Bangladesh Home Affairs Adviser, Lieutenant General (retired) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, on Tuesday said that puja committees have been asked to turn off sound systems and avoid playing musical instruments during namaz and azan.

He further said that the organisers had agreed to the request.

"Such activities need to cease during offering namaz, and the pause will have to be followed from five minutes prior to azan," Chowdhury was quoted as saying by The Times of India on Tuesday.

The announcement was made after a meeting on the law and order situation in the country ahead of Durga Puja at the Dhaka Secretariat.

Bangladesh: Yunus govt asks Hindus to pause Durga Puja music during namaz and azan

The interim government in Bangladesh is set to scrutinise its deal with Indian conglomerate, Adani Group. The government, headed by Muhammad Yunus, is keen to know the terms of the 2017 agreement under which Adani Group exports power to Dhaka from its Jharkhand unit.

The government wants to know the terms and conditions of the agreement and if a fair price was being paid for availing the services.

“There will be scrutiny of Indian businesses, like the Adani business...what kind of contracts have been signed, what are the terms and conditions, one cannot have a foreign company not follow the law of the land,” a senior official of the interim government was quoted as saying by The Indian Express.

The official added that the decision to examine the Indian company should not be seen as 'painting a target' on such businesses.

"They will be scrutinised for what they are doing here, how much is Bangladesh paying, is it justified, all these questions will come up."

Bangladesh govt insists no change to national anthem amid 'India imposed' Amar Sonar Bangla claims

Bangladesh is all set to take necessary steps to extradite deposed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina from India in order to try her on charges of mass killings against her government, the newly-appointed chief prosecutor of the country's International Crimes Tribunal said.

Bangladesh vows necessary steps to extradite Sheikh Hasina from India

Bangladesh will take 'necessary steps' to secure the extradition of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina from India to try her on charges of mass killings, the newly appointed chief prosecutor of the country's International Crimes Tribunal (ICT), Mohammad Taijul, said on Sunday (Sep 8).

Hasina has sought refuge in the northern Indian city of Ghaziabad ever since fleeing Bangladesh as the demonstrators took over her official residence in the wake of the students' protest last month.

“Necessary steps will be taken to bring former prime minister Hasina back under the extradition treaty with India to try her on charges of mass killings during the student-led protests in July and August,” Taijul was quoted as saying by The Daily Star newspaper.

"We will file an application with the International Crimes Tribunal, when it resumes functions, to issue arrest warrants against all the accused, including Sheikh Hasina, in connection with the cases filed for mass killing and crimes against humanity," he added.

Last month, Bangladesh's ICT launched an investigation against Hasina and nine others on charges of genocide and crimes against humanity that took place between July and August during the peak of the students' protest against the 'unjust' quota system.

Taijul added that information, documents and evidence against the accused persons will be collected from across the country and compiled, examined and placed properly before the tribunal.

Yunus' hint

Yunus said Hasina "should keep quiet" and asked New Delhi to move beyond the “narrative” that every political party other than Hasina’s Awami League is “Islamist”.

“We want to extradite killers and bring back the money embezzled by corrupt individuals, politicians and bureaucrats during the autocratic regime," said Yunus.

Notably, Hasina has alleged that the United States engineered her ouster from power and appointed Yunus as a pawn after she refused to cede sovereignty of St. Martin Island, which would have given Washington control over the Bay of Bengal.

"I resigned so that I did not have to see the procession of dead bodies. They wanted to come to power over the dead bodies of students, but I did not allow it. I resigned from premiership," Hasina said.

"I could have remained in power if I had surrendered the sovereignty of Saint Martin Island and allowed America to hold sway over the Bay of Bengal. I beseech to the people of my land, please do not be manipulated by radicals," she added.

Washington and Dhaka had been at loggerheads for some time when Hasina was in power. The friction was evident when Hasina won a fourth straight term in January but the US State Department did not accept the results saying the polls were not free and fair.

Sheikh Hasina’s Ouster: Where does Bangladesh stand now?

Around 8,000 Rohingya Muslims have fled to Bangladesh in recent months, escaping escalating violence in Myanmar’s western Rakhine state, according to Bangladeshi officials.

The violence has intensified as fighting between Myanmar’s ruling janta and the Arakan Army, a powerful ethnic militia drawn from the Buddhist majority, continues to worsen.

"We have information that around 8,000 Rohingya crossed into Bangladesh recently, mostly over the last two months," said Mohammad Shamsud Douza, a senior official in charge of refugees for the Bangladeshi government.

"Bangladesh is already over-burdened and unable to accommodate any more Rohingya," he told Reuters on Wednesday.

The Bangladesh government has not previously provided any estimate of how many Rohingya have crossed over in the last few months.

The government will hold a "serious discussion at the cabinet” within the next two to three days to address the crisis, Bangladesh’s de-facto foreign minister, Mohammad Touhid Hossain, told reporters late on Tuesday.

While expressing sympathy for the Rohingya, Hossain said that the country no longer has the capacity to provide humanitarian shelter to additional refugees.

"It is not possible to fully seal the border,” he added, adding that efforts will be made to prevent further infiltration.

Tens of thousands of Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh held rallies in camps on August 25, marking the seventh anniversary of the 2017 military crackdown that forced them to flee Myanmar, demanding an end to violence and safe return to their homeland.

Over one million Rohingya currently live in overcrowded camps in southern Bangladesh, with little hope of returning to Myanmar, where they are largely denied citizenship and other basic rights.

The recent surge in violence is the worst the Rohingya have faced since the 2017 Myanmar military-led campaign, which the United Nations described as having genocidal intent.

Last month, Hossain told Reuters Bangladesh cannot accept more Rohingya refugees and called on India and other countries to take greater action.

