The giants can grow up to three metres long and can weigh up to 300 kg. The Mekong fish are found only in southeast Asia’s Mekong River. But over time, they have inhabited the entire river which is 4,900km long. The river starts in Vietnam and ends in China’s Yunnan province.

The population of giant catfish has dropped by around 80 per cent in recent decades due to overfishing. The construction of dams blocking the path for the fish to migrate has also played a role in their population decrease.

The six giant fish were found in five days. The first two were on the Tonle Sap River, which is near the capital city of Phnom Penh. On Tuesday (Dec 10), four more giants were found by fishermen which were later released after identification. Notably, two of the fish were longer than two meters.&nbsp;

“It’s a hopeful sign that the species is not in imminent, like in the next few years, risk of extinction, which gives conservation activities time to be implemented and to continue to bend the curve away from decline and toward recovery,” Dr Zeb Hogan, a University of Nevada Reno research biologist who leads the US Agency for International Development-funded Wonders of the Mekong project, told BBC.

The Kandal Provincial Court sentenced the 13 women to four years in prison along with two years of suspension.

The court stated that it possessed strong evidence which proved the intention of the women to have babies "to sell to a third person in exchange for money, which is an act of human trafficking".

It is not expected that the women will serve jail before giving birth and the court did not specify what will be the future of the babies after they were born.

In Cambodia, surrogacy is illegal, however, agencies have still been offering the service. This case has been unusual in its nature because normally surrogates are employed in their own countries and do not get transported elsewhere.

<h2>How did the police catch the pregnant surrogates?</h2>

The police found the women when they carried out a raid in a villa near the capital Phnom Penh on September 23.

After the women were arrested, Undersecretary in the Philippines Department of Justice Nicholas Felix Ty said that the women themselves had been "victims of human trafficking".

However, the idea was rejected by Cambodian Interior Minister Chou Bun Eng who said that the women were responsible.

Bun Eng said that the police also caught four Vietnamese women and seven Filipino women, however, they were not pregnant and hence, were deported.

The court said that a Cambodian woman was imprisoned for two months and one day because they were found to have acted as an accomplice to the mothers and cooked meals for them.

The commercial surrogacy industry saw a boom in Cambodia in 2016 after their neighbouring country Thailand made the practice illegal.

The Cambodian government later banned surrogacy, however, it still continued to thrive.

According to AFP news agency, couples from China are willing to pay agencies somewhere between $40,000 (£31,600) and $100,000 (£79,000) &nbsp;for arranging a surrogate Cambodian mother.

Vietnam, Thailand and other countries in the region - several having territorial disputes with China over the South China Sea - worry that China is engaging in a strategic encirclement of the Southeast Asian region.&nbsp;

The US is also worried about the Chinese footprint in the region, said the BBC report.

The agreement concluded in 2004, was designed to facilitate cooperation on trade and migration in four northeastern provinces of Cambodia and border areas in Laos and Vietnam.

Hun Manet labelled opposition groups as extremists, saying they were manipulating the issue to abuse and attack the government and bamboozle the people.

“For instance, allegations that the government ceded the territory of the four northeastern provinces to foreign countries, etc," he wrote in a post late Friday.

He said that in the last 25 years, Cambodia has built many achievements for the development of four provinces, but his government decided to pull out of the agreement, “taking into account people’s concern on territory and the need to withdraw weapons out of the hands of extremists to prevent them from using CLV-DTA to further cheat people."

Action for Primates, or AfP, said that the monkeys might be sent to breeding farms that export animals to such labs following the census that has been announced by the government.&nbsp;

Cambodia’s Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries, in a bid to control the population of monkeys displaying aggressive behaviour, has announced that a census of the primates will be carried out in public areas. Such animals will be sent to legal breeding farms, natural habitats, or the Phnom Tamao Zoo.

An official told the Phnom Penh Post that the operation to capture the monkeys is expected to start after the Pchum Ben festival in October.

AfP says the monkeys have turned aggressive because of being treated like a tourist attraction, which has created an unnatural dependency on humans for food.&nbsp;

"Sending them to breeding farms is exceptionally cruel. The monkeys at Angkor Wat are paying the price for inappropriate and preventable human behaviour," Sarah Kite, a founder of AfP, said.

