Initially, three men were kidnapped, and out of them, one was rescued.

All three men were residents of Thoubal district and were on their way to appear in the Staff Selection Commission (SSC) general duty recruitment test at Keithelmanbi when they went missing, the family of one of the three men rescued by the army on Saturday told local media.

On Friday (June 28), the Manipur CM&nbsp;announced that a meeting with NDA allies, who collectively hold 53 of the state's 60 Assembly seats, including 37 seats held by the BJP, was held the previous night.&nbsp;It was decided during the meeting that memorandum outlining measures for lasting peace in Manipur would be submitted to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

"The possibility of making a courtesy call to Delhi to meet with PM Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah was also discussed. Whenever the meeting will happen, I will also go. The INDIA alliance now holds more than 272 seats in the Lok Sabha, while the BJP alone holds 240 seats, with allies constituting the remaining seats in the NDA's total of 293.

Manipur MLAs in Delhi; Chief Minister Biren Singh dismisses resignation speculations

A police officer was shot dead by suspected tribal militants at Moreh in Manipur's Tengnoupal district on Tuesday (Oct 31).

The incident took place when Moreh SDPO Chingtham Anand, along with other police officers, was inspecting the newly constructed helipad at the Eastern ground in the border town, which as per news agency PTI reports, is dominated by Kuki-Zo community people.

A senior police official said that after being shot at, the SDPO was immediately rushed to a primary health centre in Moreh where he succumbed to the bullet injury.

The incident has prompted an operation in the area to capture the militants.

This comes two weeks after members of several civil society organisations, particularly the ones based in Moreh, demanded the state forces be removed from the border town.

As per news agency PTI reports, the Manipur police, in the last couple of days, have apprehended more than 10 Myanmarese for allegedly stealing items from abandoned residences of Meiteis and for illegally entering into the Indian territory.

To this, Manipur CM N Biren Singh had stated, "This happened when some particular organisations were protesting against the deployment of state police and commandos at Moreh town".

India: Manipur police officer shot dead by suspected tribal militants at Moreh

At least 40 armed militants responsible for setting ablaze houses and killing civilians in violence-hit India’s northeastern state of Manipur were killed, Chief Minister N Biren Singh said on Sunday.

The CM said that the casualties were a result of fresh encounter&nbsp;between the security forces and the militants across different parts of the state. A few of the armed rebels were arrested as well.

“In retaliatory and defensive operations against militant groups who are using sophisticated arms against the civilian population, around 30 militants have been killed in different areas. A few have also been arrested by the security forces,” the chief minister said.

The army personnel were deployed in the state to neutralise the warring tribal communities in order to restore peace in the land.

However, some casualties also arose from the civilian side after two persons were killed and 12 injured in different instances during clashes between militants and security forces since the early hours of the day.

At Phayeng in Imphal West district, one person died and another sustained bullet injuries suspected militants from the Kuki tribe opened fire at them, police officials said.

"According to our information, firing has been reported from Sugnu in Kakching, Kangvi in Churachandpur, Kangchup in Imphal West, Sagolmang in Imphal East, Nungoipokpi in Bishenpur, Khurkhul in&nbsp;Imphal&nbsp;West and YKPI in Kangpokpi," an official told PTI news agency.

<h2>Army chief holds meeting with CM</h2>

Indian Army Chief General Manoj Pande, who arrived in Imphal on Saturday, met Singh earlier in the day and discussed the current security situation in Manipur and the steps taken by the Army to restore peace.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah is also set to arrive in Manipur on Monday, nearly a month after the violence first escalated on May 3. He has announced a three-day trip during which he will meet various stakeholders and encourage a dialogue.

In a statement on Sunday, the United People’s Front and Kuki National Organisation said they were looking forward to Shah’s visit.

There is heavy army and paramilitary presence in the state, particularly in areas seen as sensitive.

The root cause of the violence is said to have arisen out of the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe status, which the Gauhati High Court supported.

The hill tribes in Manipur feel it would be unfair to grant the majority Meitei community ST status, and would impinge on their right to jobs and education.

The violence has impacted the daily life of the residents as essential prices of commodities have been reportedly rising owing to the conflict.

India: 40 militants gunned down, says Manipur CM Singh as violence continues

The official death toll in the violence in India’s northeastern Manipur state has reached 54 even as Union Home Minister Amit Shah reviewed the situation with Chief Minister N Biren Singh and top officials.

