US actress Amber Heard on Wednesday denied severing the tip of ex-husband Johnny Depp`s finger during a violent argument, saying that the Hollywood star had been throwing bottles at her "like grenades". 
 
Heard is giving evidence at London`s High Court for a third day on behalf of the publishers of Britain`s Sun newspaper, which Depp is suing for libel after it labelled him a "wife beater" in a 2018 article. 
 
The actress, who accuses the 57-year-old "Pirates of the Caribbean" star of physical abuse on at least 14 occasions, was questioned about an incident in Australia in March 2015 when she says she was subjected to a three-day hostage ordeal. 
 
Depp has told the court the tip of his finger was severed during an argument when Heard, 34, threw a vodka bottle which struck his hand. 
 
"I only threw things to escape Johnny when he was beating me up," said Heard, who has previously admitted throwing objects in self-defence. 
 
She said she had taken a bottle from Depp from which he was drinking and smashed it on the floor, saying "it snapped something in him" leading him to hurl bottles at her. 
 
"He picked them up and started using them like grenades or bombs...throwing one after another in my direction." 
She said he threw all the bottles within reach except a large magnum of wine. 
 
Depp`s lawyer Eleanor Laws said Heard`s account that the actor had severed his finger by smashing a phone against a wall and then continued to assault her was a lie. 
 
"No it`s not," she replied. "I don`t think he meant to sever the finger, but, yes, he carried on attacking me." 
Laws also accused Heard of stubbing a cigarette out on Depp`s cheek. "No, Johnny did it right in front of me. He often did things like that," she said. 
 
THREATENED MANY TIMES 
 
In her testimony so far, Heard has said Depp threatened to kill her many times while the violence she suffered included being slapped, headbutted and throttled. 
 
During her time in the witness box, Heard has repeatedly denied that she is making up her account as she goes along, such as a claim she made on Tuesday that she had been told Depp once pushed his ex-girlfriend Kate Moss downstairs. This had not appeared in any previous statements. 
 
Heard was questioned about the aftermath of another incident in December 2015 when she says Depp headbutted her, breaking her nose, leaving her with two black eyes, bruised ribs and a cut lip while he pulled out clumps of her hair. 
 
The following day she appeared on the James Corden TV show but Laws said her stylist reported she had seen the actress without make-up and she had no injuries. Heard said she had been heavily made-up to cover the bruises before the stylist saw her. 
 
Two days later she was seen by a nurse, who was her friend, who said Heard had a bleeding lip when she answered the door to her house which she was told Depp had caused. But the nurse did not report any bruising nor see any injuries to her scalp when she looked, the court was told. 
 
Heard again denied she was lying. 
 
Laws also accused her of trying to make staff members take the blame when the couple took their dogs to Australia without the proper paperwork when they returned there in April 2015. 
 
Emails showed she had discussed the issue with a member of Depp`s staff beforehand who told her the dogs could not go but Heard told the court she believed Depp had taken care of it. 
 
Heard later pleaded guilty to a charge of lying on an incoming passenger form, and was let off with a good behaviour bond. 
 
The trial is set to conclude next week, although no ruling is expected immediately.

"The radio silence hurts a lot. It only matters because I really like you." 
 
The text was sent the day after Heard claims the actor hit her in the face with a mobile phone during an argument, and while she was considering obtaining a restraining order.

"I did strike Johnny that day in defence of my sister," she said, expressing fear that Depp was about to push her sister Whitney down the stairs. 
 
"He was about to push (Whitney) down the stairs and, the moment before that happened, I remembered information I had heard (that) he pushed a former girlfriend -- I believe it was Kate Moss -- down the stairs. 
 
"I had heard this rumour from two people and it was fresh in my mind." 
 
The British supermodel has not publicly accused Depp, whom she dated in the 1990s, of causing her to fall down stairs.

But Kendall said in a written statement to the court she had been misquoted by the tabloid. She said she had texted the Sun reporter after the article was printed and told her: "It seems that the whole article was about defaming him." 
 
