The BSE Sensex extended gains for the second straight day by rising about 139 points in opening trade on sustained buying by domestic institutional investors amid a firm trend at other Asian bourses.

The 30-share barometer, which had gained 318.48 points in the previous session, was trading higher by 138.52 points, or 0.41 per cent, at 33,490.09. Sectoral indices led by Metal, IT, Teck, Consumer Durables and FMCG led the gains, rising by up to 0.64 per cent.

On similar lines, the NSE Nifty was up by 35.35 points, or 0.34 per cent, at 10,278 points.

Traders said sentiment remained upbeat on increased buying by domestic institutional investors and a firm trend at other Asian markets, extending gains on Wall Street following signs from the White House that US President Donald Trump&#39;s tariffs may be softer than initially feared.

Major gainers that supported the upmove were Bajaj Auto, Bharti Airtel, Asian Paints, Tata Steel, Adani Ports, Hero MotoCorp, HDFC, ITC and Dr Reddy&#39;s, rising by up to 1.03 per cent.

However, Gitanjali Gems remained under selling pressure and traded 4.82 per cent lower at Rs 15.80.

Domestic institutional investors bought shares worth a net Rs 675.26 crore, while foreign portfolio investors sold shares worth a net Rs 364.80 crore yesterday, provisional data showed.

Yesterday, the local currency had lost by 8 paise to end at 64.87 against the American unit on sustained dollar demand from importers and banks amid heavy capital outflows.

Short-covering of bets, today being the last session of January expiry in the derivatives segment, kept the overall sentiment positive.

The 30-share index spurted by 85.38 points or 0.23 per cent at 36,247.02.

The gauge had gained 1,390.53 points in the previous six record-setting sessions and closed at an all-time high of 36,161.64 points after scaling a new peak of 36,268.19 in yesterday&#39;s session.

Metal, capital goods, oil and gas, Infrastructure, power and auto sector stocks were leading the rally, which lifted sentiments.

The NSE Nifty was also trading higher by 9.60 points, or 0.08 per cent, at 11,095.60.

Brokers said that the market mood remained buoyant, bolstered by continued capital inflows by foreign institutional investors (FIIs) and domestic investors.

According to provisional exchange data, FIIs put in a net Rs 776.4 crore in stocks yesterday.

The BSE Sensex sank about 250 points to end at 36,033.73, while the broader NSE Nifty dropped 80 points to 11,049.65.

Brokers said investors took money off the table and held back fresh bets ahead of the Union Budget on February 1.

Market sentiment was also impacted as other Asian markets retreated from record highs, tracking overnight meltdown at the Wall Street after a sell-off in Apple shares.

Investors were also cautious ahead of the US Federal Reserve&#39;s two-day monetary policy meeting beginning today.

The 30-share Sensex, after opening a shade lower at 36,277.12, continued its slide to crack the 36,000-mark and hit a low of 35,993.41 during the day. It finally settled at 36,033.73, down 249.52 points, or 0.69 per cent.

The index had gained 232.81 points yesterday and closed at a record high of 36,283.25.

The Nifty too closed lower by 80.75 points, or 0.73 per cent, at 11,049.65 after hitting a low of 11,033.90.

It had ended at a lifetime high of 11,130.40 yesterday.

Sensex, Nifty tumble from record highs ahead of Budget

India&#39;s broader NSE Nifty breached the 10,900 mark for the first time on Friday, with financial stocks leading the gains, as investors remained bullish after the government decided to cut tax rates on certain products and services.

The NSE index closed up 0.72 percent at 10,894.70 and posted a weekly gain of 2 percent.

The benchmark BSE Sensex ended 0.71 percent higher at 35,511.58, and rose 2.67 percent this week.

Both indexes posted their seventh consecutive weekly gain and hit record closing highs for the third time this week.

Both indexes posted their seventh consecutive weekly gain and hit record closing highs for the third time this week.

Nifty crosses 10,900 level for first time

Benchmark Sensex soared over 310 points today to close above the 35,000-mark for the first time ever, while the broader Nifty too ended at a fresh life-time high on unabated buying by participants.

The 30-share Sensex jumped 310.77 points, or 0.89 per cent, to end at a new peak of 35,081.82, breaking its previous record of 34,843.51 reached on January 15.

Intra-day, it climbed to 35,118.61, bettering its previous intra-day high of 34,963.69 reached on January 15.

