The 30-share Sensex settled 453.46 points, or 1.27 per cent, higher at 36,170.41, while the broader NSE Nifty jumped 129.85 points, or 1.21 per cent, to finish at 10,858.70.

The rupee jumped 74 paise to breach the 70 per dollar mark and touched 69.88 -- a three-month high -- in intra-day trade amid sustained selling of the greenback by exporters and easing crude oil prices.

"With a significantly lower Brent and a stronger rupee, the equity market traded with absolute buoyancy, covering the broader markets as well," said Joseph Thomas, Head Research, Emkay Wealth Management.

According to him, one key factor which has breathed new life into the markets is the statement from the Fed Chairman that US interest rates remain just below neutral.

"This was seen as a signal that the Fed is probably close to the end of the tightening cycle. Notably, this statement was in sharp contrast to the earlier statement around the last FOMC meeting that there was still a 'long way' for the Fed to tread before the right levels are attained," he added.

Any ease in global trade tension after G20 meet this weekend will further boost global sentiment, analysts said.

Top gainers of the session included Bajaj Auto, Kotak Bank, M&amp;M, Vedanta, IndusInd Bank, Asian Paints, HDFC Bank, Reliance Industries, HUL, HDFC, ITC, Tata Steel and Tata Motors, rallying up to 5 per cent.

However, ONCG, PowerGrid, NTPC, Infosys, Yes Bank and Sun Pharma fell up to 1.33 per cent.

On a net basis, foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) bought shares worth Rs 961.26 crore Wednesday, while domestic institutional investors (DIIs) sold shares to the tune of Rs 330.29 crore, provisional data with stock exchanges showed.

Elsewhere in Asia, Korea's Kospi rose 0.28 per cent, Japan's Nikkei gained 0.39 per cent, while Hong Kong's Hang Seng fell 0.87 per cent and Shanghai Composite Index slipped 1.32 per cent.

The index finally settled 2.50 points, or 0.01 per cent down at 35,141.99. It had rallied 332 points on Tuesday.

Similarly, the broader NSE Nifty, after shuttling between 10,651.60 and 10.532.70 points on alternate bouts of buying and selling, closed 6.20 points, or 0.06 per cent, down at 10,576.30.

The rupee appreciated 31 paise to 73.14 against the dollar at the interbank foreign exchange Friday after crude prices fell to seven-month lows in the global market amid fresh foreign fund inflows.

The rise was also supported by dollar-selling by exporters and banks and the US unit's weakness against some currencies overseas, traders said.

They said a higher opening in the domestic equity market too supported the rupee.

Brent crude, the international benchmark, dropped 3.48 per cent to trade at a seven-month low of $ 72.65 per barrel on higher supply from world's major producers.

The rupee had gained 50 paise to close at 73.45 against the US dollar Thursday, posting its biggest single-session spurt in three weeks on increased selling of the greenback by exporters, softening crude oil prices and upbeat economic numbers.

Foreign institutional investors (FIIs), which had been selling on Indian bourses, made fresh purchases worth Rs 348.75 crore Thursday, as per provisional data.

Meanwhile, the benchmark BSE Sensex rose 271.38 points, 0.81 per cent, to trade at 34,703.35 in early trade.

Most Asian markets skidded to multi-month lows and European shares opened sharply lower on worries over corporate earnings and global growth.

Disappointing quarterly earnings from Maruti Suzuki, Yes Bank and a few others accelerated the selling momentum, brokers said.

The Sensex moved in the range of 33,776.80 and 33,298.43 before settling down by 340.31 points, or 1.01 per cent, at 33,349.31. This is its lowest closing since April 5 when it had finished at 33,596.80.

The broader NSE Nifty ended 94.90 points, or 0.94 per cent down at 10,030 after shuttling between 10,128.85 and 10,004.55. This is its weakest closing since March 26, when the gauge had ended at 10,130.65 points.

The BSE Sensex erased all its early gains to end lower by 175 points in see-saw trade Tuesday, posting its fourth fall in five sessions due to widespread selling in auto, consumer, realty, oil and gas and banking stocks amid worries over weakening rupee and boiling crude oil prices.