She also accused the videographers of exploiting wild monkey troops to make money.&nbsp;

“You wouldn’t run through St Peters in Rome or any Western church, so why is it OK to do it in Cambodia?” Warrack said, as reported by the South China Morning Post.&nbsp;

“It’s not just potential damage to the stones by people bumping into them and falling or knocking things over – which is real – but it’s also damage to the spiritual and cultural value of the temples," he added.

Warrack said he has discussed the issue with Cambodian counterparts and officials who look after the complex.&nbsp;

He claimed to have found a plane while scanning satellite imagery on Google Maps. Daily Mirror, Daily Star, and Daily Record again published his comments, which became one of the top searches on Google. But are his claims true?&nbsp;&nbsp;

The UK-based expert&nbsp;claimed that he found remains of the missing Malaysia Airlines plane scattered in a jungle in Cambodia.&nbsp;As quoted in the reports, he said: "Measuring the Google sighting, you're looking at around 69 metres, but there looks to be a gap between the tail and the back of the plane. It's just slightly bigger, but there's a gap that would probably account for that."&nbsp;

Previous reports have mentioned that a few bits of debris washed up on an island in the Indian Ocean, but besides that, the authorities did not find any trace of the wreck and no one knows what exactly happened to the plane. However, numerous conspiracy theories do exist.&nbsp;

Earlier this year in March, a Texas-based company, Ocean Infinity, announced a proposal for a new search in the southern Indian Ocean where the plane is believed to have crashed.&nbsp;

A United Nations report showed that last year, more than 100,000 people globally were trafficked into online scam centres in Cambodia.

Every year, thousands of people, most of them with technical skills, get lured by advertisements on social media platforms promising well-paid jobs in countries like Cambodia, Laos, and Myanmar. More often than not, they find themselves forced to be a part of scams to fraud strangers worldwide via the internet.

In conversation with Thompson Reuters Foundation, a victim of the scam, a 41-year-old man, identified only as Sahu revealed that he was offered the chance to earn $900 a month in Vietnam as a data entry operator with free meals and accommodation last June. The man who was earning only a fraction of this in India jumped at the opportunity.

"I started imagining a great future," he said.

Once he arrived in Vietnam, he was smuggled into neighbouring Cambodia. His passport was taken from him, and he was lodged in a tiny room, where he was given food only once a day and was forced to scam people online.

Bayon is an elaborate Buddhist temple built in the 12th century at the same complex that includes the iconic Angkor Wat temple.

The temple has always been a pilgrimage site for Buddhists&nbsp;but with the discovery of the statue last week, the pond site will also attract attention.

Bayon was built as the state temple of King Jayavarman VII and stands at the centre of Jayavaraman’s capital, Angkor Thom, as per Cambodia’s APSARA National Authority, which manages the complex.

Recently, the pond situated at the Bayon temple caught the eye of archaeologists as they believe&nbsp;it holds many secrets.&nbsp;

The sandstone turtle statue was found buried in the middle of the disappeared pond.

According to Cambodia’s Heritage Protection Police Department’s Facebook post on April 22, the statue was recovered from a depth of about five feet.

The Cambodian police said the statue measured about 22 inches in length, 17 inches in width and eight inches in height.

The exact weight of the statue is not known, but photos showed that it took three people to lift the ancient statue from the site.

The figure “is believed to be the symbol of happiness, prosperity, and development,” Long Kosal, a spokesperson for APSARA National Authority, told Khmer Times, a Cambodian news outlet.

Archaeologists did not provide an exact age of the statue, but Kosal told Khmer Times that the dried-up pond was also built in the 12th century as part of the Bayon temple, so they believe that the statue also belongs to the same timeline.&nbsp;

“While many believed there was nothing left to find, our archaeological research has uncovered evidence that Bayon temple actually boasted two ponds on its eastern side,” Kosal told the Phnom Penh Post.&nbsp;

Excavations of the dry pond also uncovered “thousands of pieces of ancient stone, some of which are recognised to be part of some big statues,” Kosal told Khmer Times.

The project is ongoing.

The turtle statue has been moved to the Preah Norodom Sihanouk-Angkor Museum in Siem Reap, police said.
