It is an out and out socially conscious project, coming from Spike Lee who tackled with race issues in “Do the Right Thing” and “Malcolm X”. John David Washington (son of Denzel) portrays the role of an African-American policeman Ron Stallworth, who infiltrated the KKK to gather intelligence in the 1970s.&nbsp;

Three Faces

This film took a toll on the Iranian director Jafar Panahi who suffered at the behest of his film. His government imposed a 20-year filmmaking ban and placed him under house arrest as they convicted him of creating "propaganda against the system". Competing for the Palme d'Or, this film takes us through the adventures of three Iranian actresses at different stages in their careers.&nbsp;

Under the Silver Lake

From the company that delivered critically acclaimed films like “Moonlight”, “Ex Machina” and “Lady Bird”, “Under the Silver Lake” is a movie set in the underworld of hipster Los Angeles. In the film, Riley Keough vanishes and his neighbour Sam (Andrew Garfield) sets out to find her -- establishing the mysterious circumstances that led to her disappearance.&nbsp;

Cannes Film Festival 2018: 5 films to watch out for this year!

Looks like there is going to be a lot of representation from South Asia at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival. Sonam Kapoor, Aishwarya Rai are regular faces at the Cannes red carpet every year but this year Pakistani actress Mahira Khan will also join a bevvy of stars at the French Riviera.&nbsp; 
 
The actor, who was named the first Pakistani brand ambassador for make-up giant L`Oreal last year, took to Instagram to share the news, Geo News reported.

Mahira shared a photograph of Hollywood star Arnold Schwarzenegger at the 1977 Cannes and captioned it: "Cannes 2018, Let`s do this!" The actress though later deleted the image.&nbsp;

Pakistani fashion designer Hassaan Khan congratulated Mahira and wrote, "Couldn't be more proud to have a sister who continues to open doors for future generations of Pakistan women. Mahira Khan to make her debut at Cannes this year

A delegation led by &nbspInformation and Broadcasting Minister Smriti Irani will promote regional cinema at Cannes Film Festival this year. National Award-winning films from Assam, Kerala, West Bengal and Lakshadweep will be showcased by the contingent as they will push for their distribution and exhibition in the global market.

The prestigious film jamboree, where Nandita Das` "Manto" and Rohena Gera`s "Sir" are in separate competition sections, will get under way in the French Riviera on Tuesday.

Assamese film "Village Rockstars", Malayalam film "Bhayanakam", Bengali movie "Nagarkirtan", and "Sinjar", a film from Lakshadweep made in the Jasari language, will be showcased at the festival`s India Pavilion, organised by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting along with Ficci.

"With a strong Indian delegation at the festival, we are positive that the world will see the diversity of our cinema and the exceptional cinematic talent our country possesses," Leena Jaisani, Assistant Secretary General, Ficci, told a news agency.

Irani, who has been persistent in drawing attention to the need to celebrate the country`s regional cinema, will inaugurate the India Pavilion on Wednesday.

The other delegates will include Ashok Kumar Parmar, Joint Secretary (Films), Ministry of Information and Broadcasting Vinod K. Jacob, Joint Secretary, (ED), Ministry of External Affairs Censor Board Chairperson Prasoon Joshi, Censor Board member Vani Tripathi Tikoo, filmmakers Shaji N. Karun, Jahnu Barua and Bharat Bala, as well as actress Parvathy.

Tikoo feels the domestic boundaries within Indian cinema need to go.&nbsp

"It`s either good or bad cinema. The thrust has to be on Indian cinema as good narratives are coming from every region," Tikoo told IANS, adding that it`s high time that as one of the largest film producing nations in the world, "we start respecting our cinema".

She rued how films from languages other than Hindi find relevance within India after gaining "olive branches", referring to the laurel wreaths that movies flaunt after touring international film festivals.

"It should be the reverse," averred Tikoo, who said the idea behind taking such titles to Cannes -- "the largest film market" -- is to ease the struggle a bit for films which have fantastic narratives, but find it hard to get the right exhibition platform.

Bala, known for patriotic videos like "Vande Mataram" and "Jana Gana Mana", pointed out that in the last several years, most Indian films which have got a positioning at foreign fests are regional titles.

"With the presence at Cannes Film Festival, the idea is to get them into the market, find a larger distribution stream and to work on existing co-production treaties," Bala was quoted as saying to a news agency

Actress Rasika Dugal, who will be in Cannes for "Manto", finds it a great initiative.

"There`s a lot of beautiful work happening in films in different parts of India which we don`t hear about... We either get to see it at a film festival or through a friend... So, I think it`s high time it gets a push," Rasika said.

The films apart, the delegation`s focus will be on leveraging co-productions with the countries with which India has co-production treaties, along with the other potential countries, promote ease of film shooting in India and position the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) at festival circuits.

The India Pavilion will also see the launch of "T for Tajmahal", poster of "Bhonsle" by actor Manoj Bajpayee and producer Devashish Makhija, and actor Dhanush-starrer Indo-French co-production "The Extraordinary Journey Of Fakir".

