They managed to glue themselves to the asphalt and stop operations at two of them: Nuremberg and Cologne-Bonn.</p>

<p>They also waved banners reading: “Oil kills” and “Sign the treaty”, in order to call on the German government to sign an international treaty to ban the use of fossil fuels by 2030. The airport operations resumed after all the protestors were detained and removed by police.</p>

<h2><strong>Interior minister condemns protest</strong></h2>

<p>The protest was vehemently condemned by Germany’s Interior Minister, Nancy Faeser, who dubbed the activists as “dangerous and stupid.”</p>

<p>“These anarchists are risking not only their own lives,&nbsp;Letzte Generation’s argument but are also endangering others. We have recommended tough prison sentences. And we obligate airports to secure their facilities significantly better,” she wrote on X.</p>

<p>The climate group defended its actions, saying the government’s inaction was putting people’s lives in danger.</p>

<p>“What’s dangerous is your political failure which is dragging us ever deeper into a catastrophe … we’re talking about our existence. About the lives of billions of people,” the group wrote on X.</p>

<p>The group later said eight people were released by the police.</p>

<p>The disruption also attracted condemnation from airport association ADV, which said: “Today’s disruptions at several airports are a concerted act of criminal extortion. This is not a peaceful protest and it is not about supposedly higher goals.”</p>

<p>“These are malicious interventions in air traffic and in the personal rights of every traveller who is unable to take their flight as planned,” said DV’s managing director, Ralph Beisel.</p>

<p>Over the last few years, the German government has tightened the noose around climate protesters. During summers, German authorities raided homes of climate protesters in five cities and collected DNA samples, which Letzte Generation termed as “an attempt at intimidation”.</p>

‘Stupid’ climate activists halt operations at German airports after breaking in

<p>The Italian activists, protesting against climate change, targeted Botticelli's famous Birth of Venus painting which has been exhibited at the Uffizi museum in Florence.</p>

<p>In a statement, the campaign group Last Generation said that their two activists posted images of a flooded Tuscan town over the giant shell of the goddess on the 15th-century work before they were escorted to a police station.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"The government continues to pretend that fields did not burn in January, that water will not be a problem this summer, that houses destroyed by floods are accidental events and not caused by human choices," said one of the protesters, Giordano.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In November, a judge in Florence had given a ruling that the two activists, who in 2022 had glued their hands to the glass which was around another Botticelli painting in the Uffizi, did not commit any crime.</p>

<p>In 2022, the Last Generation organisation started carrying out peaceful protests in Italy before the general election and appealed to politicians from all parties to place the issue of climate change on their priority list.</p>

<p>More than 100 climate activists, including five children and a 97-year-old reverend, have been arrested, said the police, after a two-day blockade of one of the world’s largest coal ports in Australia, on Monday (Nov 27).&nbsp;</p>

<p>The protest group Rising Tide, which organised the blockade claims that the 30-hour blockade of the shipping lane in Port of Newcastle over the weekend prevented over half a million tonnes of coal from leaving the country.</p>

<h2><strong>What did the climate protesters do?</strong></h2>

<p>Hundreds of activists took to the Newcastle port’s shipping lane on Australia’s east coast swimming or using kayaks in protest of the government’s climate inaction and imploring them to end the country’s long reliance on fossil fuel exports.<br />

<p>Canberra is the world’s second-biggest coal exporter and heavily relies on fossil fuels for its own electricity needs. The government is also reportedly in the midst of planning a string of new coal mines, oil fields and gas projects.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The port in Australia’s east is around 170 kilometres away from Sydney and is said to be the country’s most important terminal for coal shipments.</p>

<p>Around 3,000 people from across the country took part in the 30-hour blockade, reported BBC, the permission for which was granted by the authorities. However, police boats reportedly started closing in after the deadline had crossed and the crowds of activists refused to leave the water.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The New South Wales Police said five juveniles had also been arrested but did not give their ages. As per BBC, the five children were subsequently released.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The NSW police, in a statement, said that they have charged 104 people, on Monday. Among those arrested and charged was 97-year-old Uniting Church reverend Alan Stuart who as per Rising Tide’s post on X, is the “OLDEST PERSON EVER ARRESTED AND CHARGED IN AUSTRALIA”.<br />

<p>“I’m doing this as a student because the decision makers in this country have consistently ignored young people’s voices,” said 17-year-old Anjali Beams who travelled from Adelaide and also remained past the 30-hour deadline.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“The Newcastle coal port is the largest coal port in the world, and I will not be complicit in letting my future get sold away by the fossil fuel industry for their profit,” she added.</p>

<h2><strong>The group had been warned</strong></h2>

<p>The latest stunt by the group comes after its members who said they would protest at the Berlin Marathon, were warned by organisers of the Berlin Marathon to not disrupt this weekend’s race.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“We hope nothing untoward happens in terms of a demonstration but we have plans for such eventualities,” Juergen Lock, managing director of SCC events which organised the marathon in the German capital, told reporters, on Friday (Sept 22).&nbsp;</p>

