Bangladesh on Saturday called up uncapped all-rounder Mahedi Hasan and pace bowlers Hasan Mahmud and Shoriful Islam in their 18-man squad for the three-match one-day international series against West Indies.

The series, which begins with the first match in Dhaka on January 20, marks the return of international cricket to Bangladesh after a Covid-19 disruption.

Chief selector Minhajul Abedin said they announced a relatively large squad as a precaution, with the series being held under strict health protocols.

"We took several extra players because we are facing a pandemic now. You cannot add a player to the squad anytime in this kind of situation," he said.

"Our three uncapped players Mahedi, Hasan and Shoriful have all did well in domestic cricket recently. We included them because we thought it's also a time for us to look for the future," he added.

The series is also Bangladesh's first since pace bowler Mashrafe Mortaza stepped down as captain in March.

Mashrafe was left out of the preliminary squad for the series in Bangladesh's first indication of a new beginning under opener Tamim Iqbal, who was named captain in March but has yet to assume his role.

All-rounder Shakib Al Hasan also returned to the Bangladesh squad after serving out his one-year ban for failure to report multiple corrupt approaches.

Taskin Ahmed was recalled in a pace heavy squad, which also included Rubel Hossain and Mustafizur Rahman.

The second and third ODIs of the series will be on January 22 and 25, respectively in Dhaka and Chittagong.

West Indies will also play two Test matches against the hosts during their tour.

India and Bangladesh have agreed to enhance counter-terror cooperation especially against global terror groups at the first police chief's dialogue. The focus has also been on increasing real-time intelligence via designated "nodal points".

A statement from India's home ministry said, "Designated ‘nodal points’ would be established for timely and effective handling and response to existing as well as emerging security and counter-terrorism challenges."

South Asia has a number of globally listed terrorists, mostly based in Pakistan such as Lashkar e Taiba, Jaish-e-Mohammed responsible for terror attacks in India, Afghanistan. The 2016 Islamabad SAARC summit was boycotted by India, Bangladesh along with other south Asian countries in the aftermath of Uri Attack.

During the virtual meet, both sides appreciated each other’s ongoing action against insurgent groups operating in the region. The effort seen timely will also focus on coordinated measures to combat trans-border criminal activities, including smuggling of drugs, Fake Indian Currency Notes (FICN), arms and ammunition, and human trafficking.

The Indian release said, "The institution of Police Chiefs’ Dialogue, assisted by members of other security agencies on both sides, will further enhance the existing cooperation between the police forces of both countries".

The meeting comes even as New Delhi and Dhaka have been increasing cooperation in every sector from connectivity to covid crisis. Last month, PM Modi and PM Hasina held a virtual summit, and ahead of that India's foreign secretary Harsh Shringla had visited the country, his first visit amid the pandemic. This year, Bangladesh celebrates its 50th year of independence which will see Indian PM visiting the country in March. In fact, a contingent from Bangladeshi defence forces will take part in India's Republic Day parade later this month.

A release from the Bangladeshi government said that minister Alam, "reiterated the importance of resolving outstanding bilateral issues with Pakistan, including offering of an official apology from Pakistan for the genocide committed in the Bangladesh Liberation War of 1971". The development comes in the year in which Bangladesh celebrates 50 years of Independence. 1971 saw Pakistani troops committing atrocities in the then East Pakistan leading to an international humanitarian crisis. Several million died due to the actions of the Pakistani army but ultimately Bangladesh gained its independence.

Not for the first time Bangladesh has raised the 1971 genocide with Islamabad. During Pakistan's envoy meets with Bangladeshi PM Shiekh Hasina in December, the latter had sternly reminded him that atrocities committed by the Pakistani army against her country can neither be forgotten nor forgiven

Meanwhile, the Bangladeshi minister during his meet with envoy said Dhaka is keen to enhancing ties with all neighbouring countries and, “in line with that spirit, we look forward to engaging with Pakistan”. He urged Pakistan to grant access to more Bangladeshi products by utilizing the existing SAFTA provisions, relaxing the negative list and removing trade barriers.

Bangladesh started moving a second group of Rohingya Muslim refugees to a low-lying island in the Bay of Bengal on Tuesday, despite opposition from rights groups worried about the new site`s vulnerability to floods.

The United Nations says it has not been involved in the relocation but urged the government to ensure no refugee is forced to move to Bhasan Char island, which only emerged from the sea 20 years ago.

"We are ready to receive the new arrivals," Navy Commodore Abdullah Al Mamun Chowdhury said from the island of the 1,804 Rohingya being moved in seven ships.

