A new study has found that obesity is likely to damage the ability of the brain to recognise the sensation of fullness of the stomach and to detect satisfaction after consuming sugars and fats.&nbsp;

The study emphasised the changes in the brain may last forever even after a significant amount of weight is lost by people who are considered medically obese, which further explained why a lot of people regain their weight after losing it.&nbsp;

“There was no sign of reversibility — the brains of people with obesity continued to lack the chemical responses that tell the body, ‘OK, you ate enough,’” stated Dr Caroline Apovian, who works as a professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School. He is also the co-director of the Centre for Weight Management and Wellness at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston.

“This study captures why obesity is a disease — there are actual changes to the brain,” stated Apovian, who was not part of the group that carried out the study.

“The study is very rigorous and quite comprehensive,” stated Dr I Sadaf Farooqi, who is a professor of metabolism and medicine at the University of Cambridge in the UK and was not involved in the new research.

“The way they’ve designed their study gives more confidence in the findings, adding to prior research that also found obesity causes some changes in the brain,” she added.&nbsp;

On Monday, Nature Metabolism published the study which was done based on a controlled clinical trial involving 30 people who are considered medically obese and 30 people who have normal weight. The group of people were fed sugar carbohydrates (glucose), fats (lipids) or water (as a control). On separate days, each group of nutrients were fed to people directly into the stomach through a feeding tube.

“We wanted to bypass the mouth and focus on the gut-brain connection, to see how nutrients affect the brain independently from seeing, smelling or tasting food,” stated lead study author Dr &nbsp;Mireille Serlie, professor of endocrinology at Yale School of Medicine in New Haven, Connecticut.

One night before the testing, the participants were given the same meal for dinner at home and they did not consume anything till the feeding tube was in place the next morning. &nbsp;When either fats or sugars entered the stomach through the tube, functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) were used by researchers to capture the response of the brains for over 30 minutes.

“The MRI shows where neurons in the brain are using oxygen in reaction to the nutrient — that part of the brain lights up,” stated Farooqi. “The other scan measures dopamine, a hormone that is part of the reward system, which is a signal for finding something pleasurable, rewarding and motivating and then wanting that thing," he added.&nbsp;

In people who had normal weight, the study found evidence of brain understanding that the body had been fed when either sugars or fats were put into the stomach. Also, the levels of dopamine rose in people with normal weight which signalled that the brain's reward centres were activated. However, in medically obese people, no evidence was found of brain understanding that food has been given to the body and there was no rise in dopamine levels.

Alexander Huth, a co-author of the study and an assistant professor of neuroscience and computer science at The University of Texas at Austin, said: "It's getting at the ideas behind the words, the semantics, the meaning."&nbsp;

In the study, published on May 1, it was mentioned that a system of a non-invasive decoder, which&nbsp;reconstructs continuous language from cortical semantic representations recorded using functional MRI, has been introduced.&nbsp;

"Given novel brain recordings, this decoder generates intelligible word sequences that recover the meaning of perceived speech, imagined speech and even silent videos, demonstrating that a single decoder can be applied to a range of tasks," part of the study mentioned.&nbsp;

The authors have also stated that they have tested the decoder across the cortex and found that continuous language can be separately decoded from multiple regions.&nbsp;

They added that we tested whether successful decoding requires subject cooperation and found that subject cooperation is required both to train and to apply the decoder — as brain–computer interfaces should respect mental privacy.&nbsp;

They said, "Our findings demonstrate the viability of non-invasive language brain–computer interfaces."&nbsp;

To derive the result, the researchers trained decoders for three subjects. They evaluated each subject’s decoder on separate, single-trial brain responses that were recorded while the subject listened to novel test stories that were not used for model training.&nbsp;

The researchers said that as their decoder represents language using semantic features rather than motor or auditory features, its predictions should capture the meaning of the stimuli.&nbsp;

Death is as much a subject of fear as it is of curiosity and scientific attention. The inevitability of it has long drawn human civilisation to wonder what exactly happens at the time of and possibly even after death. Advancements in technology have&nbsp;enabled us to track biological signatures in a better manner and glean more out of&nbsp;the unavoidable fate all living beings must eventually embrace.

Scientists have now found 'conscious-like' brain activity in the brains of dying patients. This finding is likely to give us more insight into the process of death.&nbsp;

The study has been published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, as reported by The Guardian.

“How vivid experience can emerge from a dysfunctional brain during the process of dying is a neuroscientific paradox,” said Jimo Borjigin, of the University of Michigan “We saw potential neuro-signatures of consciousness.” 
 
Borjigin, who led the study, was quoted by The Guardian.

The study analysed the data obtained from four patients who died in hospital while their brains were being monitored with the help of EEG machine. These patients had previously suffered seizures. All of them were in coma and were deemed to be beyond medical help.

Life support was withdrawn after their families consented.

The researchers focussed on the data from the time the life-support was removed and the patients died.

