Indian cinema's hidden affair with Agatha Christie: From Gumnaam to Charlie Chopra

More than 100 people were locked inside the former house of famed British mystery writer Agatha Christie for several hours in the English countryside on Friday. 
 
In a series of mysterious occurrences, which seemed to have been lifted straight from the pages of one of the mystery novels of Christie, the group of tourists was trapped inside the house after a tree was knocked down by stormy weather which led to blockage of the road leading down to the property located in the county of Devon, southwest England. 
 
One of the tourists, Caroline Heaven, who was visiting Greenway, reached out to local news outlet Devon Live to spread the news of around 100 tourists being trapped on the grounds of the former holiday home of Agatha Christie.

Britain’s National Trust, which is responsible for managing the historic site, quickly placed a message on its website, stating that a single-track road leading into Greenway has been blocked completely due to the falling of a large tree. 
 
National Trust's spokesperson said that they were aware that there were “visitors, staff and volunteers still at Greenway unable to leave,” further stating that the National Trust was “doing everything” to ensure the comfort of the tourists while they wait&nbsp;for the road to reopen. 
 
The tourists, who were stranded, kept themselves busy by playing rounds of croquet on the lawn and drinking cups of tea in the tearoom of the house, said Heaven while speaking to Devon Live.

<h2>'And Then There Were None'</h2>

Heaven, who reached the house of the author at around 11:30 am local time (6.30aET) on Friday, appreciated the efforts made by the staff in taking care of the tourists. “They are doing a great job, they are giving us free teas and things. It’s a bit bleak,” she stated. 
 
As per the National Trust website, Agatha Christie used to spend hours on the lawn of the Greenway, playing croquet and golf, and entertaining guests by reading snippets from her latest mystery novels.

A trailer for the upcoming mystery comedy film 'See How They Run' is out. The Tom George directorial ('The Country' TV series) is an original story but appears to be inspired by Agatha Christie's timeless mystery novels and carries a similar wit.

Written by Mark Chappell, the whodunit film stars Sam Rockwell and Saoirse Ronan in lead roles as Inspector Stoppard and his spirited young sidekick Constable Stalker, respectively.

The period is 1950s. It is jolly old London. In West End, a famous play is being adapted into a movie when a major crew member Leo Köpernick (Adrien Brody) is murdered.

The series will feature a new pair as the lead investigators. 
 
Bhardwaj has partnered with Agatha Christie Limited to develop the big screen franchise for the Indian audience. 
Some of Christie`s iconic characters include Hercule Poirot, Miss Marple, and Tommy and Tuppence, but with his franchise Bhardwaj will create an entirely new pair of investigators, drawing inspiration from Christie`s timeless mysteries. 
 
Talking about the collaboration, James Prichard, great grandson of Agatha Christie, and Chairman and CEO of Agatha Christie Limited, said, "I`m truly excited at the prospect of developing a new Agatha Christie film franchise in India, and am delighted to be partnering with Vishal, who is a multitalented and visionary filmmaker with a terrific track record for adapting works to create memorable pieces of cinema. He has also demonstrated a real passion and understanding of my great grandmother`s characters and stories and I very much look forward to seeing where this project takes us."

Bhardwaj added, "Agatha Christie had a tremendous skill of defining emotional chaos, dysfunctional relationships and the turmoil in her characters while engaging us in a riveting mystery. The first film will introduce a young heroine who is thrown into solving a murder, and for the case she teams up with an unlikely companion to unravel the case. The future films will follow the duo as they continue to investigate multiple murder mysteries.

The script is currently in development, and which of Christie`s books will be adapted is still under wraps.

While the cast of the film is still to be locked, the National award winning filmmaker is excited to dive into the project.

The first film in the franchise is scheduled to go under production from early 2021, with Basi Akpabio and Leo Dezoysa serving as executive producers for Agatha Christie Limited on the new films. Bhardwaj will also co-produce through his production house.

The film is part of the series by 20th Century Fox which earlier gave us the critically acclaimed 'Murder on the Orient Express' which boasted of a stellar cast including Penelope Cruz, Johnny Depp and others.&nbsp; 
 
'Death on the Nile' has previously been made in 1978 starring legends including Bette Davis, Maggie Smith, Mia Farrow and others. In the new adaptation, Fazal will join an A-list cast that will see the return of Branagh as Poirot, as well as Gal Gadot, Armie Hammer and Letitia Wright. 
 
The film goes on floors later this month in London and parts of Europe.
