All India Congress Committee (AICC) President Sonia Gandhi on Friday (May 17) made an emotional appeal to the people of Uttar Pradesh's Raebareli, urging them to accept her son, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi with open arms, just as they accepted her.

She further asserted during her very first public address amid the ongoing Lok Sabha election campaign that Rahul "won't disappoint them".

Recalling the 'age-old' roots of the Gandhi family with the people of the constituency in the northern state, the AICC chief expressed gratitude to the residents of the city.

"I am very happy that I got the opportunity to come among you after so long...You all gave me the opportunity to serve you as an MP, this is the biggest treasure of my life. For the last 100 years, the roots of our family are connected to the soil of this land. This relation is as pure as Ganga Maa. It started with the farmer's agitation of Awadh and Raebareli," Sonia Gandhi said addressing the public meeting.

The grand old party lost its other bastion Amethi to BJP in the year 2019. BJP has nominated incumbent MP and Union Minister Smriti Irani to contest the seat in the current elections, whereas the Congress has fielded its long-time loyalist Kishori Lal Sharma.

Polling on both the seats will be held on May 20, which is the fifth phase of the ongoing elections.

The grand old party in a press briefing said that the ones who will make the donation will get a letter or merchandise signed by the former party chief Rahul Gandhi in return for their contribution.

While launching the campaign at the AICC headquarters in New Delhi, Congress treasurer Ajay Maken claimed that the main aim behind launching the initiative and the wider crowdfunding campaign called 'Donate for Desh’, launched by the party earlier, was not to collect money but was to motivate workers.

If someone thinks we will get all our funding for the elections through this crowdfunding, he is wrong and this is something we did not intend.”&nbsp;

“You cannot undermine the efforts of 3 lakh Congress people who have given money. The idea is not to get money, the idea is to motivate the workers. Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra will be going through one part of the country. The rest of the party workers in other parts will be able to participate by giving Rs 67,” he added.&nbsp;

Maken again emphasised the fact that the campaign was not a political platform nor a money-generation programme.

Congress seeks donation for Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra, to offer Rahul Gandhi-signed merchandise as gift in return

The Congress on Sunday claimed that its party general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra`s phone was also hacked during a recent spyware attack on several journalists and human rights activists.

Last week, Facebook, the parent company of WhatsApp, alleged that Israeli cyber security company NSO used WhatsApp servers to spread spyware Pegasus.

"When WhatsApp sent messages to all those whose phones were hacked, one such message was also received by Priyanka Gandhi Vadra," said Congress chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala in a press conference on being asked about NCP leader Praful Patel and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee receiving messages from the Facebook-owned messaging platform.

Surjewala, however, did not mention when exactly Priyanka received the message.

Amid the raging controversy, the government has asked WhatsApp to come out with an explanation on the breach of privacy and list out measures that have been taken to safeguard the privacy of millions of Indians.

This comes a day after Congress interim president Sonia Gandhi dubbed the snooping on activists, journalists and political persons as illegal, alleging that the government acquired an Israeli software to spy on citizens.

According to reports, WhatsApp revealed that journalists and activists in India have been the target of surveillance by operators using the Israeli spyware Pegasus.

The messaging platform said that it had reached out to the people who were targeted but declined to reveal the identities and "exact number" of those who were targeted.The messaging company stated that it remains committed to protecting all messages of its users.

Sushil Kumar Shinde emerges frontrunner as CWC set to meet this week

The drama at the AICC took a quick turn on Saturday when senior leaders like PL Puniya and Nana Patole also put in their papers. PL Puniya was the general secretary in charge in Chattisgarh and Patole was looking after the agriculture cell of the party.&nbsp;

Sources informed WION that from July 2 roughly 1000 to 2000 workers and junior AICC functionaries will go on an indefinite sit-in. The purpose of the sit-in is to pressurize Rahul Gandhi to take back his <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/mass-resignations-of-congress-leaders-part-of-scripted-drama-bjps-tom-vadakkan-231500">resignation</a> and make other senior leaders resign from their respective positions.&nbsp;

