<p>In response to a written question on Friday in the British Parliament, Nigel Adams, minister of Asia in British foreign office said, "We are aware of concerns in India and here in the UK about how these reforms might affect farming communities", pointing out, "Agricultural reform is a domestic policy issue for the Indian authorities to address."</p>

<p>Asked about the British government's assessment of the protests by farmers on 26 January, the British minister said, "The right to gather lawfully and demonstrate a point of view is common to all democracies. <p>In a shocking development, several persons infected with coronavirus were accidentally mailed funeral services advertisement by health officials along with detailed instructions to be followed during self-quarantine at home in Osaka, Japan. &nbsp;</p>

<p>The hard to imagine incident took a heavy toll on the already troubled Covid-19 positive patients. “All my energy drained away,” says an Osaka resident, who received the message. &nbsp;</p>

<p>The recipients have also lodged complaints about the envelopes. &nbsp;</p>

<p>After the patients were initially briefed by the doctors, the information was mailed to the homes of the patients in a few days. The envelope also contained a large ad for funeral services on its backside. &nbsp;</p>

<p>The advertisement read, “Osaka Municipal Funeral Hall – For questions about funeral services, call Koekisha Co Ltd.” &nbsp;</p>

<p>The advertisement offered free consultation services to explain pricing and options to help patients get a complete image of what kind of funeral they can get. &nbsp;</p>

<p>The information would have been helpful in normal circumstances but sending it at a time when the receivers are battling a potentially deadly disease, it seems to be a little harsh, indicating death as an eventual possibility in the days to come. It seems to suggest it is an opportune time to make the arrangements for the funeral. It can also be seen as an advisory that following the instructions are a must to avoid the dreadful possibility. &nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>In 2006, Osaka had begun selling ad space on the back of its envelopes as part of a fundraising initiative. &nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to the spokesperson for the health office, this is an unfortunate coincidence that the envelopes distributed to the health offices had a funeral service company’s ad. There was no deliberate attempt to send funeral ads to coronavirus patients.</p>

<p>A fast-spreading coronavirus variant first observed in the United Kingdom has gained a new mutation that could potentially make it harder to control with vaccines, Public Health England reported Monday. It is the latest evidence that the virus is undergoing a worrisome evolution worldwide.</p>

<p>The variant, known as B.1.1.7, first came to light in December. Researchers determined that it had rapidly become more common across the United Kingdom in just a couple of months.</p>

<p>Experiments in test tubes suggest that some of its mutations allow the coronavirus to hold onto cells more tightly.</p>

<p>Since B.1.1.7’s discovery in the United Kingdom, the variant has been reported in 72 other countries. The United States confirmed its first case of B.1.1.7 on Dec. 29. Since then, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has recorded 467 samples of the variant in 32 states.</p>

<p>In its latest analysis, Public Health England estimated that the variant’s rate of infection is 25% to 40% higher than that of other forms of the coronavirus. Some preliminary evidence suggests that it may also cause more deaths.</p>

<p>Several lines of evidence suggest that vaccines will work against B.1.1.7. On Thursday, vaccine-maker Novavax announced that its British trial found no evidence that B.1.1.7 could evade the vaccine’s defenses.</p>

<p>But in South Africa, where a variant called B.1.351 has surged to dominance, the Novavax and Johnson &amp;amp; Johnson vaccines have both been less effective in trials.</p>

<p>That variant has been reported in 31 countries so far. In the United States, it has turned up in South Carolina and Maryland.</p>

<p>Whenever these variants infect a new host and multiply, there’s a small chance that they will gain yet another mutation. Most of the mutations are of little concern, but scientists have worried that by mutating, these already dangerous variants could evolve into more fearsome forms.</p>

<p>Even if a mutation alters a coronavirus variant, that’s no guarantee it will have the same effect in another variant. The effect of each new mutation depends on all the other mutations carried by the virus.</p>

<p>Public Health England said that the worrisome mutation known as E484K appears to have arisen more than once in the B.1.1.7 coronavirus variants in the United Kingdom. Two variants in Brazil have also been discovered to have independently gained the same mutation.</p>

<p>Moderna and other companies are already preparing by developing vaccines to work against the E484K mutation. Kristian Andersen, a virus expert at Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, California, said that while seeing the mutation known as E484K spread was not good, it was impossible to say yet whether it would make these coronaviruses not only more contagious but more resistant to vaccines. “We’ll have to wait for data,” he said.</p>