In their study, the researchers used mice that were engineered for nerve cells that could be easily identified in case of a fear response. They also used viruses that were able to sever specific nervous connections. These connections were important for memory consolidation.&nbsp;

An electric shock was used as a fearful event for the mice. It was found that when the mice returned to the same spot after one month, they froze, indicating that they were remembering the traumatic event (electric shock). Analysis of their brains showed strengthening connections in the area of the brain known as Prefrontal Cortex (PFC). Human brain has PFC as well. This area is involved in decision making and cognitive behaviour.

When the researchers severed the nervous connection to the PFC, it was found that the mice were no longer able to recall distant traumatic event but were able to form new connections in the PFC, where memories of fearful events were being stored.

The main purpose of grey matter, which is made up mostly of neuronal cell bodies, is to process information in the brain. Axons that make up the majority of white matter are used to conduct and deliver nerve impulses to different parts of the brain and spinal cord.

The Spanish men participated in brain scans before their partners were pregnant and then again a few months after their child's birth. American men participated in these scans during mid-to-late stages of their partners' pregnancies.

It was found that birth of their first child caused a percent or two of brain shrinkage. The shrinkage mainly took place in the area of the brain called 'default mode network'. This area is associated with parental acceptance and warmth.

Brain shrinkage may sound scary at first, but the study has found that it does not have any effect on cognitive capabilities. In fact, the changes in the brain make the man better prepared for fatherhood.

Scientists have found that the cancer-causing virus Epstein Barr Virus (EBV) can infect the neuronal cells and drive various changes in biomolecules such as fatty acids, carbohydrates, and protein components, leading to diseases of the central nervous system as well as brain cancer. EBV virus has been found to be widely present in the human population. It usually does not cause any harm, but the virus gets reactivated inside the body in some unusual conditions like immunological stress or immunocompetent, as reported by PIB.

This may further lead to various complications like a type of blood cancer called Burkitt’s lymphoma, stomach cancer, multiple sclerosis, and so on. Earlier studies provided links to EBV involvement in various neurodegenerative diseases. However, how this virus can affect the cells of the brain and manipulate them is still unexplored.&nbsp;

A research team from IIT Indore utilized the Raman microspectroscopy technique, supported by the Department of Science and Technology (DST) under the FIST scheme to explore the possible impacts of a cancer-causing virus on brain cells. The technique based on Raman Effect is a simple, cost-effective tool to find sensitive chemical changes in biological samples. The study, published in the journal ACS Chemical Neuroscience, showed that there could be timely and gradual changes in various biomolecules in the neuronal cells under the viral influence. Additionally, these changes were distinct when compared to the changes observed in other supportive brain cells (that is, astrocyte and microglia).

As reported by PIB, the team observed that the lipid, cholesterol, proline, and glucose molecules increased in the cells under the viral influence. These biomolecular entities could ultimately play pivotal roles in the viral usurpation of cells. Further, the study also provided insights into whether these biomolecular changes can be correlated to virus-associated impacts and linked to neurological complications. “The research work aids in the understanding of EBV-mediated biomolecular changes in the various compartments of the central nervous system leading to a better understanding of nervous system diseases,” said Dr Hem Chandra Jha.

Professor Rajesh Kumar pointed out that the study is also helpful in establishing the advantages of Raman microspectroscopy, a cost-effective and non-invasive technique, in carrying out studies on virus-associated cellular complications in clinical settings. It could provide an upper hand in analysing clinical samples in comparison to other techniques, which require advanced setups for studying the virus-associated changes in cells, tissues, and organs.

Scientists further discovered the evidence that antibodies, immune system proteins made in reaction to viruses and other intruders, damage the cells lining the blood arteries in the brain, causing inflammation and harm, reported by ANI.

These nine people, ranging in age from 24 to 73, were chosen because of blood vessel damage in their brains as per structural brain scans.

Avinda Nath, the author of paper and MD clinical director at NINDS said, "We had previously shown blood vessel damage and inflammation in patients'&nbsp;brains at autopsy, but we didn`t understand the cause of the damage. Researchers discovered more than 300 genes showed a decrease in expression, whereas 6 genes showed elevated expression when the endothelial cells were damaged. These genes are related to metabolism, DNA damage, and oxidative stress. These findings collectively shed light on the immunological reaction that causes brain damage after the COVID-19 infection.

The average temperature of a healthy human body is around 37 degrees Celsius. It was previously assumed that temperature of the brain would be similar to that of the body. But this study says otherwise.

Scientists from Cambridge University have found that average temperature of a healthy human brain is 38.5 degrees Celsius. Some of the inner regions of the brain were even measured to be at 40 degrees Celsius.

For their study, the scientists recruited 40 volunteers between the ages 20-40 years. Their brain temperatures were acquired by scans taken in morning, afternoon and late evening.

Things such as lifestyle, genetic differences were factored in. The volunteers were also given activity trackers to be worn on their wrists.

