Violent clashes erupted between students and members of a Bangladeshi paramilitary auxilliary force near the Secretariat in Dhaka on Sunday night, leaving several injured from both sides. At least 50 people were injured in the clashes, The Daily Star reported. Why did the Ansar paramilitary force and students clash? The clashes began after 9:00 pm when students from Dhaka University marched to the Secretariat to confront Ansar members, whom they accused of being “agents of autocracy.” The clash got violent, prompting police to intervene in an attempt to restore order, Bangladeshi media reported. What is Ansar? Ansar is a paramilitary auxiliary force in the country. Their roles include helping government authorities with public security, participating in disaster management, supporting law enforcement, and aiding the armed forces. Earlier on Sunday, students gathered at the Raju Memorial Sculpture and headed towards the Secretariat following reports that Ansar members had detained Nahid Islam, an adviser in the interim government, and other coordinators of the Students Against Discrimination movement. 'Difficult to overcome mountain-like challenges overnight': Muhammad Yunus On Sunday, Bangladesh interim government’s Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus appealed to the people to have “patience” because it is difficult to address the “mountain-like challenges” Bangladesh is facing. In a televised address to the nation, his second since assuming charge on August 8 after the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government on August 5, Yunus said, “I’ll just say, you have to be patient. It is difficult to overcome mountain-like challenges overnight.” He also referred to the growing demands from various sections to punish those responsible for the deaths of many people during the anti-government protests. In a major concern for India’s national security, the caretaker government of Bangladesh on Monday (Aug 26) released the chief of an al-Qaeda-affiliated terrorist outfit. Jashimuddin Rahmani, the chief of the Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT), was released on parole on Monday, reported local media. He was jailed for the murder of a blogger back in 2013.

His ABT was outlawed in Bangladesh in 2015 under the regime of now-ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The radical outfit re-emerged as Ansar al-Islam in 2017 but was again banned by the Hasina government.

He was freed from the Kashimpur High-Security Central Jail in Gazipur.

On Sunday night, fresh and intense clashes broke out between students and members of Ansar, a paramilitary auxiliary force, near the Secretariat in Dhaka, Bangladesh. The Dhaka Tribune reports that the confrontation resulted in several injuries on both sides. This latest conflict comes despite Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina having left the country more than two weeks ago. Previously, the same university students had staged a month-long protest calling for the removal of controversial job reservations. However, this recent clash was not directed at the government but rather with the Ansar force, which was protesting for the nationalisation of their jobs.

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief Mohsin Naqvi has broken his silence on Pakistan's historic 10-wicket loss against Bangladesh at home in the first Rawalpindi Test. This is the first time Pakistan have lost by 10 wickets in a Test at home. It was also Bangladesh's first red-ball victory over Pakistan.

"I will fix the issues in Pakistan cricket, God willing. And changes are on the way," Naqvi said while talking to media.

It is to be noted that Naqvi had promised the same in the aftermath of recently-concluded T20 World Cup where they lost to host USA - a minnow team.

"Initially, I believed a minor surgery would suffice, but after this poor performance, it's clear that a major overhaul is needed. The nation will soon witness substantial changes,” Naqvi had said.

There, however, have been no changes so far, as the regular players are still very much part of the set-up, with most of them playing the first Test against Bangladesh as well.

Many of the former Pakistan players have criticised the PCB for failing to provide supportive pitch to the bowlers, especially after Pakistan opted for an all-pace attack - a rarity in the subcontinent.

Pakistan lost the Test by 10 wickets on day 5 after being bowled out for 146 in their second innings with most of their wickets falling to Bangladesh spinners.

In addition of that, the home team has also been fined for slow over rate as well. Pakistan were found six overs short, while Bangladesh were three overs short. The home team was fined 30 per cent match fee along with six WTC points.

The fines and point-deduction were in accordance with Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to minimum over-rate offences, players are fined five per cent of their match fee for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time.

Morning news brief: Bangladesh blame India for floods; NATO airbase raises security over threat; & more

As the massive floods in Bangladesh affected nearly 1.8 million people and resulted in five deaths, rumors began circulating, falsely blaming India’s opening of the Dumbur Dam on the Gumti River in Tripura for the deluge.

On Thursday (Aug 22), India firmly dismissed these allegations from Bangladesh, backing its stance with hardcore evidence.

"Concerns have been raised in Bangladesh that the current flooding in districts along the eastern border may be due to the opening of the Dumbur Dam upstream on the Gumti River in Tripura. However, this claim is factually incorrect," said the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).

The Gumti River flows through the northeastern Indian state of Tripura before entering Bangladesh. The Dumbur dam, located in Tripura, is situated more than 120 km upstream from the Bangladesh border, explained the MEA.

However, the flood that caused the havoc in Bangladesh was due to water from those large catchments downstream of the dam, it added.

It may be mentioned here, Bangladesh is currently going through a political crisis and has seen a rise in anti-India sentiments.

Violent protests forced Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to flee to India. A segment of the people in Bangladesh believes that India helped Hasina stay in power. Therefore spreading misinformation in such a situation becomes much easier for those with anti-India agendas.

