England will assess star all-rounder Ben Stokes's fitness to bowl in this week's fifth Test with Australia at the Oval as they look for a consolation win after failing to regain the Ashes.

Stokes was included in an unchanged 13-man England squad announced Monday following a 185-run defeat in the fourth Test on Sunday that ensured Australia would keep hold of the Ashes at 2-1 up with one to play in the five-Test series.

Given the tight turnaround to a Test starting on Thursday, the lack of any changes is not altogether surprising.

It may well be, however, that national selector Ed Smith and his panel do make alterations for the upcoming tour of New Zealand, with promising batsmen Dominic Sibley and Zak Crawley among those pushing for places.

Durham paceman Stokes, England's vice-captain, did not bowl in Australia's second innings at Old Trafford following a right shoulder injury sustained during his 11th over in the tourists' first innings.

If Stokes is unfit to bowl at the Oval in south London, he is expected to play as a specialist batsman.

Stokes has been a shining light amid an often fallible England batting line-up this series, scoring 115 not out in the drawn second Test at Lord's before his stunning unbeaten 135 secured a dramatic one-wicket win in the third Test at Headingley.

England, if Stokes was selected purely as a batsman, would bring in a bowling all-rounder from within the squad in either Sam Curran, who would be playing on his Surrey home ground, or Chris Woakes.

Both Curran and Woakes missed out at Old Trafford.

If England coach Trevor Bayliss, in what will be his last Test before he leaves his post, and captain Joe Root bring in one of the pair, it would likely mean one of the struggling batsmen -- Jason Roy, Jonny Bairstow or Jos Buttler -- making way.

England have been without James Anderson, their all-time leading wicket-taker, for most of this series after the 37-year-old paceman broke down with a calf injury having bowled just four overs during Australia's 251-run win in the first Test at Edgbaston.

England to assess Ben Stokes's bowling fitness for Ashes finale

It is nine days since Ben Stokes hit a remarkable 135 not out to win the third Test of the Ashes series at Headingley, and as he prepares for the next instalment, Australia captain Tim Paine said thoughts of how to outwit the England batsman keep him awake at night.

England were nine wickets down with 73 runs required before Stokes' swashbuckling innings almost single-handedly kept England in the series and denied Australia a win that would have ensured the tourists retained the Ashes.

Questions have been asked of Paine's decisions in the decisive final hours of that Test. But asked whether he fears Stokes' feat may hang over his captaincy in the way that all-rounders Ian Botham and Andrew Flintoff impacted previous Aussie skippers, Paine said his concern was more basic.

"Nah, I haven't lost a hell of a lot of sleep thinking about my captaincy. But I have lost a bit of sleep thinking how we're going to get him out, that's for sure," he said.

"He's a class player, and he's really confident at the moment. He's going well. Like I said, we've got some plans for him - but we've just got to execute them a bit better," he said.

Paine believed spinner Nathan Lyon has troubled Stokes at various times, but he has urged his fielders to provide better support than they did at Headingley.

"I think Nathan has actually bowled really well to him. He's created a number of chances each time he's bowled to him.

Paine did however engage in some self-criticism about the way the last Test got away from his side.

"We made some mistakes, it happens. We have addressed it as a team and spoken about it honestly. I was certainly one of those people who made mistakes. I would have done some things differently with my field placings," he said.

"There were times, looking back at it, where it was obvious I should have had the field up and allowed Ben to hit a couple of boundaries so we had more balls at the tailender (Jack Leach).

England, bowled out for just 67 in their first innings, needed 73 more runs to reach a victory target of 359 when last man, the bespectacled Jack Leach, came into bat on the fourth day.

But Leach held firm before Stokes, the batting hero of England's World Cup final triumph, hit the winning runs by flaying paceman Pat Cummins for a four that saw the all-rounder finish on 135 not out.

Ben Stokes hit a stunning unbeaten century as England defeated Australia by one wicket to win an epic third Test at Headingley on Sunday and keep the Ashes alive. This was England's highest successful fourth-innings chase and the tenth highest in Test history. A remarkable victory, which arguably surpassed their 1981 Ashes Test triumph at Headingley when they beat Australia after following-on — saw England level the five-match series at 1-1. Ashes 2019: Ben Stokes stars as England win Headingley Test by 1 wicket

The Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) has announced that the overthrow incident involving Ben Stokes and Martin Guptill in the World Cup final will be reviewed in September this year.

