Embattled Haiti PM Ariel Henry quits amid rise in gang violence

International connectivity to Haiti has been restored. It was disrupted on Sunday because of violent clashes in the capital that damaged communications infrastructure. As per&nbsp;Maarten Boute, chairperson of&nbsp;Digicel, one of the main telecoms providers in Haiti, the company's field teams have fully restored the connection on Sunday afternoon.

This comes as several thousand inmates escaped from Haiti's main prison in the capital, Port-au-Prince, after an overnight violent attack. As per reports, the attack on Saturday (March 2) led to the death of at least a dozen people. Hundreds of inmates may have escaped from another facility known as Croix des Bouquets after a similar attack. However, the numbers are not clear yet.

<h2>Ongoing violence in Haiti</h2>

Pierre Esperance of the National Network for the Defense of Human Rights, an NGO, reports that following the overnight attack, only about 100 of the National Penitentiary's roughly 3,800 inmates remained inside.&nbsp;

In conversation with AFP, he mentioned seeing numerous prisoners' bodies and wounded individuals in the aftermath of the attack.&nbsp;

An AFP journalist who visited the prison observed around a dozen bodies outside the facility, some displaying wounds from gunfire or other projectiles. Inside, the prison was nearly deserted, with only a few remaining inmates.

The Haitian government, in a statement, reported that there was another assault on another facility known as Croix des Bouquets. There, the police attempted to repel the gang and the attempt resulted in several injuries among both the prison staff and inmates.

As per Esperance, it remains unclear how many inmates escaped from the second prison, which housed 1,450 inmates.

The assault, as per AFP, occurred amid a recent surge in violence in Port-au-Prince, where since Thursday heavily armed gangs controlling much of the city have been unleashing chaos. These gangs are reportedly seeking the removal of Prime Minister Ariel Henry, who has been at the helm of the crisis-ridden Caribbean nation since the assassination of President Jovenel Moise in 2021.

The US has announced a $5 million reward for information leading to the criminals who carried out the assassination of Ecuadorean presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio in August.

Less than two weeks before the presidential election, a former lawmaker and crusading anti-corruption journalist Villavicencio, was gunned down in Quito on Aug 9. The Ecuadorian National Police have arrested six Colombian nationals, suspected to be a part of an organized crime group, as part of the assassination plot.

"I believe that Jack's life is definitely in danger after leaving Laos," Ms Palamy Pradichit says. "Transnational repression of Lao dissidents is real and a growing phenomenon. In recent years, Lao democracy activists have disappeared or have been found killed in neighbouring countries, such as Thailand."

The political blogger ran two community Facebook pages that led to rare discussions on corruption, pollution, and civil rights in Laos, where one-party state repression is the norm.&nbsp;

Self-proclaimed urban guerrillas have shot and killed a veteran corporate lawyer in Myanmar's largest city, underscoring the violent conflict between the military government and its opponents in both the nation's metropolitan centres and its distant countryside.&nbsp;

Min Tayza Nyunt Tin was shot numerous times while driving in Yangon on Friday,&nbsp;according to a business colleague, said media reports and a statement from the guerrilla group.

The group, which goes by the name Urban Owls, claimed that the lawyer was a business associate of the military leaders who had taken over the nation two years prior and that he had assisted them in money laundering so they could acquire real estate and other assets worth hundreds of millions of dollars abroad, reported the Associated Press.&nbsp;

The army has intensified attacks on opponents in the cities, making thousands of arrests and even using lethal force on nonviolent&nbsp;protesters. At least 3,160 citizens have been slain by security forces since the army seized control, according to a comprehensive list by the Aid Organization for Political Prisoners, a rights monitoring institution.&nbsp;

In their statement, the Urban Owls insurgents referenced what they claimed to be Min Tayza's social media posts, including one in which he thanked the former air force chief of staff Myat Hein for helping him make his fortune.&nbsp;

The NYPD said that it would not comment on pending litigation while there was no immediate reaction reported from the FBI and the CIA.

Malcolm X rose to prominence as the national spokesman of the Nation of Islam, an African-American Muslim group that espoused Black separatism.

He spent over a decade with the group before becoming disillusioned, publicly breaking with it in 1964 and moderating some of his earlier views on racial separation, angering some Nation of Islam members and drawing death threats.

Malcolm X was 39 years old when three gunmen shot him onstage as he prepared to speak at at New York's Audubon Ballroom on Feb. 21, 1965. Shabazz was 2-years-old at the time and was present there with her mother and sisters.

In Shabazz's notices of claims, which New York law requires be served on certain government agencies before a lawsuit can be filed, Shabazz said she seeks $100 million in damages.

Soon after, some associates of Malcolm X said they believed various government agencies were aware of the assassination plan and allowed to it happen.

Talmadge Hayer, then a member of the Nation of Islam, confessed in court to being one of the assassins.

In 2021, a New York state judge threw out the convictions of two other men who wrongly spent decades in prison for the murder of Malcolm X, saying there had been a miscarriage of justice. Hayer had long said the two men were innocent and that his accomplices were other Nation of Islam members.

"Shots were fired by three unknown shooters also, from unknown weapons from a considerable height other than the gun attack carried out by the suspect, Naveed Meher, arrested from the spot," the Dawn newspaper reported quoting a member of the JIT on Tuesday.

The JIT, led by Lahore Police chief Ghulam Mahmood Dogar, said Khan was hit by three bullets on the container-mounted-truck during the protest rally. A total of 13 people had suffered bullet injuries during the attack.

The JIT also pinpointed "some mismanagement" in the security arrangements at the PTI's rally.

Home Minister of Punjab in Pakistan, Omar Sarfraz Cheema, said earlier that the attack on Imran Khan was an "organised one and well-thought-out conspiracy".

Naveed is a "trained assassin" and he was present at the crime scene with his accomplices, the minister said.

He said Naveed also failed a polygraph test. Naveed had told police he wanted to kill Khan as music was played at the time of ‘azaan’ during Imran's rally.
