On Monday, Australia approved the Pfizer-BioNTech coronavirus vaccine for use. Australia's Prime Minister Scott Morrison on Monday said that the country's medical regulator was among the first globally to finish the approval of Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine.&nbsp;

He added that it has been a year since the first local case was detected in the country.

The country is expected to begin vaccinations using Pfizer shot in late February. It is expected to begin with 80,000 doses per week, as stated by country's Health Minister Greg Hunt.&nbsp;The country's medical regulator added how AstraZeneca's production issues imply that the country would be required to distribute a locally manufactured jab earlier than anticipated.

Earlier, Pfizer told Australian government that it expected continuous supply but would provide global production guidance "in mid-February for March and beyond on a weekly basis".

AstraZeneca officials on Friday told the European Union that it would cut deliveries of its vaccines by 60 per cent in the first quarter due issues in production.

AstraZeneca had told Australia that the company has "had a significant supply shock and so that means we won't have as much of that AstraZeneca international in March as they had previously promised"

The need for survival is capable of pushing humans to the extreme, philosophers say. It seems like a fitting thing to say about an Australian man who recently survived or 18 days on mushrooms and dam water.

The man had been missing for 18 days, after which Australia launched search efforts. Robert Weber, the 58-year-old man in question went missing in the Australian state of Queensland. This week, search for him was called off.

According to the police, Weber was found near a dam on Sunday by a "property owner".

After being found by authorities, Weber was "suffering exposure to the elements", but was otherwise in good condition.

Before Sunday, Weber was seen leaving a hotel in the Australian town of Kilkivan, along with his dog on January 6. Soon after, his car got stuck in the dirt.

Reportedly, Weber spent three days in his car after which he ran out of water, forcing him to go on foot.

After setting off into the night, Weber got lost but still remained near a dam where he survived by eating mushrooms, drinking dam water, and sleeping on the ground.

An air and ground search was conducted to find his whereabouts but to no avail. Even then, residents were urged to keep an eye out for Weber.

Weber was found by a local Member of Parliament Tony Perrett on Sunday. He was kilometres (almost 2 miles) away from where his car was found.

As Australia is thinking of negotiating payments for news media companies, the search engine <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/google">Google</a> has threatened to remove its search engine in the country if the code is introduced.

Google believes the proposal by the Australian government sets a "dangerous precedent" as the code will be hiding — or worse, removing — news websites from search results of Australian locals in order to push news outlets to pay in order to be able to link news articles in search results.

However, this decision has not gone well with the search engines, especially Google. The internet giant has decided to pull down the entire function from Australia, under a sign of protest and disagreement with this decision.

"The principle of unrestricted linking between websites is fundamental to search and coupled with the unmanageable financial and operational risk is this version of the code were to become law, it would give us no real choice but to stop making Google Search available in Australia", said Mel Silva, Google's managing director.

She also added that while this is not a favourable move, the company is not left with much choice. "Withdrawing our services from Australia is the last thing that Google want to have happen, especially when there is another way forward," Silva said.

Google has also claimed that while they are thinking of taking this decision, the company is ready to strike deals with media companies and has already struck nearly 450 deals with a few media companies.

The decision was Google has not pleased the Senate as they feel this is almost like China threatening Australia's trade as a tit-for-tat against coronavirus. "It’s about breaking your bank account, that’s what this is about," said independent senator Rex Patrick. "It does not touch the internet and the way in which it works."

Prime Minister Scott Morrison, in response to Google's statement, said, "Australia makes our rules for things you can do in Australia. That’s done in our parliament. It’s done by our government. And that’s how things work here in Australia."&nbsp;

Last week, 29 people died after being administered Pfizer-BioNtech coronavirus vaccine in Norway. Following the incident, the Australian Health Minister has demanded detailed information of the incident on an urgent basis.

Greg Hunt, the Australian minister, said the Therapeutic Goods Administration will ask for "additional information, both from the company, but also from the Norwegian medical regulator".

This statement came after a local Australian media house reported that the Norwegian Medicines Agency (NOMA) has claimed that there is a possibility the deaths could have been caused due to side effects of the vaccination, which can include fever and nausea.

However, it also added that since Norway has been vaccinating the elderly with underlying diseases, it may also have been a huge factor. &nbsp;

"Therefore it is expected that deaths close to the time of vaccination may occur," the agency said in a statement.

After the deaths, the Norwegian authorities had warned the world against vaccinating the elderly and critically ill population.

Pfizer, on the other hand, has claimed there were no concerns raised in their private investigation of the matter.&nbsp;

"Overall, there were no safety signals of concern identified in our clinical trials, including no signal of serious allergic reactions associated with the vaccine," the pharmaceutical company said in a statement.

As of now, Australia has agreed to buy 10 million doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine.

An Australian father and son have been released after almost six months in detention on unknown charges in Qatar, multiple sources said Sunday.

Professor Lukman Thalib, 58, and his son Ismail Talib, 24, were reportedly arrested in the Qatari capital Doha by local authorities in July.

The pair have been released from Qatari custody,&nbsp;said a Doha-based source briefed on the case, who added that they flew to Turkey on January 5.