<p>Last week, scientists reviewed all the coronavirus genomes sequenced in the United Kingdom. They discovered 11 coronavirus variants that belong to the B.1.1.7 lineage that also carried the worrying mutation.</p>

<p>Exactly why the E484K mutation turns up so often remains a mystery. Nicholas Davies, a mathematical biologist at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, said it was possible that it enabled the coronavirus to evade antibodies created by previous infections from other variants. “E484K may well convey a fitness advantage in settings where there is existing immunity,” he said.</p>

<p>But he cautioned that the 11 variants out of over 200,000 samples were exceedingly rare, and it was possible that they might actually lose against other B.1.1.7 viruses without the mutation. “I think it’s potentially concerning, but hard to tell from the report what it means,” he said.</p>

UK PM Boris Johnson pledges to ramp up COVID vaccination rollout

<p>British Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Tuesday said that the United Kingdom is&nbsp;in "a race against time" to roll out COVID-19 vaccines as deaths hit record highs and hospitals ran out of oxygen, and his top medical adviser said the pandemic's worst weeks were imminent.</p>

<p>A new, more transmissible variant of the disease is now surging through the population, with one in 20 people in parts of London now infected, threatening to overwhelm the National Health Service (NHS) as hospitals fill up with patients.</p>

<p>In a bid to get on top of the pandemic and to try to restore some degree of normality by the spring, Britain is rushing out its largest ever vaccination programme, with shots to be offered to about 15 million people by the middle of next month.</p>

<p>"It's a race against time because we can all see the threat that our NHS faces, the pressure it's under, the demand in intensive care units, the pressure on ventilated beds, even the shortage of oxygen in some places,"&nbsp;Johnson&nbsp;said on a visit to a vaccination centre in Bristol, in southwest England.</p>

<p>"This is a very perilous moment. The worst thing now for us is to allow success in rolling out a vaccine programme to breed any kind of complacency about the state of the pandemic."</p>

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Tuesday said that the United Kingdom is in "a race against time" to roll out COVID-19 vaccines as deaths hit record highs and hospitals ran out of oxygen, and his top medical adviser said the pandemic's worst weeks were imminent.

"The next few weeks are going to be the worst weeks of this pandemic in terms of numbers into the NHS," Johnson said in an interview. A new, more transmissible variant of the disease is now surging through the population, with one in 20 people in parts of London now infected, threatening to overwhelm the National Health Service (NHS) as hospitals fill up with patients. The death toll in the United Kingdom has been soaring and now stands in excess of 81,000, the world's fifth-highest official toll, while more than three million people have tested positive. In a bid to get on top of the pandemic and to try to restore some degree of normality by the spring, Britain is rushing out its largest ever vaccination programme, with shots to be offered to about 15 million people by the middle of next month. Also read: UK steps up vaccinations as coronavirus cases surge, worst weeks still to come "It's a race against time because we can all see the threat that our NHS faces, the pressure it's under, the demand in intensive care units, the pressure on ventilated beds, even the shortage of oxygen in some places," Johnson said on a visit to a vaccination centre in Bristol, in southwest England. "This is a very perilous moment. The worst thing now for us is to allow success in rolling out a vaccine programme to breed any kind of complacency about the state of the pandemic." "Anybody who is not shocked by the number of people in the hospital who are seriously ill at the moment and who are dying over the course of this pandemic, I think, has not understood this at all. This is an appalling situation," he added. The government's chief medical adviser Chris Whitty earlier said the situation was set to deteriorate. Health minister Matt Hancock said there were now more than 32,000 COVID-19 patients in hospital, far more than the roughly 18,000 hospitalised during the peak of the first wave of the pandemic in April. Actress Jessie Cave who played Lavender Brown in 'Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince', has revealed that her two-month-old baby boy has tested positive for coronavirus. Cave said that he was kept in an isolated room in a hospital in London and assured her fans he is 'doing well' now. The 33-year-old actor took to Instagram on Tuesday to share the news and posted an image of her child in a hospital room, alongside a laptop playing Prime Minister Boris Johnson's speech announcing a new lockdown in the UK. "I watched the news about lockdown from an isolated room in the hospital. Poor baby is COVID positive. He's okay and doing well but they are being vigilant and cautious, thankfully. This strain is super powerful and contagious so I do hope that people take extra care in the coming weeks," Cave wrote.
