.

Ivo Mulder, head of UNEP's climate finance unit, said that this amount "will have to increase by several orders of magnitude if we are to tackle the triple crisis of land degradation, climate and nature."

Even if we are going through many crises, like the war in Ukraine and skyrocketing prices, he said, "It shouldn't be too hard a stretch given that almost 50 per cent of global GDP is dependent on healthy and well-functioning ecosystems."

Meanwhile, according to the agency's assessment, governments spend $500 billion to $1 trillion per year on subsidies for fisheries, agriculture, and fossil fuels, which could have negative environmental effects.

Despite their pledges to reduce carbon emissions and deforestation, private sector actors only account for 17 per cent of investment in nature-based solutions, said UNEP adding that this means that they "will have to combine net zero with nature positive."

The health of Australia's Great Barrier Reef is in a critical state and deteriorating as climate change warms up the waters in which it lies.

The World Heritage-listed site off Australia's northeastern coast is all but doomed, with between 70 and 99 per cent of corals set for destruction unless immediate “transformative action” is taken to reverse global warming, according to a new report.

The Australian Academy of Science says the more ambitious target of the Paris Climate Agreement of keeping global warming to 1.5 degrees has now slipped out of reach and is “virtually impossible”.

If 1.5 degrees of warming was sustained, the Great Barrier Reef would cease to exist as we know it, says one of the authors, Ove Hoegh-Guldberg, a biologist and climate scientist specialising in coral reefs.

Great Barrier Reef is made up of corals that support rich and bio-diverse marine life. The reef is 2300 km long.

Great Barrier Reef was an estimated USD 4 billion in revenue from tourism before the coronavirus pandemic.

The reef is at risk of losing its coveted world heritage status because of ocean warming -- fuelled by climate change -- damaging its health.

Changes in ocean temperatures stress healthy corals, causing them to expel algae living in their tissues -- draining them of their vibrant colours in a process known as bleaching.

The Great Barrier Reef doomed as up to 99% of coral at risk, report finds

In the temperate shallows of the Mediterranean, once-vibrant red and purple coral forests that provide a crucial haven for biodiversity now stand bleached and brittle, transformed into skeletons by record summer temperatures, scientists say.

Holding naked branches of gorgonian coral, Tristan Estaque of marine conservation group Septentrion Environnement is returning despondent from an exploratory dive off the coast of Marseille in southern France.

"It is heartbreaking, the deterioration is so fast," he tells AFP.

Dive surveys just two months earlier found an intact landscape, lush with violet-fringed fans of gorgonian coral.

Now it is a "ghost forest", says Estaque, with the majestic fans largely bare of living tissue.

"You have to imagine a tree where there are no more leaves, no more bark."

Fragile forests

Gorgonian corals, which have flexible skeletons encrusted with polyps, are found across the planet.

Those found in the Mediterranean are said to create "forests", sheltering a huge array of species. But they are acutely vulnerable to human activities.

Fishing nets, anchors and careless divers can rip their delicate structures, while exposure to continuous and intense heat can be lethal.

Marine heatwaves are becoming more common, according to a report this year by UN climate experts.

This summer a major marine heatwave hit the western Mediterranean, with water up to five degrees Celsius (41 degrees Fahrenheit) hotter than normal, according to Mercator Ocean International, the organisation that runs the European ocean monitoring service.

In some places water reached 30ºC.

Recent Septentrion Environment surveys have shown that between 70 and 90 per cent of the red gorgonian population in the 10 to 20-metre zone off Marseille have since died.

The effect was like "an underwater inferno", according to Solene Basthard-Bogain, another of the group's specialists.

And it is not just near the southern French coast.

Gorgonian mortality has also been observed on the Spanish coasts and around the Italian island of Sardinia, according to Stephane Sartoretto of the French research agency Ifremer.

The severity of the impact appears to vary depending on the depth of the corals.

Along the sawtooth coastline of France's Calanques National Park, notched with craggy coves and shallow habitats where the gorgonians are found in waters of just six metres (20 feet) in places, the die-offs have been particularly intense.

In the Balearic Islands, they live deeper, at 40 metres, and were therefore less impacted, Sartoretto says.

'Forest fire'

In addition to the gorgonians, sponges and bivalves have also been affected.

The marine heatwave likewise battered mussel farming, with 150 tonnes of commercial mussels and 1,000 tonnes of young stock -- for next year's crop -- lost in Spain over the summer.

A drop in temperatures in the Mediterranean could help to save those corals that were spared in the summer die-off, says Basthard-Bogain, although she worries that any pathogens that may have spread because of the heat would still be present in the waters.

There are fears, too, that another hot spell cannot be ruled out before the end of the autumn.

Sartoretto says he worries that repeated periods of heat stress could be devastating for the corals.

"We can ask ourselves about the possibility of their disappearance," he says, adding that their reproduction rate is very slow.

"Like after a forest fire on land," he says, "they will take decades to regenerate."

"Last night (the evening of Monday 28th November and early morning of Tuesday 29th November), citizens in eight countries deflated tyres of nearly 900 polluting SUVs. This is the biggest coordinated global action against high-carbon vehicles in history, with many more to come," the group said in a statement.

The movement has now deflated tyres on well over 10,000 SUVs in cities across the world since March. "This is the largest night of action yet," the statement added.

"We want to show that anyone, everywhere, can take climate action to end the dominance of massive cars in the world’s cities. All they need is a leaflet and a lentil! Our movement will continue to grow – once the idea is out there, it can’t be stopped,” Marion Walker, Tyre Extinguishers spokesperson said in an official statement.

Reported to have been set up in March, the Tyre Extinguishers have criticised SUVs as unnecessary ‘luxury emissions’, by the wealthy and conventionally privileged individuals. They say that SUVs are a climate disaster, cause air pollution and "make our roads more dangerous.

Climate activists deflate tyres of over 900 SUVs worldwide overnight to protest ‘luxury emissions’

A United Nations-backed mission is recommending that the Great Barrier Reef be added to the list of endangered World Heritage sites. They also said that the world's biggest coral reef ecosystem was significantly impacted by climate change and warming of oceans.