Market sentiments were further dampened on unabated foreign fund outflows and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) downgrading outlook for world economy to 3.7 growth on Tuesday.

The Indian currency collapsed to a new lifetime low of 74.27 in intra-day trade, raising concerns on the macroeconomic front.

A mixed trend at other Asian markets and a lower opening in the eurozone too triggered selling on the domestic bourses here.

The 30-share Sensex opened higher at 34,651.82 points but slipped into the negative zone to hit a low of 34,233.50 before concluding at 34,299.47, recording a fall of 174.91 points, or 0.51 per cent.

Similarly, the NSE Nifty after shuttling between 10,397.60 and 10,279.35 points, ended 47 points, or 0.45 per cent, lower at 10,301.05.

Selling was more pronounced in consumer durables, auto, oil and gas, FMCG, realty, PSU and banking stocks that dragged the indices into the negative zone.

Among Sensex constituents, Tata Motors was the worst hit, plunging 13.40 per cent to end at multi-year low of Rs 184.25, after the company-owned Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) reported 12.3 per cent decline in global sales in September.

Other laggards include Asian Paints falling 3.95 per cent, Maruti Suzuki 3.07 per cent, HUL 2.73 per cent, Bharti Airtel 2.29 per cent, Bajaj Auto 1.85 per cent, ITC 1.81 per cent, RIL 1.58 per cent, ICICI Bank 1.50 per cent, M&amp;M 1.36 per cent, SBI 1.26 per cent, NTPC 1.22 per cent, Axis Bank 0.67 per cent and HDFC Bank 0.17 per cent.

In contrast, Adani Ports emerged as the top gainer by rising 4.52 per cent, followed by HDFC falling 2.59 per cent.

Shares of oil marketing companies such as HPCL, BPCL and IOC were down up to 4.20 per cent as global crude oil prices again rose on reports of decline in crude export from Iran.

Sectorally, the BSE consumer durables index emerged worst performer by falling 3.91 per cent, followed by auto at 2.62 per cent, oil and gas 1.92 per cent, FMCG 1.68 per cent, PSU 1.19 per cent, realty 1.06 per cent, power 0.62 per cent, bankex 0.47 per cent, infrastructure 0.41 per cent, capital goods 0.25 per cent.

However, metal, healthcare, teck and IT indices managed to close in the positive zone by rising up to 1.01 per cent.

Nifty, Sensex at lowest close since April

In a rare move, the RBI and Sebi Sunday said they are "closely monitoring" activities in the financial markets and ready to take appropriate actions, if required, following a sharp meltdown on Friday in equity and debt markets.

The regulators came out with separate but identical statements amid apprehensions about steep volatility in markets on Monday.

Against the backdrop of debt defaults by diversified IL&amp;FS group, there are also worries about non-banking financial companies even though the country's largest lender SBI assured lending support to the NBFC sector.

In a statement, SBI Chairman Rajnish Kumar said there was no concern on liquidity of NBFCs in view of their liquid cash position and availability of committed lines.

"The Reserve Bank of India and the Securities and Exchange Board of India are closely monitoring recent developments in financial markets and are ready to take appropriate actions, if necessary," said the regulators.

Sebi has also sought details from stock exchanges about large trades done on Friday and would be stepping up the vigil to prevent steep volatility, sources said.

On Friday the 30-share BSE Sensex suddenly tanked 1,127.58 points, or 3.03 per cent, to hit a low of 35,993.64 in afternoon trade before staging an equally sharp recovery within minutes.

The markets had opened on a strong note. After an intra-day swing of 1,495.60 points, the Sensex closed at 36,841.60, down 279.62 points.

The broader NSE Nifty shed 91.25 points to finish at 11,143.10 on Friday.

Meanwhile, some reports also suggested that some scrupulous elements are trying to destabilise markets to malign the image of the government.

Shares of housing finance firms slumped Friday, with DHFL tumbling up to 42 per cent on fears of a liquidity crisis.

Reports of debt defaults by IL&amp;FS also sparked concerns, which spilled over into other NBFC counters.

Yes Bank was the worst performer in the Sensex pack, losing a whopping 28.71 per cent, after the RBI curtailed the term of its founding CEO Rana Kapoor.