The benchmark Sensex staged a strong come back in early trade today gaining over 158 points on widespread buying by participants in banking, auto, pharma and oil and gas stocks.

Asian stocks notched moderate gains, tracking sizable increases seen on Wall Street overnight also boosted the sentiments.

The 30-share index was trading higher by 158.35 points, or 0.46 per cent at 33,970.61.

All the sectoral indices led by metal, consumer durables, power, bank and infrastructure were trading in the green with gains up to 0.79 per cent.

The 30-share Sensex had lost 244.57 points in the previous two sessions.

Also, the NSE Nifty went up by 43.30 points or 0.41 per cent to 10.485.50.

Major gainers were ICICI Bank, Reliance industries, SBI, Adani Ports, TCS, Tata Steel and Power Grid, rising up to 1.84 per cent.

Brokers said buying by domestic institutional investors (DIIs) and foreign funds amid a firm trend at other Asian bourses following yet another record close on Wall Street improved the market sentiment.

In the Asian region, Hong Kong&#39;s Hang Seng was up 0.23 per cent and Shanghai Composite Index by 0.82 per cent in early trade. Japan&#39;s Nikkei remained closed today.

The US Dow Jones Industrial Average ended 0.42 per cent higher yesterday.&nbsp;

The Sensex and NIfty closed at record highs on Tuesday after the BJP&#39;s wins in Gujarat and Himachal.&nbsp;

There were a number of reasons for the closing highs.

Risk appetite grew with the BJP&#39;s electoral wins.

The rupee climbing to an over three-month high against the dollar during the day came as a morale booster.

And while Asian shares were mixed, Europe opened higher after a record-setting session on Wall Street on bets that US lawmakers would pass a proposed tax cut.

India&#39;s largest car maker Maruti Suzuki was in top gear, with a maximum rise of 5.33 per cent. Other auto stocks were also in demand.

NTPC, ONGC, ICICI Bank, HUL and PowerGrid ended in the green.

On the sectoral front, barring the IT index, all others ended the day with gains.&nbsp;

The 50-share NSE Nifty too was quoting lower by 57.50 points, or 0.55 per cent, at 10,303.80.

Weakness in the rupee, which slipped 24 paise to 64.55 against the dollar today, too weighed on the sentiments.

Among laggards Kotak Bank, Cipla, Adani Ports, ONGC, M&amp;M, Reliance Industries, Coal India, Axis Bank, Hind Unilever, Tata Motors, Bharti Airtel, HDFC Ltd, Tata Steel and Lupin dropped up to 1.71 per cent.

Hong Kong&#39;s Hang Seng weakened 1.21 per cent while Shanghai Composite lost 0.26 per cent in early trade. Japan&#39;s Nikkei too shed 0.10 per cent.

Expectations that the GST (goods and services tax) Council might give some relief to some sectors by slashing the indirect tax rates at its meeting which begins today also supported the rebound, brokers said.

The 30-share barometer, which had lost 512.38 points in the previous two straight sessions, was trading higher by 244.99 points, or 0.73 per cent, to 33,463.80, with all the sectoral indices led by oil &amp; gas, realty, PSU and metal trading in green.

On similar lines, the NSE Nifty rose 65.30 points, or 0.63 per cent, to 10,368.45.

Major gainers were Hindustan Unilever, Tata Steel, SBI, Sun Pharma, Reliance Industries, ONGC, NTPC, Dr Reddy&#39;s, Asian Paint, Axis Bank, ICICI Bank, Wipro, Infosys and Bharti Airtel, posting gains of up to 2.14 per cent.

Tata Motors also rose 1.82 per cent ahead of its Q2 earnings to be announced later in the day.

Among other Asian markets, Hong Kong&#39;s Hang Seng was up 0.96 per cent, while Japan&#39;s Nikkei rose 1.98 per cent in early trade. China&#39;s Shanghai Composite Index was up 0.05 per cent.

The US Dow Jones Industrial Average ended 0.03 per cent higher in yesterday&#39;s trade.

Sensex at record high, bank shares soar on recapitalisation plan

Indian shares nudged up on Thursday, after having ended lower in the previous session, with Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd jumping to an over-two-month high after the US health regulator closed the inspection of the drug-maker&#39;s Dadra plant. 
 