Virendra Vashisht, one of the AICC secretaries who put in their papers said, "Most of the young people have been promoted by Rahul Gandhi. If Rahul Gandhi does not continue as the president then we would continue to only function as normal workers of the party.” Sources also said that the purpose is to build pressure within the organization so that Rahul Gandhi can recast the party.&nbsp;

When WION asked the question to Congress spokesperson, Pawan Khera, he said, "It is a way to request Rahul Gandhi that he must continue as the president of the Congress. It is not about junior leaders versus senior leaders".

Karnataka Chief Minister and JD(S) leader H D Kumaraswamy Sunday met AICC General Secretary K C Venugopal here to discuss political developments in the state, amid coalition worries and dissidence within alliance partner Congress surfacing again.

The leaders reportedly discussed the threat by rebel Congress MLA Ramesh Jarkiholi to quit the party along with legislators close to him, recently concluded Lok Sabha polls in the state and preparations for the May 19 by-polls to Chincholi and Kundgol assembly segments, sources said.

They are also said to have discussed the strategy to be adapted to pacify the disgruntled MLAs, who may pose a threat to the coalition government.

Kumaraswamy had on Thursday taken stock of the situation with his deputy G Parameshwara and senior Minister D K Shivakumar.

In another development, Yeshwanthpura Congress legislator S T Somashekara has reportedly convened a meeting of "like-minded" MLAs on April 30 to seek their suggestions to find a solution to the present political situation in the state.

The scheduled meeting has irked some Congressmen, with party MLC G Raghu Achar slamming Somashekar and asking him to discuss any issues he may have with the party leadership.

However, an MLA close to Somashekar, not willing to speak in detail, said they would discuss some issues faced by MLAs under the coalition government and also long-pending development work.

Somashekar, also chairman of the Bangalore Development Authority, had said in January that Congress Legislature Party leader Siddaramaiah should again be made chief minister and that development work had come to a grinding halt.

His comments had irked Kumaraswamy, who had even threatened to step down.

Reacting to a question about the meeting called by Somashekar, Karnataka Congress President Dinesh Gundu Rao said he was not aware of it and would gather information.

The meeting might have been called with good intentions, he said.

"A meeting of MLAs close to him (Somashekar) might have been called to strengthen the party. Ours is not a Hitler-like party or one which follows that style of politics... There is independence to hold such meetings in the interest of the party," he said.

Speculation about the longevity of the coalition government has again come to the fore as the second phase of the Lok Sabha polls drew to a close Tuesday, with state BJP chief B S Yeddyurappa predicting its collapse after the May 23 election results.

There are talks within political circles that any adverse results for the coalition in the Lok Sabha polls, which they fought in the alliance, despite resentment among the grass root workers and leaders of both the parties, would have its implications on the longevity of the government.

Adding to this was the threat by Jarkiholi, who has been hobnobbing with the BJP for some time now, that he along with other MLAs would resign from the Congress soon in bulk, which has caused fear among the ruling coalition leaders as it would trigger the "number game" in the assembly.

Speaking to reporters after meeting with Venugopal, Rao expressed confidence about "good results" in both the Lok Sabha polls and assembly by-election in two constituencies.

"We will win more than 20 seats (of total 28) in the Lok Sabha polls," he said.

He said though the media was talking about a Modi wave, there was an "undercurrent" in favour of the Congress.

The Congress has fielded Subash Rathod from Chincholi and widow of former Minister C S Shivalli- Kusumavathi from Kundgol for the May 19 by-polls.

The Janata Dal (Secular) is supporting Congress candidates in both the constituencies.

The BJP has named Avinash Jadhav from Chincholi and Chkkangoudra Siddangouda Ishwargoud from Kundgol.

The by-poll to Chincholi was necessitated as Umesh Jadhav, Avinash's father, quit as Congress MLA and joined the BJP to contest the Lok Sabha polls from Gulbarga, while the Kundgol fell vacant following the death of MLA and Minister C S Shivalli.