The Indian currency has also witnessed a massive plunge in the recent past due to rising trade and current account deficits in the wake of rising crude oil prices.

However, the rupee was bullish on Friday for the second day, rising 17 paise to end at 72.20 against the US dollar.

On Friday, market regulator Sebi had issued revised KYC norms for foreign portfolio investors, wherein resident as well as non-resident Indians have been permitted to hold non-controlling stake in such entities.

Overseas investors have pulled out a massive Rs 15,365 crore (USD 2.1 billion) from the capital markets so far in September, after putting in funds during the previous two months.

Earlier in the day, DHFL Sunday said it proposes to reduce exposure to commercial paper (CP) as part of overall borrowing plan and increase hedging activity, days after the shares of the company tumbled up to 42 per cent on massive selling over fears of a liquidity crisis.

Besides, the company said it will raise resources and focus on borrowings from banks and international markets and through direct assignment, said a DHFL note on 'approach to liquidity management' filed with stock exchanges.

The BSE benchmark Sensex opened higher at 34,983.59 and hovered in a range of 35,259.81 to 34,977.74 before finishing at 35,208.14, showing a gain of 292.76 points or 0.84 per cent.&nbsp

This is its highest closing since February 1, 2018, when it had finished at 35,906.66.

The gauge had lost 261.04 points in the previous two sessions.

The NSE 50-share Nifty also gained 97.25 points, or 0.92 per cent, to 10,715.50 after shuttling between 10,725.65 and 10,635.65.

Meanwhile, domestic institutional investors bought shares worth a net Rs 1,084.09 crore, while foreign portfolio investors sold shares worth Rs 1,628.23 crore on Friday, provisional data showed.

Asian markets ended mixed despite a strong closing on Wall Street as investors digested last week's trade talks between the US and China, while US jobs data eased fears of faster rate hike by the Federal Reserve.

However, US crude topped the USD 75 mark for the first time since 2014. Crude oil prices rose by 0.75 per cent to USD 75.43 a barrel.&nbsp

Sensex turns negative on weak Asian cues, profit-booking

The benchmark BSE Sensex started on a negative note, shedding over 100 points today, on weak global cues and rupee depreciation against the US dollar.

Asian shares fell across the board, following an overnight drop in US stocks. Rising US bond yields and crude oil prices too worried investors.

Market sentiment also turned cautious ahead of April derivatives expiry due tomorrow.

The 30-share index dropped 105.53 points, or 0.30 per cent, to 34,511.11. The gauge had gained 201.06 points in the previous two sessions.

Similarly, the NSE Nifty fell below the 10,600 mark, shedding 25.85 points, or 0.24 per cent, to 10,588.50.

Major losers were NTPC, Dr Reddy's, ONGC, Tata Steel, Asian Paint and Sun Pharma, falling up to 1.29 per cent.

Sectoral indices led by power, banking, capital goods, realty, IT, PSU and metal stocks were trading in the negative zone, falling up to 0.82 per cent.

On the other hand, Bharti Airtel was the biggest Sensex gainer, rising nearly 3 per cent.&nbsp;

The company, along with Idea Cellular and Vodafone Group, today announced an agreement for the merger of Indus Towers and Bharti Infratel to create the largest mobile tower operator in the world outside China with over 163,000 towers across 22 telecom service areas.&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Airtel, however, reported its lowest quarterly net profit in at least 14 years yesterday.

Brokers said sentiment turned weak on sustained capital outflows by foreign funds amid a weak trend in other Asian markets following overnight weakness at Wall Street after the 10-year treasury yield briefly touched the 3 per cent level for the first time in four years.

Meanwhile, on a net basis, foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) sold shares worth Rs 680.99 crore, while domestic institutional investors (DIIs) bought shares worth Rs 508.55 crore yesterday, provisional data showed.

In the Asian region, Japan's Nikkei fell 0.65 per cent, Hong Kong's Hang Seng shed 1.07 per cent in early trade. China's Shanghai Composite index too was down 0.59 per cent.

