Indian student fatally stabbed in Canada, suspect arrested

The government of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau splashed billions in loan to ineligible recipients during the COVID-19 pandemic, an audit report revealed Monday (Dec 2). Auditor General Karen Hogan tabled the report in the House of Commons, which highlighted several irregularities in granting the contract involving public money and ensuring efficiency.

It is to be noted that Ottawa launched its Canadian Emergency Business Account (CEBA) programme in the face of the raging pandemic to help businesses deal with the resultant economic crisis. The programme saw the distribution of more than $49 billion in loan to over 900,000 small businesses. Now, Hogan’s report has found that over $3.5 billion of this fund went to ineligible and wrong beneficiaries.

According to the audit report, Canada’s Department of Finance also failed to provide “effective oversight” of more than $853 million in administrative spending.

“CEBA represented a significant expenditure of public funds to support small Canadian businesses facing economic challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic,” Hogan’s report highlighted.

“While there was some flexibility in how government organisations approached programme planning, reporting, and contract processes during the pandemic to achieve results quickly, there was still an expectation of due diligence and controls around how public money was spent,” the report added.

It said the Trudeau government failed to manage the programme and over-relied on a single private contractor —Accenture, a global IT giant— to manage the fund.

Of the $230 million budget set aside for contract spending, almost 91 per cent went to Accenture, which was awarded the contract without competition.

The audit report highlighted how the Trudeau government didn’t have a plan in place to collect loan payments if businesses default on them.

Of the total loans dished out, more than $8.5 billion were still to be repaid by businesses at the end of March this year.

Justin Trudeau had an "excellent conversation" with Donald Trump at the president-elect's Florida estate, Canada's prime minister said Saturday, as the United States' neighbours scramble to blunt the impact of Trump's trade threats.

Trudeau flew for a dinner at Mar-a-Lago on Friday, after Trump earlier this week announced plans for import tariffs against Canada and Mexico and rival China.

"It was an excellent conversation," Trudeau told reporters Saturday morning as he was leaving a hotel in West Palm Beach to catch a flight back to Canada.

Trudeau was the latest high-profile guest of Trump, whose impending second term -- which starts in January -- is already overshadowing the last few months of President Joe Biden's administration.

A photograph released by Pennsylvania Senator-elect David McCormick showed Trump and Trudeau side-by-side at the table, surrounded by a dozen guests including Howard Lutnick, Donald Trump's pick for commerce secretary, and Mike Waltz, his choice for national security advisor.

In a social media post on Monday, Trump said he would slap a 25 per cent tariff on Mexico and Canada, accusing the two US neighbours of allowing an "invasion" of the United States by illicit drugs, namely fentanyl, and undocumented migrants.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum spoke with Trump by phone on Wednesday, though the two leaders' accounts of the conversation differed drastically.

Trump claimed that Mexico's left-wing president had "agreed to stop migration through Mexico, and into the United States, effectively closing our Southern Border."

Sheinbaum later said she had discussed US-supported anti-migration policies that have long been in place in Mexico.

She said that after that, the talks had no longer revolved around the threat of tariff hikes, downplaying the risk of a trade war.

Biden warned that same day that Trump's tariff threats could "screw up" Washington's relationships with Ottawa and Mexico City.

"I think it's a counterproductive thing to do," Biden told reporters.

For Canada, the stakes of any new tariffs are high.

More than three-quarters of Canadian exports, or Can$592.7 billion ($423 billion), went to the United States last year, and nearly two million Canadian jobs are dependent on trade.

A Canadian government source told AFP that Canada is considering possible retaliatory tariffs against the United States.

Some analysts have suggested Trump's tariff threat may be bluster or an opening salvo in future trade negotiations. But Trudeau rejected those views when he spoke with reporters earlier in Prince Edward Island province.

"Donald Trump, when he makes statements like that, he plans on carrying them out," Trudeau said. "There's no question about it.

A Canadian court issued an interlocutory injunction which prohibits Khalistan protesters from gathering within 100 metres of the premises of the Lakshmi Narayan Temple in Toronto.

The Lakshmi Narayan Mandir Hindu Cultural Society in Scarborough released a statement saying that the order by the Canadian court was aimed at ensuring the safety and sanctity of the temple.

