The first screening​ of Gadar 2 started on Friday at 11 am and will continue for three days, there will be five shows every day for the Lok Sabha members in the New Parliament building. 
 
Gadar 2 became a smash hit as fans were eager to see Sunny Deol and Ameesha Patel reprise their roles as Tara Singh and Sakeena respectively. The film also features Utkarsh Sharma who plays Tara and Sakeena's son.&nbsp;

The film has Tara Singh (re-entering Pakistan this time to get back his son Charan Jeet Singh (played by Utkarsh Sharma, who also essayed the child’s role in 2001’s Gadar) who lands up in the country due to confusion about Tara's whereabouts. The film has Ameesha Patel reprising her role as Tara Singh's wife Sakeena. The film is helmed by Anil Sharma.&nbsp;

WION's Shomini Sen called the film jingoistic but one that worked because of its leading man. "Deol screams, shouts, flexes muscles, and grunts in regular intervals but somehow makes&nbsp;Gadar 2&nbsp;engaging. Sure, I did find myself rolling my eyes on several occasions, but nevertheless enjoyed Deol saving the day with a hammer and a sidekick in tow. Sunny’s half-sister Esha Deol hosted a special screening on Saturday and both, Sunny and Bobby Del were present at the screening with their families. In videos and photos going viral, the trio made a rare joint appearance for the cameras before the screening.

It comes at a time when OTT-infested space is narrating bold, realistic content but when it comes to the big ticket screen outings, Hindi cinema seems to rely on the tried and tested formula. Two weeks back Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani brought back quintessential Bollywood family drama to the big screen and this week Sunny Deol and Ameesha Patel return with period action-drama Gadar 2. A sequel to the 2001 blockbuster film Gadar: Ek Prem Katha, the Anil Sharma directorial has a similar setting, with Deol presented in a superhero avatar. Back then the film had the India-Pakistan partition as the backdrop, 22 years on the sequel has the Indo-Pak 1971 war as the backdrop. High on theatrics, action, melodrama, and anti-Pakistan sentiments, Gadar 2 serves Deol in a larger-than-life avatar and very nicely connects the first part of the film with the sequel, making for a very engaging masala action thriller.&nbsp;

The setup remains the same. Tara Singh (Deol) owns a fleet of trucks (and drives one) and delivers goods on a regular basis to the Indian Army cantonment in Pathankot. Married to Sakeena (Patel), their son Jeete (Utkarsh Sharma) is now a college-going kid. It is 1971 and India and Pakistan are on the brink of war. Tara is asked to provide a fleet of trucks to a border area with ammunition by General Rawat. On the said day, firing between the Indian and Pakistani armies leads to Tara and some of his drivers getting involved in cross-firing. Hours later Tara along with a few soldiers and drivers are reported missing. His family is eventually informed that they have been held captive at a prison in Islamabad.&nbsp; 
 
Anxious about how his father is and unable to see his mother's misery, Jeete decides to enter Pakistan illegally in order to get Tara back. Once he is there Jeete realizes Tara never got captured by the army and instead had fallen off a cliff. Meanwhile, Tara returns home only to find his son gone. Seventeen&nbsp;years after he had created a mini-riot in Pakistan in order to bring his wife back, Tara returns to Pakistan this time to bring his son back.&nbsp;

Writer Shaktimaan Talwar, Gadar 2 story remains the same and much like the first part plays to the gallery. In 2001, the fabric of India was different and jingoism was not so much the norm. Twenty-two years on, harping one's love for the country has become a habit and it mostly works for the larger audience. Gadar 2, in that sense, manages to stick to the same framework and has plenty of anti-Pakistan moments. Many would recall Deol's powerful dialogues on how it was due to India that Pakistan existed back in the first film. In the second part, Deol pelts out similar dialogues on Pakistan. A confrontation scene between Pakistan General Hamid Iqbal (a Tara hater) and Tara Singh has the latter reminding him that if the majority of the population in Pakistan was given a choice to head back to their roots in India they would. And while Talwar creates a typical antagonist in the Pakistani General who hates India, Hindus and Tara with great passion, the writer also tries to mute the hatred. In Pakistan, while fleeing from the authorities, Jeete is often helped by random strangers who, even though are part of the enemy country, are not India haters.&nbsp; 
 