The NSE Nifty was up 42.70 points, or 0.40 per cent, at 10,568.90 in early trade.

Investors sentiment was optimistic ahead of quarterly earnings of some key companies, including IT major TCS which is scheduled to release its results later in the day.

TCS rose 0.43 per cent to Rs 3,173.05 and IndusInd Bank gained 0.69 per cent to Rs 1,857.45 ahead of earnings.

Gainers that supported the upmove were ONGC, Tata Steel, Adani Ports, ITC, Dr Reddy's, Asian Paints, L&T, Yes Bank and Reliance Industries, rising up to 2.15 per cent.

Brokers said buying by investors coupled with a firm trend in other Asian markets influenced sentiment here. 
Besides, encouraging earnings posted by ACC and MindTree too supported the uptrend.

ACC rose 1.83 per cent to Rs 1,602 and MindTree gained 3.26 per cent to Rs 894.50.

However, stocks of oil marketing companies such as HPCL, BPCL and IOC faced selling pressure in view of rising global oil prices. HPCL fell 3.78 per cent, BPCL 3.54 per cent, and IOC shed 2.15 per cent.&nbsp

Among other Asian markets, Japan's Nikkei was up 0.62 per cent and Hong Kong's Hang Seng rose 1.34 per cent in the early deals. Shanghai Composite Index too gained 0.86 per cent.

Markets ended marginally lower on Wednesday&nbspafter nine consecutive sessions of gains owing to a fag-end rush among investors to unwind bets amid sustained foreign fund outflows.

The 30-share BSE Sensex shed 63 points to end at 34,331.68, while the broader NSE Nifty finished 22.50 points lower at 10,526.20.

Participants were eager to take money off the table after the recent rally -- the markets' longest winning streak in over three years -- even as the wider sentiment remains positive, underpinned by upbeat macro cues and forecast of a normal monsoon, brokers said.&nbsp

The BSE Sensex, after resuming higher at 34,443.42, advanced to hit a high of 34,591.81 on buying by domestic institutional investors (DIIs) as well as retail participants.&nbsp

However, investors preferred to lock in gains towards the close of the session, with the benchmark finally ending at 34,331.68, down 63.38 points, or 0.18 per cent.

The gauge had risen 1,375.99 points, or 4.17 per cent in the previous nine sessions.

Likewise, the 50-stock NSE barometer Nifty finished 22.50 points, or 0.21 per cent, down at 10,526.20 after hitting the day's high of 10,594.20 and a low of 10,509.70.

It had gained 420.30 points, or 4.15 per cent in the past nine sessions.

Investor sentiment got a boost after the IMF yesterday said India is expected to grow at 7.4 per cent in 2018 and 7.8 per cent in 2019, leaving its nearest rival China behind.&nbsp

Meanwhile, foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) sold shares worth a net Rs 951.39 crore, while domestic institutional investors (DIIs) bought equities to the tune of Rs 723.81 crore yesterday, as per provisional data.

"Market took a breather after consecutive days of rally as weakening rupee and surge in yield influenced investors to book profit. Global cues remain positive supported by earnings and ease in trade tensions.&nbsp

"Back home, bank index underperformed due to RBI's tightening of NPA norms while market remain in a positive territory due to better earnings and monsoon expectation," said Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Financial Services.

Sensex components which finished in the red were Axis Bank (2.60 per cent), M&M (1.55 per cent), IndusInd Bank (1.23 per cent), Hero MotoCorp (0.97 per cent), Coal India (0.89 per cent), Power Grid (0.81 per cent), SBI (0.79 per cent), RIL (0.71 per cent), Asian Paints (0.65 per cent), Kotak Bank (0.61 per cent), ICICI Bank (0.51 per cent), HDFC Ltd (0.42 per cent), Tata Motors (0.42 per cent), HDFC Bank (0.39 per cent), Maruti Suzuki (0.39 per cent), Bajaj Auto (0.28 per cent), Dr Reddy's (0.25 per cent), Sun Pharma (0.22 per cent) and TCS (0.20 per cent).