"The WCC (World Cricket Committee) discussed Law 19.8 in relation to overthrows, in the context of the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup Final. WCC felt that the Law was clear but the matter will be reviewed by the laws sub-committee in September 2019," the MCC said in an official statement.

England had scripted history as it claimed its first-ever World Cup title on July 14. The final will be remembered for ages as it did not have a winner after the 50-over and super over action, as both were tied.

In the end, England were announced as the winner as they had hit more boundaries (26) as compared to New Zealand (17) in the match.

New Zealand had set up 242 for England. As the hosts needed nine runs off three balls, all-rounder Ben Stokes hit the ball into the deep and ran for a double. New Zealand's Martin Guptill threw the ball in an attempt to run out Stokes but the ball bounced off Stokes' bat and reached the boundary.

As a result of the overthrow, England were awarded six runs - two for a double and four for an overthrow.

Taufel, who had umpired during the 2011 World Cup final, had confirmed that the officiating umpires Kumar Dharmasena and Marais Erasmus made a mistake.

"There was a judgment error on the overthrow. The judgment error was the timing of when the fielder threw the ball. The act of the overthrow starts when the fielder releases the ball. That's the act. It becomes an overthrow from the instant of the throw," Taufel had said.

Law 19.8 related to an "overthrow or wilful act of fielder", states: "If the boundary results from an overthrow or from the willful act of a fielder, the runs scored shall be any runs for penalties awarded to either side, and the allowance for the boundary, and the runs completed by the batsmen, together with the run in progress if they had already crossed at the instant of the throw or act."

However, Taufel also defended the officiating umpires, saying they have to consider a number of things while examining every ball.

"In this particular case, the umpires have got a lot on their plate, because like every ball, they've had to watch the batsmen complete the first run, they've had to watch the ball being fielded, to understand how it's in play, whether the fielder's done the right thing. Then they've got to look to see when the ball is released, in case there is an overthrow. And that happens every delivery of the game. And then they've got to back to see where the two batsmen are," he had said.

The retired Australian umpire had said that there was a judgment of error as Stokes and Adil Rashid had not crossed for the second run. The replays showed that the England batsmen had not crossed at the time of the throw.

As a result, five runs should have been awarded to England and Stokes should have been at the non-striker's end for the next ball.

"So it's unfortunate that there was a judgment error on the timing of the release of the ball and where the batsmen were. They did not cross on their second run, at the instant of the throw. So given that scenario, five runs should have been the correct allocation of runs, and Ben Stokes should have been at the non-striker`s end for the next delivery," he had said.

Australia captain Tim Paine won the toss and decided to bat in the first Ashes Test against England at Edgbaston on Thursday.

Ashes-holders Australia has not won a match of any kind at Edgbaston since 2001, while England has won their past 11 internationals at the Birmingham ground.

Australia is looking for their first Ashes series win in England in 18 years.

"The wicket looks nice and hard and dry," said Tim Paine at the toss. "Hopefully we post a good total and we've got (off-spinner) Nathan Lyon up our sleeve at the back end of the game."

As expected, the visitors included all three players given lengthy bans for their roles in a ball-tampering scandal in South Africa last year -- David Warner, Cameron Bancroft and former captain Steve Smith.

Openers Bancroft and Warner knew they would be booed on their way to the middle, judging by the hostile reception Warner and top-order batsman Smith received during the recent World Cup in England and Wales.

They did not have to wait even that long to face the boo-boys, with the Australia team as a whole jeered onto the field for a pre-match anthem ceremony -- an unusual occurrence before a Test match in England.

Reserve wicketkeeper Matthew Wade was included as a specialist batsman after making three hundred for Australia A on their tour of England.

Usman Khawaja was also back in the top order following a hamstring injury that cut short his involvement in the World Cup, which saw Australia defeated by eventual champions England in an Edgbaston semi-final.

Australia also included experienced paceman Peter Siddle, who has been playing English county cricket this season for Essex, in an attack featuring James Pattinson and Pat Cummins.

"He's a class performer there," said wicketkeeper Paine. "He complements the other two seamers really nicely."

