A new OpenAI study has revealed that over one million ChatGPT users may have shown signs of suicidal thoughts or mental distress — sparking serious discussions about AI’s role in mental health.

The study, released on October 27, 2025, evaluated ChatGPT’s ability to detect emotional and psychological distress, including signs of psychosis, mania, self-harm, and suicidal intent.