On the other hand, ITC emerged as the top gainer by surging 2.82 per cent, followed by Wipro at 2.40 per cent.&nbsp

Other winners were Bharti Airtel, up 1.29 per cent, Tata Steel 0.95 per cent, Adani Ports 0.81 per cent, NTPC 0.65 per cent and ONGC 0.55 per cent, cushioning the fall.

Sectorally, BSE consumer durables fell the most at 1.18 per cent, followed by bankex 0.85 per cent, oil and gas 0.65 per cent, PSU 0.57 per cent, healthcare 0.47 per cent, auto 0.47 per cent, IT 0.21 per cent and capital goods 0.13 per cent.

While FMCG rose 1.57 per cent, realty 0.49 per cent, metal 0.46 per cent, power 0.17 per cent, infrastructure 0.03 and teck 0.03 per cent.

The broader markets too succumbed to profit-booking, with the small-cap index falling 0.37 per cent and mid-cap index shedding 0.07 per cent.

Coming to global markets, most of other Asian markets ended higher and European shares were up in their early deals, tracking overnight gains at the Wall Street on strong earnings and outlook.

Japan's Nikkei surged 1.42 per cent, Hong Kong's Hang Seng gained 0.74 per cent and Shanghai Composite Index rose 0.80 per cent.

European shares were in better shape as investors monitored a fresh batch of corporate earnings and economic data. Frankfurt's DAX was up 0.34 per cent, while Paris CAC 40 rose 0.50 per cent. London's FTSE gained 0.89 per cent.&nbsp

The 30-share Sensex was trading higher by 130.31 points, or 0.38 per cent, at 33,918.85, with all the sectoral indices rising up to 1.80 per cent.

The gauge had gained 774.47 points in the previous three sessions.

The NSE Nifty breached the 10,400-mark, up 38.80 points, or 0.37 per cent, at 10,418.15.

Meanwhile, domestic institutional investors (DIIs) bought shares worth Rs 359.35 crore yesterday, while foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) remained sellers and offloaded shares worth Rs 1,300.93 crore as per provisional data.

A firm trend in other Asian markets after Chinese President Xi Jinping eased worries over a simmering US trade conflict by promising new measures to open his country's massive economy "wider and wider" boosted investor sentiment here, brokers said.

The rupee's appreciation against the dollar and widening of bets by investors amid optimism ahead of earnings season also supported the uptrend, they said.

Rainfall during the monsoon season is expected to be 100 per cent of the long-term average, a private weather forecasting agency said earlier in the day, raising prospects of higher farm and economic growth in the $2 trillion economy.

The broader NSE Nifty was up 0.18 per cent at 10,263.35 as of 0541 GMT, while the benchmark BSE Sensex was 0.25 per cent higher at 33,452.45.

"There is a shift in the market towards quality growth and a shift to domestic consumption-focused sectors, particularly autos. Consumer-facing banking and private banking are also driving the move," said Sunil Sharma, chief investment officer at Sanctum Wealth Management.

The Nifty auto index rose as much as 2 per cent and was set to post a third consecutive session of gains.

Tata Motors climbed as much as 5.8 per cent after Morgan Stanley said sales of Land Rovers in the United States grew 38 per cent in March.

Eicher Motors Ltd rose as much as 3.8 per cent on a higher production forecast for Royal Enfield motorcycles in the current fiscal year.

Private lenders also rose, with the Nifty private bank index climbing as much as 0.7 per cent, ahead of a decision on monetary policy by India`s central bank. Yes Bank Ltd was up over 2 per cent.

The BSE Sensex slumped 206 points in see-saw trade today to close below the 33,000-mark on the last trading session of 2017-18 but finished the fiscal with a gain of 11.30 per cent.

Besides weak global cues, squaring-up of bets by investors due to end of March month expiry in the derivatives segment halted its two-session winning run, brokers said.

On the macro front, official data showed India's fiscal deficit soared to Rs 7.15 lakh crore at the end of February, exceeding the revised target for the full fiscal.

The broader 50-share index Nifty also ended 70 points lower at 10,113.70.

The flagship Sensex has gained 3,348.18 points, or 11.30 per cent, during 2017-18. The index had gained 16.88 per cent in the previous fiscal.