Local reports stated that normalcy has returned in some parts of the state as the Indian Army and other paramilitary forces were able to successfully control some of the violence-hit regions.

In the capital&nbsp;Imphal Valley, shops and markets reopened and roads were bustling with cars on Saturday morning, PTI news agency reported.

Moreover, heavy security presence was witnessed in many areas as army troops, rapid action force, and central police forces were visible in all major areas and roads, according to the report.

Meanwhile, the paramilitary forces continued with their anti-militant operations as five hill-based ultras were killed and two India Reserve Battalion jawans were injured in two separate encounters in Churachandpur district on Friday night, police said.

An encounter ensued at Saiton in Churachandpur district between the security forces and the militants in which four militants were gunned down, the police said.

It was reported that the militants opened fire at security forces at Torbung forcing them to return the fire. In the exchange of fire, one militant was killed and two IRB jawans were injured, the police said.

So far, 13,000 people have been rescued and shifted to safe shelters, a defence spokesperson said, adding that the army brought Churachandpur, Moreh, Kakching, and Kangpokpi districts under its "firm control".

"In the past 12 hours, Imphal East and West districts witnessed sporadic incidents of arson and attempts by inimical elements to establish blockades. However, the situation was controlled by a firm and synergised response," the defence official said on Friday night.

PTI quoting sources claimed that the fighting between communities left scores of people dead and nearly a hundred injured. But the officials are yet to confirm this.

"Prompt response by security forces led to rescuing of civilians of all communities from various minority pockets of areas affected by violence. As a result, Churachandpur, Kangpokpi, Moreh, and Kakching are now under firm control with no major violence reported since yesterday night," the spokesperson added.

How did the violence unfold?

The violence began on Wednesday in the Torbung area in Churachandpur district when the All Tribal Students Union Manipur (ATSUM) took out the 'Tribal Solidarity March' to protest the demand of Meiteis for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status.

The march was organised by some tribals, including&nbsp;Kukis, after the Manipur High Court asked the state government last month to send a recommendation to the Centre within four weeks on the demand for ST status by the Metei community.

During the march in Torbung, an armed mob allegedly attacked people of the Meitei community, leading to retaliatory attacks in the valley districts, which escalated the violence throughout the state, police said.

Meiteis account for about 53 per cent of the population and live mostly in the Imphal Valley. Tribals, who include&nbsp;Kukis, account for another 40 per cent of the population and live mostly in the hill districts which surround the Valley.

Local reports stated that normalcy has returned in some parts of the state as the Indian Army and other paramilitary forces were able to successfully control some of the violence-hit regions. In the capital Imphal Valley, shops and markets reopened and roads were bustling with cars on Saturday morning, PTI news agency reported. Moreover, heavy security presence was witnessed in many areas as army troops, rapid action force, and central police forces were visible in all major areas and roads, according to the report. Meanwhile, the paramilitary forces continued with their anti-militant operations as five hill-based ultras were killed and two India Reserve Battalion jawans were injured in two separate encounters in Churachandpur district on Friday night, police said. An encounter ensued at Saiton in Churachandpur district between the security forces and the militants in which four militants were gunned down, the police said. It was reported that the militants opened fire at security forces at Torbung forcing them to return the fire. In the exchange of fire, one militant was killed and two IRB jawans were injured, the police said. So far, 13,000 people have been rescued and shifted to safe shelters, a defence spokesperson said, adding that the army brought Churachandpur, Moreh, Kakching, and Kangpokpi districts under its "firm control". "In the past 12 hours, Imphal East and West districts witnessed sporadic incidents of arson and attempts by inimical elements to establish blockades. However, the situation was controlled by a firm and synergised response," the defence official said on Friday night. PTI quoting sources claimed that the fighting between communities left scores of people dead and nearly a hundred injured. But the officials are yet to confirm this. "Prompt response by security forces led to rescuing of civilians of all communities from various minority pockets of areas affected by violence. As a result, Churachandpur, Kangpokpi, Moreh, and Kakching are now under firm control with no major violence reported since yesterday night," the spokesperson added. How did the violence unfold? The violence began on Wednesday in the Torbung area in Churachandpur district when the All Tribal Students Union Manipur (ATSUM) took out the 'Tribal Solidarity March' to protest the demand of Meiteis for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status. The march was organised by some tribals, including Kukis, after the Manipur High Court asked the state government last month to send a recommendation to the Centre within four weeks on the demand for ST status by the Metei community. During the march in Torbung, an armed mob allegedly attacked people of the Meitei community, leading to retaliatory attacks in the valley districts, which escalated the violence throughout the state, police said. Meiteis account for about 53 per cent of the population and live mostly in the Imphal Valley. At least 14 people have died while more than 60 are feared buried after a rain-induced landslide wept a railway construction camp, where the workers were sleeping in a makeshift camp, in India’s northeast Manipur state.