A first group of more than 1,600 Rohingya, members of a minority group who have fled from Myanmar, were relocated from their rickety camps near the Myanmar border to Bhasan Char earlier in the month.

Storms regularly hit the Bangladesh coast. In 1991, nearly 143,000 people were killed when a cyclone whipped up a 4.5-metre (15-foot) tidal surge.

The government has built a 12-km (7.5 mile) embankment to protect the island along with housing for 100,000 people. It dismisses the risks.

"The island is completely safe," Foreign Minister Abdul Momen told Reuters.

The government also says the relocation is voluntary but some refugees from the first group have spoken about being coerced to go.

The human rights group Amnesty International also expressed concern.

"(A) lack of transparency in the consultation process with refugees, and allegations from within the community about cash incentives being offered to Rohingya families to relocate to Bhashan Char as well as use of intimidation tactics are making the relocation process questionable," the group said.

Momen rejected such doubts.

"The Rohingya people who have shifted there are very happy with the arrangement. Some evil groups are spreading negative propaganda," he said.

Two Rohingya men on board one of the ships heading to the island from the port of Chittagong told Reuters they were moving to their new home voluntarily. One said he was joining relatives already there while the other was moving with his wife and six children.

"There is so much suffering and conflict in the camp," said one of the men. "We are going there in the hope of a better life."

Reuters is withholding their names given the controversy around the move among the community, with many keen to stay on the mainland.

A Bangladeshi film director has been arrested and charged after a scene depicting police harshly interrogating a rape victim and highlighting attitudes towards violence against women in the conservative nation sparked the ire of the force.

The first half of "Nabab LLB", a fictional courtroom drama about rape and the treatment of victims starring megastar Shakib Khan, was released on a local streaming service in mid-December.

The scene from the movie directed by Anonno Mamun went viral on social media last week, with criticism directed at police over their handling of the case.

It angered the force, with Mamun, 34, and the actor who played the policeman, 46-year-old Shaheen Mridha, arrested on Friday.

"The officer was interrogating her using very offensive gestures and obscene language which is the opposite of healthy entertainment and will create negative perceptions about policing among the public," Dhaka Metropolitan Police said on their news portal.

The statement added that the pair were arrested "for making and acting in a film containing such offensive and obscene dialogue".

They faced court on Friday and were charged with "making a film with pornographic content" over a different scene depicting the sexual assault, police added.

Officers said they were also seeking to arrest Orchita Sporshia, the 27-year-old actress who played the rape victim.

A senior police officer told AFP Saturday that the film "insulted the entire force".

"The plot is completely fabricated and unpleasant. It is based on total falsehood," the officer, who asked to remain anonymous, said.

The pair face up to seven years in jail if they are found guilty.

Movies are usually vetted by the country's censorship board but regulations to include streaming service offerings have yet to be finalised.

There are five local streaming platforms in Bangladesh, including recently launched iTheatre, which released "Nabab LLB". The second part of the film is due to be released in early January.

The arrests were denounced by rights activists, who said the film accurately depicted the struggles rape victims face in Bangladesh's legal system.

"These arrests are nothing new but the continuation of attacks on artistic freedom," activist Rezaur Rahman Lenin told AFP.

Activists say violence against women is rising in Bangladesh.

According to local human rights organisation Ain-o-Salish Kendra (ASK), between April and August more than 630 rape cases were reported, with 29 women killed after the assault while five others took their own life.

Bangladesh is set to move a second batch of Rohingya refugees from neighbouring Myanmar to the remote island of Bhasan Char in the Bay of Bengal this month, officials said on Sunday, despite calls by rights groups not to carry out further relocations.

Around 1,000 Rohingya refugees, members of a Muslim minority who have fled Myanmar, will be moved to the island in the next few days after Bangladesh relocated more than 1,600 early this month, two officials with the direct knowledge of the matter said.

"They will be moved to Chittagong first and then to Bhasan Char, depending on the high tide," one of the officials said. The officials declined to be named as the issue had not been made public.

Mohammed Shamsud Douza, the deputy Bangladesh government official in charge of refugees, said the relocation was voluntary. "They will not be sent against their will."

The United Nations has said it has not been allowed to carry out a technical and safety assessment of Bhasan Char, a flood-prone island in the Bay of Bengal, and was not involved in the transfer of refugees there.

Bangladesh says it is transferring only people who are willing to go and the move will ease chronic overcrowding in camps that are home to more than 1 million Rohingya.