The Sun article had mentioned Kendall`s advocacy for the #MeToo movement against sexual harassment and assault, and her accusations that disgraced movie producer Harvey Weinstein sexually harassed her. 
"Although it was true that I was a victim of Harvey Weinstein, the rest was a lie," she said in her witness statement.

In her written statement, interior designer Laura Divenere stated she had not seen any injury to Heard in the days after Heard alleges Depp threw a phone which struck her face. 
 
Asked by Sasha Wass, lawyer for the Sun's publisher News Group Newspapers, if she had come under 'enormous pressure'&nbsp;to make the declaration, Divenere said: 'Correct'. 
 
Earlier the court heard from Depp`s long-time friend, artist Isaac Baruch, who said a 'distraught' Depp had come to see him in 2013, and told him Heard 'likes to hit', and that she would punch him after starting fights. 
 
In his witness statement, Baruch said Depp had told him: "I don't know what I'm gonna do, because I'm not gonna hit her, you know me I'm not gonna hit her, I love her." 
 
Baruch, who lived in one of the Los Angeles penthouses owned by Depp, also said Heard had no visible injuries in the days after she alleges that Depp threw a mobile phone during a heated argument in May 2016. 
 
In other testimony on Friday, Travis McGivern, one of Depp's security guards, said he saw Heard throw a full can of Red Bull drink at Depp, spit down at him from a landing and punch him in the eye during another argument in March 2015.

Paper made up quotes to defame Johnny Depp, actress tells UK libel trial

Hollywood star Johnny Depp wrote on a wall with blood from his severed fingertip during a long and violent confrontation with his ex-wife Amber Heard, London`s High Court heard on Thursday at his libel case against a British tabloid.

Depp told the court he suffered "some species of nervous breakdown" during a row with actress Heard, but denied he had violently attacked her and accused her of cutting his finger by throwing a bottle at him. 
 
The revelations came on the third day of Depp`s appearance in the witness stand as he sues the publisher of Britain`s Sun tabloid, News Group Newspapers, over an article in which it labelled the actor a "wife beater". 
 
Throughout the case, Depp has rejected all accusations that he was violent towards his former wife, saying that they were part of hoax created by Heard as an insurance policy. 
 
"She was building a wonderful dossier, an insurance policy for when we did break up," he said.

He agreed the couple had a row on the final day that began because he wanted Heard to sign a post-nuptial agreement, and he had not been drinking until that point.

Depp said Heard threw two vodka bottles at him, the second of which "severed my finger and crushed my bones". 
"That is when I began what I feel was perhaps some species of a nervous breakdown," he told the court. 
 
He said he began to write messages on the wall in blood with his severed finger, before then using paint. One message on a mirror said: "Starring Billy Bob, Easy Amber". 
 
Wass said the house was a scene of "carnage" with paint everywhere, and windows and the television smashed. It caused $100,000-150,000 of damage, according to Depp`s assistant, the lawyer said. 
 
By December 2015, Depp was regularly using violence against Heard, according to Wass. He replied the problem was that he ran away from fights. 
 
At their LA penthouse, Wass said when Heard stood up to Depp, he chased her, saying "you think you are a fucking tough guy?", slapped, then headbutted her in "an uncontrollable rage", pulled out clumps of her hair and said he was going to kill her. 
 
"It`s a lie," Depp said. 
 
Shown pictures of Heard with two black eyes, Depp said he had tried to grab her eyes while defending himself and he could have headbutted her accidentally.

Depp, the 57-year-old star of the 'Pirates of the Caribbean' films, is suing The Sun`s publisher, News Group Newspapers, and its executive editor, Dan Wootton, for libel over an article Wootton wrote in April 2018 calling him a "wife beater". 
 
The paper`s lawyers said they would show the claim was true and that he had beaten actress Heard, causing her to fear for her life, during violent rages brought on by alcohol or drugs, sometimes when he had falsely accused her of infidelity. 
 
"For the avoidance of any doubt, I have never abused Ms Heard, or, indeed, any other woman, in my life," Depp said in a witness statement in which he characterised his ex-wife as a calculating, emotionally dishonest narcissist. 
 