Monday is the last date for filing nominations for the May 19 by-polls, for which results will be declared on May 23, along with the Lok Sabha poll results.&nbsp;

Singh, a 1984-batch IPS officer of Union Territories cadre, will complete an over three-year tenure as the ED Director.

Sanjay Mishra, a 1984-batch Indian Revenue Service officer of the Income Tax cadre, has been appointed as the Principal Special Director in the agency and has been entrusted with the additional charge of ED Director for three months. 
 
Official sources said Mishra, posted as chief commissioner of Income Tax in Delhi at present, has not been empanelled as an additional secretary in the central government and hence has been given the top ED charge in an additional capacity.

He is expected to be empanelled soon and subsequently, will head the ED in a regular capacity, they said.

The ED director post is an additional secretary rank post in the Union government.

The ED enforces two major laws in the country to check black money&nbsp;the criminal Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) and the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA)

The All India Congress Committee has instituted as an austerity measure committee to tighten its belt on expenditure. The letter signed by General Secretary Administration Motilal Vora has been circulated to all the office holders of the All India Congress Committee.&nbsp;

The letter states that General Secretaries who are the members of Parliament should not claim travel allowance from the AICC. The letter also states that the expenses on canteen expenditure, newspaper and computer peripherals should be minimized by the office holders.&nbsp;

The letter further states that one staff member of the General Secretary must submit weekly expenditure to the office of the treasurer.

The AICC members have also been requested to save power. The letter states that electrical gadgets must be switched off whenever office holders are out of office and they must ensure that staff cars are not misused.

This path, the Congress said, can lift the people out of poverty and create a large, vibrant and productive middle class.

It will also create wealth and generate government revenues that will enable the state to spend adequately to attain social and redistributive justice, the party said.

The country faces a crisis and will go into a deeper crisis in the last year of this government as this budget has provided no answers, Chidambaram claimed. "This budget is the handiwork of a government which is completely helpless, clueless and directionless. I am afraid, 12 months from today, whoever comes into the government, will face a major crisis," he said. "The one party which can bring this country out of the crisis is the Congress. Why do I say that? I say that not out of arrogance, not out of conceit, I say this because we have done it before and we can do it again beginning next year," the former Union minister said. Promising the industry that there will be no tax "terrorism", no veiled threats, no "midnight knocks" on doors, he said, "We will lift fear and we will allow you to create wealth." The resolution said that the tenure of the Narendra Modi-led government was replete with governance and management misadventures and mistakes. "The most colossal failure has been its mismanagement of the economy," it said. The Modi government was presented with a golden opportunity to catapult India's economic growth to a new high through a near perfect alignment of stars, an upswing in the economy, macro-economic stability after the upheaval of the 2008 global financial crisis, the resolution said. "The Congress reiterates that the abysmal economic management of the Modi government has resulted in lack of jobs for millions of India's youth, stagnant real incomes for hundreds of millions of farmers, collapse of the manufacturing sector, destruction of micro, small and medium businesses, paralysis of India's banking sector," it said These have severely dented business confidence and expectations of households, the resolution said. "The economy is in the hands of ignorant and incompetent policy-makers who have derailed economic growth through reckless and bizarre policies such as demonetisation and a hasty imposition of a flawed Goods and Services Tax regime," it said. Citing the economic survey, Chidambaram said there were three main challenges which were not addressed in the last four years, education, health, agriculture and employment . "And then the most severe indictment in the last four years, real agricultural GDP and real agricultural income as have remained stagnant," he said. "I want to ask the BJP, I want to ask the prime minister, if in four years you did not address the challenge of education or health or agriculture or employment, if in four years the farm sector has become relatively poorer, if in four years the average farmer has become relatively poorer, what have you been doing in the last four years? This is a question the prime minister must answer," he said. Chidambaram said that the note ban was a ?big lie, there cannot be a greater lie than demonetisation". "They said we will abolish black money, we will put an end to corruption. We will stop fake currency. Have they put an end to black money? Every rally, every public meeting of the prime minister is financed by any money other than black money," he said. "Have they put an end to corruption, fake currency?" Chidambaram asked.

