Bangladesh To Hold Talks On News Reforms

<p>Bangladesh sports advisor Asif Mahmud has said that all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan will be provided security upon his return to the country but he has to make his political stance clear. This comes after Shakib recently said that he'd like to play his last Test at home next month if given the security.</p>

<p>The need for security arises after Awami League government was toppled in Bangladesh post violent protests and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina fled the country in the last couple of months. Shakib was also a Member of Parliament from the same party. After Hasina's ouster, he has also been named in an FIR along with 146 people for a murder.</p>

<p>"The state is bound to give security to each citizen, so we will obviously [provide him with security]. In Shakib's case, we have to remember that he has two identities - the cricketer and the politician. He took part in the general elections from Awami League. People have mixed reactions regarding both his identities. Now we will give Shakib, the player, enough security, as much as a sportsperson. This is our responsibility. We will give him [security] if he comes to the country."</p>

<p>"The public could however be angry at him for his political identity. If half the country's population is angry at me, then the five or six security persons I have won't be enough to protect me. Shakib can however reduce the public's anger through his own words. I think he has to clarify his political standpoint. [Former Bangladesh captain and MP] Mashrafe Mortaza already talked about his situation. So if there are security risks from the people, then no one can give security to anyone. Even [then prime minister] Sheikh Hasina could not be provided the security, she had to flee the country. So Shakib has to make his political stance clear," said Mahmud.</p>

<p>Bangladesh has resumed its export of Hilsa fish to India, allowing for the shipment of 3,000 tonnes ahead of the festive season.</p>

<p>Recently, 45 tonnes of this prized white-fleshed fish arrived in Kolkata, drawing hundreds of locals to the Howrah wholesale fish market. This export comes in response to the heightened demand during the Durga puja celebrations, a major Hindu festival celebrated in Kolkata, where Hilsa holds cultural significance.</p>

<p>Earlier this month, the interim government in Bangladesh, led by Muhammad Yunus, imposed a ban on Hilsa exports due to political turmoil. However, after negotiations and requests from Indian fish traders, the government lifted the ban to meet local demand.</p>

<p>The decision to export 3,000 tonnes aims to stabilise prices, which had skyrocketed from Rs 1,200 to Rs 2,000 per kilogram in India due to the previous ban, causing a significant impact on consumers. Fish sellers had also voiced concerns over rising pressures.</p>

<p>Mohammad Zeeshan Alam, a fish seller, spoke to AFP and said, "The ban has had a huge impact on business. Earlier, when fish used to come in large quantities, the prices were lower, so customers would buy in slightly larger amounts. Now, with limited supply and higher prices, only a few people are able to purchase."</p>

<p>Hilsa fish is a culinary favourite and an essential part of cultural traditions on both sides of the India-Bangladesh border. The fish, known as the national fish of Bangladesh, plays a pivotal role in trade and diplomacy between the two nations.</p>

Bangladeshi Hilsa is famous because there is a difference in taste compared to Indian Hilsa. Muhammad Yunus, the leader of Bangladesh’s interim government, faced massive protests Tuesday (Sep 25) in New York for attacks on minorities in his home country following the collapse of the Sheikh Hasina regime in August. The protests took place outside the hotel where he is staying, with people chanting “go back” and “step down”. #WATCH | New York, US: Bangladeshi nationals gather outside the hotel where Head of Bangladesh's interim government, Mohammad Yunus has arrived and chant slogans against him over attacks on minorities in their country. pic.twitter.com/GPSoQPg8Dv — ANI (@ANI) September 24, 2024 × Yunus is visiting the United States to attend the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) session. ‘Dirty politics’ According to protestors, Yunus came to power with dirty politics. They were also sloganeering in favour of now-deposed PM Hasina, chanting, “Sheikh Hasina our Prime Minister”. “Muhammad Yunus took the power unconstitutionally, illegally. He captured power with dirty politics, and a lot of people have been killed. So far, our elected PM, Sheikh Hasina, has not resigned. We request UN humbly that he did not represent Bangladeshi people here,” one of the protesters was quoted as saying by news agency ANI. “I am here to protest the illegal, unelected person representing 117 million people of Bangladesh...He is not elected, he has been appointed by students. He doesn't care about minorities or anybody...He has illegally occupied the country,” a second protester said. Attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh Yunus took charge as the head of the South Asian country’s interim government on August 8 after Hasina tendered her resignation and fled the country following riots that erupted over a controversial quota system. After Hasina’s government collapsed, attacks on minorities, especially Hindus, saw a dramatic rise under the Yunus government’s watch. Reports have emerged alleging that Hindus are being threatened against celebrating Durga Puja whereas Hindu officials are being pressed into opting for early retirement. According to media reports, miscreants have threatened Hindus to disrupt their Durga Puja celebrations unless they pay 5 lakh taka ($4,100). Such letters have been sent to the leaders of various puja celebration committees. As a result of these threats, some Hindus have already cancelled Durga Puja celebrations. India has made several appeals to the Yunus government to address security concerns raised by Hindus but to no avail. (With inputs from agencies)

Such is the scale of the attacks, that in at least 48 of Bangladesh's 64 districts, there have been reports of incidents against Hindus.
