There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack, but another senior&nbsp;Lebanese&nbsp;security source told Reuters that the army was investigating possible links to the Islamic State group.

The source said the attacker had "ISIS" in English and "Islamic State" in Arabic written on clothes he was wearing.&nbsp;Lebanese&nbsp;security forces have detained two sheikhs as well as the attacker's family, the source added.

Reuters verified pictures of the suspected attacker circulating online and geolocated them to near the&nbsp;embassy. Reuters verified part of the Arabic writing on his vest, which read "Islamic."

The research, conducted by scientists at the American University of Beirut (AUB), found that the risk of developing cancer in the capital city has increased by two times over the past five years. “The results are alarming,” says Najat Saliba, an atmospheric chemist who led the study.

According to the data collected by the AUB researchers, pollution in Beirut has doubled since 2017. The PM2.5 level generally hovers around 60 micrograms a cubic metre, four times what the World Health Organization recommends for healthy breathing.

The researchers add that the relation between the increasing pollution and cancer rates is quite obvious.

As per estimates, cancer rates in the city have been rising 30 per cent annually since 2020, with patients getting younger and more aggressive.

Hani Nassar, who runs a cancer support organisation in the country, says money is also a major problem for cancer patients. The $6,000/month medication for a society where most individuals earn $150 is a back-breaking affair.

“We have a lot of cancer patients who have not even begun any treatment,” says Hani. “They just end up saying, ‘OK, I will die – I don’t want to deprive my family of our house, our car, etc., just to pay for this’,” he adds.

Beirut turns into cancer hotspot as Lebanon fails to curb use of diesel generators

Beirut airport was targetted by a cyberattack on Sunday (Jan 7), said Lebanon's state news agency, with local media sharing footage of the screen displays flashing anti-Hezbollah messages at its terminal.

"The cyberattack on the departure and arrival screens at the airport disrupted the BHS baggage inspection system," the National News Agency said.

The news agency further added that the authorities were attempting to restore the screens "and to maintain normal movement at the airport".

Local media circulated images of a message denouncing Lebanon's Iran-backed Hezbollah group, which as per news agency AFP reports, was displayed onscreen alongside the emblem of the Christian "Soldiers of God" group.

Since the Israel-Hamas conflict began on Oct 7, the Shiite Muslim movement Hezbollah and its arch-enemy Israel have engaged in almost daily cross-border gunfire, with the Lebanese group claiming it was operating in support of its Palestinian partner Hamas.

The message said the airport was "not the airport of Hezbollah and Iran", according to the reports.

"Hassan Nasrallah, no one will support you if you drag the country into war," it added, addressing the group's leader, also saying "We will not fight on behalf of anyone."

In a heartwarming incident, a kitten has been rescued from a rain pipe after being stuck there for three days.

The little creature was trapped in the rain pipe last week in Beirut, Lebanon and was rescued by volunteers from the charity Animals Lebanon.

Small cameras were used to identify and track the exact location of the animal before pulling it out.

After being successfully pulled out, the crowd applauded the rescue workers and one said, 'I think we should call her Beirut!'

As per their official website, Animal Lebanon 'improves the welfare of animals through comprehensive national animal protection and welfare legislation.'

The charity group aims at enacting and enforcing comprehensive national animal protection and welfare legislation.

The group had established a model shelter for companion animals while providing nationwide assistance for cats and dogs in need.&nbsp;

A similar incident took place earlier this week in Nottinghamshire where firefighters rescued an eight-week-old kitten that was stuck in a drain pipe.

The crews from Edwinstowe in Nottinghamshire pulled out the stricken feline after being discovered at the Dukeries Complex in Boughton.

The team used small electric cutters to carefully rescue the young cat.

As per BBC, Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service said the kitten was now being looked after by the vets.

Watch manager Sean McCallum said: "We believe the kitten had been trapped in the drainpipe for a few days, so at only eight weeks old, he's a lucky little chap."

"Inspector Kate Burris from the RSPCA also attended the incident and provided some much-needed TLC, before taking him for veterinary care.

"We hear he's doing very well!"