Wearing a dark suit and glasses and speaking in a deep clear tone, Depp gave evidence at the beginning of the case at London`s High Court. Heard, who arrived wearing a red scarf tied around her face, is also due to give evidence. 
 
In a written statement outlining Depp`s case, his lawyer David Sherborne said Heard had first aired the abuse allegations in May 2016, saying it was hard to think of "more extreme or violent" claims of abuse than she would make during the trial. 
 
"The Claimant`s position is clear; Ms Heard`s allegations are complete lies," Sherborne said. "The Claimant was not violent towards Ms Heard, it was she who was violent to him." 
 
In papers submitted to the court, Depp`s team also said Heard had begun an affair with Tesla chief executive Elon Musk in early 2015 shortly after they had got married and had engaged in at least one extra-marital relationship with her co-stars, with actor James Franco named.

In this week's release, 'Aquaman', DC universe somewhat redeems itself. It presents a superhero who may have his share of dark past, might be a bit brooding, but opens up a whole new universe where the action shifts underwater.&nbsp;

Directed by James Wan, 'Aquaman' has Arthur (Jason Momoa) playing a man who belongs to the ocean. He is what in Potter universe people are called- half-blood. His mother(Nicole Kidman) is the queen of an underwater nation called the Atlantis while his father is well... a human. In order to protect Arthur and his father, the Queen leaves her beloved husband and young son and goes back to her underwater life and duties only with a promise to return when there is 'order in the universe'. Years later, we find out, Arthur is a local hero, who saves submarines from pirates, and is a do-gooder. He is aware of his powers but isn't too keen to join the underwater world, for he blames the sea and himself for his mother's disappearance.&nbsp;

Mer(Amber Heard) a princess of one of the sea kingdoms urges him to come and take charge for she believes that he is the true king of Atlantis and can protect both the sea and surface from going to war- something that Arthur's half-brother Orm, the current ruler of the sea, desperately wants. Orm is of the belief that people of the surface have for years exploited the sea and it is time to fight back. &nbsp;While Arthur is initially disinterested, he eventually gives in and decides to fight, in order to save the people he loves.&nbsp;

At the onset, 'Aquaman' is quite captivating with its visuals, especially when Mer takes Arthur on a tour underwater. The underwater creatures, the mighty sea, and its strength is beautifully highlighted through graphics. It also helps that Momoa makes for a very convincing wild man of the sea.&nbsp;Momoa has an inherent quirk to his personality, he has inherent swag to his demeanour, which makes him a rather interesting choice for a superhero. But unfortunately, the actor's coolness is exploited too little in the movie.&nbsp;

The writers instead indulge in a lot of back stories, history and how the Atlantis co-exists with other kingdoms of the sea which not only stretches the film but makes the viewer lose track of the story after a point. &nbsp;It also doesn't help that DC universe indulges in melodrama in between where our superhero, who wears his superpowers lightly on his shoulders (And even obliges fans with selfies), becomes emotional and hesitant to fight. Those moments are perhaps the weakest in the film and may put you to sleep. Nevertheless, Momoa alone makes the film engaging and one can only hope that DC uses him and his personality to its full potential in later films.&nbsp;

Just when you are about to give up on the film, it redeems itself in the final battle sequence which is elaborate and takes place of course at sea. With superb VFX and Momoa's towering screen presence, 'Aquaman' ends as a grand visual spectacle.&nbsp;

There are plenty of loopholes. The antagonist played by Patrick Wilson is neither pure evil nor maniacal- qualities that are almost always there in supervillains. Wilson doesn't even look too convincing in his role and you almost empathise with his character and his reason to take over land and sea. The plot ultimately is predictable and doesn't tap into the potential of the lead protagonist much.&nbsp;

'Aquaman' ultimately is to be watched only if you are an ardent DC fan or are keen to see a superhero take charge of the mighty sea. It doesn't overwhelm you and gives you an adrenaline rush only in certain scenes. Superhero films need to be fun, entertaining and should provide the thrills. It shouldn't be an average watch. What's the fun in that?&nbsp;
