<p>However, he was also a philanthropist, who donated huge funds to support schools, hospitals, churches, and almshouses in Bristol and his legacy can be seen on Bristol's memorials and streets.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Marvin Rees, Mayor of Bristol said that the statue that thrown into the harbour will likely be fished out and find a place in a museum.</p>

<p>"It's still underwater, at some point it will be fished out... we will obviously take the statue out," Rees said, in an interview, to BBC Radio Bristol.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Highlighting that he doesn't support criminal damage, the mayor also said that the toppling is a part of "statue's history', saying that people didn't want it so they gathered together and committed the act.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The incident went viral on social media as people took videos of the statute being thrown into the water.</p>

<p>Bristol mayor Marvin Rees said: "I know the removal of the Colston Statue will divide opinion, as the statue itself has done for many years," adding, "However, it's important to listen to those who found the statue to represent an affront to humanity."</p>

<p>The Opposition welcomed the toppling of the statute with Labour party lawmaker Clive Lewis saying: "Someone responsible for immeasurable blood &amp; suffering. We’ll never solve structural racism till we get to grips with our history in all its complexity. #BLM"</p>

<p>There were protests across the country in Manchester, Wolverhampton, Nottingham including in Edinburg and Glasgow.</p>

<p>In London where protests were mainly peaceful, twenty-nine arrests were made even as scuffles were reported in front of PM Johnson's residence at 10 Downing Street.</p>

<p>Colston whose statute was brought down was known to have a monopoly on the west African slave trade. Colston had joined a company Royal African Company (RAC) in 1680 which is believed to have sold around 100,000 west Africans in the Caribbean and the Americas.</p>

Black lives matter protests gain momentum worldwide

<p>National Football League (NFL) Commissioner Roger Goodell said the league made mistakes in not listening to players, in a video on Friday denouncing racism in the United States amid widespread protests over police brutality against black people.</p>

<p>"We, the National Football League, admit we were wrong for not listening to NFL players earlier and encourage all to speak out and peacefully protest," said Goodell. "We, the National Football League, believe black lives matter."</p>

<p>The NFL has been locked in an ongoing debate with players over kneeling protests during the customary pre-game playing of the national anthem. The practice was popularized by quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who is black, in 2016 to protest racial injustice and police brutality.</p>

<p>Kaepernick, who in 2013 led the San Francisco 49ers to the Super Bowl but lost to the Baltimore Ravens, filed a grievance against the league in 2017, claiming collusion as no teams signed him after he parted ways with the Niners. The NFL and Kaepernick settled in 2019.</p>

<p>"Protests around the country are emblematic of the centuries of silence, inequality and oppression of black players, coaches, fans and staff," said Goodell. "I will be reaching out to players who have raised their voices and others on how we can improve."</p>

Additionally, he said to examine the composition of one’s formation and note if there is a lack of diversity. Not only will increased diversity help wipe out bigotry, but it will increase formation effectiveness, he said.</p>

<p>“If you don’t think there is a problem, you might be part of the problem,” Abrams said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“Have the courage to start the conversation.”</p>

<p>“Last and most importantly, we need to do less talking the talk, and start walking the walk in our daily actions that demonstrates our commitment to our values and dignity and respect for everyone,” Abrams said. “Together we’re stronger. You can make a difference. Let’s commit to it.”</p>

<p>British street artist Banksy&nbsp;has revealed new artwork inspired by the death of George Floyd, showing his support for the Black Lives Matter movement.</p>

<p>It features the scene of a vigil, in which a candle burns the American flag.</p>

<p>The street artist posted an image of it on his Instagram account, and wrote: "At first I thought I should just shut up and listen to black people about this issue. But why would I do that? It's not their problem, it's mine."</p>