Deol himself treads a careful path, never really bashing the Muslims, or Pakistan altogether but calling out what's wrong. Of course, he has ample lines that play to the gallery - from talking about India's greatness, (Hindustan zindabad tha, hai aur hamesha rahega) to how it belongs to every religion to reminding the enemy about Bangladesh and its creation- Gadar 2 rides high on nostalgia and jingoism.&nbsp;

Since it features Deol as the alpha male, age is never considered. Back in the first film, he had famously uprooted a handpump and swung it around a mob, killing and injuring many. In the second part, the makers give a hat tip to the iconic scene which is bound to be hooted and cheered in theatres across. In Gadar 2, Deol also hurls a cannon at a crowd and beheads people with a single swig of a hammer similar to the one that Thor yields in Marvel films. Thor is God, Deol is superhuman but they are more or less the same people. Deol, in his 60s, is in fine form and carries the outlandish, melodramatic film on his shoulder very well. He has Utkarsh Sharma playing his onscreen son and sidekick who gets his moments to shine as well in the film with action sequences and dialoguebaazi. He is Anil Sharma's son and hence gets a substantial role after Deol.&nbsp; 
 
Ameesha Patel, meanwhile, remains restricted in her abilities to emote and is given limited screen time. She heaves and sighs, runs towards Deol at regular intervals and prays to a whole lot of gods.&nbsp; 
 
A word of praise for the music by Mithoon. The first part is to date remembered for its soulful music and this one should&nbsp;be appreciated too. Not only does the composer recreate the old classics like 'Main Nikla Gaddi Leke' and 'Uddja Kaale Kawa' but also creates newer tunes that are truly beautiful.&nbsp; 
 
Since the film involves a bunch of Muslim characters, the writers use Urdu occasionally just to reiterate the identity of the characters. Indians are referred to almost always as Kafirs for no rhyme or reason. The film also overall gives out a very old late 1990s and 2000s vibe. The women are very loudly dressed, and the sets are over the top much like the reactions. At 2 hours 50 minutes, the film is also very long. But Tara Singh alone makes the ride worthwhile.

Featuring Sunny Deol and Ameesha Patel in the lead, the cross-border partition drama was a blockbuster hit back when it had released in 2001. 22 years later, the same team is back with a sequel, Gadar2.

Set against the backdrop of India's partition in 1947, the film followed the journey of a Sikh man who saves a Muslim woman from a mob and falls in love and marries. The woman has been separated from her family due to the riots and hence is unable to migrate to Pakistan. Amidst the tense circumstances, they find solace in each other, having been college mates, and eventually, their bond deepens into love.

Sunny Deol and Amisha Patel are currently busy promoting the sequel of the film which is up for a theatrical release on 11 August. At a recent interview, Deol was asked to comment on cross-border love stories and if he felt the film influenced such relationships.&nbsp; 
 
Deol was particularly given the reference of Seema Haider, a Pakistan resident who came to India to marry her “lover” from Greater Noida, and Anju, who crossed the international border to be with her Pakistani “friend”. 
 
Deol was asked if the films had inspired these cases, to which the actor said, “I don’t believe so… Nowadays, technology facilitates people meeting through apps. Once they develop feelings for each other, they naturally want to meet and be together. Instead of criticising or concerning ourselves with such matters, we should respect their choices, as it’s their personal life. Whether it’s right or wrong is for them to decide.” 
 
He also mentioned that he seldom keeps up with the news. “Since my childhood, I’ve rarely read newspapers or watched the news. I used to focus solely on the sports pages. News has become more like a commodity now.” 
 
Deol also spoke about how he works independently without being associated to any film camps.

“I have no idea how to play the flattery game, and I don’t know what camps in the industry are. I have no desire to become that type of actor. My aspiration is simple: if you appreciate me, I’ll be here; if you don’t, then I won’t. My presence is determined by my talent; if I possess the art, I’ll be present; if not, I won’t. I acknowledge and embrace reality, so I steer clear of living in a fabricated world.” 
 
Gadar 2 has been directed by Anil Sharma, who directed the first instalment too. The film stars Ameesha Patel, Utkarsh Sharma, Manish Wadhwa and Gaurav Chopra along with Deol. It will release in theatres on August 11, 2023.

Filmmaker Anil Sharma says his Partition-set drama 'Gadar: Ek Prem Katha', which completes 20 years on Tuesday, owes its origins to a subplot of a film on exodus of Kashmiri Pandits, which never got made. Starring Sunny Deol as Tara Singh, a Sikh who falls in love with a Pakistani Muslim girl, Sakina (Ameesha Patel), the film released on June 15, 2001 to a thunderous response.