It was found that in healthy participants, the average temperature of the brain was 38.5 degrees Celsius. This was more than two degrees hotter than the temperature measured under the tongue. The study also found that the brain temperature varied through the day depending on

The average temperature of a healthy human body is around 37 degrees Celsius. It was previously assumed that temperature of the brain would be similar to that of the body. But this study says otherwise. Scientists from Cambridge University have found that average temperature of a healthy human brain is 38.5 degrees Celsius. Some of the inner regions of the brain were even measured to be at 40 degrees Celsius. Their brain temperatures were acquired by scans taken in morning, afternoon and late evening. Things such as lifestyle, genetic differences were factored in. The volunteers were also given activity trackers to be worn on their wrists. It was found that in healthy participants, the average temperature of the brain was 38.5 degrees Celsius. This was more than two degrees hotter than the temperature measured under the tongue. The study also found that the brain temperature varied through the day depending on Region of the brain time of day age sex and menstrual cycle It was also found that brains of female participants were 0.4 degrees Celcius hotter than male volunteers. To study almost any organ in the human body, there are both invasive and non-invasive techniques that doctors employ. But, when it comes to the human brain, studies aren't available in as much detail as doctors would require. It is to bridge this gap that experts from various domains have come together and established a 'Brain Centre' at the Indian Institute of Technology-Madras in Chennai. WION spoke to the key resource persons at this newly inaugurated centre, to understand their work and its applications. <o:p></o:p>

According to those working on this project, the work being performed at the 'Brain Centre', is an intersection of Neuroscience, Engineering, Medicine and advanced computing. It involves mapping the human brain (post mortem) in incredibly high resolution, at the cellular level. Simply put, it is like a mapping company taking billions of photographs of various places, streets, buildings, terrain on earth and combining them to make a digital world map.

When queried about the purpose of such research, Prof. K. Vijay Raghavan, Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India, explained to WION that scientific understanding of the human brain (in terms of diseases) has been largely gained by looking at it from the outside and by testing certain drugs. "To understand the human brain better, we need to look at it from inside" he added on how the new facility would perform anatomy at high-resolution. <o:p></o:p>

Approved in February 2020, the new facility at IIT Madras was brought to fruition amid the pandemic and is now at a fully functional level. Over the last eight months, the facility has performed high-resolution imagery on three human brains (from cadavers), while mapping is to be commenced shortly. Over the next one year, they are expected to perform imaging of ten human brains.

"High-resolution imaging of the brain is a complex procedure that requires the highest amount of technical precision, takes months of work and also consumes hundreds of thousands of gigabytes of storage space" said Prof. Mohanasankar Sivaprakasam, Department of Electrical Engineering, IIT Madras, and Head, Brain Centre.<o:p></o:p>

While imaging and mapping are half the battle, medical studies from the rest. "Rabies, Encephalitis, Parkinson's, Alzheimer's are all conditions that affect the brain. Unlike other organs, it is unusual to perform a biopsy (removal of tissue for analysis) on the brain. But, with a high-resolution digital reconstruction of the entire brain, we can identify how the diseases manifest and affect different regions, even at a cellular level" Dr. George Varghese, Professor, CMC Vellore told WION. <o:p></o:p>

At the intial level, the researchers have been working on imaging the brains of stillborns. Later, they will move to complex projects that involve brains from adult cadavers. As they progress, IIT Madras plans to train hundreds of undergraduate and postgraduate students at this Centre in neuroscience and computing, machine learning techniques on cutting-edge brain data.<o:p></o:p>

Inaugurated on Saturday, the 'Brain Centre' at IIT Madras is supported by Mr. Kris Gopalakrishnan and Mrs. Sudha Gopalakrishnan. Known as the Sudha Gopalakrishnan Brain Centre, it is named after the wife of IIT Madras Alumnus Kris Gopalakrishnan, who is the co-founder of Indian IT services giant Infosys. <o:p></o:p>

Map the human brain, unravel its mysteries- that's the mission of this Indian Lab

A new study has made a shocking revelation. Covid-19 severely impacts the body. However, a new study states that it may shrink the brain's gray matter, specifically in areas of the brain involved in smell and memory processing.&nbsp;

As a part of the study, researchers looked at brain alterations in 785 UK Biobank people aged 51-81 years. All these people had their brain scanned twice. Out of these, 401 cases tested positive for Covid between their two scans, with an average of 141 days between diagnosis and second scan.&nbsp;

The remaining 384 participants had no sign of Covid. However, they closely matched the infected participants in terms of age, sex and Covid risk factors.

These participants tested negative for SARS-CoV-2 antibodies.&nbsp;

All these participants had to also go through a second brain scan for the study.&nbsp;This was done so that the researchers could pinpoint how and where their brains differed.

The study has been published in the journal Nature.

Dr Serena Spudich, chief of neurological infections and global neurology at the Yale School of Medicine, in a report said, "To me, this is pretty convincing evidence that something changes in brains of this overall group of people with Covid."

She further added, “To make a conclusion that this has some long-term clinical implications for the patients I think is a stretch. We don’t want to scare the public and have them think, ‘Oh, this is proof that everyone’s going to have brain damage and not be able to function."
