The benchmark BSE Sensex rebounded over 180 points in early trade Tuesday led by gains in index heavyweights RIL, HDFC Bank and ITC, amid unabated foreign fund inflow.

The 30-share index was trading 152.78 points or 0.40 per cent higher at 38,797.96. The NSE Nifty too rose to 40.35 points or 0.35 per cent to 11,634.80.

In the previous session, the BSE bourse settled 495.10 points, or 1.26 per cent, lower at 38,645.18; while the broader Nifty tumbled 158.35 points, or 1.35 per cent, to close at 11,594.45.

Equities took a beating Monday as macroeconomic worries resurfaced. The Trump administration decided not to renew waiver that let countries like India buy Iranian oil without facing US sanctions.

However, investor sentiment turned positive in early trade Tuesday on reports that India has lined up alternate sources to make up for the likely shortfall in supplies after the US decided not to give waiver from its sanctions for buying oil from the Persian Gulf nation, traders said.

Top gainers leading the gains on Sensex were ONGC, Yes Bank, Hero MotoCorp, RIL, Sun Pharma, ITC, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, Coal India, ITC and Bajaj Finance, rising up to 1.97 per cent.

On the other hand, L&amp;T, TCS, NTPC, Tata Motors, PowerGrid and Tata Steel were the top losers, shedding up to 1.36 per cent.

"As we head into the week, Q4FY19 numbers will be watched closely by market participants," said Hemang Jani, Head - Advisory, Sharekhan by BNP Paribas, adding that 2019 general election continues to remain the crucial near term event for the market.

Voting began Tuesday for 116 Lok Sabha seats, including all constituencies in Gujarat and Kerala, with BJP president Amit Shah, Congress chief Rahul Gandhi and several Union ministers among prominent candidates in the fray.

Meanwhile, foreign institutional investors (FIIs) purchased equity worth Rs 73.08 crore on Monday, while domestic institutional investors (DIIs) sold shares to the tune of Rs 68.16 crore, provisional data available with stock exchanges showed.

The rupee appreciated 9 paise to 69.58 against the US dollar in early trade.

Sensex rises over 100 points ahead of TCS, Infy earnings

Equity benchmarks closed in the green for the second straight session Friday as investors looked forward to the earnings season with measured optimism amid an uncertain global growth environment.

After rising over 200 points intra-day, the 30-share BSE Sensex finally settled 160.10 points, or 0.41 per cent, higher at 38,767.11, led by FMCG, auto and banking stocks. The broader NSE Nifty rose 46.75 points, or 0.40 per cent, to 11,643.45.

During the week, the Sensex fell 95.12 points or 0.24 per cent, while the Nifty shed 22.5 points or 0.19 per cent.

"General elections and upcoming Q4FY19 numbers will remain the crucial triggers for the market in the short term. On the earnings front, we expect that a low base effect, turnaround in profitability of corporate lending banks and healthy growth in earnings of energy companies are expected to largely drive aggregate Sensex earnings," said Hemang Jani, Head - Advisory, Sharekhan by BNP Paribas.

ITC was the biggest gainer in the Sensex pack, rallying 3.14 per cent. Maruti Suzuki, Axis Bank, Hero MotoCorp, Vedanta, Asian Paints, M&amp;M, HUL, Bajaj Auto and PowerGrid were among the other top gainers, rising up to 2.13 per cent.

On the other hand, Bharti Airtel, Bajaj Finance, L&amp;T, Tata Motors, IndusInd Bank, Tata Steel, HCL Tech and ONGC were among the top laggards, shedding up to 1.71 per cent.

IT bellwether Infosys ended 0.63 per cent higher, while rival TCS slipped 0.26 per cent ahead of their quarterly earnings.

Sectorally, BSE FMCG index gained the most, spurting 1.71 per cent, followed by utilities, power, auto and banking, rising up to 1.12 per cent.

Broader indices rose in line with the benchmarks. The BSE Midcap index gained 0.29 per cent, while the small-cap gauge ended 0.37 per cent higher.

According to Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Financial Services, market turned positive despite a weak rupee as investors remain focused on the upcoming earnings season.

"Banks outperformed as CPI inflation data (to be released later in the day) is expected to be under RBI's targeted level... Earnings season will give direction to the market while investors are also keen on the ongoing&nbsp; 
election to gain confidence," he added.

Meanwhile, foreign institutional investors (FIIs) net bought shares worth Rs 476.51 crore on Thursday, while domestic institutional investors (DIIs) sold equities to the tune of Rs 16.58 crore, provisional data available with stock exchanges showed.