What worked for the film were its crowd-pleasing dialogues, a chartbuster soundtrack by Uttam Singh and the movie's emotional hook- how Tara and Sakina's love story blooms against the unfortunate Hindu-Muslim riots during the Partition era. Sharma said the way 'Gadar'&nbsp;bulldozed all the obstacles that came its way -- from its emotionally-charged shoot to the historic box office face-off with Aamir Khan's 'Lagaan'&nbsp;-- felt unreal.

"Everyone makes films, but a movie like 'Gadar' can only be made with God's blessings and audience's love. The film stands tall even today and has a strong recall value. I count my blessings even today," Sharma said.

Sharma, who co-wrote the story with his frequent collaborator, writer Shaktiman Talwar, wanted to make a period film, something related to India-Pakistan Partition after a string of successful action films with veteran actor Dharmendra in 'Hukumat'&nbsp;(1987), 'Elaan-E-Jung'&nbsp;(1989) and 1991's 'Farishtay'.

Around 1997-98, the director was gearing up to make a multi-starrer film on the exodus of Kashmiri Pandits in early 1990s and had even worked with Talwar for close to 10 months on its script. The director had spoken to several top stars from the industry to feature in the film, all equally excited to start the shoot, when the director encountered a slight obstacle.

"In the film's second half, I needed a subplot about a Kashmiri boy from our side and a girl from the other side. It was a love story. Then Shaktiman ji narrated me a real story he had heard and it blew me away. I told him, 'let's pause the current film and flesh this idea out'. I felt it had to be made, without any delay."

The story which Talwar had narrated Sharma was that of a Sikh ex-soldier of the British Army, Boota Singh and his tragic cross-border love story. The filmmaker wanted a happy ending. "I wanted to treat it like Ramayana, how Ram goes to Lanka go get Sita back. Here, the son asks his father to get his mother back. It was an extremely strong emotional point, which is why the film worked. I knew it would become India's 'Titanic'," he said.

Sharma worked on the plotline of 'Gadar' with Talwar and as soon as they cracked the major emotional beats of the film, he met Deol who was shooting for a film in Ooty to narrate him the script. "Tara could only be played by Sunny. I needed someone extremely powerful, extremely innocent. There's no one in the industry apart from him to do this. I had him in mind while conceptualizing the film. I knew Sunny would be iconic in the film," he said.

'Gadar'&nbsp;was shot across Punjab, Rajasthan, Shimla and Uttar Pradesh. Sharma said there are so many memories from the film, that a separate movie on its making could be made. He has also toyed with the idea of penning a book, on how the team shot the lavish train sequences and enormous crowd sequences. Though the film continues to rank as one of the biggest hits of Indian cinema, there has been criticism over its jingoistic narrative and its portrayal of Pakistani Muslims as conservative and intolerant.

Sharma dismissed the criticism and said the film was sincere in its effort to chronicle the pain of the Partition on both sides. "There are some who will always find some criticism with anything. We didn't show them in a bad light. We showed their pain, our pain. The way things are, we showed exactly that," he said.

'Gadar'&nbsp;released on the same day as 'Lagaan', making it one of the biggest box office battles of the time. But Sharma recalled not being tensed. In fact, one of his fondest memories, dates back to watching the 3-6PM show of 'Gadar'&nbsp;at Mumbai's Maratha Mandir. "It was a packed house, some thousand people, standing on top of the seat and clapping. The entire hall was reverberating. It was maddening. That was the craze for 'Gaddar,'' he said.

The court further directed the police to seize Sharma's assets which includes his properties in south Delhi.

"We had never stopped any agency from arresting the directors, who are presently housed at a hotel under the detention of UP police," the court said.

It also said that the Economic Offences Wing (EoW) of Delhi Police can also arrest Amrapali directors - Shiv Priya and Ajay Kumar in the case.

In a massive crackdown the Amrapali Group for "wilful disobedience" of its orders, the Court had earlier attached the company's 100-bed multi-speciality hospital, bank accounts, the building which houses its office, certain firms and a "benami" Villa in Goa.

The apex court was hearing a batch of petitions filed by homebuyers who are seeking possession of around 42,000 flats booked in different Amrapali projects.

On October 31, the apex court had directed the Amrapali Group to disclose the names of all the companies with which it had any kind of transactions after forensic auditors pointed out that there may be a web of more than 200-250 such firms where home-buyers' money was transferred.