Investors saw a wealth addition of Rs 20.70 lakh crore during fiscal 2017-18. The market capitalisation of all the firms listed on the BSE reached Rs 142.24 lakh crore, from Rs 121.54 lakh crore as on March 31, 2017.

The broader Nifty closed the fiscal with gains of 939.95 points, or 10.25 per cent. During the previous fiscal, it scored gains of 1,435.55 points, or 18.55 per cent.

For the day, the BSE Sensex snapped its two-session winning streak to end lower by 205.71 points, or 0.62 per cent at 32,968.68. It hovered between 33,104.11 and 32,917.66 during the session.

The gauge had rallied 577.85 points in the past two sessions.

The NSE Nifty too ended the day 70.45 points, or 0.69 per cent lower at 10,113.70 after shuttling between 10,158.35 and 10,096.90.

On a weekly basis, the Sensex rose 372.14 points, or 1.14 per cent, while the Nifty gained 115.65 points, or 1.16 per cent. This was their first gain in five weeks.

Stock exchanges will remain closed on Thursday and Friday on account of 'Mahavir Jayanti' and 'Good Friday', respectively.

"Market slid on the expiry day due to volatility in global market and last leg of redemption ahead of introduction of LTCG. We expect domestic volatility to normalise as declining yield and inflation may provide room for RBI to extend their neutral stance, against rate hike expectation.

"Result season will be next major trigger as earnings growth remain in the initial stage of recovery while investors are focused on the possibility of further upgrade," said Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Financial Services.

Meanwhile, foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) bought shares worth a net Rs 1,063.12, while the domestic institutional investors (DIIs) made purchases to the tune of Rs 2,172.91 crore yesterday, as per provisional data.

Tata Steel was the day's worst performer in the Sensex pack, plunging 3.25 per cent, followed by Bharti Airtel at 3.05 per cent.

Other losers were Adani Ports, Sun Pharma, Bajaj Auto, ICICI Bank, RIL, Infosys, SBI, Power Grid, Tata Motors, ITC Ltd, ONGC, Dr Reddy's, NTPC, Axis Bank, Asian Paints and HDFC Bank, shedding up to 2.93 per cent.

In contrast, Wipro rose 3.27 per cent, Coal India 2.94 per cent, Hero MotoCorp 2.30 per cent, Kotak Bank 0.55 per cent, Yes Bank 0.49 per cent, IndusInd Bank 0.43 per cent, L&T 0.39 per cent, HDFC Ltd 0.28 per cent, TCS 0.26 per cent, Hindustan Unilever 0.26 per cent and Maruti Suzuki 0.11 per cent.

Sector-wise, BSE telecom fell 2.58 per cent, metal 2.04 per cent, healthcare 1.14 per cent, realty 1.07 per cent, power 1.05 per cent, infrastructure 0.99 per cent, teck 0.67 per cent, banking 0.65 per cent, PSU 0.50 per cent, FMCG 0.37 per cent and IT 0.31 per cent.

However, consumer durables rose 0.24 per cent and oil and gas 0.06 per cent.

The broader market sentiment too remained bearish, with the small-cap and mid-cap indices falling 0.92 per cent and 0.53 per cent, respectively.

Overseas, Asian markets closed lower after a sharp fall on Wall Street, driven by technology stocks.

Hong Kong ended 2.50 per cent down, Japan's Nikkei shed 1.34 per cent, while China's Shanghai Composite Index lost 1.40 per cent.

European stocks too were down in their initial deals. Paris's CAC declined by 1.33 per cent, Frankfurt's DAX fell 1.43 per cent and London's FTSE shed 0.98 per cent.&nbsp

