<p>The talks between Dhankhar and the Cambodian king "covered multiple areas of bilateral relations, including capacity building, conservation of architectural monuments, defence cooperation, including de-mining, and parliamentary cooperation," according to MEA spokesperson Arindam Bagchi.</p>

<p>The Vice President Secretariat said in a second tweet that Dhankhar recalled the warm welcome and good discussions he had during his visit to Cambodia for the India-ASEAN and East Asia Summits in November 2022.</p>

<p>The state visit concludes the 70th anniversary of diplomatic ties between India and Cambodia, which were established in 1952, according to a statement from the MEA.</p>

<p>Bagchi stated that the visit was a chance to strengthen civilisational ties between India and Cambodia. This is the first visit by a Cambodian king in over six decades, the latest being that of the present king's father in 1963.</p>

<p>King Sihamoni will also hold discussions&nbsp;with the President Murmu and PM Modi on a bilateral basis. President&nbsp;Murmu will also host&nbsp;a state banquet&nbsp;in his honour.</p>

The police chief also said that a two-year-old girl was killed and eaten by crocodiles in her family’s reptile farm in the same village back in 2019.&nbsp;</p>

40 crocodiles tear apart Cambodian man after he accidentally falls into their enclosure

<p>The Cambodian election commission, on Monday (May 15) refused to register and disqualified the sole opposition Candlelight Party (CP) from contesting in the upcoming elections in July. This comes after the CP failed to submit certain documents, said the officials, in a statement.</p>

<p>The move would also leave incumbent Prime Minister Hun Sen’s ruling Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) running virtually unopposed. While there are other parties in the country who have registered for the July 23 elections, CP being the main opposition to one of the world’s longest-serving leaders it is seen as the only viable challenger to Hun Sen’s ruling CPP.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Notably, over the years the incumbent PM, who has been in power for nearly four decades now, has garnered criticism as activists and diplomats accuse him of using the legal system to crush the opposition especially prior to elections.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As opposed to the newly reincarnated CP from the Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) which is just over a year old. The CNRP had been disbanded in 2017 after a ruling by the country’s Supreme Court which led to a landslide victory for the CPP. Hun Sen’s party won every seat after the opposition CNRP had been&nbsp;dissolved ahead of the national elections in 2018.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to reports, several CRNP members have either been detained or convicted of crimes while many have fled the Southeast Asian country following Hun Sen’s crackdown on critics. However, Candlelight deputy president Son Chhay, as per Reuters, has said that they would appeal this move in the constitutional court.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Last month, Human Rights Watch, an international organisation, accused the Cambodian government of stepping up attacks on the opposition which led to assaults against members of CP.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Foreign governments need to send a clear message, that “dismantling opposition parties and disqualifying, assaulting, and arresting their members before election day means that there won't be any real election at all,” stated the HRW, in a statement on April 24.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Next month will mark the 50th anniversary of Project Tiger which began in 1973 at the Corbett national park. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to attend a conference in Mysore and laud the efforts of wildlife conservation activists and officials involved whilst releasing tiger census data for 2022.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Kem Sokha was arrested nearly six years ago over accusations of conspiring with the US to overthrow the government of incumbent Prime Minister Hun Sen, who has been in power for at least four decades now.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“Kem Sokha...is sentenced to 27 years in detention&nbsp;on the charge of collusion with foreigners committed in Cambodia and other places,” said Judge Koy Sao. The judge at a municipal court in the capital city of Phnom Penh also barred the opposition figure from running for political office or voting in elections.</p>

<p>According to reports, Kem Sokha was arrested in September 2017 in a midnight raid on his home without a warrant. Two months after his arrest, in 2018, CNPR was disbanded while the allegations against the opposition figure have since been denied by him as well as Washington, which termed them “fabricated conspiracy theories”.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Following the verdict, the 69-year-old was taken to his home, where he will be placed under house arrest and only allowed to meet family members, as per media reports. His lawyer,&nbsp;Ang Udom, said his legal team would appeal the verdict</p>

<p>Speaking to the press outside the court, the US Ambassador to Cambodia W Patrick Murphy slammed the verdict and called it a “miscarriage of justice”.&nbsp;He added, “We call on authorities to allow all Cambodians to enjoy...universal human rights of peaceful assembly and free expression and to participate in building a truly democratic system.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>The first outbreak of avian influenza A (H5N1) virus in humans occurred in Hong Kong in 1997. Till that year, the cases of bird flu were not taken to be posing a major threat. The 1997 outbreak was put to an end by a carrying out a massive culling of over 1.5 million chickens.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Even though many of these cases are a result of direct touch with infected poultry, it must be noted that the nature of influenza viruses are constantly evolving. With this, there are concerns if the virus could evolve to spread more easily between people.</p>

<p>The newly reported case is from the rural southeastern province of Prey Veng. The girl fell sick on February 16 and was taken to a Phnom Penh hospital.&nbsp;Later on Wednesday, she was diagnosed with a fever of up to 39 Celsius (102 Fahrenheit) along with other symptoms including coughing and throat pain. Soon, she was declared dead, the news agency said quoting country's health ministry.&nbsp;</p>

