A pup was born without her bum and the vets had to perform a life-saving surgery on her to give the pup a proper bottom in the United Kingdom.&nbsp;

The five-month-old Bulldog named Lucky had a rare congenital defect called Atresia ani type 3 which meant she did not have any anus.

Her owners saw how she was struggling and took the pup to the vet who then referred Lucky to specialists at Linnaeus-owned West Midlands Veterinary Referrals (WMR) near Burton-on-Trent, Staffs.

In the summer, the pup went through a complex operation to create a new bottom from scratch.

Dr Chris Lancelott, who headed the treatment of Lucky, said, "Lucky was, in fact, unluckily born with a congenital defect that meant she had no anus."

"It was a severe case of a condition we call an 'Atresia ani type 3 and rectovaginal fistula'. In layman's terms, I needed to create an anus, reposition the rectum and attach the bowel to this new anus," he added.&nbsp;

"The surgery is challenging in these cases as type 3 atresia means the closed bowel is far away from where the anus should be. First, we removed the fistula (abnormal internal passageway) and then carefully dissected the rectum to mobilise it," Dr Lancelott stated.

After the three-hour operation ended, a week was spent by Lucky in recovering.&nbsp;

Lucky has now come back to her home in Rugeley, where the pup continued her convalescence.

Speaking about the pup, her owner Frances Silk said, "We realised within the first week of Lucky being born that she wasn't 'plumbed' correctly and, as a result, she suffered from water infections and constipation."

"Our local vets suggested we try to get her to between eight and 12 weeks old when she might be big enough to undergo an operation. After a thorough investigation and detailed discussions, we decided to go ahead with the operation to correct her issues," she added.

"The operation went well and three months later, Lucky is slowly going from strength to strength. After months of being fed a liquid diet, she is now able to eat kibble just like her mum," Silk stated.&nbsp;

It was long believed that ectotherms— an animal that is dependent on external sources of body heat and has lower metabolism —age slowly than endotherms, which internally generate their own heat and have higher metabolisms.

However, in the new study, it was revealed that the metabolic rate was not the key factor as was previously thought.

According to the study, some of these species are even able to reduce their rate of senescence— the process of deterioration—in response to the improved living conditions in zoos and aquariums, compared to the wild.

This is the first time that the hatching of Caretta Caretta sea turtle eggs had been recorded along the northern Adriatic coast.

Nine sea turtles were born on Wednesday night on the beach in Jesolo, which is a popular seaside resort close to Venice.&nbsp;

Also, this is where their mother had deposited 82 eggs, about 25 metres from the sea, overnight on 9 July.

In order to protect the turtles, a protective barrier had been put up around the nest. There were also volunteers from animal rights groups who kept vigil day and night.

Diego Cattarossi, the scientific director of the Tropicarium zoological park in Jesolo, told the local newspaper, Il Mattino di Padova, "The instinctive walk towards the sea is fundamental for the species because it helps them to memorise where the beach is, allowing the females to return to lay their eggs where they were born."

There have been more than 1,800 migrants rescued by humanitarian ships, and Italy's navy and coastguard vessels over the past three days, and one body was recovered, an Italian coastguard official said.

Arrivals from Libya, a staging post for people smugglers, have plummeted 85 per cent this year from last as Italy provided support to the Libyan coastguard and to municipalities along the coast to stop migrant boats.

But good weather or other factors seem to have reversed that trend, for now.

"It's really hard to know what's happening inside Libya, or why the Libyan coastguard has not been so active in these last few days," said Lauren King, a spokeswoman from the Aquarius, the ship baby&nbsp;Miracle&nbsp;was born aboard.

The Aquarius is a rescue ship run by SOS Mediterranee and Doctors without Borders (MSF), which brought ashore 70 migrants in Catania, Sicily, on Sunday. The Aquarius is setting off again later in the day for the waters off the coast of Libya.

"Given the weather conditions ... It's better we're out there and ready," she said.

On Saturday, the leader of the far-right League party, which appears poised to form a coalition government with the anti-establishment 5-Star Movement, said that the surge in arrivals meant someone was trying to undermine the would-be administration.

"The usual powers that be are threatening us with the migrant boats," Matteo Salvini Tweeted.

The League has promised to take a hard line on irregular immigration and deport hundreds of thousands of migrants if the government receives the president's endorsement and wins parliament's backing.

Baby 'Miracle' born on rescue ship as Italy arrivals surge

The assailant who killed a 29-year-old man in a central Paris knife attack on Saturday night was born in 1997 in the Chechnya region of Russia, a judicial source said on Sunday.

The assailant shouted "Allahu akbar (God is greatest)," as he killed the passer-by and wounded four other people before being shot dead by police.

The father and mother of the attacker are being held for questioning by police, the source said.

The source did not say what the attacker's nationality was. BFM TV said he was Russian.

Earlier, Interior Minister Gerard Collomb told reporters the injured were out of danger.

"I have seen the person who was seriously injured and is now better," he said after visiting the victims in hospital.

France has been on high alert amid a series of attacks commissioned or inspired by the Islamic State militant group that have killed more than 240 people since 2015.

France "will not yield an inch to the enemies of freedom," President Emmanuel Macron said shortly after the attack, praising police officers for "neutralizing the terrorist".

Police union representative Rocco Contento told Reuters that the assailant, after attacking bystanders with a knife, rushed at police shouting "I will kill you, I will kill you!"

He was then shot by the officers.

The attack took place in the heart of the French capital, in a district popular with tourists for its many restaurants and cafes, landmark retail stores, and the Paris opera.

A picture seen by Reuters, which a source said showed the attacker, showed a bare-chested and bearded young man dressed in black trousers. A source told Reuters the attacker was not previously known to police.

Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack via its Amaq news agency, but provided no proof for its claim.

Authorities have not yet revealed the identity of the person killed in Saturday's attack, but the judicial source said he was a man aged 29.
