<p>At least six people were killed and more than 20 were injured in a building fire in an Indian city Mumbai on Saturday (January 22), an official of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) informed.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The incident happened at dawn when a major blaze engulfed the 18th floor of a building in Tardeo, South Mumbai. The densely populated city is in the western state of the country, Maharashtra.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Emergency services were alerted by people in neighbouring buildings when they noticed the fire at the top part of the 20-storied Kamla Building at around 7.30am (local time).&nbsp;</p>

<p>News agencies reported that the Mumbai Fire Brigade (MFB) rushed with 13 fire tenders as the flames quickly spread to the two upper floors sparking panic among the building residents.</p>

<p>The MFB managed to rescue at least 23 injured persons from the inferno that raged in the top three floors, and the firemen continued to battle the blaze in the afternoon.</p>

<p>As per reports, the injured persons were rushed to various private and public hospitals and seven were given first aid and allowed to go. The remaining 16 with grievous burns of various degrees, have been admitted to different hospitals.&nbsp;</p>

<p>BMC Disaster Control said that four critically injured people succumbed to their burns after two deaths were reported earlier. They also informed that another five are still critical. &nbsp;</p>

<p>President of the country&nbsp;Ram Nath Kovind condoled the deaths as he said, "Saddened to learn about the fire incident in a building in Mumbai. My deepest condolences to the families who lost their loved ones in this unfortunate accident. I wish the injured a speedy recovery."</p>

<p>Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the incident and announced on Twitter that ex-gratia assistance of Rs 2 lakh would be provided to the family members of each deceased from the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund (PMNRF), and the injured would be given Rs 50,000 each.</p>

<p>"I am always keen to incorporate new ways into my teaching, and the virtual teacher does exactly that. Students are learning questioning skills and researching to come up with new questions. This is also an attempt to improve their English language skills," she told WION.</p>

<p>Sankhe got the idea of creating this teacher after using Amazon's voice assistant Alexa. She merged the voice interface with a mannequin to give education a scientific touch.&nbsp;</p>

<p>She adds, "other government&nbsp;schools in the city have also got in touch with me to create their virtual teacher. Each virtual assistant comes at a cost of rupees ten thousand, which includes the Alexa device and externally sourced mannequin."</p>

<p>In 2018, Pooja Sankhe was honoured with the Best teacher award for her novel contribution to school education.</p>

<p>Civic schools in India offer subsidised education to all sections of society. They cater to a large number of students in modest set-ups. But one of the biggest problems they face is low attendance.</p>

<p>"A subway would help passenger flow better. We will request the BMC to&nbsp;build a subway in place of the collapsed FOB," a railway official said.</p>

<p>Meanwhile, a 40-metre stretch of the road median beneath the collapsed FOB has been removed so that people can cross DN Road and enter CSMT railway station.</p>

<p>The FOB, near the Times of India building, was used by people to enter the iconic railway station from the Crawford Market, JJ School of Arts, Anjuman-I-Islam School areas.</p>

<p>With the FOB now dismantled, they will have to use the subway further south near the BMC headquarters.</p>

<p>Sunil Udasi, CR chief public relation officer, said, "Our staffers are guiding commuters towards other entry and exit points available at CSMT."</p>

<p>The traffic restriction imposed on DN Road between CSMT and the start of JJ Flyover after the FOB collapse has now been lifted by police.</p>

<p>Mehta also ordered a departmental inquiry against former chief engineer (bridges) S O Kori and former deputy chief engineer R B Tare--both retired.</p>

<p>The inquiry report said these four officers were responsible for poor supervision of the structural audit in 2017-18.</p>

<p>Charges will be framed against the officers accordingly, the official added.</p>

<p>Mehta also ordered that an FIR is lodged against structural auditor Prof D D Desai's Associated Engineering Consultants &amp; Analysts Pvt Ltd for irresponsibly carrying out the structural audit "that led to the collapse of the bridge and loss of human lives".</p>

<p>He also directed that the auditor is removed from the empanelled list of structural auditors of the BMC with immediate effect.</p>

<p>"All payments pending to be made to this structural auditor be stopped and for any payments made earlier, due process of recovery be started," the order issued by Mehta said.</p>

<p>Mehta also asked the authorities to withdraw other ongoing works allotted to the firm with immediate effect and directed that prior auditing works done by the firm should again be audited through a different structural audit company.</p>

<p>The report submitted by the chief engineer (vigilance) mentioned that structural audit was not carried out correctly and major lapses were found.</p>

<p>"The audit was conducted in an irresponsible manner and the auditor did not raise any alarm for anticipated failure of structural members and not recommended any specific need for repairs," it said.</p>

Six persons were killed and 31 injured after a section of the foot overbridge near a busy train station in south Mumbai collapsed during evening rush hour on Thursday.