But there was no place for World Cup spearhead Mitchell Starc.

Fellow World Cup winners Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler returned after being rested against Ireland.

Root had no qualms about losing the toss, saying: "I'm not disappointed at all. It's overcast conditions. It'll be nice to get off to a good start.

"We've go so many great options to go to, especially with the ball. This morning is a great opportunity to exploit that.

Australia win toss and bat against England in first Ashes Test

England captain Joe Root is looking forward to having "natural leader" Ben Stokes back alongside him as his Test deputy during the Ashes.

The pair have been friends since their days playing youth cricket, with Root lobbying for Stokes's return to a position the all rounder held until he was involved in a street brawl in Bristol in 2017.

Stokes missed five months of international cricket, including England's 4-0 Ashes series loss in Australia under Root, before being cleared of affray in a court case in August 2018.

But the 28-year-old was one of the stars of England's triumphant World Cup campaign earlier this season and Root, also involved in that success, is eager to have Stokes back as his Test vice captain after Jos Buttler took over the role.

"I have asked for a long time (to have Stokes back as vice-captain) but he was made available at the end of the World Cup," Root said during his pre match press conference at Edgbaston on Wednesday, on the eve of the series opener.

"It is fantastic to have Ben back, not just playing and playing back somewhere near his best -- it has been coming a long time.

"The way he stepped up in big moments in that World Cup was just him down to a tee. It is what he does -- he responds well to responsibility and to the big moments.

"He offers with all three departments -- he bowls, bats and he is one of the best fielders and he drags people with him as a natural leader on the field and in the dressing room."

Root praised Buttler but said Buttler was aware Stokes would be brought back as vice-captain when there was an opportunity to do so.

England's World Cup win under the leadership of one day specialist Eoin Morgan achieved a long held goal but Root rejected suggestions that meant the pressure to regain the Ashes had eased as a result.

"I think if you speak to anyone who has captained England and is on the verge of an Ashes series, to say it doesn't mean as much as any other event, I don't think any of them would agree," he said.

"It's huge. It's a great opportunity. Cricket in this country is probably at an all time high, it's got interest it probably hasn't had for a long time and we've got an opportunity as a team to make this summer a very memorable one."

Root is going back up to number three in the batting order and Joe Denly dropping down to four as England look to shore up their struggling line up.

England captain Root glad to have Stokes as his Ashes deputy

England's World Cup hero Ben Stokes reacted on being nominated for the New Zealander of the Year award. He said he is flattered but New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson would be a worthy recipient of the prestigious award.

Stokes, who played a crucial role in England's World Cup victory, was born in New Zealand (Christchurch) and moved to northern England at the age of 12.

The left-hander played a knock of 84 runs in the final and he went on to amass 465 runs in the World Cup.

While in an Instagram post, Stokes said, "I am flattered to be nominated for New Zealander of the Year. I am proud of my New Zealand and Maori heritage but it would not sit right with me to be nominated for this prestigious award."

"There are people who deserve this recognition more and have done a lot more for the country of New Zealand," he added.

"I have helped England lift a World Cup and my life is firmly established in the UK - it has been since I was 12-years old.

Stokes insisted that Williamson should get the honour as he had led the Kiwis to the World Cup final and was adjudged Player of the Tournament.

"I feel the whole country should align their support to New Zealand captain Kane Williamson. He should be revered as a kiwi legend. He led his team in this World Cup with distinction and honour. He was player of the tournament and an inspirational leader of men," he noted.

"He shows humility and empathy to every situation and is an all-round good bloke. He typifies what it is to be a New Zealander. He would be a worthy recipient of this accolade. New Zealand, fully support him. He deserves it and gets my vote," Stokes signed off.

I am proud of my New Zealand and Maori heritage but it would not sit right with me to be nominated for this prestigious award." "There are people who deserve this recognition more and have done a lot more for the country of New Zealand," he added. England's World Cup winner Ben Stokes nominated for New Zealander of the Year

A group of rueful New Zealand players touched down on home soil on Thursday, still coming to terms with the gut-wrenching defeat to England in the World Cup final.

Pace bowler Trent Boult was among six Black Caps players making a low-key homecoming at Auckland airport, soaking up commiserations from a few fans and well-wishers.