<p>This comes after the members of the Letzte Generation, whose tactics have divided public opinion, in a statement said, “Because there seems to be confusion: yes we will interrupt the Berlin marathon.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>It added, “We can't run away from the climate catastrophe.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>Climate activists from the Letzte Generation, on Sunday (September 17) morning, sprayed orange and yellow paint onto Berlin’s iconic Brandenburg Gate. Climate activists plug up holes in golf courses across Spain amid massive drought

<p>The French government said Tuesday that it would soon shut down an activist climate group over a series of recent demonstrations including one that led to fierce clashes with police over a controversial irrigation project.</p>

<p>Government spokesman Olivier Veran accused the Uprisings of the Earth (SLT) coalition of encouraging violence at protests in March near Sainte-Soline in western France over irrigation.</p>

<p>"You don't dissolve an association because of its ideas. You dissolve it because there is violence or a risk for public safety," Veran told CNews television.&nbsp;</p>

<p>SLT has vowed to fight the shutdown order, saying on its website: "You cannot dissolve a movement. You cannot dissolve a revolt."</p>

<p>Veran said SLT "whipped up violence at Sainte Soline by inviting rioters, who came from across Europe with metal bars and petanque balls to try and kill police officers".</p>

<p>"The climate question does not justify throwing rocks at police in a field," he said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>SLT is a coalition of several activist associations, which was also behind a recent protest against a sand quarry in western France where protesters tore up fields and equipment at a farm.</p>

<p>The group was also one of several organisers of a banned demonstration at the weekend against a new rail link between the eastern city of Lyon and Turin in Italy.</p>

<p>It is part of a new wave of more radical climate activist groups including Extinction Rebellion which use direct action to underline their warnings about the dangers to the planet.</p>

<p>On Tuesday, prosecutors also said they had detained 14 people for questioning over vandalism at a protest supported by SLT, against a Lafarge cement plant near the southern city of Marseille.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Protesters called the company "one of the most destructive in the world". &nbsp;</p>

<h2>Policing in spotlight</h2>

<p>The dissolution of SLT was officially launched by the interior ministry just after the Sainte-Soline clashes in March, using powers that have been previously used to outlaw far-right and Islamist groups.</p>

<p>The decree is likely to be discussed at the government's weekly cabinet meeting on Wednesday, a source close to the issue said.</p>

<p>France has faced a wave of protests in recent months, mainly over a hotly contested decision to push back the retirement age, which have at times turned violent.</p>

<p>Some of the demonstrators have vandalised buildings and street furniture or thrown rocks at riot police.</p>

<p>Critics accuse authorities of fomenting tensions with heavy-handed policing tactics and aggressive confrontations with demonstrators.</p>

<p>Many in France were shocked by the scenes at Sainte-Soline, where around 5,000 protesters battled with more than 3,000 police officers.</p>

<p>Two protesters were left in a coma afterwards, while around 30 officers were injured.</p>

<p>The demonstrators were protesting against a giant reservoir for storing water pumped up from the underground water table.</p>

<p>Critics say it will penalise smaller farmers and the ecosystem, while benefitting mainly industrial agriculture groups.</p>

<p>France's Human Rights League (FDH) said afterward that "as soon as the demonstrators arrived at the reservoir site, police fired at them with weapons of war: tear gas grenades, stun grenades, explosive sting-ball grenades and rubber bullets".</p>

<p>"The deployment put everyone present at risk of serious harm," it said.</p>

<p>Earlier this month, United Nations experts urged France to review its policing practices, expressing concern at the "reported excessive use of force" against protesters, in particular at Sainte-Soline.</p>

This comes as some 740 people have “come to the attention of the police,” Faeser told Bild.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The climate activist group has been using controversial methods of protest in Germany which have included glueing themselves on the road. Faeser also told Bild that most of the potential charges are “mainly about coercion and property damage”.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Interior minister criticises group’s methods of protest&nbsp;</strong></h2>

<p>During the interview with the German newspaper, the interior minister spoke about how it is unacceptable for the activists to “violate the rights of others”.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Speaking about their methods of protest, Fraser also said it is not helping climate protection and on the contrary activists are “massively damaging” their chances of being accepted or raising awareness.&nbsp;</p>

<p>However, the Last Generation activists have previously said that their rights are being violated by companies, lawmakers, and people who are not doing enough to protect the environment.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The group has been making headlines in different countries with protests like road blockades to throwing soup on famous artworks, steps which have garnered both support and criticism. Additionally, last week, a member of the climate advocacy group was charged a $430 fine for damage to property after a protest at the Audimax of Hamburg University.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Police crackdown last month</strong></h2>