He also urged the international community to apply more pressure on the Arakan Army to cease attacks on the Rohingya in Rakhine state.

UAE pardons Bangladesh citizens jailed for protesting against Sheikh Hasina

Pakistan Test team coach Jason Gillespie has admitted that Bangladesh are on top to win the second ongoing Test in Rawalpindi. Requiring 185 to win, Bangladesh were 42/0 at the close of play on day 4 (Monday, Sep 2) with one whole day left to get the remaining runs.

"Admittedly, the odds are probably in favour of Bangladesh," said Gillespie at the press conference after close of play on day 4.

Pakistan gave away advantage twice during the second Test, first when they were 107/1 in the first innings but were bowled out for 274 and second time when they allowed Bangladesh to score 262 in the first innings despite having them on the ropes at 26/6.

"We don't shy away from that, but we've already lost if we walk out there expecting to lose. We took 6 for 26 in the first innings so we know that we can have an impact with the ball if we bowl really well," the coach added.

Gillespie said that the bowlers need to make their execution right as they did in the first innings.

"We've spoken to our bowlers about being ruthless, being disciplined and bowling with intent," Gillespie said.

"And we just went away from our game plan and I've challenged the bowlers pretty strongly on that. We need to make sure that we're on each and every time, because Test cricket can get away from you. The opposition is very good and I'm not going to shy away from saying Bangladesh played well. No question. But I know that our bowlers can do better in that situation than what they showed and we just need to make sure that execution is absolutely bang on each and every time," he added.

Bangladesh won the first Test at the same venue by 10 wickets - their first Test win over Pakistan. If they manage to win the win the second Test as well, which seems as very real result, it'll be their first and historic Test series win for them.

Bangladesh's interim government led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus ordered the dismissal of two diplomats serving in neighbouring India amid a simmering bilateral state of restiveness between the two countries since August 5 when the deposed former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina left the country and took refuge at a military base outside New Delhi.

Shaban Mahmud, serving as First Secretary (Press) at the Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi was asked to resign before the end of his contract. Similarly, Ranjan Sen, serving in the same capacity at the Bangladeshi consulate in Kolkata, was also dismissed from his duties.

The interim government of Bangladesh was established amid a volatile political landscape that saw mass protests and violence directed against Sheikh Hasina and her ruling Awami League party.

On August 5, Hasina, aged 76, fled Bangladesh in a military helicopter to India as protesters overran the streets of Dhaka. Her 15-year rule came to a dramatic end. The weeks leading up to her ousting were bloody, with more than 450 dying during the unrest.

Despite Hasina's escape to India, Yunus has maintained that his government would continue to foster friendly relations with everyone.

The erstwhile Awami League government led by Hasina had imposed a ban on Jamaat on August 1, 2024, accusing the Islamist party as a “militant and terrorist” organisation. The government blamed Jamaat's student wing for inciting chaos over a quota system for government jobs.

The notification said the ban under the Anti-Terrorism Act 2009 has been lifted as there was no particular evidence against the organisation. The government believed that Jamaat and its associate bodies, including its student front Chhatra Shibir, were not involved in terrorist activities and violence.

The decision, formally published in a gazette notification on Wednesday, represents a significant change from the decision taken by the erstwhile Awami League government earlier this month, just days before its ouster.

The development came a day after Attorney General Mohammad Asaduzzaman urged the High Court to summarily reject a writ petition seeking an order on the government to ban Hasina's Awami League as a political party and scrap its registration.

"The current (interim) government has no intention to ban any political organisation,” the government's top law officer told a two-judge High Court bench, which set August 29 for its decision on the writ filed by one Sarda Society as a public interest litigation.

The interim government's law adviser, equivalent to a minister, Asif Nazrul on Wednesday told reporters he was opposed to the call for a ban on Awami League or any other political parties unless there was any strong evidence of their involvement in terrorist activities.

"Awami League is the party which led Bangladesh's independence movement and contributed to different democratic movements. (But) what they did in the past 15 years does not go with their heritage, the spirit of the Liberation War,” Nazrul said.

He said the party had established the "most barbaric fascism" in Bangladesh's history for which someone might have individual or its leaders might have collective responsibility “but I don't think it will be a wise decision to ban it as a political party”.

Secretary General of ex-premier Khaleda Zia's Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said that anyone should be able to form an independent political party, that is the main goal of democracy.

"We are not in favour of banning any political party; any party and any individual has the right to form an independent party. But they must be on the side of freedom and sovereignty. Those who do not believe in freedom cannot be supported," he said at a media briefing on Tuesday.

No senior leader of the Awami League, which ran the country for the past 15 years, is seen in the public domain while several ministers of Hasina's cabinet were arrested, on the run or believed to have fled the country since the ouster of the regime.

The Jamaat opposed Bangladesh's 1971 independence from Pakistan and sided with the Pakistani troops during the Liberation War.

The Jamaat, founded in 1941 in undivided India, was first banned in 1972, the year Bangladesh framed its Constitution, which disbanded the functioning of any association, union or political party based on religion.

But the subsequent military government led by General Ziaur Rahman revoked the ban by issuing a martial law proclamation, which allowed Jamaat to refloat and years later became a crucial partner of the then prime minister Khaleda Zia's 2001-2006 four-party alliance government. Two senior Jamaat leaders were inducted into her cabinet.

The Jamaat remained active despite losing its registration and being barred from elections due to court rulings.

The home ministry issued a gazette notification in this regard. “Since there is no specific evidence of involvement of Jamaat, Shibir, and its front… pic.twitter.com/wEHzLUdlHX — Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami (@BJI_Official) August 28, 2024 × The erstwhile Awami League government led by Hasina had imposed a ban on Jamaat on August 1, 2024, accusing the Islamist party as a “militant and terrorist” organisation.