The left-armer was still haunted by the deflection off Ben Stokes's bat in the 50th over that raced to the boundary and helped send the final into a Super Over before England claimed the win on the total boundaries scored.

"It's natural to nitpick, to wonder about all those little things and how it could have been a totally different game," he told reporters at the airport.

"I've been living that last over in my mind a lot - somehow I got hit for six along the ground which has never happened before.''

"To see the scores level (after the Super Over) and still lose, yeah, that was a pretty unique situation," Boult said.

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said she wanted to put on a home-coming celebration for the team but their different schedules and commitments have put the idea on ice for the time being.

World Cup final: Jofra Archer reveals Ben Stokes' pre-super over advice

England captain Eoin Morgan hailed the diverse backgrounds and cultures in the England cricket team after their dramatic World Cup win on July 14 at Lord's.

The final match between hosts England and New Zealand was forced into the Super Over, which was also tied and Morgan's side triumphed on boundary count during the match — 26 to 17.

It's not incorrect to say that England have won the title with the rest of the world as their team is comprised of players of different origin.

Captain Morgan was born in Dublin, Ireland and he was also named in Ireland's 15-man squad for the 2007 World Cup.

All-rounder Ben Stokes was born in New Zealand (Christchurch) and moved to northern England at the age of 12.

Barbados-born fast bowler Jofra Archer has played for West Indies Under-19s team.

Adil Rashid and Moeen Ali nare of Pakistani origin. They belong to the Mirpuri community and their family had migrated to England in 1967.

Jason Roy was born in South African (Durban) and moved to England along with his family from South Africa when he was 10 years old.

After the victory, Morgan hopes that World Cup glory will inspire a new generation of fans to take up the sport as there have long been concerns about declining player numbers in English cricket.

On being asked about the victory and if England had enjoyed the famed luck of the Irish, Morgan said, "I spoke to Adil (England leg-spinner Adil Rashid), he said Allah was definitely with us. "It actually epitomises our team, quite diverse backgrounds and cultures," Morgan added. Watch: Ben Stokes' parents reacted after England's World Cup win × After the victory, Morgan hopes that World Cup glory will inspire a new generation of fans to take up the sport as there have long been concerns about declining player numbers in English cricket.

Chasing a challenging total of 312, the Proteas were bundled out on 207 inside 40 overs.

"This is where it's important for us to make sure that you look at the World Cup for what it is. You know, you`re going to play games. You're going to come up against quality opposition. England was better than us in all three facets of the game. They show why they are such a good cricket team, and now we have to look at the league. It's a league competition," ESPNcricinfo quoted du Plessis as saying.

"As disappointed as we are with our performances today, you have to make sure you learn from it quickly and put every single dart to bed because there is the next game and you have to make sure you play good cricket again," he added.

One of their go-to bowlers, Lungi Ngidi picked up three wickets, including ending the innings of Ben Stokes for 89.

Veteran leg-spinner Imran Tahir and Kagiso Rabada returned with two wickets each.

"Yeah, I thought after the first half, that we did a good job with the ball. You know, as I said before this game, England more so than any other team in this World Cup, bat longer than anyone else. So if you can stop them with the long batting line-up you have, then you`re doing a great job with the ball," the South Africa captain said.

"For them to score as little runs as they did the last 15 overs and us picking up as many wickets as we did, was a great achievement by our bowling units. But yeah, as I said, 310 is still a big score, so what you need to do is you need to start well, and we didn`t have that luxury," he noted.

The chase looked achievable until Hashim Amla retired hurt after getting hit by a Jofra Archer bouncer.

The setback disrupted the South Africa batting and a wobble took place too before Quinton de Kock held his nerves to rebuild the side.

In the 23rd over, Liam Plunkett dismissed de Kock which broke the backbone of South Africa.

Amla returned to bat but it was too late as his side was at 180/7 and eventually South Africa folded.

"When you are chasing a big score like 310 what you need is a good start. You need to make sure that you settle the bats in the dressing room with a good partnership, whether it's zero down or one down, but a good start is really important and obviously with him (Amla) coming off, and then a few overs later, Aiden (Markram) got out and then one or two overs later, I got out. When you go three-down on a big score like that, you're making it really tough for our batting unit to perform. And then the score just looks big. It looks too far," du Plessis said.