Global markets were mixed amid global growth concerns, which were partially offset by positive China exports data.

In Asia, Hong Kong's Hang Seng rose 0.24 per cent, Japan's Nikkei advanced 0.73 per cent and Korea's Kospi gained 0.41 per cent. Shanghai Composite Index dipped 0.04 per cent.

In Europe, Frankfurt's DAX was up 0.63 per cent, Paris CAC 40 jumped 0.37 per cent and London's FTSE gained 0.30 per cent in early deals.

Oil benchmark Brent crude futures rose 1.07 per cent to USD 71.59 per barrel.

According to traders, investors followed cues from other Asian markets which were trading on a positive note US President Donald Trump on Friday said the United States and China are close to entering into a trade agreement and something very "monumental" could be announced in next four weeks.

Top Chinese and US officials are meeting in Washington to reach an agreement after the world's two biggest economies entered into a trade war and imposed tariffs on more than USD 360 billion in two-way trade.

Investors were cautious about the downward revision in GDP growth to 7.2 per cent for FY20 by the Reserve Bank of India, while premium valuation and concerns over monsoon further impacted the sentiment. However, dovish view by global central banks and likely better results in Q4FY19 can stabilise the market in the near future, experts said.

Domestic equity benchmarks opened on a cautious note Thursday ahead of the outcome of Reserve Bank of India's first bi-monthly monetary policy review for fiscal 2019-20.

The BSE gauge Sensex was trading a tad above the psychological 39,000-level in early deals, up 24.13 points or 0.06 per cent at 38,901.25. The 30-share index had settled 179.53 points, or 0.46 per cent lower, at 38,877.12 in the previous session.

Similarly, the NSE benchmark Nifty was trading 15.70 points, or 0.13 per cent, higher at 11,659.65 in early session.

Investors were cautious ahead of RBI's bi-monthly monetary policy review, scheduled to be announced before noon on Thursday.

The RBI's Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) is holding a three-day meeting between April 2-4 for the first policy statement for financial year 2019-20.

According to experts, RBI is expected to cut rates by 25 basis points and adopt a pro-growth stance. However, expectation of poor rainfall and already slow economic growth alongside subdued inflation may pressurise RBI to go for a higher rate cut.

Market sentiment was also subdued after foreign investors turned net sellers in the previous trading session, traders said.

Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) pulled out Rs 1,040.48 crore Wednesday, and domestic institutional investors (DIIs) sold equities to the tune of Rs 80.83 crore, provisional data available with stock exchanges showed.

Sensex rallies over 265 points in opening deals

The rupee appreciated by 15 paise to 69.15 against the US dollar in opening trade Friday, driven by sustained foreign fund inflows and higher opening in the domestic equity market.

At the Interbank Foreign Exchange (forex), the domestic unit opened strong at 69.20 then gained further momentum and was trading at 69.15, higher by 15 paise over its previous close.

On Thursday, the rupee slumped 42 paise to end at 69.30 against the US dollar.

Forex traders said, the weakening of the US dollar against some currencies overseas supported the local unit, however rising crude oil prices capped the gains.

The dollar index, which gauges the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies, was marginally up by 0.01 per cent at 97.21.

Brent crude futures, the global oil benchmark, was trading 0.55 per cent up at $68.19 per barrel.

Foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) bought equities worth a net Rs 3,594.51 crore Thursday, provisional data showed.

Shares of HCL Tech and Indiabulls Housing Finance gained nearly 3 per cent in the morning session while Yes Bank was up by 1.6 per cent.

Vedanta, Adani Ports, NBCC and Ultratech Cement also gained marginally. But Tata Motors, Bajaj Auto, ONGC, Dr Reddy Labs and Power Grid traded in the red.

Meanwhile, Asian shares declined as the dip in developed market sovereign bond yields continued to disappoint investors about the global economic outlook.

The 30-share index was trading 205.47 points, or 0.54 per cent, higher at 38,438.88. It had ended 424.50 points, or 1.12 per cent, higher in the previous session.

The broader Nifty also rose 53.45 points, or 0.47 per cent, to 11,536.70 in morning trade.

Top gainers include IndusInd Bank, SBI, Sun Pharma, Bharti Airtel, L&amp;T, Bajaj Finance, Axis Bank and Tata Motors, rising up to 3.62 per cent.

While, ONGC, NTPC, PowerGrid, Hero MotoCorp, Coal India, ICICI Bank and RIL were among the top laggards, shedding up to 1.10 per cent.

