<p>Nicholas Drummond, a defence analyst specialising in ground combat told The Times that&nbsp;the army retained so many senior officers because it still had the structure of a much larger organisation, even though troop numbers were being reduced to less than 76,000.</p>

<p>“The army constantly believes it is going to be regrown to a previous level and that’s never going to happen now,” he said.</p>

<p>He said that the navy and air force had a better balance of senior officers.</p>

Putin eases citizenship process for foreigners fighting for Russia in Ukraine

<p>Continuing his rhetoric of the 'London plan', Pakistan's former prime minister Imran Khan targeted the country's army, alleging that it is conspiring to&nbsp;put him in jail for 10 years under sedition charges.</p>

<p>A much-awaited report released by the United Nations (UN)&nbsp;on Friday claimed that at least 500 people were executed by foreign fighters and the Malian army during an anti-militant operation carried out in March 2022.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) released the figures which revealed the worst atrocity the Sahel country has gone through since militant insurgency flared up in 2012.</p>

<p>The report is also the most damning document released till now against the armed forces of Mali and their foreign allies.</p>

<p>In the report, the&nbsp;nationality of foreign fighters has not been explicitly identified, although Mali has brought in Russians who are claimed to be Wagner mercenaries.</p>

<p>Explaining the events that unfolded in Mali's central town of Moura between March 27 and March 31 last year, the OHCHR said that it had "reasonable grounds to believe that at least 500 people were killed in violation of norms, standards, rules and/or principles of international law."</p>

<p>The victims were "executed by the Malian Armed Forces&nbsp;and foreign military personnel" who were completely controlling the area, it said.</p>

<p>The UN peacekeeping mission's human rights division in Mali, MINUSMA published the report after a lengthy investigation.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to the report, around 20 women and seven children were killed, while evidence indicated that 58 women and girls were victims of rape and sexual violence.&nbsp;</p>

<p>People who had been detained were tortured, it stated.</p>

<p>UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk termed the findings "extremely disturbing".</p>

<p>"Summary executions, rape and torture during armed conflict amount to war crimes and could, depending on the circumstances, amount to crimes against humanity," he said in a statement.</p>

<p>Subsequently, the RSF, which is headed by former militia leader General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, better known as Hemedti, in a statement said that the army had entered their camps in south Khartoum and laid siege to paramilitary forces there.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“The Rapid Support Forces were surprised Saturday with a large force from the army entering camps in Soba in Khartoum and laying siege to paramilitaries there,” reported AFP. It added that the army had “launched a sweeping attack with all kinds of heavy and light weapons.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>Meanwhile, the Sudanese army said that the paramilitaries attacked “several army camps in Khartoum and elsewhere around Sudan,” spokesman Brigadier General Nabil Abdallah told AFP. He added, “Clashes are ongoing and the army is carrying out its duty to safeguard the country.”<br />

The clashes came as tensions between the military and RSF escalated in recent months, forcing a delay in the signing of deal with political parties to revive the democratic transition.</p>

<p>Hours after the clashes broke out, the RSF claimed that they had taken control of the presidential palace, the residence of the army chief, Khartoum international airport, as well as airports in the northern city of Merowe and El-Obeid in the west. According to a Reuters journalist, cannons and armoured vehicles were deployed in the streets, and the sound of heavy weapons fire was heard near the headquarters of both the army and RSF.</p>

<p>This comes after days of tensions between the army and the RSF which had sparked fears of a confrontation that would undermine long-running efforts to return Sudan to civilian rule after years of power struggles and military coups.</p>

<p>On Thursday, the army said that some of the recent movements in Merowe by the RSF were illegal and took place without coordination.&nbsp;</p>

<p>However, the paramilitaries said that the actions by the leadership of the armed forces and “some officers” were an attack on its forces with the intention of creating instability. Eyewitnesses told Reuters that there has been a heavy exchange of gunfire in Merowe, on Saturday.&nbsp;</p>
