Oscars 2021: India out of Oscars race as Academy unveils shortlists in 9 categories

India has made its selection for Oscars 2021 Best international Feature Film category and its Malayalam director Lijo Jose Pellissery’s ‘Jallikattu’.

The film was chosen by a 14-member committee of the Film Federation of India.

The Oscar entry ‘Jallikattu’ revolves around a tamed buffalo that liberates itself from its owner on the eve of its scheduled slaughter and runs amok through a town in Kerala’s Idduki district. The film is based on the short story Maoist by S Hareesh, who has also written the screenplay along with R Jayakumar.

While making the announcement, committee chairperson Rahul Rawail said at the press conference, “It brings out the raw problems that are there in human beings. The emotions that came up really moved all of us. ‘Soul’ aka Rooh is set in an indeterminate period in the past as it tells the story of the arrival of a small girl who brings ominous predictions and strange incidents to a poor family living in a forest.

A committee arranged by the National Film Development Corporation (FINAS) made the selection. In a statement, they said, “The selection went through a detailed evaluation process based on filming criteria like direction, storyline, cinematography, screenplay, acting, music score, artistic elements and editing apart from adhering to the rules set by the organizers of the Oscars.”

A feature helmed by Emir Ezwan, ‘Soul’ had its world premiere at the Singapore International Film Festival and then the Jogja-Netpac Asian Film Festival.&nbsp;

The film was produced by Elise Shick, Shizreen Saleh and Amir Muhammad. The cast includes Farah Ahmad, Mhia Farhana, Harith Haziq, June Lojong, Namron, and Putri Qaseh as the little girl.
