Former Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday (Feb 13), a day after leaving the Congress party, but his gaffe during the presser grabbed more headlines than what he said.&nbsp;

Chavan said in the afternoon "today around 12-12:30, I am going to start a new journey of my political career, I am going to join BJP" which came as a big setback to his former party ahead of the upcoming general elections in the country.&nbsp;

During the press conference, Chavan mistakenly addressed Mumbai BJP chief Ashish Shelar as Mumbai Congress chief, which led to laughter from Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis and others present there. Fadnavis then rectified the error.&nbsp;

Chavan, who is the son of the former Maharashtra chief minister and union home minister SB Chavan, has spent nearly four decades in Congress. He said that today signifies the commencement of his fresh political journey.&nbsp;

The move to join BJP came amidst speculation that he might be given the Rajya Sabha nomination.&nbsp;

He also addressed the issue raised by Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut regarding the Adarsh scam as he defended himself, stating, "The Bombay High Court's decision favoured me. I view it as a political mishap. Although certain agencies have contested the court's ruling, I have endured enough and consider it a non-issue now."&nbsp;

The former CM and Shiv Sena (UBT) president Uddhav Thackeray has also raked up the Adarsh housing scam to target Chavan and said on Monday that if the BJP sends him to the Rajya Sabha, it will amount to disrespecting martyred soldiers.&nbsp;

Ashok Chavan's exit from the Congress was expected for some time. Sanjay Nirupam, a Congress leader from Mumbai, claimed in a post on X (formerly Twitter) that Chavan was not happy about the way a particular Congress leader in the state functioned. Former Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan, his senior Congress colleague and state party chief Balasaheb Thorat will be paying a visit to Sanjay Raut who is undergoing treatment at a hospital in Mumbai.

Congress leader Manikrao Thakre will also be accompanying them to meet the Shiv Sena leader. Raut was admitted to the Lilavati hospital on November 11 following a complaint of chest pain. Earlier on Tuesday, Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray also met him at the hospital.

He has been instrumental in reaching out to various leaders in a bid to garner support for Shiv Sena for the government formation in Maharashtra.

Over a fortnight after the declaration of Assembly election results, Maharashtra came under the President`s Rule on Tuesday as the political stalemate continued in the state.

Shiv Sena, which has been keen on a party nominee becoming chief minister, moved the Supreme Court against Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari`s decision to not extend the time given to it to prove its ability to form the government in the state.

Senior Sena leader and former Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Manohar Joshi and NCP Chief Sharad Pawar have also met Raut in the hospital.

NCP and Congress have indicated that they were not in a hurry to form a non-BJP government in Maharashtra in the wake of the imposition of President`s Rule and said they will sort out all issues among themselves and their allies before talking to Shiv Sena.

Congress and NCP had fought the assembly polls together. BJP had emerged as the single-largest party with 105 seats and Shiv Sena had finished second with 56 seats in 288-member assembly.&nbsp;

"Upset with the delay in the construction of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya, Thackeray, on October 18, announced that he would visit the city on November 25.

"We warn everyone who thinks that Hindutva has died. We are still alive. We are saddened that Ram Temple has not been constructed yet. I will visit Ayodhya on November 25," Thackeray had said.&nbsp;

On senior Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut`s recent remark that the Supreme Court cannot solve the Ram Temple issue because it is a matter of faith, Chavan said&nbsp;''Our country functions on the basis of the Constitution. Whatever decision will be taken by courts will be followed by the entire nation.''&nbsp;

Former Maharashtra Chief Minister and state party unit chief Ashok Chavan noted that the Congress will join hands with &quot;like-minded&quot; parties in Maharashtra to take on the ruling BJP.

Chavan spoke at a party meeting which was attended by senior Congress leaders of the state.

&quot;The prevailing social situation in Maharashtra, the political situation and the fight against the government in future was discussed at the meeting,&quot; Chavan said.

&quot;The problems currently plaguing the state, the prevailing political situation and the upcoming Budget session of the Maharashtra Legislature were discussed at the meeting,&quot; Chavan added.

Chavan noted that the Congress and the National Congress Party (NCP) have decided to put up a fight on issues like &quot;deteriorating condition of farmers in the state, issues being faced by middle class and rising dictatorship like the attitude of the BJP-led government&quot;.&nbsp;

In a separate meeting, Congress and NCP leaders met at the official residence of Leader of Opposition Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil in South Mumbai.

The Bombay High Court on Friday set aside Governor&#39;s sanction to prosecute senior Congress leader and former Maharashtra chief minister Ashok Chavan in the Adarsh scam.

Chavan&#39;s counsel had alleged that no fresh evidence was produced and his prosecution was politically motivated. The prosecution had, however, argued that in case the sanction is set aside it would lead to the acquittal of the former chief minister.

Reacting to the decision, Chavan said, &quot;Truth has prevailed. It was politically motivated, completely uncalled for order from the governor&#39;s office.&quot;

In February 2016, Maharashtra Governor Vidyasagar Rao granted permission to the CBI to prosecute Chavan under IPC sections related to criminal conspiracy and cheating and under the Prevention of Corruption Act.

The Congress leader later challenged the governor&#39;s order in the high court. Chavan&#39;s petition claims the governor&#39;s order was &quot;arbitrary, illegal and unjust&quot; and was passed with &quot;malafide intentions&quot;.

Adarsh housing society was built for the widows of the Kargil war but subsequently all the flats are monopolised by the high and mighty of the politics.

The CBI accused Chavan of approving additional floor space index (FSI) for Adarsh society in a plush south Mumbai area and accepting two flats for his relatives in return. Chavan had to resign because of the graft charges made against him.