<p>The police in Germany, in late May, conducted raids shortly after the group’s street blockades which aimed at investigating seven people aged between 22 to 38, for allegedly supporting or attempting to create a criminal organisation. In a statement, the police said that the suspects have been accused of “organising a fundraising campaign to finance the criminal acts committed” by Last Generation.&nbsp;</p>

<p>It added that they were “propagating these acts on their website and collecting a sum of at least 1.4 million euros ($1.5 million) in donations”. According to environmentalists in the country, the lawmakers in Germany have put their climate policies on the back burner as Europe was grappling with an energy crisis.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Speaking of their demands from the German government, Last Generation told WION, shortly after the raids, that there is a need for a “social council that leads us out of the climate crisis in a socially just way.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>US government has approved the $8 billion Willow oil drilling project in Alaska, media outlets reported on Monday saying that the move faces the wrath of climate activists and environmentalists.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>The US Interior Department has reduced the size of the project by denying two of the five drill sites and approving the rest three proposed by Alaska's largest crude oil producer and largest owner of exploration leases, ConocoPhillips.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Earlier, the Biden administration was mooting to reduce the size of the project to two sites. Had the sites were reduced to only two, it would have yielded the company only 70% of the oil they initially shown the interest to drill from the project.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The approval of this very contentious project is also a political advance for Alaska’s bipartisan congressional delegation which lent its backing to the White House.&nbsp;The final scope of the project will cover 68,000 fewer acres, CNN reported citing sources.&nbsp;</p>

<p>On environment conservation front, the protections were extended to the special areas which include Teshekpuk Lake, Utukok Uplands, Peard Bay Colville River, Kasegaluk Lagoon.&nbsp;These places are crucial habitat to grizzly bears, migratory birds polar bears and caribou.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Owned by the US federal government, the Willow Project is a decades-long oil drilling venture in the National Petroleum Reserve.&nbsp;Even as the climate activists are strongly protesting against the project, the oil project would still years to fully take off with oil making its way in the market.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The area where the project will be constructed reportedly carries 600 million barrels of oil. As per Biden administration’s estimates, the project would generate enough oil to release 9.2 million metric tons of carbon pollution a year. This equates to adding 2 million gas-powered cars.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Earthjustice President Abigail Dillen said that the approval will be a blow to the climate goals.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“We are too late in the climate crisis to approve massive oil and gas projects that directly undermine the new clean economy that the Biden Administration committed to advancing,” Dillen said adding, “We know President Biden understands the existential threat of climate, but he is approving a project that derails his own climate goals.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>Climate activists from the Just Stop Oil group went on trial on Wednesday for sitting on the track during the British Grand Prix last year.</p>

<p>Six activists are facing a jury trial on criminal charges of conspiring with others to cause a public nuisance and causing a public nuisance after they invaded the Silverstone circuit in July last year. All of the defendants have pleaded not guilty.&nbsp;</p>

<p>They held the protest on the track in Northamptonshire, central England when the race had been suspended because of a serious accident.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Most of the cars had already passed when they staged the sit-in but two vehicles with Japan's Yuki Tsunoda and France's Esteban Ocon at the wheel drove past during the protest, the prosecution told the court.</p>

<p>A luxury restaurant in London owned by the Turkish butcher Nusret Gokce, who is known as "Salt Bae", became the target of a group of eight climate activists protesting against meat-based foods.</p>

<p>A video that went viral on Twitter showed members of Animal Rebellion, an animal and climate justice movement, being thrown out of the Nusr-Et steakhouse by the staff. It was shared by the rights group.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to reports, the protesters occupied tables reserved for customers on Sunday at 6 pm, holding “mock menus” which had the group’s core demands categorised as a starter, main, and desert.</p>

<p>It comes weeks after a similar stunt at Gordon Ramsay's three-star Michelin restaurant in Chelsea.</p>

<p>In a statement, the group said that it is calling for "a plant-based food system and mass rewilding".</p>

<p>“Supporters of Animal Rebellion are getting dragged out by security at&nbsp;@nusr_et ‘s restaurant in London!” Animal Rebellion tweeted.</p>

<p>“The restaurant is famed for its steaks – products of environmental destruction and worker and animal exploitation. This is not a sustainable food system,” they posted with the hashtag #PlantBasedFuture.</p>

<p>One of the protesters, Ben Thomas, 20, a student, was quoted as saying, “Restaurants like these are symbolic of a broken system.”</p>

<p>“Whilst two million people are relying on food banks in the UK right now, influencer chefs are selling gold-plated steaks for more than £1,000. Steaks, and other red meats, that we know carry the highest environmental impacts.”</p>

<p>According to reports, Last Generation environmental group activists were also&nbsp;seen riding bicycles near the shunting area, stopping all aviation traffic.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The group tweeted pictures on Twitter. The tweet read, "Supporters of the last generation are currently blocking the runway of BER. Some are glued to the asphalt, and others ride their bikes across the shunting area, bringing air traffic to a standstill. Before entering BER, they informed the police."</p>