At the main fest, two women filmmakers` projects from India have made it to competition sections. Das` Nawazuddin Siddiqui-starrer "Manto" is in the Un Certain Regard Section, while Gera`s "Sir" is in the Cannes Critics` Week sidebar.

On the red carpet too, there will be women power galore as Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Sonam Kapoor, Deepika Padukone, Kangana Ranaut, Huma Qureshi and Mallika Sherawat will be seen walking the red carpet for various brand endorsements, while actors like Rasika and Tillotama Shome will represent their movies.

The news was shared by festival organisers in a press statement. 
 
The release also said that Terry Gilliam's "The Man Who Killed Don Quixote", starring Adam Driver, Jonathan Pryce and Olga Kurylenko, will close this year's festival as another out-of-competition title. 
 
"The House That Jack Built" stars Matt Dillon, Riley Keough, Bruno Ganz and Uma Thurman. The film is set in Washington State and covers the life and crimes of a serial killer over a 12-year period. 
 
Von Trier, who used to be a regular at the festival, was declared unwelcome at the festival following his controversial comments about Hitler during the 2011 press conference of "Melancholia". 
 
The festival's artistic director Thierry Fremaux recently confirmed von Triers return during an interview with French radio station Europe 1. 
 
Fremaux had said Cannes President Pierre Lesucure has really worked over the past few days to "remove this persona non grata" status which von Trier received seven years ago, "thinking that its maybe time to give him a spot again as a filmmaker". 
 
Von Trier has a long history with the festival, which is known for its fondness for auteurs. He won the Palme d'Or in 2011 for "Dancer In The Dark". 
 
The film's star, Icelandic singer Bjork, had recently accused that an unnamed Danish director had sexually harassed her but von Trier denied his involvement. 
 
Fremaux also confirmed that Cannes competition regular Andrey Zvyagintsev will be a part of the jury headed by Cate Blanchett.&nbsp;The festival will run from May 8 to May 19.&nbsp;

Cannes adds Lars von Trier's 'The House That Jack Built' to its lineup

Saudi Arabia has announced that it will be participating in the Cannes Film Festival this year. The film festival will take place in Cannes, France from 8-19 May.&nbsp 
 
A total of nine short films by young local filmmakers will be screened at the Short Film Corner during the festival on May 14 and 15, reported Variety. 
 
Saudi Film Council, which was recently launched by the country's General Culture Authority (GCA) after the lifting of 35-year-old ban on the films, will also set up a pavilion in order to enable the guests to participate in roundtable discussions with Saudi industry representatives and to understand the Kingdom's industry ambitions through its various initiatives and programmes. 
 
"The kingdom looks forward to its debut presence at the festival, celebrating and supporting the diversity of talent and opportunities within the Saudi film industry,"&nbspSaudi culture minister and chairman of GCA's board Awwad Alawwad said in the statement.

Saudi Arabia has announced that it will be participating in the Cannes Film Festival this year. The film festival will take place in Cannes, France from 8-19 May. Saudi Film Council, which was recently launched by the country's General Culture Authority (GCA) after the lifting of 35-year-old ban on the films, will also set up a pavilion in order to enable the guests to participate in roundtable discussions with Saudi industry representatives and to understand the Kingdom's industry ambitions through its various initiatives and programmes. The organisers of Cannes Film Festival have banned selfies on its red carpet. 
 
The news was shared by festival director Thierry Fremaux in an interview with Variety, saying the art of taking selfies on red carpet is "ridiculous". 
 
"We haven't thought out in practical terms how to carry out this new measure. Since we are not policemen, we will trust attendees and their understanding of the situation: Selfies on the red carpet, in a continuous and touristy way, are ridiculous. 
 
"It tarnishes the quality and tempo of the ascending the steps. Some are protesting and commenting negatively but selfies didn't exist 10 years ago, it's obviously not the most important thing in the world. We go to Cannes to see movies, not to take selfies," Fremaux said. 
 
He said his job is to preserve the "prestige" of the festival. 
 
"...When we're standing on top of the stairs, we can see the vulgarity and the grotesque aspect of those taking selfies on the red carpet and that's when it becomes a vast mess," he added.&nbspFremaux also talked about the festival's new rule which stated that any film which is selected to compete for Cannes will have to be released in French theatres. 
 
The rule was announced last year and was specifically aimed at Netflix-backed projects. Last year, Bong Joon-Ho's Okja&nbspand Noah Baumbach's The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected)&nbspwere screened at the Cannes. 
 
"Last year, I thought I could convince Netflix but they refused (to release films in theatres). That's their economic model, and I respect it. But we are all about cinema and we wish to have films that play in competition get released in theaters. That's the model of film lovers and Netflix must respect it as well. 
 
"But Cannes aspires to welcome all sources of contemporary creativity, and today Amazon and Netflix&nbspand tomorrow perhaps Apple represent something important. Especially because they work with brilliant filmmakers, some of whom are among Cannes' returning auteurs. These new partners of the film sector have a very strong economic footprint.