UK-based human rights organisation CAGE said they travelled there to receive medical treatment.

"As a family we were overwhelmed with joy when we heard my father and brother were being released. We really couldn't believe it," Maryam Talib, the daughter of Professor Thalib, said in a statement released by CAGE.

CAGE said the men had been held in solitary confinement and subjected to sleep deprivation during their detention.

Maryam Talib said the family still had "many unanswered questions", including&nbsp;why Canberra provided "little" support during the ordeal.

"We have still not received any formal allegations or justification for what has happened," she said.

Australia's foreign ministry said in a statement that it had "provided consular assistance to two Australian men who had been detained in Qatar" but declined to comment further.

The Qatari government has also been approached for comment.

In October, the US Department of the Treasury designated another son of Professor Thalib, Ahmed Luqman Talib, as a "facilitator" of Al-Qaeda, along with that son's gemstone company, Talib and Sons PTY LTD.

No charges have publicly been brought against Ahmed Luqman Talib.

His father was listed on the directory of Qatar University's College of Health Sciences as a professor of public health specialising in biostatistics.

CAGE said the released men planned to spend time recuperating in Turkey before returning to Australia.

Australian skipper Tim Paine has been fined 15 per cent of match fee for expressing his dissent at the umpire's dissent after a failed review during the Day 3 of the third Test as the SCG, the International Cricket Council (ICC) said on Sunday.

According to ICC, Paine breached article 2.8 of the ICC Code of Conduct -- which relates to showing dissent during an international match -- and one demerit point was added to his disciplinary record.

It happened in the 56th over of India's first innings on Saturday after Paine was confident that Pujara edged a Nathan Lyon delivery to Matthew Wade at short leg, but on-field umpire Paul Wilson ruled not out. It happened in the 56th over of India's first innings on Saturday after Paine was confident that Pujara edged a Nathan Lyon delivery to Matthew Wade at short leg, but on-field umpire Paul Wilson ruled not out. The wicketkeeper (Paine) was quick to review the decision, however, DRS ruled it in favor of the batsman due to no evidence on Snicko or HotSpot. Australian bowlers are countering Cheteshwar Pujara`s patience with patience in the ongoing series against India with fast bowler Pat Cummins revealing that they have planned to frustrate him and the Indian batting by drying up his run-scoring even if it requires bowling 200-300 balls in an innings at him.

Cummins`s spell of four for 29 in India`s first innings of the third Test on Saturday included the wicket of Pujara, who had scored three centuries on way to aggregating 521 runs at 74.5 on the previous tour in 2018-19 and had earned man of the series award. This time though, the India No. 3 has struggled and made just 113 runs in five innings so far at an average of 22.6.

"You know he is going to hang around a bit. As long you are controlling the scoreboard... if we continue to keep bowling well and field tightly, we are not overly bothered," Cummins told reporters after the match.

"I think we have got ahead of him in this series. For him to score runs we are going to make it as hard as possible. Whether he bats for 200, 300 balls we try and bowl good ball after good ball, challenge both sides of his bat. Fortunately it has worked so far," Cummins added.

The Australia pacer, who is ranked No. 1 in the world, recalled a stage from the third day`s play on Saturday when he looked up at the scoreboard only to find to his pleasure that India have not moved.

"I think at one stage he had been out there for 150 balls or so. I remember looking up at the scoreboard and saying they are still 200 runs away from our first innings total. So that fell a long away," added Cummins.

Cummins`s wicket of Pujara came in the second session as the Aussie pacer bowled a back-of-the-length delivery that reared up from a wicket that was deteriorating. He says he was lucky to get the ball to jump.

"For that one today, I seemed to get assistance from the pitch. It seemed to jump up a little but he is someone you know you have to bowl a lot at," added the India top-order batsman.

Cummins said he was hoping at the start they don`t have a long day and was happy to see Indian bowlers bowl three days in a row.

"At the start of the day, I was hoping that we don`t end the day still having to bowl. With a 200-run lead, eight wickets in hand with the wicket deteriorating quickly, it is a great result. Also getting their bowlers back on, they have now bowled three days in a row, those things all add up," added Cummins.

The Aussie pace bowler added that he is bowling with a good rhythm and has great control on the ball.

"It is right up there, the rhythm feels really good. It just feels like I have got pretty good control not just on where the ball is landing but I guess the seam movement as well. I feel like I have beaten them in and out a lot more than I have in the past. Hopefully this continues," he said.

Australia reveal success mantra against Pujara: Wear out his patience

Australia has been put on high alert again after cases of new variants of coronavirus were spotted in the country. The new variants, from Britain and South Africa are considered more infectious than the original strain from China.

A strict three-day long lockdown was imposed in Queensland's capital Brisbane after one of the new strains was spotted in the city. While Queensland has the strain from Britain, Australia's largest city - Sydney has the South African variant.&nbsp;

Compared to other advanced economies, Australia has done a better job of tackling the pandemic. Currently, the total infections in the country stand at 28,600, with 909 deaths.&nbsp;

At some point in the last few months, every state has recorded zero cases of coronavirus.