His sister had to cut her own hair because RSS supports such ideas,&rdquo; said Rahul Gandhi. His attack on RSS came from the position of lynching which took place last years against people in the name of cow protection where Dalits were at the receiving end. Rahul Gandhi basically tried to challenge the popular narrative around which BJP&rsquo;s campaign of cultural nationalism has functioned throughout 2016-17. In his speech, he tried to create an opposing binary between Dalit politics and RSS worldview.

His speech also addressed projects and promises associated with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He even challenged PM&rsquo;s foreign policy initiatives in South Asia.

&ldquo;China is in Doklam, in our shops (as all fancy products are made by them) in the Maldives and Sri Lanka. China is everywhere,&rdquo; said Rahul Gandhi. He mentioned that as of now there exists US Vision and a China vision but he hopes there comes a time when there can be an Indian vision.

He even accused the government of maintaining silence on important issues. &ldquo; Government protects crony capitalism in the country,&rdquo; he said.

He also addressed internal issues plaguing Congress Party. He admitted that his party could not stand up to people&rsquo;s expectation in the last tenure of UPA which led to its complete wash out in the Lok Sabha elections. He requested party members to not to fight before Lok Sabha elections and reassured the senior leadership that they would be carried along in decision making.

He said that first he would break the wall between workers and leaders and then between youth and political parties. He has been harping on this theme since the beginning of his career. His experiment to do so failed in Youth Congress where he ended up introducing elections for the posts. The elections turned so expensive that poor candidates were unable to participate.

He also clarified his temple run in Gujarat and said that he had been visiting temple even before though the fact is that Congress monetized his temple run in Gujarat as an electoral strategy.

Unlike previous sessions, AICC session this year also decided to have TV panel discussion format on pre-chosen themes rather than long monologues of leaders and workers which bored everyone to death in the past. For this reason, for the first day, subjects like media, communication and common heritage were picked up.

Sources say that Rahul Gandhi would meet senior leaders at the AICC on Tuesdays and Fridays and Saturdays would be dedicated to the Congress workers.&nbsp;

Many feel that the practice would revive memories of earlier Congress presidents and help create a stronger public connect.&nbsp;

The practice of using AICC as a place of the meeting was discontinued in 1999 as important meetings were shifted to 10 Janpath and 24 Akbar Road was relegated to ceremonial functions for security reasons.&nbsp;

Rahul Gandhi has been primarily operating from his Tuglaq Road residence from the past 10 years. With power officially shifting from Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi&#39;s presence in AICC would be more than symbolic.&nbsp;

Referring to the 2G spectrum acquittal, Rahul Gandhi said the truth was before the people

While addressing a press conference in Delhi after his first Congress Working Committee meeting, Congress president Rahul Gandhi again hit out at the BJP and said its entire structure was based on lies. The Congress president said, "The whole architecture of BJP is about lies, the whole structure is about lies." Referring to the 2G spectrum acquittal, he said the truth was before the people. Claiming Gujarat Model to be a lie, he said " If you see the Modi model in Gujarat it was a clear lie, when we went to Gujarat the people said there is no model, they said what is going on is stealing of people's resources. Everything about BJP is a lie: Rahul Gandhi in first meet as CWC president

After missing several deadlines Congress Working Committee (CWC) &nbsp;is expected to approve an election schedule on Monday.

According to the party constitution, the CWC meeting is required to approve the schedule for the election of the party president. This will be the final step for Rahul &nbsp;Gandhi to be elevated as President of the All India Congress Committee (AICC).

And as it is unlikely that there will be a contender to challenge Rahul, his election will be complete by mid-December.

The decision came after a meeting was held on Saturday.

The elevation of Rahul Gandhi will mean that he will also be heading the final phase of the politically crucial Gujarat elections as AICC chief.