However, gains were muted ahead of key corporate results including that of Tata Consultancy Services Ltd which will report later in the day. The stock was trading up 1.2 per cent. 
 
&quot;Market has been witnessing a broad-based consolidation mode for a few months now which will continue for a while. This earnings season is critical as the first quarter was disappointing and hopes are now pinned to see a recovery in the second quarter,&quot; said Rakesh Tarway, head of research at Reliance Securities. 
 
Meanwhile, India&#39;s inflation data for September will be released later in the day. Consumer inflation is forecast to have risen to 3.60 per cent in the month, above August&#39;s 3.36 per cent, according to a Reuters poll. 
 
The broader NSE Nifty was up 0.45 per cent at 10,029.5 as of 0539 GMT, while the benchmark BSE Sensex was 0.41 per cent higher at 31,966.22. 
 
Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd rose as much as 3.6 per cent to its highest since July 31. The stock led gains on both indexes and was also the top percentage gainer on the Nifty Pharma index, which was up 1 per cent.&nbsp;

Consumer inflation is forecast to have risen to 3.60 per cent in the month, above August's 3.36 per cent, according to a Reuters poll. The broader NSE Nifty was up 0.45 per cent at 10,029.5 as of 0539 GMT, while the benchmark BSE Sensex was 0.41 per cent higher at 31,966.22. Sensex scales 30k, Nifty closes at record high

The rupee today tumbled by 30 paise to end at a fresh 2016 low of 68.76 due to deteriorating sentiment in the midst of worsening impact of fund outflows.

Frantic dollar demand from corporates along with aggressive hedging strategy adopted by importers in the wake of currency volatility predominately took a toll on domestic unit despite moves by the central bank to stabilise the currency.

Massive funds outflows in the wake of impending US Fed rate hike and a bullish dollar overseas have hit the rupee sentiment, a forex dealer commented.

Ongoing redemption pressure on foreign currency non-resident (FCNR) deposits also aided to the rupee woes, the dealer said further.

At the Interbank Foreign Exchange (forex) market, the local unit opened modestly higher at 68.42 from last Friday&#39;s closing value of 68.46.

However, the initial positive momentum failed to gain ground with the currency retreating sharply to hit a intraday low of 68.80 before ending at 68.76 - its lowest closing level so far this year - showing a steep loss of 30 paise, 0.44 per cent.

The rupee has shed 3.95 per cent of its value since the beginning of 2016.

The rupee had plunged to a record low of 68.8650 in day trade last Thursday before recovering on RBI intervention to settle at 68.74 -- the lowest level in 39 months.

It had closed at a record low of 68.80 on August 28, 2013 impacted by the so-called taper tantrum after the Fed&#39;s signal to end its unprecedented bond purchases.

Foreign investors have pulled out close to USD 5 billion from the capital markets in November so far amid concerns over the impact of demonetisation coupled with fears of rate hike by the US Federal Reserve.

In worldwide trade, the greenback fell back modestly against all its major rivals at the beginning of the week after its longest winning streak in three years.

The dollar has strengthened nearly 6 per cent so far this month after the US presidential election outcome as markets speculated buoyant fiscal stimulus to boost economy that will boost inflation and aggressive Fed rate hike cycle.

The US dollar index was quoted higher at 101.51 in late afternoon.

Meanwhile, RBI today fixed the reference rate for the dollar at 68.7235 and euro at 73.1768.&nbsp;

In cross-currency trades, the rupee firmed up further against the pound sterling to settle at 85.26 from 85.28 in previous close. But it fell back against the euro to finish at 72.92 as compared to 72.53 previously. It also drifted down against the Japanese yen to conclude at 61.22 from 60.66 per 100 yens earlier.

Country&#39;s foreign exchange reserves fell sharply by USD 1.542 billion to USD 365.499 billion in the week to November 18.

The outflows on account of selling by foreign investors and hedge funds remained unabated for the fourth straight week with USD 737.49 million of outflows from equities and debt markets.

In the forward market, premium for dollar edged up further due to sustained paying pressure from corporates.

The benchmark six-month premium for April rose to 103-105 paise from 99-103 paise and the far-forward October 2017 contract also firmed up to 251-253 paise from 248-252 paise from 230-233 last weekend.

Meanwhile, the BSE Sensex rose nearly 34 points to close at 26,350.17, while the broder Nifty added 12.60 pts to 8,126.90.&nbsp;
