It added that it showed leniency because Liu admitted to his guilt, showed repentance, and “actively returned the money taken”.According to Chinese law, if a convicted person sentenced to death does not commit a crime during their reprieve period, their sentence could be reduced to life imprisonment. The Patriotic Education Law was passed at a session of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, China's national legislature, Xinhua reported.&nbsp;

China's state news agency said that some people "are at a loss about what is patriotism", further adding that "historical nihilism" is a phrase used in China to describe public doubt and scepticism over the Chinese Communist Party's description of past events.&nbsp;

Xinhua said, "While it is enacted to promote patriotism, the law stresses the need to be rational, inclusive and open-minded, open the country wider to the world and embrace other civilisations."&nbsp;

As per the law, patriotic education respects the "history and cultural traditions of other countries and draws inspiration from all of human civilisation's outstanding achievements".&nbsp;

The case attracted interest online after the man, in his will, left a Mercedes-Benz car and $236,000 to his girlfriend and&nbsp;his&nbsp;parents challenged the decision in court.

The man&nbsp;had reportedly dated the woman for a year. The man’s girlfriend reportedly tried to transfer the property to her name following which his&nbsp;parents raised objections.

After several rounds of negotiations as both sides failed to reach an agreement, a court in Wuhan ruled that the parents should keep the property and the woman should receive the car and the man’s personal savings worth $148,000, including compensation payment from the parents for keeping the property.

The Chinese daily reported that parents can take help of "public systems" if they encounter difficulties in parenting with the government set to provide "support and assistance" to families.&nbsp;

According to the newspaper, netizens in China have expressed concern over the new law as it would place parents mainly responsible for children's performance than school teachers.

The new law is called Family Education Promotion Law. In the draft presented in October&nbsp;last year, Chinese lawmakers&nbsp;proposed reprimanding parents if a child developed "internet addiction". The law reportedly states that parents should not put excessive academic burden on their kids clearly stating&nbsp;the boundary between family and school education.

The daily said the law aims to implement "double reduction" policy ensuring kids are not burdened with homework and "off-campus tutoring".

Parents who do not fulfil their responsibility in accordance with the new law will bear "legal responsibility", the draft said, with strict "dos and don'ts" in educating children without "mandatory constraints".

The draft proposed to join the protection of minors and the anti-domestic violence law while barring&nbsp;"excessive intervention in family education".

The country's education ministry had earlier limited online gaming hours for children to just one hour limiting it to Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

The China Daily said the new will apply to children aged between 12 and 14 for crimes that cause injury leading to death or severe disabilities by extremely cruel means.

Children in China aged 14 to 16 can be held criminally liable if they intentionally commit serious violent crimes such as murder and rape. However, for most other offences, the age of criminal liability is 16.

The country also amended a criminal law to increase imprisonment terms for securities and futures market crimes which will come into effect from March 1.&nbsp;

The crimes include fraudulent securities issuances and information disclosure fraud with the imprisonment for fraudulent securities issuances raised from five to 15 years.
