Even before the Afghan Taliban arrived at the gates of Kabul, Pakistan started discussions with the government-in-waiting to deal with militant outfits such as Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and Baloch groups operating out of the neighbouring country.

In their interactions with the Taliban leadership, Pakistani officials made it clear that all these groups must not only be denied operating space but also face military action.

According to reports, the Taliban is now mediating talks between the banned outfit Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and the Pakistan government.

He added that engaging with the TTP or its affiliates should be seen in the context of Pakistan and the Taliban government's counter-terrorism efforts and the strategy they agreed on.

Since the Taliban took control of Afghanistan, the country has been struggling to battle poverty. Amid an economic crisis, residents of the Afghan capital city Kabul have revealed that they have been worried about the approach of winter.

"The winter is very cold right now and people do not even have the money to buy a kilo of gas, coal and wood and they are facing a lot of problems," said Masood Ahmad Bashiri, a Kabul resident.

Many Afghans have been selling possessions to buy food as the Taliban is unable to pay wages to civil servants. Also, the urban communities are facing food insecurity similar to rural areas.

"If foreigners help us this year, who will help us in the years to come? So, for this reason, we have to find a solution ourselves and build up our country," said another Kabul resident Esmatullah Atal.

Meanwhile, various aid agencies distributed food, blankets and cash to nearly 130 displaced families in Kabul. UNHCR spokesperson Babar Baloch said that around 9 million Afghans are "just one step away from starvation." He further added that 700,000 people, mostly women and children, have been displaced this year alone.

The distribution was overseen by the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the World Food Programme (WFP) and the Danish aid agency DACAAR.

"It's a story of hunger, of conflict, of poverty and now winter is coming as well. Afghans need help desperately and quickly," said Baloch.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi also urged the World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF) to resume financing support to Afghanistan for reconstruction.

Various financial institutions suspended their engagement with the country until there was clarity within the international community on the recognition of the government led by the Taliban.

Currently, banks are running out of money, civil servants have not been paid and food prices have surged.

The IMF said that Afghanistan's economy was set to contract up to 30 per cent this year. "Afghanistan is in need of revival on all fronts, and development is the top priority," said Wang.

Afghanistan's highest revenue-garnering industry takes a hit since Taliban takeover

Afghanistan has a relatively favourable water endowment and enjoys a prime upstream location on the rivers it shares with neighboring countries. Its crumbling water sector and severe shortcomings in water resources management leave the country in a horrible state of duress.

Accounting for 90 per cent of the country’s water use and 80 per cent of the population's employment, the agricultural sector is unable to provide sufficient food for Afghanistan's population, partly due to water shortages.

In Kabul's Khair Khana area, Jawad, a water tanker driver, complains that compared to the previous times, his business has taken a visible hit.

"I stand here everyday to sell drinkable water. I buy water from quite far and this is my usual spot to sell it to the people who take it to their homes. Compared to the previous government, my business has taken a visible hit," Jawad said. "Just take the example of today, I am yet to get customers, no household has even called me to say they need water. Previously, I used to get my tanker five or six times refilled but now the same car has to be refilled once in two or three days."

He claims that the downfall has been observed due to the crash in economy. "This is because people don't have money; there are no salaries. Banks have a problem and the fuel prices have gone up – 1 liter of petrol now costs 90 AFS. People from the area are forced to buy this water from me because the water they got is not drinkable."

Having access to safe drinking water is a daily struggle for many Afghans, with majority of the population reliant and forced to buy drinking water from these water supply vehicles. Throughout the day, residents can be seen brining in containers to take home the drinkable water. Even the elderly at times are seen carrying water containers and they too complain of the soaring water prices.

"The government allocated water supply comes after every seven or eight days and that too for ten or fifteen minutes. In this area, the water we get from boring or wells is salty and not drinkable. We are forced to buy this drinking water, for which I have to pay 20 AFS per can," said Abdul Samad, a resident of District 11, KhairKhana area of Kabul city. "The water prices have gone up slightly compared to the previous government because in the previous government we used to pay 15 AFS for the container and now we have to pay 20 AFS for one container. This is perhaps because the prices of oil have gone up, so the cost has to be borne by us."

Long-term humanitarian crisis owing to the country's water problems is likely imminent, especially if international donors and aid organisations stop their emergency relief and support due to political reasons or simply due to the dangerous conditions on the ground.

More than 70 per cent of the population in Afghanistan do not have access to basic, clean and safe drinking water, and the water that is available is contaminated.

Pakistan has threatened to stop the transit of the Afghans across the Durand Line if the Taliban government failed to accept the fence being constructed along the border.

Pakistan is said to be arm-twisting the Taliban government in Kabul to accept the Durand Line, reported The Singapore Post.

The Taliban government is reportedly miffed at this Pakistani blackmail and has made it clear in no uncertain terms that such conditions on the Durand Line were unacceptable.

The Durand Line divides the traditional Pashtun homelands in Afghanistan and Pakistan. The border was mainly porous until recently fenced and heavily guarded due to the tribal, linguistic, social, and economic ties.

Afghanistan for long has always refused to recognize the Durand Line as an international border. Durand is currently a disputed boundary for several reasons. Pashtuns on both sides believe that they have been indiscriminately divided and separated from their family and land on either side.

Pakistan has viewed the Durand Line as critical to its survival as a Punjabi- dominated Sunni country. Even whispers of Great Paktunistan, a Pashtun nation encompassing Pashtun-dominated areas across the current border, raises grave suspicions in Pakistan, especially in the army. The area is home to some 35 million Afghans, 15 million of them in Afghanistan, reported The Singapore Post.

As it began to lose clout over militant groups, once spawned and controlled by them, the Pakistan Army decided to fence the long and arduous border with Afghanistan, a move which triggered several run-offs between the armed forces of both countries. With the Taliban taking over Kabul, Pakistan visualised a cakewalk.

