Meanwhile, drugmakers Dr Reddy's Laboratories Ltd and Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd fell some 5% each and were the top decliners on the NSE index on Wednesday. Dr Reddy's said US regulators did not approve its female contraceptive, while Sun Pharmaceutical dropped even as it reported a double-digit rise in June-quarter profits.

The news raised investor fears of a revival of trade hostilities between Washington and Beijing, and sent MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan to its lowest level since mid-June.

In India, the broader NSE Nifty fell 1.17% at 10,853.90 as of 10am, while the benchmark BSE Sensex was 1.08% down at 36,629.77.

The volatility index rose as much as 10.1% to its highest level since June 3.

"Markets continue to be on the weaker side due to negative global cues and absence of any positive domestic news," said Gaurav Arora, head-Asia Pacific &amp; Middle East, Greenwich Associates.

Metals and autos were among the biggest drags on the markets. The Nifty metals index fell 1.3% after copper prices slumped to fresh lows following Trump's comments.

Vedanta Ltd shares traded lower by 2.5% tracking the fall in copper prices, while Hindalco was down 2.1%.

Meanwhile, auto investors remained bearish on the sector following a continued fall in monthly sales by major automakers. The Nifty auto index fell nearly 1%.

Sector heavyweights were trading in the red. Eicher Motors fell as much as 2.6% and Hero Motocorp was down 2.9%, while Bajaj Auto was down 1.6%.

Equity benchmark indices were lower again during early hours on Thursday tracking global cues as both US and Asian markets fell on less-than-expected dovish remarks from the US Fed Reserve.

At 10:15 am, the BSE S&amp;P Sensex was down 239 points at 37,243 while the Nifty 50 slipped 44 points to 11,042.

At the National Stock Exchange, all sectoral indices were in the red with Nifty metal down by 1.5 per cent and pharma by 1.2 per cent.

Among stocks, Coffee Day Enterprises plunged another 10 per cent for the third day in a row and traded at Rs 110.95 per share, a day after Cafe Coffee Day founder V G Siddhartha`s body was found near the Netravathi river in Mangaluru.

UPL was down by 5.4 per cent, Hindalco by 3.3 per cent, Vedanta by 3.2 per cent, JSW Steel by 2.1 per cent and HDFC by 1.9 per cent.

However, Wipro gained by 3.5 per cent and Bharti Infratel by 2.3 per cent.

Power Grid, IndusInd Bank and GAIL showed marginal gains.

Among stocks, Bharat Petroleum Corporation edged 3.2 per cent lower while Vedanta was down 2 per cent. Eicher Motors, JSW Steel and Britannia were down by over 1.6 per cent each.

However, HDFC gained 1.6 per cent while Yes Bank moved up by 1.5 per cent. The other gainers were Larsen &amp; Toubro and Hindustan Lever.

Meanwhile, most stocks rose in Asia after reports that the United States and China will resume trade talks next week with US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer travelling to Shanghai.

Among stocks, Bajaj Finance dropped 4.89 per cent to Rs 3,298 per share while Bajaj Finserve slipped 3.88 per cent to Rs 7,543 per share. Mahindra &amp; Mahindra was down 2.5 per cent, Tata Motors by 2.4 per cent, Eicher Motors by 2.2 per cent and Hero MotoCorp by 2.1 per cent.

Among the other losers were GAIL, IndusInd Bank, Tech Mahindra and UPL.

A day earlier, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) should consider the option of structuring themselves as companies rather than trusts to avoid paying the increased surcharge announced in Union Budget for 2019-20.

FPIs registered as trusts will have to pay the new tax surcharge, Sitharaman said, quashing hopes that the government may tweak relevant portions of the Finance Bill to protect them from the effects of `super-rich tax.`

Reports say foreign investors have pulled out more than Rs 5,000 crore from the cash segment of Indian equity markets so far in July.

On the other hand, Yes Bank, Tata Motors, Hero MotoCorp, IndusInd Bank, M&amp;M, Bharti Airtel and Bajaj Auto fell up to 5.54 per cent.

The domestic market opened on a positive note following upbeat Asian bourses on hopes that the US Fed might cut rates in the near future, said Narendra Solanki, Head-Fundamental Research (Investment Services) - AVP Equity Research, Anand Rathi Shares and Stock Brokers.

Further, reports of US-China trade talks next week also gave a shot in the arm to global markets, he added.

However, the markets trimmed most of their gains and came off the day's highs led by selling in PSU banks, auto and pharma and IT sectors.

"The markets also failed to draw any sense of relief with the Reserve Bank of India's statement that it will infuse Rs 12,500 crore of liquidity into the system through purchase of government bonds to ease prevailing liquidity conditions," Solanki said.

Elsewhere in Asia, Hang Seng rallied 2.56 per cent, Shanghai Composite Index jumped 0.96 per cent, Nikkei soared 1.72 per cent and Kospi gained 1.24 per cent.

Stock exchanges in Europe were trading on a mixed note in early deals.

On the currency front, the Indian rupee was flat at 69.70 against the US dollar intra-day.

Brent crude futures, the global oil benchmark, fell 0.55 per cent to $61.80 per barrel.