“The Superior Court of Justice in Toronto, Ontario, has issued an interlocutory injunction prohibiting all protest activities, including physically preventing, or interfering with access to within a 100-metre radius of the Lakshmi Narayan Temple in Scarborough from 8 am to 6 pm on Saturday, November 30th, 2024. This order aims to ensure the safety and sanctity of the temple premises and individuals during the specified hours,” the society said.

“The Hindu Cultural Society Shree Lakshmi Narayan Mandir Scarborough extends its heartfelt gratitude to the Toronto Police Service and 42 Division for their outstanding support in facilitating the Indian Consular Camp held at our temple. Your commitment to ensuring the safety and security of our community during this important event was exemplary and greatly appreciated. By providing a secure and welcoming environment, you enabled countless community members to access vital consular services with peace of mind. We are truly thankful for your dedication and partnership, which contribute to fostering harmony and trust within our diverse community. Thank you for your service!” the statement further added.

This comes after Khalistani elements launched a violent attack on Hindu devotees at the Hindu Sabha temple early in November. The radicals wanted to disrupt the event, co-organised by the Indian Consulate.

They clashed with people outside the temple and threatened the security of Indian officials.

The brazen attack even prompted a reaction from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who took to X to condemn this “deliberate attack.”

"I strongly condemn the deliberate attack on a Hindu temple in Canada. Equally appalling are the cowardly attempts to intimidate our diplomats. Such acts of violence will never weaken India's resolve," PM Modi posted on X.

"We expect the Canadian government to ensure justice and uphold the rule of law," the Indian leader added.

USA News: Canada PM In Florida To Meet Trump: Reports

Canada's Competition Bureau has filed a lawsuit against Alphabet's Google, alleging that the tech giant engaged in anti-competitive behaviour in the online advertising sector.

The application filed by the Bureau before the Competition Tribunal is seeking a court order compelling Google to divest two of its key ad technology tools. The watchdog is also seeking a penalty to ensure Google complies with Canada's competition laws.

Google responded to this claim, saying that the suit "overlooks the incredibly competitive nature of the ad-buying market, with a large number of willing buyers and sellers."

According to Google, "our ad tech tools help websites and apps pay for their content, and help businesses of all sizes connect with new customers." Google VP of Global Ads Dan Taylor said in response to the complaint that he and the company look forward to the opportunity to explain its position in court.

The Competition Bureau initiated investigations into Google in 2020. The agency of competition probed whether or not the company had ever indulged in anti-competitive practices in the advertisement business line online.

The research expanded early this year as it went beyond Google's merely search business to its advertisement technology services. The agency stated that Google has controlled the majority share of the nation's ad tech market with the aid of its allegedly anticompetitive methods, said the Bureau.

This lawsuit comes in tandem with similar antitrust initiatives launched by the US Department of Justice that alleged Google is monopolising the market for publisher ad servers and advertiser ad networks.

Google defended its activities and said the US case was selective as it focused only on one portion of the online advertisement business while ignoring competition in other sectors.

It said the decisions made for its business are legitimate, and that there is competition in the marketplace.

Reuters earlier this year reported Google trying to end an antitrust investigation in the European Union by offering to sell an ad exchange platform. It said European publishers rejected this offer as insufficient to remedy the issues raised by a competition probe.

The president-elect declared that he would enact universal tariffs on the first day and that they would remain in effect until China, Canada, and Mexico stopped the influx of migrants and narcotics.

US Mexico: Trade War Looms Between Mexico & US

US President-elect Donald Trump on Monday (Nov 25) said that he will impose a massive 25 per cent tariff on all products which will be imported from Mexico and Canada over the neighbouring countries' failure to crack down on illegal immigration and drugs trade. He also vowed to slap another 10 per cent tariff on China over drug trafficking.

“As everyone is aware, thousands of people are pouring through Mexico and Canada, bringing Crime and Drugs at levels never seen before,” wrote Trump on his social media platform Truth Social.

It is important to levy the duty to crack down on drug smuggling and illegal immigration in the northern and southern parts of America, he said while announcing the many first decisions that he would take as the US commander-in-chief.

“Right now a caravan coming from Mexico, composed of thousands of people, seems to be unstoppable in its quest to come through our currently Open Border," he added.