<p>The Bombay High Court&nbsp;rejected the bail on Friday plea of Yug Tuli, the co-owner of the Mojo's Bistro restaurant and an accused in the December 2017 fire incident at the Kamala Mills compound, in which 14 people were killed.</p>

<p>Justice Ajey Gadkari dismissed Tuli's bail application and said he would pass a detailed order later.</p>

<p>Tuli, who was arrested in mid-January, had approached the high court after his bail plea was rejected by the sessions court.</p>

<p>In his plea, Tuli had claimed that the tragedy occurred due to the "mistake" of the staff at "1 Above", the other restaurant that was gutted in the blaze on the intervening night of December 28-29.</p>

<p>His counsel Shirish Gupte argued that while as per the police inquiry, the fire did start at Mojo's Bistro, none of the guests at the restaurant was among the dead.</p>

<p>Prosecution lawyer Prakash Shetty, however, opposed the bail plea and said there was gross negligence on the part of Tuli and all the other accused.</p>

<p>Shetty told the court that as per the inquiry reports of the police as well as the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the fire was caused by the flying embers emanating from a hookah being served illegally at Mojo's Bistro.</p>

<p>Tuli claimed that he had no role in the day-to-day operations of the hookah parlour.</p>

<p>A total of 14 persons have been arrested in the case and booked under various sections of the IPC, including those related to culpable homicide not amounting to murder and causing death by negligence.</p>

<p>The accused include the owners of the Kamala Mills compound, Mojo Bistro and 1 Above and two BMC officials.</p>

<p>On that fateful night, a massive fire had swept through the two resto-pubs at the Kamala Mills compound in central Mumbai, resulting in the death of 14 people.</p>

<p>After the incident, Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis&nbsp;had assured to take action against errant civic officials and the owners of the pub. He had also ordered safety audit of all such structures in the city.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The police have booked a fire against the pub owners, also five&nbsp;officials of the BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) were suspended for running out the pub in an illegal space.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Shiv Sena-led Mumbai civic body ordered fire safety audits of all restaurants in the city.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Several illegal structures have been demolished at six places in Mumbai since morning.</p>

<p>As New Year is also approaching, all concerned departments have been directed by Municipal Commissioner Ajoy Mehta to form teams which should include fire staff to inspect all restaurants.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The teams have been directed to ensure that restaurants are fire compliant and all the fire escape routes, staircases, and open spaces should be encroachment-free.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As per media reports, the fire had broken out from the &#39;1 Above&#39; rooftop restaurant and later spread to the entire area, on the intervening night of Thursday and Friday.</p>

<p>Earlier, the police issued a lookout notice against all the accused in the case.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Airports across the country have also been put on high-alert and five teams of the Mumbai Police have been formed to search for the accused.<br />

<p>The Bombay high court issued a notice on Friday to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on the issue of open manholes in the city, asking it to reply within two weeks.&nbsp;</p>

<p>A public interest litigation had been filed against the BMC after the death of renowned Bombay Hospital gastroentologist Dr Deepak Amrapurkar.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Dr Amrapurkar had fallen into an open manhole and died on Tuesday in the rains that lashed the city.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The PIL had also asked the court to order the filing of an FIR under section 304(A) (causing death by negligence), to order the BMC to pay Rs 50 lakh from its coffers to any charitable organisation in Mumbai working for the welfare of the city, and to order authorities to fix accountability for Dr Amrapurkar&#39;s death -- all of which the court refused to do.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The court said they did not fall under the purview of a PIL, and that what was being demanded would have to be asked for by Dr Amrapurkar&#39;s family.</p>

<p>&quot;You can become emotional, I cannot,&quot; India Today reported Chief Justice Manjula Chellur as saying.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Dr Amarpurkar had left work on Tuesday in his car.&nbsp;</p>

<p>But he parked it after he came across waterlogged streets that he was unable to cross, and began to walk home.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Which is when he fell into the manhole.&nbsp;</p>

<p>His body was found only on Thursday in a drain in Worli.&nbsp;</p>

A public interest litigation had been filed against the BMC after the death of renowned Bombay Hospital gastroentologist Dr Deepak Amrapurkar. Dr Amrapurkar had fallen into an open manhole and died on Tuesday in the rains that lashed the city. The PIL had also asked the court to order the filing of an FIR under section 304(A) (causing death by negligence), to order the BMC to pay Rs 50 lakh from its coffers to any charitable organisation in Mumbai working for the welfare of the city, and to order authorities to fix accountability for Dr Amrapurkar's death -- all of which the court refused to do. The court said they did not fall under the purview of a PIL, and that what was being demanded would have to be asked for by Dr Amrapurkar's family. "You can become emotional, I cannot," India Today reported Chief Justice Manjula Chellur as saying. Dr Amarpurkar had left work on Tuesday in his car. But he parked it after he came across waterlogged streets that he was unable to cross, and began to walk home. Which is when he fell into the manhole. His body was found only on Thursday in a drain in Worli.
