Adani Indictment: Bangladesh To Review Adani Power Projects Amid Bribery Allegations | WION News

Bangladesh is losing an alarming $355 million in tax revenues each year due to corporate profit shifting and tax evasion by individuals, particularly through the use of offshore tax havens. According to the State of Tax Justice 2024 report, corporations account for the largest share of the losses, shifting $335.9 million abroad, while $19.1 million is lost to individuals evading taxes by holding wealth in foreign properties.&nbsp;

This loss represents 21.4% of Bangladesh's annual health expenditures.

The report also highlights an alarming $492 billion in tax losses each year resulting from income underreporting and tax haven use by multinational corporations and rich individuals. Almost half of these losses are facilitated by eight countries: Australia, Canada, Israel, Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, the UK, and the US.

Bangladesh's Struggling Revenue System and Moody's Downgrade

Widespread&nbsp;tax evasion and irregularities&nbsp;have&nbsp;contributed&nbsp;to&nbsp;Bangladesh's fiscal&nbsp;problems.&nbsp;Bangladesh&nbsp;tried&nbsp;to reduce&nbsp;corporate tax rates to attract investment,&nbsp;but&nbsp;its&nbsp;corporate&nbsp;multinationals&nbsp;shifted&nbsp;all their potential&nbsp;profits abroad&nbsp;--&nbsp;a&nbsp;record&nbsp;of&nbsp;$1.3 billion&nbsp;last&nbsp;year&nbsp;alone.

This tax revenue shortfall coincides with Bangladesh's broader economic struggles, as highlighted by a recent downgrade by Moody's. The downgrade&nbsp;resulted&nbsp;from&nbsp;increasing&nbsp;political risks,&nbsp;poor&nbsp;growth&nbsp;outlooks, and a&nbsp;worsening&nbsp;law and order situation. While the immediate impact on the economy may be limited, experts warn that it could lead to higher borrowing costs and more stringent credit reviews for businesses, affecting both local and foreign investments.

The downgrade is a big setback for Bangladesh in consolidating its steps to stabilise the economy and attract foreign investment. Experts feared that the downgrade could increase the cost of doing business significantly, particularly with regard to international trade, and further difficulties in accessing financing. Confirmation charges for letters of credit may increase, and the overall climate for FDI will suffer due to the lack of political stability perceived.

Although the interim government has initiated reforms, the absence of a clear election roadmap and the ongoing political uncertainty raise concerns among international investors. Until these issues are addressed, experts predict a continued struggle to boost investment and stabilise the economy.

Bangladesh’s Attorney General calls to remove "secular" from the constitution amid growing attacks on religious minorities. Protesters demand action as the country grapples with political unrest and violence.

Bangladesh’s Secularism Under Attack? Attorney General Pushes for Change

The Attorney General of Bangladesh, Md Asaduzzaman, called for the removal of the term "secular" from the nation’s Constitution, saying that "90 per cent of the population was Muslim."

Asaduzzaman also asked for&nbsp;change in the title given to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, who is known as the “Father of the Nation.”

During a court session on the 15th Amendment's legality, overseen by Justices Farah Mahbub and Debashish Roy Chowdhury, Asaduzzaman said that constitutional changes should strengthen democracy rather than encourage authoritarianism.

<h2>'I want it the way it was before'</h2>

The Attorney General said that these amendments “would align the Constitution with the country’s democratic and historical ethos.”

He added, “Earlier, there was constant trust and faith in Allah. I want it the way it was before. It is said in Article 2A that the state shall ensure equal rights and equality in the practice of all religions. Article 9 talks about 'Bengali nationalism'. It is contradictory.”

<h2>'Honouring&nbsp;Sheikh Mujib is vital, but...'</h2>

Asaduzzaman also requested the removal of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s official title as "Father of the Nation," arguing that it contributes to national divisions and limits freedom of speech.

He said, “Honouring the contributions of Sheikh Mujib is vital, but enforcing it by law creates division.”

He also criticised Articles 7A and 7B, which prohibit constitutional changes that might "subvert democracy," arguing that these articles limit democratic reforms and concentrate power. "It is done to prolong the dictatorship for ulterior motives. It is antithetical to the rule of law," he said.

Asaduzzaman demanded the revocation of the 15th Amendment, adding that it disrupts Bangladesh’s independence legacy and conflicts with the "spirit of the Liberation War" and the democratic movements of the 1990s.

Earlier this month, hundreds gathered in Dhaka, demanding protection for Hindus and other minorities who have faced violence and threats following Sheikh Hasina’s departure from office in August.

"It's deeply regrettable that the council of advisors does not acknowledge the suffering minorities have endured. I have witnessed the atrocities against them—their temples, businesses, and homes," Hindu leader Charu Chandra Das Brahmachari told AFP.

The interim government under Muhammad Yunus has condemned these attacks on Hindus, but it also said that many incidents were politically motivated rather than religiously driven. Hindus, who make up around 8% of Bangladesh’s nearly 170 million population, have experienced more than 2,000 attacks since August 4, according to the Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian&nbsp;Unity&nbsp;Council.

Bangladesh's Interim Government Labels Awami League 'Fascist'

Terming Awami League as "fascist", Bangladesh's interim government on Saturday (Nov 9)&nbsp;said it will not permit the deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina's party to hold Sunday's planned rally.

Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus's press secretary Shafiqul Alam in a Facebook post said that the interim government won't tolerate any violence or any attempt to break the law and order situation in the country.

“The Awami League in its current form is a fascist party. There is no way this fascist party will be allowed to hold protests in Bangladesh,” he said.

Alam further cautioned that “anyone who would try to hold rally, gathering and processions by taking orders from the mass murderer and dictator Sheikh Hasina will face full force of the law enforcing agencies”.

Alam's statement followed a call from the Awami League on its verified Facebook page, urging supporters to gather at Shaheed Noor Hossain Chattar, or Zero Point, in Gulistan on Sunday to protest what they described as “misrule.”

"Our protest is against the deprivation of the rights of the people of the country; our protest is against the rise of fundamentalist forces; our protest is against the conspiracy to disrupt the lives of the common people," read the Facebook post.

This was the first call for a rally by the Awami League since August 5, when Hasina fled to India amid a mass student-led uprising against her government.

Awami League also urged party men to stage rallies at grassroots levels across the country on Sunday in line with "the spirit of the call" as described in the Facebook post.

The protest venue, Shaheed Noor Hossain Chattar, holds historical significance, as it was where Awami League youth leader Noor Hossain was killed on November 10, 1987, during a demonstration against the autocratic rule of the then military dictator General HM Ershad.

The interim government earlier banned Awami League's student front Bangladesh Chhatra League over allegations of its “fascist role” during and before the July-August Anti-Discrimination Students Movement.

Initially launched as a campaign for job quota reforms, the student-led movement intensified into a mass protest that ultimately led to the fall of the Hasina government.

While several political factions have called for the Awami League to be banned, Yunus said such a decision is up to political parties. Some ministers of the interim government also oppose the ban, emphasising political inclusivity. Awami League's main rival Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) led by former prime minister Khaleeda Zia also opposed banning any political party.