New Delhi hits back

The MEA emphasised on bilateral cooperation and said floods in the common rivers between the two countries are a "shared" problem. And sufferings on people on both sides requires close mutual cooperation towards resolving it.

The MEA clarified that the catchment areas of the Gumti river, which flows through India and Bangladesh, have witnessed the heaviest rains of this year over the last few days.

The MEA stated that the flooding in Bangladesh was primarily due to water from the large catchment areas downstream of the dam.

The Dumbur dam is located quite far from the border -- more than 120 km upstream of Bangladesh -- the ministry said in a statement.

It further highlighted that the Dumbur dam, located over 120 km upstream of Bangladesh, is a low-height dam that generates power and supplies 40MW to Bangladesh.

"Along the about 120-km river course, we have three water-level observation sites at Amarpur, Sonamura and Sonamura 2," MEA said.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) reiterated that the two countries share 54 common cross-border rivers, making river-water cooperation a key aspect of their bilateral relationship.

"We remain committed to addressing issues and mutual concerns in water resources and river management through bilateral consultations and technical discussions," the ministry stated.

Notably, around 18 lakh people have been affected by floods in six districts of Bangladesh, the Dhaka-based Daily Star reported on Thursday, while 3 million people have been stranded in eight districts.

Meanwhile, social media in Bangladesh has been abuzz, with some users accusing India of causing the floods.

"For the first time in generations, Bangladesh's entire southeastern region is facing its worst flooding in history affecting millions of people. The cause? Indian authorities opened the gates of the Dumbur Reservoir in Tripura for the first time in three decades, releasing massive volumes of water into an already rain-soaked region," said a user.

"Could there have been flooding without India opening the Dumbur Reservoir gates? Perhaps yes, but on a significantly smaller scale. The sudden release of water from the dam has inundated the region to an extent it hasn't experienced in generations," another user added.

"India has created an artificial flood in Bangladesh by releasing water from its dams and you still wonder why people hate India so much?" said a third user on X.

(With inputs from agencies)

Bangladesh blames India for massive flooding; New Delhi responds

India's Tripura is battling severe floods. At least 23 people have been killed, 65,000 people have been displaced. On the other side of the border, several districts of Bangladesh too are inundated.

Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has had nine more cases filed against her, increasing the total number of cases to 31. Watch in for more details!

Bangladesh: Nine new cases registered against ousted PM Sheikh Hasina

Bangladesh's interim government revoked the diplomatic passport of ousted premier Sheikh Hasina on Thursday, after she fled to India earlier this month following a student-led uprising.

The move to cancel Hasina's documents leaves the former autocratic leader in potential limbo, and comes on the same day that a United Nations team arrived in Dhaka to assess whether to investigate alleged human rights violations.

More than 450 people were killed -- many by police fire -- during the weeks leading up to Hasina's ouster, as crowds stormed her official residence in Dhaka and ended her iron-fisted 15-year rule.

The interior ministry said in a statement that Hasina's passport and those belonging to former government ministers and ex-lawmakers no longer in their posts "have to be revoked".

It also poses a diplomatic dilemma for Hasina's current host, regional powerhouse India.

Disproportionate force

Hasina, who fled to an airbase near India's capital, New Delhi, had been a close ally of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, whose government preferred her over her rivals from the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, which it saw as closer to conservative Islamist groups.

While India is hosting Hasina, Modi has also offered his support to the new Bangladeshi leader, Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, who is heading the caretaker administration.

"The former prime minister, her advisers, the former cabinet and all members of the dissolved national assembly were eligible for diplomatic passports by virtue of the positions they held," Dhaka's home ministry said in a statement.

"If they have been removed or retired from their posts, their and their spouses' diplomatic passports have to be revoked."

Dhaka's new authorities said that Hasina, and other former top officials during her tenure, could apply for a standard passport, but that those documents were contingent on approval.

"When the aforementioned people apply afresh for ordinary passports, two security agencies have to clear their application for their passports to be issued," the ministry added.

Hasina's government was accused of widespread abuses, including the mass detention and extrajudicial killing of political opponents.

Bangladesh: Yunus-led interim govt cancels diplomatic passport of ex-PM Hasina

Amid tensions and turmoil, social media in Bangladesh is filled with stories blaming India for causing floods in the country. There are claims that sudden floods in Bangladesh result from India opening a dam. However, the Indian government clarified on Thursday that the flooding in eastern districts of Bangladesh was not caused by the opening of a dam on the Gumti River in Tripura. This raises the question of who is spreading these lies. Who is spreading the anti-India propaganda against India in Bangladesh?

A three square kilometre stretch of land, St Martin's Island in the northeastern part of the Bay of Bengal, has emerged as the point of focus in the ongoing Bangladesh crisis that led to the fall of Sheikh Hasina's government earlier this week.

The ousted former Bangladeshi prime minister claimed that she could have remained in power had she given away St Martin's to the United States.

Ahead of the elections in Bangladesh in January this year, Hasina had claimed that "a white man" had offered her a smooth return to power in exchange for an airbase.

Last year, while addressing a press conference in Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina said, "I don’t want to return to power by leasing out St Martin’s Island."