Forex dealers said the local currency gained strength ahead of the Reserve Bank of India's monetary policy meet. The Monetary Policy Committee (MPC), which decides on key interest rates, will hold a meeting on June 3, 4 and 6.

The rupee opened strong at 69.48 at the interbank forex market then gained further ground and touched 69.39 amid a positive opening in domestic equities, displaying gains of 31 paise over its last close.

The rupee Friday had settled at 69.70 to the US dollar.

Meanwhile, the 10-year government bond yield was at 6.95 per cent on Monday, against the previous close of 7.03 per cent on Friday.

Forex traders said foreign fund inflows also supported the domestic currency.

Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) remained net buyers in the capital markets, putting in Rs 676.15 crore on a net basis Friday, provisional exchange data showed.

Brent crude futures, the global oil benchmark, eased 1.13 per cent to USD 61.29 per barrel.

Bucking the negative market trend, ITC, TCS, Bharti Airtel and ONGC ended in the green.

According to traders, domestic market turned jittery after Trump's surprise move spooked global investors.

In a tweet on Sunday, Trump said he would raise import taxes on USD 200 billion in Chinese products to 25 per cent from 10 per cent on Friday.

Despite Trump's announcement, China's top trade envoy is preparing to travel to the US to resume talks on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, foreign institutional investors (FIIs) sold equity worth Rs 400.68 crore on Friday, while domestic institutional investors (DIIs) purchased shares to the tune of Rs 57.07 crore, provisional data available with stock exchanges showed.

The 30-share index was trading 107.81 points, or 0.28 per cent, higher at 39,089.24. Similarly, the NSE Nifty up 22.45 points, or 0.91 per cent, at 11,747.20.

In the previous session, the BSE bourse settled 50.12 points, or 0.13 per cent, lower at 38,981.43; and the broader Nifty slipped 23.40 points, or 0.20 per cent, to close at 11,724.75.

Top gainers in the early session were Tata Motors, Bharti Airtel, Maruti, PowerGrid, ICICI Bank, ONGC, HDFC, Coal India, Asian Paints, M&amp;M, SBI, NTPC, Kotak Bank and RIL, rising up to 2.46 per cent.

On the other hand, HCL Tech, TCS, Infosys, HUL, Tata Steel, Vedanta, IndusInd Bank and Yes Bank were the top losers, shedding up to 2.45 per cent. 
According to traders, recovery in auto and banking stocks led to the rise in key indices. Unabated foreign fund inflow and easing crude oil prices too lifted investor mood.

Brent crude futures, the global oil benchmark, were trading 0.40 per cent lower at $70.47 per barrel.

Equity benchmarks ended on a negative note after a volatile session Thursday as investor sentiment remained on the back foot amid lacklustre macroeconomic data and mixed overseas cues.

Auto stocks skidded following weak April sales numbers, while IT counters tumbled as the rupee strengthened above the 70 per dollar mark.

The BSE Sensex settled 50.12 points, or 0.13 per cent, lower at 38,981.43. During the day, the index swung over 300 points, hitting an intra-day low of 38,882.99 and a high of 39,189.95.

In similar movement, the broader NSE Nifty slipped 23.40 points, or 0.20 per cent, to close at 11,724.75. It also saw an intra-day movement of 89.75 points.

Globally, stock markets struggled after the US Federal Reserve decided to keep its benchmark interest rate unchanged amid mixed signals about the direction of the American economy.

Meanwhile, India's manufacturing sector performance eased to an eight-month low in April as new business growth moderated, curbed by the elections and a challenging economic environment, PMI data showed.

In the Sensex pack, Tata Motors was the biggest loser, shedding 3.29 per cent, followed by ICICI Bank, IndusInd Bank, Infosys, HCL Tech, Axis Bank, TCS, HUL, Asian Paints, Sun Pharma, SBI, Tata Steel and NTPC, which dropped up to 3.23 per cent.

On the other hand, Yes Bank was the top gainer, rebounding 3.45 per cent.&nbsp;

PowerGrid, HDFC, HDFC Bank, Hero MotoCorp, Bajaj Auto, Bharti Airtel, Bajaj Finance, Kotak Bank, RIL, L&amp;T, Vedanta, ITC, ONGC and Maruti too ended in the green, rising up to 1.88 per cent.

"As we enter the final stages of the 2019 general elections, one can expect the volatility in the market to remain high. Q4 FY19 earnings so far have been lacklustre, slowdown in sectors such as consumption and auto has hurt investor sentiments.

"Rising oil prices continue to be a threat to the domestic markets. However, due to the ongoing general elections the government has kept domestic oil prices stable and has not undertaken any steep hikes," said Hemang Jani, Head - Advisory, Sharekhan by BNP Paribas.

Sectorally, BSE IT, teck, consumer durables, bankex and auto indices ended in the red, falling up to 1.84 per cent.

The broader BSE Midcap and Smallcap gauges closed in line with the benchmarks, shedding up to 0.61 per cent.

Elsewhere in Asia, Korea's Kospi and Hong Kong's Hang Seng ended in the green, while other major bourses in China and Japan were shut.