The new variants of the virus have forced the government to reimpose strict measures against the spread of new variants. On Friday, the government cut down the number of travellers coming in from overseas. In addition, negative coronavirus tests are now mandatory for people coming into the country, with more testing to follow at local quarantine centres.

"So long as people are travelling, the risk of the virus seeping into the community is already there," New South Wales Premier Gladys Berejiklian said during a news conference.

"Anything we can do to reduce that risk is really important, especially now when we understand what these strains are doing, and all the experts advise in due course that these mutated strains will become the dominant strain", Berejiklian added.

In March 2020, the country closed its borders, and slowly allowed a limited number of citizens to return. Upon returning, all of them were put into a mandatory two-week hotel quarantine.

Australia on high alert after registering cases of new variants from Britain, South Africa

Cricket fans attending the Australian Indian test match at the Sydney Cricket Ground went to various lengths to follow a mandatory mask order on Thursday (January 7).

Australia on Thursday ended Day 1 of the third Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground on high as the hosts posted 166/2 with star batsmen Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne well settled&nbsp;at the crease.&nbsp;&nbsp;

In what was a rain-hit start to the first day of the Sydney Test, Australia won the toss and opted to bat first. The Sydney pitch, which has a tinge of grass, looked great for batting but also assisted the seamers early on.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Continuing his great start in the Test arena, Indian pacer Mohammed Siraj, who made his Test debut in Melbourne,&nbsp;dismissed Aussie opener, David Warner, for five as the southpaw edged one straight to&nbsp;Cheteshwar&nbsp;Pujara in the slip cordon.&nbsp;&nbsp;

However, as the pitch settled, it became easier for the batsmen with debutant Will&nbsp;Pucovski&nbsp;and Marnus Labuschagne stitching a 100-run stand for the hosts. While&nbsp;Pucovski&nbsp;was dropped twice by Rishabh Pant, the elegant batsman went on to register his maiden half-century to become the 82nd&nbsp;Australian to score a fifty in Test debut. The youngster was trapped plumb by another debutant Navdeep Saini as the quick, angled-in delivery did the job for the visitors.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Steve Smith, who is going through a lean patch, played with intent and ended the day on 31 with Labuschagne scoring an unbeaten 67 to end the day.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Indian bowlers bowled well but the dropped catches and a flat and&nbsp;slowish&nbsp;Sydney track didn’t help their case much.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“I'm good, nice to spend a bit of time out there, nice to stitch in a partnership with Marnus. I wanted to put him (Ashwin) under a little bit of pressure which I haven't done this series. Was just trying to hold the grip a bit tighter, I've been struggling, so I was getting into good positions today. Was good to get a couple of boundaries early. Marnus played well, hopefully, we go along well tomorrow,” said Smith at the end of Day 1 in Sydney.&nbsp;

With an early start set for Friday, India would be looking to pick some quick wickets and put pressure on the Aussies. Whereas Australia would be hoping that Smith and Labuschagne&nbsp;register a big partnership.&nbsp;

A naked fugitive hiding out in trees above crocodile-infested waters has been discovered by a pair of fishermen. It's being said he survived on snails in swampy mangroves in Australia's far north.

Kevin Joiner and Cam Faust found the naked man, covered in mud and mosquito bites calling for help, on Sunday afternoon while fishing near Darwin.

"We thought he just must have had a big night after New Year's ... and done himself a mischief in the bush," they said.

The man was dehydrated and needed help, so the pair took him aboard, offered him a pair of shorts, a beer and drove him back to Darwin.

But once the man arrived at the hospital, police placed him under arrest for allegedly skipping bail on armed robbery offences.

His rescuers said he had told them he became lost while walking in the area and they were surprised by his alleged crimes.

Northern Territory Northern Watch Commander Len Turner confirmed to the media that the man had been under police guard over several offences.

Canberra says it has not received the money.&nbsp;

The shocking revelation has been made by Australia's own financial watchdog Austrac.&nbsp;

The report says that 1.8 billion US dollars were indeed sent from Rome to Canberra in the last seven years.&nbsp;

Out of this amount, 71.6 million dollars were allegedly sent in 2017, 137.1 million dollars in 2015, 295 million in 2016, 581 million dollars in 2017, 422 million dollars in 2018, 491.8 million dollars in 2019, and 294.8 million dollars in 2020.

All these transactions are undocumented and the reasons are unexplained. The identity of the recipients is yet to be disclosed.&nbsp;

The bishops in Australia claim they never received a single cent and Vatican officials are stunned too, saying the transaction looks like 'science fiction' and the Vatican does not have that kind of money.&nbsp;

According to Vatican's data, only 980,000 dollars have been sent to Australia since 2014 mostly for payment of salaries to bishops, expenses at the Vatican embassy, pension and travel costs.&nbsp;

This figure is nowhere close to the amount revealed by the Australian watchdog.&nbsp;

Austrac vows to release further details in the days to come, but the bishops in Australia are getting restless.

The controversy is set to explode and the pope's image and reputation are at stake.&nbsp;