For several years, the rumours of Washington wanting to control the island have been doing the rounds in and beyond Dhaka's corridors of power.

As per reports, Muhammad Yunus, the chief adviser of Bangladesh’s interim government, pledged publicly in Dhaka on Sunday to hold elections. But there’s a catch—Yunus insists that a ‘free, fair, and participatory’ election can only occur after the interim government completes its ‘mandate’ to implement what he describes as ‘vital reforms.’

Bangladesh: The 'forever' government of Dhaka

Bangladesh Nationalist Party on Tuesday (Aug 20) urged India to extradite ex-prime minister Sheikh Hasina so that she can face trial for ‘plotting to thwart the country's revolution.’ Hasina quit as prime minister and fled Bangladesh on August 5 after the Bangladesh Army refused to implement her curfew orders.

"It is our call to you that you should hand her over to the government of Bangladesh in a legal way. The people of this country have given the decision for her trial. Let her face that trial," said BNP Secretary-General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.

The BNP official also accused India of shying away from fulfilling its commitment towards democracy by providing refuge to Hasina. "Staying there, she has started various plots to thwart the revolution that happened in Bangladesh," he alleged.

Another case filed against Hasina

Meanwhile, a fresh complaint was filed against Hasina on Tuesday with the International Crimes Tribunal, accusing the former PM and 23 others of committing genocide and human rights violations during a 2013 Islamist rally.

Local newspaper ‘The Daily Star’ reported that Mufti Harun Ijahar Chowdhury, joint secretary general of Hefajat-e-Islam, filed the case against Hasina.

"We registered the complaint, and thus the investigation has started from today," Ataur Rahman, deputy director of the investigation agency, was quoted as saying by the newspaper.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has changed the 2024 Women's T20 World Cup from Bangladesh to the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The decision comes amid unrest and ousting of the government in Bangladesh. The tournament, however, is scheduled to be played on original dates from October 3-20.

The tournament will be hosted across two venues: Sharjah and Dubai, announced the ICC on Tuesday (Aug 20). The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), meanwhile, will continue to host the event, just now in the UAE.

“It is a shame not to be hosting the Women’s T20 World Cup in Bangladesh as we know the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) would have staged a memorable event,” ICC Chief Executive Geoff Allardice said in a statement.

“I’d also like to thank the Emirates Cricket Board for stepping in to host on behalf of the BCB and Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe for their generous offers of support, and we look forward to seeing ICC global events in both of those countries in 2026,” the statement added.

Ever since the former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina-led government was toppled, the country has been in the midst of political turmoil despite an interim government being named by the Bangladesh Army.

The ICC has been monitoring the situation since the beginning and has even approached the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) as a potential replacement. BCCI secretary Jay Shah had categorically rejected the idea though.

"They [ICC] have asked us if we would conduct the World Cup. I have categorically said no," Jay Shah said to the Times of India, as quoted by ESPNcricinfo. "We're in the monsoon, and on top of that, we will host the Women's ODI World Cup next year. I don't want to give any kind of signals that I want to hold consecutive World Cups.”

Some of the participating countries, including India, Australia, and the UK, had already issued advisories against travelling to Bangladesh amid the unrest.

Bangladesh's interim government chief Muhammad Yunus on Sunday (August 18) did not provide any timeline for the promised "free and fair elections" in the South Asian nation and instead emphasised that he has the "mandate" of carrying out "vital reforms" in the country.

The Nobel laureate accused deposed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina of destroying every institution of the country in her efforts to stay in power. He repeated the promise of holding a free, fair, and participatory election but did not give any timeline for the same.

Deposed former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina returned to power in January elections widely denounced by the Opposition for its alleged lack of participatory nature alongside purported high-handedness of government functionaries from Hasina's Awami League party.

Hasina, 76, resigned and fled to India on August 5 following a massive protest by students against a controversial quota system in government jobs.

After Hasina's ouster, 84-year-old Yunus took oath as the Chief Adviser of the interim government on August 8.

The chief adviser said elections were rigged blatantly and generations of young people grew up without exercising their voting rights.

“Banks were robbed with full political patronisation. And the State coffer was plundered by abusing power,” Yunus said, adding that they will also make sincere efforts to promote national reconciliation.

"In their efforts to stay in power, Sheikh Hasina's dictatorship destroyed every institution of the country. The judiciary was broken. Democratic rights were suppressed through a brutal decade-and-a-half long crackdown," United News of Bangladesh quoted Yunus as saying through his Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam.

Yunus also briefed diplomats stationed in Dhaka for the first time since the interim government's inception.

Yunus said he took over a country that was in many ways a complete mess. He added that the top priority of the interim government would be to bring the law and order situation under control.

"We will be close to normalcy within a short period, with the unwavering support of our people and patriotic armed forces," Yunus said.

He sought the international community’s support to rebuild Bangladesh.

On the Rohingya issue, he said the interim government will continue to support the million-plus Rohingya people sheltered in Bangladesh.

"We need sustained efforts of the international community for Rohingya humanitarian operations and their eventual repatriation to their homeland, Myanmar, with safety, dignity and full rights," Yunus said.
