<p>An 18-year-old girl of Pakistan origin is suspected to have been killed by her family after she refused to marry through the arranged marriage system.</p>

<p>Saman Abbas had refused to marry someone as per her family’s traditional plan. Her family wanted her to marry a cousin in Pakistan, but Abbas protested.</p>

<p>A 22-year-old man has allegedly been lynched in Rajasthan's Bikaner, news reports said Thursday.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The alleged lynching took place on Tuesday night.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The reports added that an FIR has been lodged against seven people. And that three persons, including the woman's father, have been arrested in connection with the case.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The reports said the woman was Hindu. The 22-year-old man, Saif Ali, was Muslim.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The reports said the woman had been sent to live with her relatives after her marriage had been arranged within her community.&nbsp;</p>

<p>But that her family members spotted Saif in their locality, and attacked him.&nbsp;</p>

<p>They then dumped his body on the outskirts of town.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Saif was taken to hospital after people informed police.&nbsp;</p>

<p>But, the reports said, Saif died from his injuries in hospital.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Can't call it a 'love-jihad' case... In this age, when you study together, attraction can happen and then you don't see religion or community," ANI reported Superintendent of Police, Sawai Singh Godara, as saying.&nbsp;</p>

Rajasthan: Woman's family kills her friend before her arranged marriage

<p>Parents of a Texas high school student who was reported missing in late January had abused their daughter after she refused an arranged marriage, leading her to run away from home until she was found in mid-March, police said.</p>

<p>Maarib Al Hishmawi, 16, was reported missing on January 30 after she was last seen leaving Taft High School in Bexar County. She was found in mid-March when she was taken in by an organization that cared for her after she ran away.</p>

<p>Police revealed her parents, Abdulah Fahmi Al Hishmawi, 34, and Hamdiyah Saha Al Hishmawi, 33, allegedly beat her with a broomstick and poured hot cooking oil on her when she refused to marry a man in another city.&nbsp</p>

<p>Apparently, the parents agreed to the arranged marriage in exchange for $20,000.</p>

<p>Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar said on Friday: 'This young lady, at various times over that time period was subjected to some pretty bad abuse because she didn't want to be married to this person.'</p>

<p>'Several times it was reported to us that this young lady was abused with hot cooking oil being thrown on her body. She was beaten with broomsticks,' Salazar added.&nbsp</p>


Maarib Al Hishmawi, now 16, has been placed in the custody of child protective services along with her five siblings, ages 5 to 15.

She was born in the remote Tropoja region in northern Albania, but now lives on the coast in Durres.&nbsp;Dressed in a tie and military beret, Rakipi chain-smokes, has a crushing handshake and takes clear pleasure when the guard at the local port calls her &quot;boss&quot;.&nbsp;Rakipi said that, for her, the oath was a form of liberty. The alternative path laid out for women in the Kanun is one of subservience, hard domestic labour and total lack of control.<br />

&quot;It was difficult for women to be part of life,&quot; said Rakipi. &quot;Being free was taboo.&quot;<br />

During the post-World War II communist regime of Enver Hoxha, Hasanpapaj was a leader of the local branch of the communist party and headed up &quot;a brigade of about 50 farmers&quot;.<br />

Rakipi also feels nostalgia for the communist regime &quot;that always recognised me as a man&quot;, worked as a soldier training students to assemble a Kalashnikov rifle. She later became a police officer.<br />

Much like Hasanpapaj, Rakipi says &quot;she doesn&#39;t give a damn&quot; about not having kids and brushed off the matters of sex and relationships.<br />

&quot;I am in love with nature, the sun. I paint,&quot; Rakipi said. &quot;What better love is there than that?&quot;<br />

Both these sworn virgins firmly reject homosexuality. With Rakipi saying it is &quot;not moral&quot;.<br />

For British anthropologist Antonia Young, author of a book on sworn virgins, sexuality had nothing to do with the custom. The &quot;virgjinesha&quot; gained the privilege of being admitted into a male-only world, although their gender was never changed on their birth certificates.<br />

&quot;They were definitely within the masculine world. They mixed with men, they socialised with men, they drank with them, particularly in cafes,&quot; she said.<br />

For any women today who may be tempted into taking the oath of becoming a sworn virgin, much of the significance of the act will be lost as so much has changed in Albanian society, said Young.<br />