But refugees and humanitarian workers say some of the Rohingya have been coerced into going to the island, which emerged from the sea 20 years ago.

Bangladesh Foreign Minister Abdul Momen told Reuters earlier this month the United Nations should first assess and verify how conducive the environment in Myanmar`s Rakhine state was for repatriating the refugees, before carrying out an assessment of Bhasan Char.

Several attempts to kickstart repatriation of Rohingya to Myanmar have failed after refugees said they were too fearful of further violence to return.

It is true that because of the pandemic, this year has been challenging but in these challenging times, the relations between the two countries, have seen immense cooperation," PM Modi said. The summit is being held a day after Vijay Diwas, marking India`s victory over Pakistan in the 1971 war that led to the creation of Bangladesh. "It is an honour for us to celebrate Bangladesh`s victory against the anti-liberation forces with you. When Bangladesh is celebrating 50 years of Independence, I would want to pay tribute to the martyrs of both nations, who sacrificed their lives," PM Modi added. Prime Minister Modi also thanked the Bangladeshi Prime Minister for inviting him for a visit to the nation next year where he said that "it would be an honour" to pay tribute "to the martyrs". India and Bangladesh have continued to maintain regular exchanges at the highest level with Bangladesh Prime Minister paying an official visit to India in October 2019. Prime Minister Modi had delivered a video message on the historic occasion of Mujib Borsho in March 2020. Both leaders have remained in regular touch during the COVID-19 pandemic. Bangladesh is commemorating the year 2020 as Mujib Borsho - the birth centenary of the father of the nation of Bangladesh - Sheikh Mujibur Rahman popularly known as Bangabandhu. Gravitas: A new chapter in India - Bangladesh ties

Facebook has removed two hacking groups operating from Bangladesh and Vietnam from its platform that were distributing malware and compromising people`s accounts across the Internet.

The Bangladesh-based group targeted local activists, journalists and religious minorities, including those living abroad, to compromise their accounts and have some of them disabled by Facebook for violating its Community Standards.

"Our investigation linked this activity to two non-profit organisations in Bangladesh: Don`s Team (also known as Defense of Nation) and the Crime Research and Analysis Foundation (CRAF). They appeared to be operating across a number of internet services," said Nathaniel Gleicher, Head of Security Policy, and Mike Dvilyanski, Cyber Threat Intelligence Manager at Facebook.

APT32, an advanced persistent threat actor based in Vietnam, targeted Vietnamese human rights activists locally and abroad, various foreign governments including those in Laos and Cambodia, non-governmental organisations, news agencies and a number of businesses with malware.

"Our investigation linked this activity to CyberOne Group, an IT company in Vietnam (also known as CyberOne Security, CyberOne Technologies, Hanh Tinh Company Limited, Planet and Diacauso)," Facebook said in a statement late on Thursday.

APT32 has deployed a wide range of adversarial tactics across the internet.

"The people behind these operations are persistent adversaries, and we expect them to evolve their tactics. However, our detection systems and threat investigators, as well as other teams in the security community, keep improving to make it harder for them to remain undetected," said Gleicher.

India-Bangladesh to relaunch defunct rail route

Last week Bangladesh started relocating Rohingya Refugees to Bhasan Char Island, despite of the objection raised by several international organisations. Now the country is facing big challenge to meet the basic needs of these refugees. WION brings you a report.

Bangladesh: Rohingya refugees happy with the facilities on Bhasan Char Island

The move has got international attention as the Bhasan Char island is considered vulnerable to tides and monsoonal river flows.

WION Dispatch: Bangladesh is sending Rohingya to their new home Bhasan Char island

1,600 Rohingya refugees now have a new home in Bangladesh's Bhasan Char, but some international organizations are slamming Bangladesh for relocating them.

Bangladesh begins transfer of Rohingyas to Bhasan Char Island

1,600 Rohingyas refugees now have a new home in Bangladesh's Bhasin Char, but some international organizations are slamming Bangladesh for relocating the Rohingyas. Should they be doing so? Molly Gambhir brings you a report.

Gravitas: Bangladesh relocates 1,600 Rohingya refugees

International organisations are slamming Bangladesh for relocating nearly 1600 Rohingya refugees from Cox's Bazar to the island of Bhasan Char. Are they right in doing so?

In 2017 after the Rohinga crackdown, Bangladesh welcomed the families that had fled genocide in Myanmar. 3 years on, when Bangladesh is trying to relocate them to a planned shelter should foreign agencies be complaining?