The incident took place at Tupul yard railway construction camp in Noney district on Wednesday night. Around 20 people were rescued from the rubble on Thursday morning, while officials are racing against time to find more buried people.

Evacuation of critically injured is in progress but bad weather and fresh landslides are hampering rescue operations, the North-East Frontier Railway CPRO said in a statement.

The Indian Army has been dispatched to join the search, but officials were not optimistic.

The chances of the remaining people surviving are very thin considering the fact that the landslide occurred around 2 am, Haulianlal Guite, District Magistrate of Noney district in Manipur, told Reuters by telephone.

This month unprecedented rains have lashed India’s northeastern states and neighbouring Bangladesh, killing more than 150 people.

“We're working hard but because of rains &amp; other factors, this happened. It is the main Tulum station where train was supposed to stop. Maybe because of heavy on-going work, some seismic disturbance may have taken place. 13 bodies yet taken out,” DGP P Doungel told ANI news agency on Wednesday evening.

Chief Minister N Biren Singh visited the affected site to take stock of the situation and assured to press more personal for the rescue operation.

“Visited Tupul to take stock of unfortunate landslide situation. I’m thankful to Hon’ble HM Shri Amit Shah Ji for calling me to assess the situation &amp; assured all possible assistance. A team of NDRF has already reached the site for rescue operation," tweeted Singh.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he is in touch with the minister and is constantly monitoring the situation.

"Spoke to Manipur CM N Biren Singh and reviewed the situation due to a tragic landslide. Assured all possible support from the Centre. I pray for the safety of all those affected. My thoughts are with bereaved families. May the injured recover soon," Modi tweeted.

Manipur's assembly elections were held in two phases on February 28 and March 5.&nbsp;

The Manipur Progressive Secular Alliance, which includes the Congress, Communist Party of India, Communist Party of India (Marxist), Forward Bloc, Revolutionary Socialist Party, and Janata Dal, is positioned against the BJP in Manipur (Secular).

While the two major parties are considered to be the front-runners, other parties such as the National People's Party (NPP), Naga People's Front (NPF), and the JD(U) are likely to play important roles if a coalition is formed because no one party can win a majority.&nbsp;

In 2017, the BJP had formed the government in Manipur with the support of the National People`s Party (NPP), Naga People`s Front (NPF) and the Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) but this time, it decided to go solo and is contesting on all the 60 seats.

Indefinite economic blockade of Manipur to be lifted from midnight today

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Nongthombam Biren Singh on Wednesday took charge as the chief minister of Manipur.

He was sworn-in as chief minister of the north-eastern state earlier in the day and was administered oath of office by Governor Najma Heptullah.

The Governor on Tuesday invited Biren Singh -- who was unanimously elected the leader of the 21-member BJP legislature party a day earlier -- to form the government after four members of the Naga People&#39;s Front NPF, an NDA ally, met her and declared their support to the BJP.

The party has enlisted the support of regional parties, the National People&#39;s Party (NPP) and NPF -- each with four seats -- and one legislator each of the Lok Janshakti Party, Trinamool Congress and Congress. The NPP, NPF and LJP are BJP allies at the Centre.

Biren Singh, a national-level footballer-turned-journalist, joined politics in 2002. He was elected to the Manipur Legislative Assembly from the Democratic Revolutionary People&#39;s Party, which later merged with the Congress. In 2003, he was appointed as a minister in the state government and retained his assembly seat in both the 2007 and 2012 Assembly elections.&nbsp;

His relationship with then chief minister Okram Ibobi Singh fell apart after he was excluded from the Cabinet in 2012.&nbsp;

In October 2016, Singh left the Congress and joined BJP.

Thirty-one MLAs are needed to form the government in the 60 member-Assembly.&nbsp;

Both the BJP and Congress had earlier staked claim to form the government. The Congress, which has 28 MLAs, led the tally.&nbsp;