But, the Taliban government refused to make any commitment on the issue despite Pakistan making it clear at the outset that it could become a stumbling block in their relationship.

Once the Taliban spokesman made its opposition to the border fencing, Pakistan hit back with a crippling blockade at the Chaman border post early October.

It is the second-largest border checkpoint with thousands of trucks and men travelling across the highway every day. The crossing is a major source of revenue for the cash-strapped Taliban government.

With border disruptions at Torkham and withdrawal of PIA flights from Kabul, Pakistan's message to the Taliban is loud and clear--fall in line or face consequences, reported The Singapore Post.

These brazenly threatening posturing from Pakistan has riled the Taliban government where there is no consensus on any remission on the issue of Durand Line or the border fencing. It is well known how fiercely the Taliban founder, Mullah Omar, had opposed any reconciliatory position on Durand Line, reported The Singapore Post.

The Durand Line could thus become a point of conflict between the two allies.

Pakistan blackmails Taliban over Durand Line dispute, threatens to stop transit of Afghans across border

Since the Taliban took over Afghanistan in August, activists and journalists have been living in fear. Activists have said that they are being hunted down by the Taliban. In a tragic incident, a 29 year old activist, Frozan Safi has been shot and killed in northern Afghanistan. She worked as an economics lecturer.

This appears to be the first known death of a women’s rights defender since the Taliban took control.

The Guardian newspaper quoted a doctor named Meraj Faroqi as saying that the Taliban security forces brought the bodies of two unidentified women who had been shot dead.

The bodies were alongside those of two men in a house in Mazar-i-Sharif. Zabihullah Noorani, Taliban’s director for information and cultural affairs in Balkh province, suggested that this could have been the result of a “personal feud”. He further told that the police were investigating the case.

“We recognised her by her clothes. Bullets had destroyed her face,” said Safi’s sister, Rita.

It has been revealed that Frozan received a call from an anonymous number. She was asked to gather proof of her work as a rights defender and leave for a safer place. The activist believed that her request for asylum in Germany was under way. Therefore, she stuffed some documents, including her university diploma, and left home, her sister told. Rita said that they are completely unaware of who killed her.

Abdul Rahman Safi, her father, said that Frozan’s body had been found in a pit. It was registered by hospital workers as unknown.

Recently, the Human Rights Watch said that the rules formulated by the Taliban have been prohibiting most women from operating as aid workers in the country. This is further contributing into a humanitarian disaster.

Women have been holding nationwide protests regularly against the Taliban. They demand that their rights should be restored and protected.

It was a split second decision. Mirza Ali Ahmadi and his wife Suraya found themselves and their five children on Aug. 19 in a chaotic crowd outside the gates of the Kabul airport in Afghanistan when a US soldier, from over the tall fence, asked if they needed help.

Fearing their two-month old baby Sohail would get crushed in the melee, they handed him to the soldier, thinking they would soon get to the entrance, which was only about 16 feet (5 meters) away.

But at that moment, Mirza Ali said, the Taliban - which had swiftly taken over the country as US troops withdrew - began pushing back hundreds of hopeful evacuees. It took the rest of the family more than a half hour to get to the other side of the airport fence.

Once they were inside, Sohail was nowhere to be found.

Mirza Ali, who said he worked as a security guard at the US embassy for 10 years, began desperately asking every official he encountered about his baby's whereabouts. He said a military commander told him the airport was too dangerous for a baby and that he might have been taken to a special area for children. But when they got there it was empty.

"He walked with me all around the airport to search everywhere," Mirza Ali said in an interview through a translator. He said he never got the commander's name, as he didn't speak English and was relying on Afghan colleagues from the embassy to help communicate. Three days went by.

"I spoke to maybe more than 20 people," he said. "Every officer - military or civilian - I came across I was asking about my baby."

Mirza Ali, 35, Suraya, 32, and their other children, 17, 9, 6 and 3 years old, were put on an evacuation flight to Qatar and then to Germany and eventually landed in the United States. The family is now at Fort Bliss in Texas with other Afghan refugees waiting to be resettled somewhere in the United States. They have no relatives here.

Mirza Ali said he saw other families handing their babies over the Kabul airport fence to soldiers at the same time. One video clip of a small baby in a diaper being hoisted by her arm over razor wire went viral on social media. She was later reunited with her parents.

Ever since his baby went missing dates are a blur, Mirza Ali said. Every person he comes across - aid workers, US officials - he tells them about Sohail. "Everyone promises they will do their best, but they are just promises," he said.

An Afghan refugee support group created a "Missing Baby" sign with Sohail's picture on it and are circulating it among their networks in the hopes that someone will recognize him.

A US government official familiar with the situation said the case had been flagged for all the agencies involved, including the US bases and overseas locations. The child was last seen being handed to a U.S. soldier during the chaos at the Kabul airport but "unfortunately no one can find the child," the official said.

A Department of Defense spokesperson and a spokesperson for the US Department of Homeland Security, which is overseeing resettlement efforts, referred queries on the matter to the State Department, since the separation took place overseas.

A State Department spokesperson said the government is working with international partners and the international community "to explore every avenue to locate the child, which includes an international amber alert that was issued through the International Center for Missing and Exploited Children."

Suraya, who also spoke through a translator, said she cries most of the time and that her other children are distraught.

"All I am doing is thinking about my child," Suraya said. "Everyone that is calling me, my mother, my father, my sister, they all comfort me and say 'don't worry, God is kind, your son will be found.'"

"Every officer - military or civilian - I came across I was asking about my baby." He said one of the civilian officials he spoke to told him Sohail might have been evacuated by himself. "They said 'we don't have resources to keep the baby here.'