The broader Nifty closed the fiscal with gains of 939.95 points, or 10.25 per cent. During the previous fiscal, it scored gains of 1,435.55 points, or 18.55 per cent. For the day, the BSE Sensex snapped its two-session winning streak to end lower by 205.71 points, or 0.62 per cent at 32,968.68. It hovered between 33,104.11 and 32,917.66 during the session. The gauge had rallied 577.85 points in the past two sessions. The NSE Nifty too ended the day 70.45 points, or 0.69 per cent lower at 10,113.70 after shuttling between 10,158.35 and 10,096.90. On a weekly basis, the Sensex rose 372.14 points, or 1.14 per cent, while the Nifty gained 115.65 points, or 1.16 per cent. This was their first gain in five weeks. Stock exchanges will remain closed on Thursday and Friday on account of 'Mahavir Jayanti' and 'Good Friday', respectively. "Market slid on the expiry day due to volatility in global market and last leg of redemption ahead of introduction of LTCG. We expect domestic volatility to normalise as declining yield and inflation may provide room for RBI to extend their neutral stance, against rate hike expectation. "Result season will be next major trigger as earnings growth remain in the initial stage of recovery while investors are focused on the possibility of further upgrade," said Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Financial Services. Meanwhile, foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) bought shares worth a net Rs 1,063.12, while the domestic institutional investors (DIIs) made purchases to the tune of Rs 2,172.91 crore yesterday, as per provisional data. Tata Steel was the day's worst performer in the Sensex pack, plunging 3.25 per cent, followed by Bharti Airtel at 3.05 per cent. Other losers were Adani Ports, Sun Pharma, Bajaj Auto, ICICI Bank, RIL, Infosys, SBI, Power Grid, Tata Motors, ITC Ltd, ONGC, Dr Reddy's, NTPC, Axis Bank, Asian Paints and HDFC Bank, shedding up to 2.93 per cent. In contrast, Wipro rose 3.27 per cent, Coal India 2.94 per cent, Hero MotoCorp 2.30 per cent, Kotak Bank 0.55 per cent, Yes Bank 0.49 per cent, IndusInd Bank 0.43 per cent, L&T 0.39 per cent, HDFC Ltd 0.28 per cent, TCS 0.26 per cent, Hindustan Unilever 0.26 per cent and Maruti Suzuki 0.11 per cent. Sector-wise, BSE telecom fell 2.58 per cent, metal 2.04 per cent, healthcare 1.14 per cent, realty 1.07 per cent, power 1.05 per cent, infrastructure 0.99 per cent, teck 0.67 per cent, banking 0.65 per cent, PSU 0.50 per cent, FMCG 0.37 per cent and IT 0.31 per cent. However, consumer durables rose 0.24 per cent and oil and gas 0.06 per cent. The broader market sentiment too remained bearish, with the small-cap and mid-cap indices falling 0.92 per cent and 0.53 per cent, respectively. Overseas, Asian markets closed lower after a sharp fall on Wall Street, driven by technology stocks. Hong Kong ended 2.50 per cent down, Japan's Nikkei shed 1.34 per cent, while China's Shanghai Composite Index lost 1.40 per cent. European stocks too were down in their initial deals. Paris's CAC declined by 1.33 per cent, Frankfurt's DAX fell 1.43 per cent and London's FTSE shed 0.98 per cent.

A weak trend in other Asian markets, following overnight losses Wall Street, dampened market sentiment here, brokers said.

The 30-share barometer fell 112.26 points, or 0.34 per cent, to 32,810.86 in opening session.

The gauge, however, turned positive to trade 42.34 points, or 0.13 per cent, higher at 32,965.46. It had lost 994.82 in the previous five sessions.

The NSE Nifty also opened 45.15 points, or 0.44 per cent, lower at 10,049.10.

Sectoral indices led by metal, healthcare, realty, consumer durable and banking stocks were trading in the negative terrain, falling by up to 1.38 per cent.

The laggards were Bharti Airtel, NTPC, Kotak Bank, M&amp;M, IndusInd Bank, Axis Bank, Sun Pharma and ITC, falling up to 1.42 per cent.

Tata Steel, Adani Ports, Tata Motors and Infosys were among the top gainers, rising up to 3 per cent.

Meanwhile, on a net basis, domestic institutional investors (DIIs) sold shares worth Rs 191.52 crore, while foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) bought shares worth Rs 292.23 crore on yesterday, provisional data released by the stock exchanges showed.

In the Asian region, Hong Kong&#39;s Hang Seng fell 0.72 per cent, Japan&#39;s Nikkei shed 0.09 per cent, while Shanghai Composite Index down 0.26 per cent in their early deals.