In Bangla, Bhasan Char means a floating island. At least 1,600 Rohingya refugees have sailed here from Chittagong, after a 160-km bus ride from Cox's Bazar where they have been camping for years.

The govt of Bangladesh has spent USD 12 million to develop infrastructure in Bhasan Char. It hopes that the island will eventually host 100,000 refugees. Shelters, dams, education and healthcare facilities have been set up for them.

But the efforts are not exactly being celebrated. Some international organisations say Rohingyas are being moved to Bhasan char without their consent. They are also pointing at the island's distance from the mainland.

The govt of Bangladesh maintains that despite being 21 miles from the mainland, Bhasan Char has sufficient facilities and livelihood options. Adding that the relocation is aimed at avoiding overcrowding in Cox's Bazar. What about the Rohingyas? Were they happy in leaving their Cox's Bazar shelters?

"We are not happy at the camps. If we go back to Myanmar, we may have our people but we don't have anything there to prove our citizenship. So, we didn't agree to go back. We heard from seniors as well as the television that we'll get much more facilities at Bhashan char," said Boni Adam, a Rohingya refugee

Cox's Bazar happens to be among Bangladesh's most vulnerable areas. The camps there have become unhygienic and unsafe. There is no planning, just abundant crime.

The situation has been worsened by contamination and mismanagement of water. The Bhasan Char, on the other hand, is well-santised, well-protected, and has abundant space. 700,000 Rohingyas fled myanmar in 2017 following a military-led genocide. Bangladesh has been hosting the refugees since.

In 2019, Bangladesh's foreign minister said - that his govt spends 3.6 billion dollars annually in providing for the Rohingyas.

Dhaka is now looking at improving the living conditions and also making their lives more sustainable. Should people on the outside be complaining? When those shifting homes aren't all that skeptical?

"The Bangladesh government has given us assurance of a better life there - they will give us a good environment, food and shelter - and so we are going there. In the Kutupalong camps, there are eight to ten lakh (800,000 to 1 million) people living in bad conditions, so crowded. So to get rid of that situation we are going," said a refugee.

There is a sense of a new beginning on the ground at Bhasan Char. Bangladesh will eventually let international organisations visit the island. Starting afresh is never easy, especially for a community that has seen so much and lost so much. But it is never too late.

Bangladesh: Sense of new beginning as Rohingyas head to Bhasan Char island

More than 1,600 Rohingya refugees sailed on Friday from Bangladesh`s southern port of Chittagong for the remote island of Bhasan Char in the Bay of Bengal, a naval official said.

The south Asian nation says it is only moving refugees who are willing to go and that this will ease chronic overcrowding in camps that are home to more than 1 million Rohingya, members of a Muslim minority who have fled neighbouring Myanmar.

But refugees and humanitarian workers say some of the Rohingya had been coerced into going to Bhashan Char a flood-prone island that emerged from the sea 20 years ago.

The naval official said the Rohingya were aboard seven boats, with two more carrying supplies.

Pictures taken from aboard one of the vessels showed refugees lined up on blue plastic chairs under the watch of uniformed sailors.

"The government is not taking anyone to Bhashan Char forcibly. We maintain this position," Foreign Minister Abdul Momen told reporters late on Thursday.

But two Rohingya being relocated told Reuters their names appeared on lists compiled by government-appointed local leaders without their consent, while aid workers said officials used threats and enticements to pressure people into going.

"They have taken us here forcefully," a 31-year-old man told Reuters tearfully by phone as he boarded a bus from the camps near Cox`s Bazar. "Three days ago, when I heard that my family is on the list, I ran away from the block, but yesterday I was caught and taken here," he said.

An 18-year-old woman said her husband had put their names on the list thinking it was for food rations. He fled when they were told to go to Bhasan Char, she said, adding that she is also hiding in the camp.

They were among more than 730,000 Rohingya who fled Myanmar in 2017 following a military-led crackdown that the United Nations said was executed with genocidal intent. Myanmar denies genocide and says its forces were targeting Rohingya militants who attacked police posts.

Human Rights Watch said it had interviewed 12 families whose names were on the lists, but had not volunteered to go, while Refugees International said the move was "nothing short of a dangerous mass detention of the Rohingya people in violation of international human rights obligations".

Two aid workers, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said refugees had come under pressure from government officials who used threats and offers of cash and other enticements to persuade them to go to the island.

The United Nations said in a statement it had been given "limited information" about the relocations and was not involved in preparations.

More than 300 refugees were brought to the island earlier this year after several months at sea in an attempt to flee Bangladesh. Rights groups say they are being held against their will and have complained of human rights violations.