Sector-wise, BSE Capital Goods index was the biggest gainer, rising 0.70 per cent, followed by BSE Bankex, finance, FMCG, healthcare and auto indices gaining up to 0.54 per cent.

"Indian markets have been the recipient of robust foreign flows this entire March on the back of increased likelihood of strong political stability and policy continuity post elections and the softer stance adopted by global central banks," said Devang Mehta, Head Equity Advisory, Centrum Wealth Management.

Foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) bought shares worth a net of Rs 999.02 crore Tuesday, while domestic institutional investors (DIIs) sold shares worth Rs 196.70 crore, provisional data showed.

In the Asian region, Hong Kong's Hang Seng was up 0.49 per cent, Korea's Kospi was trading marginally higher, Shanghai Composite Index gained 0.55 per cent; while Japan's Nikkei fell 0.61 per cent.

Similarly, the NSE Nifty fell 103.90 points, or 0.78 per cent, to 11,353 after hitting a low of 11,342.90.

Brokers said, besides profit-booking in recent gainers, rupee's fall below the 69-mark against the dollar and weak cues from global markets weighed on investor sentiments.

Global cues turned weak tracking Friday's sell-off on the Wall Street after a weak manufacturing data from the US and Europe raised fears of an economic slowdown.

Bucking the trend, shares Coal India, Maruti Suzuki and Hero MotoCorp rose up to 0.84 per cent.

Continuing its upward journey for the eighth consecutive session, market benchmark BSE Sensex ended marginally higher Wednesday, following gains in Infosys, HDFC twins and L&amp;T amid uninterrupted capital inflows by foreign funds.

Gains were, however, capped tracking Asian shares that slipped from six-month highs after a lacklustre session as investors booked profits ahead of a policy decision by the US Federal Reserve, experts said.

The 30-share index began the session on a firm note at 38,433.86 and hit the session's high of 38,489.81 on steady inflow of buying by foreign funds as well as retail investors.

However, after emergence of profit-booking and losses in select heavyweight stocks, the index turned negative and hit a low of 38,316.21 before returning in positive terrain to close the day higher by 23.28 points, or 0.06 per cent, to 38,386.75.

The barometer had rallied about 1,500 points in the previous seven sessions.

The broader NSE Nifty, however, ended 11.35 points, or 0.10 per cent, lower at 11,521.05 after shuttling between 11,556.10 and 11,503.10 during the session on expiry of March series derivative contracts.

The allegation came amid heightened tension between India and Pakistan after the February 14 suicide attack by Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammad terror group that killed 40 CRPF soldiers in Jammu and Kashmir's Pulwama district.&nbsp;

The 30-share index was trading 119.01 points, or 0.33 per cent, higher at 36,375.70.

Similarly, the 50-share NSE Nifty rose 34.15, or 0.32 per cent, to 10,865.10.

On Thursday, the 30-share Sensex rallied 665.44 points, or 1.87 per cent, to close at 36,256.69; and the broader Nifty soared 179.15 points, or 1.68 per cent, to 10,830.95..

Top gainers in the Sensex pack include Hero MotoCorp, HCL Tech, Bharti Airtel, Bajaj Finance, Infosys, HDFC, HUL, M&amp;M, L&amp;T, ITC and Maruti, rising up to 2.91 per cent.

Vedanta was the biggest loser on Sensex, cracking over 18 per cent after the metals and mining giant Thursday reported a 25.54 per cent decline in consolidated net profit at Rs 1,574 crore for the December 2018 quarter, on the back of higher expenses and drop in commodity prices.

Other losers include PowerGrid, ONGC, Axis Bank, Kotak Bank and Sun Pharma, shedding up to 1.14 per cent.

It is a classic macroeconomic theory to expect the government to come forward with fiscal stimulus during times of economic weakness, said Sunil Sharma, Chief Investment Officer, Sanctum Wealth Management.

A looming election and aggressive opposition only adds to the pressure to deliver a meaningful relief package, he said; adding that, should the Budget disappoint, investors' attention is likely to revert to concerns centered around slowing growth and elections.&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Meanwhile, on a net basis, foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) bought shares worth a net of Rs 3,006.41 crore Thursday, and domestic institutional investors (DIIs) were net sellers to the tune of Rs 1,634.32 crore, provisional data available with BSE showed.

Domestic market, however, will continue to be volatile ahead of the interim budget which will be announced on Friday, traders said.