The president-elect spoke about his first of “many” executive orders which he will take on January 20.

The imposition of tariffs on products from Canada and Mexico could be a deathknell to Nafta, the a regional free trade agreement of America with its neighbours.

The government of Canada has taken the decision to go ahead with a "direct indictment" against four Indian nationals who are facing accusations of killing Khalistani separatist leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar, as per Indian media reports.

With this decision, the pre-trial proceedings have been stayed in the Surrey Provincial Court and the case will go directly to the Supreme Court.

The four Indian citizens—Amandeep Singh, Kamalpreet Singh, Karanpreet Singh, and Karan Brar—were earlier set to appear for a hearing in the Surrey Provincial Court on November 21, but now this stands cancelled, and they will appear on February 11, 2025.

Canada’s food crisis has grown so intense that over 25 per cent of parents in the country are forced to reduce their own intake in order to ensure their children have enough to eat, a survey has found. Salvation Army, a non-profit charity organisation, released the details of the survey earlier this month, which revealed that Canadian parents are facing a "disproportionate number of challenges" related to the cost of living.

"The reality is that many Canadians continue to have trouble meeting their daily basic needs for themselves and, much more importantly, for their children and their family members," a spokesperson of the group was quoted as saying by CBC News. "And that, for us as an organisation, signals a deep, deep crisis for us in the country," he added.

The group also revealed that 90 per cent of the respondents have cut down expenses on groceries to have enough money for other financial obligations.

Canadian authorities have uncovered and thwarted an alleged Iranian plot to assassinate a former justice minister who has been a strong critic of Tehran.

As per AFP, 84-year-old Irwin Cotler, a stalwart advocate for global human rights, was informed on October 26 that he faced an immediate threat, with Iranian agents allegedly planning an assassination within 48 hours.

The assassination bid was first reported by The Globe and Mail and has been confirmed by Cotler's organisation, the Raoul Wallenberg Centre for Human Rights.

Citing sources, the publication revealed that Canadian authorities tracked two suspects tied to the plot, though details about arrests remain undisclosed.

Irwin Cotler served as Canada's justice minister and attorney general from 2003 to 2006. Although he retired from politics in 2015, he has remained active in championing human rights causes worldwide.

Cotler, already under police protection for more than a year following threats linked to his advocacy, has remained publicly silent about the specifics.

Public Safety Minister Dominic LeBlanc declined to comment, citing operational security: "We cannot comment on, nor confirm, specific RCMP (Royal Canadian Mounted Police) operations due to security reasons."

François-Philippe Champagne, a cabinet minister, described the alleged plot as "very concerning."

Jean-Yves Duclos, the government's senior minister in Quebec province, said it was likely "very difficult for (Cotler), in particular, and his family and friends to hear" about it.

This is not the first time Cotler's name has emerged in relation to Iranian threats. He was previously linked to an FBI investigation into a 2022 plot targeting Masih Alinejad, a US-based human rights activist, allegedly orchestrated by Iranian operatives.

Cotler has been a vocal proponent of listing Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organisation—a step Canada officially took in June. Iranian authorities, Canada asserted, have consistently displayed "disregard for human rights both inside and outside of Iran, as well as a willingness to destabilize the international rules-based order."

Trump on his campaign trail had promised to impose a minimum tariff of 10 per cent on all imports entering the United States. Leah Scarpelli, a partner at the Washington law firm ArentFox Schiff, was quoted as saying by CBC News that while he was not expecting any specific tariff targeting Canada, “I think the risk for Canada is that you just get swept in with tariffs on everywhere.”

Ottawa itself is worried over looming uncertainties; however, Joly claimed no country was better equipped than Canada to deal with Trump.

“If there’s a country in the world that understands the United States, it’s Canada,” Joly said. “That’s why there are so many delegations, so many countries, coming to see us to ask about how we, they, can adapt.”

“I think Canada’s influence is actually increasing because of the impacts that the world is now facing with the new administration,” she added.

An Indian family of four froze to death while attempting to slip into the United States from Canada in January 2022, as the temperature dropped to minus 36 Fahrenheit (minus 38 Celsius) in the country.