As per WHO, Cambodia had 56 human cases of H5N1 from 2003 through 2014 and 37 of them were fatal.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to the directive, the media outlet named Voice of Democracy, more colloquially known as VOD will cease to have the rights to broadcast anything from Monday.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In a lengthy Facebook message, Hun Sen said he refused to accept the apology from the media outlet. Notably, VOD, last Wednesday published a story detailing Cambodia's earthquake aid to Turkey.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The story suggested that Hun Sen's son Hun Manet, the current deputy commander of the armed forces had signed the aid agreement, which was overstepping the bounds of his position.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen said on Monday that the country will be constructing conservation zones on the Mekong River in order to protect endangered dolphins. In the past month, three dolphins were killed by fishing nets on the 190-km stretch from the Kratie province to the Laos border. During a ceremony, Hun Sen said that there will be a complete ban on fishing around the conservation zones and floating markets will also be created to attract tourists.</p>

<p>"The Mekong River, which is home to near-extinct dolphins and fish species, must be well managed so that dolphins will not die from entanglement in gillnets," he said according to AFP.</p>

<p>"The dolphin areas must be protected completely," he added.</p>

<p>The Irrawaddy dolphins were once extremely common in the Kratie province but their population has dipped massively since the first official records in 1997. At that point, there were 200 dolphins in the region but habitat loss and fishing has resulted in the number going down to around 90.</p>

<p>The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) reported that 11 dolphins lost their lives in 2022 taking the death toll in the last three years to 29. The organisation also urged all the authorities involved in the region "to enact and roll-out appropriate measures to urgently address the mortality".</p>

<p>The dolphins are found in various water bodies around Myanmar, Indonesia, India and Thailand. Cambodia had the highest population in the recent times and they also attracted a major part of the tourism in the region.</p>

<p>Experts have urged the government and other authorities in the United States to raise investment in lab monkey breeding programmes and stop importing non-human primates for laboratory use.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Concerns were raised when documents from the American Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) revealed that deadly pathogenic agents, zoonotic bacteria and viruses entered the country with imported monkeys.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The monkeys were imported from Asia between 2018 and 2021, The Guardian reported after seeing the documents, which were obtained by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (Peta).&nbsp;</p>

<p>Also, a case study by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science revealed that there have been six cases of Burkholderia pseudomallei identified in primates imported from Cambodia to the US.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As per the report, US-listed Charles River and Inotiv are among the largest suppliers of lab monkeys to the pharmaceutical industry recently issued a warning to investors that they expect disruption to US imports from Cambodia, a report by the Financial Times stated.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Dr Lisa Jones-Engel, who is a Peta senior science adviser, told The Guardian, "There is no indication that the CDC or research industries have been transparent with the public about these diseased monkeys."&nbsp;</p>

<p>As quoted by Financial Times, Matthew Bailey, the president at the National Association for Biomedical Research, said, "If companies and academic researchers can't get the non-human primate [monkeys] research models they need — then the work stops. You can say goodbye to new vaccines and drugs."&nbsp;</p>

<p>Bailey added that "it is of crucial importance to public health and national security."&nbsp;</p>

<p>The report further mentioned a case study of Melioidosis, which is an uncommon but potentially fatal disease in humans caused by the bacterium B pseudomallei.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The bacteria are native to southeast Asia and are brought on by contact with the pathogen through soil or water. According to the CDC, B pseudomallei is a "Tier 1 select agent" with the potential to be used in bioterrorism and has a death rate of up to 50 per cent.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In a research paper, which was published last week, details of a case are mentioned when one of the macaques in the US was diagnosed with B pseudomallei. The primate entered the US from Cambodia by air with 359 other macaques and was in quarantine when the diagnosis was done in Texas in January 2021.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In America, the imported non-human primates, or NHPs, are held in CDC-mandated quarantine for 31 days while undergoing testing for infectious diseases.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Amid concerns, the macaque was euthanized and other monkeys shipped with the infected monkey "appeared healthy at the end of the quarantine period and were released from CDC-mandated quarantine", the report mentioned.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The report titled "Melioidosis in a Cynomolgus Macaque Imported to the United States from Cambodia", stated that the global movement of humans and animals can introduce&nbsp;<em>B pseudomallei</em>&nbsp;into nonendemic regions of the United States.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As quoted by Guardian, Jones-Engel said: "Monkeys imported from Asia can harbour the Burkholderia pathogen for months, shedding the bacteria via their feces, urine, blood and saliva into the environment. The CDC knows the danger to humans and has failed to warn the public."&nbsp;</p>

<p>The study suggested that in order to prevent the introduction of infectious agents to the US, CDC requires newly imported primates to be "quarantined for at least 31 d, during which time their health is closely monitored".&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to the White House, US President Joe Biden, who undergoes routine COVID-19 testing, received a negative result on Tuesday morning.&nbsp;</p>