Elsewhere in Asia, Shanghai Composite Index jumped 0.77 per cent, Kospi gained 0.22 per cent, and Japan's Nikkei was up 0.24 per cent; while, Hong Kong's Hang Seng slipped 0.21 per cent in early trade.

Sensex cracks over 368 points; banking, auto stocks drag

The rupee on Friday weakened by 16 paise to close at 71.19 against the US dollar amid rise in demand for the greenback from exporters and unabated increase in global crude oil prices.

This is the second successive week of loss for the Indian currency. During the week the domestic unit registered a loss of 27 paise. In the previous week, the local unit had slumped by 81 paise.

Forex traders said foreign fund outflows, gain in domestic equity market and stronger dollar against its key rival currencies impacted the rupee trading pattern.

At the Interbank Foreign Exchange (forex) market, the rupee opened lower at 71.12 and fell further to touch the day's low of 71.24.

The domestic currency, however, pared some losses and finally ended at 71.19 per dollar, down by 16 paise against its previous close.

On Thursday, the rupee had settled 21 paise higher at 71.03 against the US dollar.

"Along with rupee, the benchmark government bonds also dropped, as fiscal worries have continued to weigh on markets with Finance Minister Arun Jaitley hinting of a possible 'people friendly' budget ahead of general election," said V K Sharma, Head PCG &amp; Capital Markets Strategy, HDFC Securities.

However, a lower opening of the domestic equity markets capped the rise, dealers said.

At the Interbank Foreign Exchange, the rupee opened on a strong note at 69.79 a dollar against the previous close of 70.14. Further, the domestic unit surrendered early gains to quote at 69.95, showing a gain of 19 paise.

Financial markets were closed on Tuesday on account of Christmas.

&nbsp;After gyrating nearly 700 points Wednesday, benchmark equity indices reversed initial losses and ended higher driven by a rebound in banking stocks amid a firming trend in the US market.

The BSE Sensex broke its three-day falling streak by ending 179.79 points, or 0.51 per cent, higher at 35,649.94. It fell to a low of 35,010.82 during afternoon trade.

The broader NSE Nifty too recovered to reclaim the 10,700 level, rising 66.35 points, or 0.62 per cent, to 10,729.85.

"Market recovered in the second half following a recovery in Dow futures. At current levels, Nifty 50 is on track to deliver nominal positive returns in CY18. Nifty is the only index among large markets that is positive for the calendar year," said Viral Berawala, CIO of Essel Mutual Fund.

The 30-share index had ended the previous session 271.92 points lower at 35,470.15, while the Nifty had lost 90.50 points.

The biggest gainers on both bourses were Bharti Airtel, HDFC duo, L&amp;T, Bajaj Auto, Kotak Bank, Reliance Industries, Axis Bank, ICICI Bank, SBI, ITC and Bajaj Finance, rising up to 4 per cent.

On the other hand, Sun Pharma, Yes Bank, TCS, NTPC, Tata Motors, Infosys and ONGC fell up to 2 per cent.

Sensex rebounds 180 points, Nifty reclaims 10,700 mark

The rupee Monday recovered by 4 paise to close at 70.14 against the US currency, aided by weak crude oil prices and the dollar's losses in global markets due to political uncertainty in the US.

Crude oil prices remained below the $55 per barrel mark, strengthening the rupee sentiment, a forex dealer said.

The dollar was weak against major currencies in global markets which supported the local currency, the dealer said.

The dollar index, which measures the US currency's strength against a basket of six major global currencies, was down at 96.27 amid growth worries and political uncertainty in the US due to the shutdown.

The rupee opened strong by 8 paise against the US dollar at 70.10 in early trade on dollar selling by exporters and banks.

It gained 30 paise to touch a day's high of 69.88 per dollar in late morning trade as the dollar remained weak in global markets.

The domestic currency, however, trimmed its early gains due to month-end dollar demand and losses in equity markets in the last hour of the trade.

Foreign investors pulled out Rs 577 crore from capital markets Monday, provisional exchange data showed.

The rupee finally ended up by 4 paise or 0.06 per cent at 70.14 per dollar.

The 30-share index dropped 140.51 points, or 0.40 per cent, to 36,129.56 points in opening trade. The gauge had rallied over 1,310 points in the previous five sessions, news agency PTI reported.&nbsp;

The NSE Nifty too fell 47.50 points, or 0.44 per cent, to 10,840.85.

Brokers said, the decline in benchmark indices was on account of a weak trend in Asian markets amid sharp losses at the Wall Street, as investors continued to fear the weakening of global growth. Besides, profit-booking in recent gainers also dampened investor sentiment here.