The Gujarati family included Jagdish Patel, his wife Vaishaliben, and their two young children.

The three-year-old, Dharmik Patel, Jagdish’s son, was found frozen in the arms of his father, wrapped in a blanket.

They were among a group of 11 Indians who were trying to enter the US through a near-empty stretch of the Canadian border.

The Patels were travelling on foot to reach a van driver in northern Minnesota in 2022, navigating the cold farm fields as the temperature dipped.

Currently, two men accused of running a smuggling ring on either side of the US-Canada border are awaiting trial, scheduled for Monday (Nov 18).

The accused were identified as Harshkumar Patel alias "Dirty Harry", an experienced smuggler, who was coordinating things from Canada, and Steve Shand, a driver recruited by Harshkumar, was on the US side.

Both were accused of being part of a sophisticated human smuggling operation, which has been feeding a fast-growing population of Indians illegally living in the US.

However, both have pleaded not guilty.

On his last trip in January 2022, Shand was about to pick up 11 more Indian migrants, including the Patels. However, only seven survived the extreme cold.

The smuggling network was reportedly charging up to $90,000 per person. Meanwhile, many families like the Patels sold their farmlands or used heavy savings to fund these journeys.

It wasn’t until much later that the Canadian authorities found the Patel family who had died due to the extreme cold.

Winner of the 2024 United States presidential election Donald Trump’s pick for border czar, Tom Homan, has raised concerns over criminals and terrorists making their way to the US through the ill-guarded US-Canada border, warning that Ottawa must be prepared for “tough conversations” in coming months. This comes after India over the past months has raised similar concerns over Canada providing refuge to criminals and Khalistani terrorists wanted in India.

"The problem with the northern border is a huge national security issue," said Homan in an interview with 7News. Homan added that fixing the crisis at the northern border will be his top priority.

The Khalistanis in Canada have been seen calling Canadians 'invaders,' and during a religious procession (Nagar Kirtan), they told them to "go back to Europe and England". After blaming India and Indians for their own miseries, the Khalistani sympathisers have now turned to target the Canadians. In a viral video shared on X, during a religious event Khalistani sympathisers were seen saying, “This is Canada, our own country. You [Canadians] go back.” In the video, the voice can also be heard saying “white people are invaders” and “We are owners of Canada.” Khalistanis march around Surrey BC and claim “we are the owners of Canada” and “white people should go back to Europe and Israel”. India seeking Khalistani terrorist Arshdeep Dalla’s extradition following his arrest in Canada

Canada's immigration minister, Marc Miller, has taken a hardline stance on immigration and stated that “not everyone is welcome” in Canada. This comes, as the country braces for a potential influx of migrants fleeing the US to escape the mass deportations US President-elect Donald Trump has pledged.

Canada changing tunes?

Miller’s statement, as per the Guardian, is a notable departure from Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s 2017 promise that “Canadians will welcome” asylum seekers.

As per the report, experts have chalked up this shift in tone on immigration and refugee policy to the dwindling public support for immigration.

Trump's mass deportation

The US President-elect Donald Trump has vowed to enact mass deportation once he assumes office in January. Tom Homan, Trump's newly nominated 'Border Czar' on Monday, said that the incoming Trump 2.0 administration would target those living illegally in the US and who they consider a public safety threat.

Migration experts have predicted that Trump’s return to office could trigger significant migration to Canada, as undocumented people in the US seek refuge north of the border.

During Donald Trump’s first term, thousands of Haitians fled the US, seeking asylum in Canada after losing temporary protected status in America.

At that time, Trudeau took to social media to say: “To those fleeing persecution, terror & war, Canadians will welcome you, regardless of your faith. Diversity is our strength #WelcomeToCanada.”

However, recently, Canada Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland said her government “absolutely recognize[d] the importance to border security and of controlling our own border, of controlling who comes into Canada and who doesn’t”.

Reportedly, Canada’s federal police force has been developing a strategy for “several months” to manage potential increases in border crossings.

However, migration experts have slammed the government’s shift. Audrey Macklin, a law professor at the University of Toronto, said: “Canada’s first and only response to what might be persecution in a neighbouring country is, ‘How do we prevent people from escaping to our country?’ It’s certainly familiar, unsurprising, and disappointing.”
