The United States said it has set up a professionally run fund in Switzerland to manage $3.5 billion of Afghanistan's central bank's reserves that were frozen following the Taliban takeover of the country.

According to reports, the new Afghan Fund was created on Wednesday, and it would have an account at the Bank for International Settlements.

The primary aim of the creation of the fund is to strengthen Afghanistan’s macroeconomic stability, including covering Afghanistan's arrears in international financial institutions and paying for electricity imports, but it will not handle humanitarian aid or government salaries, the TRT World reported.

Around $7 billion of Afghanistan’s central bank foreign currency assets are held by the US and other foreign banks.

The decision to set up a fund comes months after intense negotiations to release the $3.5 billion Afghan funds that were set aside for Afghanistan by US President Joe Biden.

The remaining $3.5 billion has been withheld by the US Federal Reserve (FED) and it will be disbursed as compensation to the victims of the September 11 attacks, which led to the US invasion of Afghanistan in 2001, the report states.

A court decision on this matter is awaited and is expected in October.

Meanwhile, the Taliban have lambasted the United States for moving its reserves to the Bank of International Settlements (BIS),

A Taliban official with the country’s central bank (DAB) told TRT World, “We don't agree with the transfer of money to the account indicated, but [we wish for it] to be transferred to Da Afghanistan Bank (DAB).”

The spokesperson added that they are open to a third-party monitoring system as demanded by the US government.

UN expert on human rights has now called out the staggering repression of rights of women in Afghanistan, describing it as a move towards authoritarianism. The statement was made by UN special rapporteur on human rights, Richard Bennett while addressing a human rights council meeting in Geneva on Monday.

UN Rights Expert: Afghanistan tipping towards 'authoritarianism'

The United Nations mission in Afghanistan has made an accusation saying that the Taliban were harassing and intimidating its female staff in the country. The UN said that the regime detained three women for questioning on Monday (Spetember 12). Taliban have imposed strict restrictions on women since they came to power last year.

"There has been an emerging pattern of harassment of Afghan UN female staff by the de facto authorities," the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) said in a statement.

Citing an example, UNAMA said three Afghan women working for the organisation were "singled out and temporarily detained for questioning" by armed security agents of the authorities on Monday.

Further details about the incident were not given.

"The UN calls for an immediate end to all such acts of intimidation and harassment targeting its Afghan female staff," UNAMA said, insisting the authorities provide guarantees for the security of all UN personnel in Afghanistan.

The Taliban have rejected UN's assertion.

"The information released by UNAMA is not true... nobody had been detained," said Bilal Karimi, spokeperson of the government.

"There was a gathering of women in Kandahar, and when the women were asked for an explanation, it was found that they were UN employees, after which they were released."

Karimi did not say what the gathering was about or how many women attended it.

United Nations' accusation was made just hours after a top UN expert said that the state of human rights in the country had deteriorated.

Women and girls, in particular, have seen a "staggering regression" in their civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights since the Taliban came to power, Richard Bennett, the special rapporteur on human rights in Afghanistan, said in Geneva.

"There's no country in the world where women and girls have so rapidly been deprived of their fundamental human rights purely because of gender."

UN says Taliban harassed its female staff in Afghanistan

Former Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai has appealed the Taliban to reopen girls' high schools. He has also applauded the protests of female students in Paktia province which, the residents say are against the measure of closure of the schools.

"The voice of Paktia's female students is the voice of all our girls and of Afghanistan," said Karzai, who remained in Kabul after the Taliban took over just over a year ago, on Twitter.

"We ask the acting Islamic government to open the schools," he said.

Taliban had initially said that they would open girls' schools, but then made a U-turn in March this year.

Authorities in Paktia said this week that girls' high schools had re-opened, though the move had not been officially approved.

On Saturday, the head of Paktia's information department told journalists any suggestion schools were closed was "propaganda".

Reuters quoted three residents and three Taliban officials who said that schools were shut on Saturday. All of them declined to be named. Reuters said that one of the three residents was a teacher who said that closure of schools prompted some girls to protest.

Video footage shown by local broadcaster Tolo on its website and Twitter account showed dozens of girls in school uniform marching down a street while chanting.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) said that quake was felt in the provinces of Kunar, Laghman and Nangarhar, and in the capital Kabul.

Highlighting that casualties could rise, Mawlavi Najibullah Hanif, the spokesman for the provincial governor, told the Bakhtar News Agency "Sunday night's earthquake has caused financial and human losses in Kunar province."

Afghanistan: 5.3-magnitude earthquake kills eight people and injures nine others

At a press conference, Abdul Karim Haider, the deputy minister of justice, said that Afghanistan does not need a constitution and can address problems by just applying Islamic laws.

Haider said that the Hanafi law serves as the framework for resolving all problems. "The holy Quran, the Sunnah of Mohammad (PBUH), and the jurisprudence of every Islamic country are the basis and the text of the constitution in general and in detail," he was quoted as saying by TOLOnews.

However, he said that they are ready to prepare the constitution in accordance with laws once they get directions.

Haider stated, "We are awaiting Amirul Muminin's direction (for creation of law). The Hanafi law system, the Quran, and the Sunnah of Mohammad (PBUH) are its sources. Thus we are confident that a comprehensive law will be established quickly to address everyone's concerns."

Former Taliban Ministry of Interior spokesperson Saeed Khosty has reportedly forcefully divorced his wife, the daughter of one of the former National Security Generals, for her lack of religion.

Khosty's wife, Elaha, 24, is a student of medicine at Kabul Medical University. She claims in the videotapes she made public that Saeed Khosty forced her into marriage before sexually assaulting her at the Taliban intelligence headquarters.

In one of the social media videos, she claimed that this Taliban official tormented her at night and left bruises all over her body.

After being arrested for having pictures of national security forces on her phone, Elaha was imprisoned by Taliban intelligence. While in custody, she was regularly humiliated and allegedly raped by Saeed Khosty while being videotaped.

The Taliban official and several armed Taliban members then pay her family a visit and frighten them by asking them not to question their marriage.

Elaha was forced to wed Khosty against her will and is now being held at the Gulbahar Center in Kabul. Despite her repeated attempts to flee, the Taliban always manage to apprehend her and return her, just like they did the last time they brought her back across the Torkham border.

She claims that after getting a smartphone, she had no choice but to record a video of herself, which she immediately uploaded on social media and submitted to the media.

Elaha is seen pleading in the video. She runs the risk of meeting Khosty's wrath by sharing the video. "It is better to die once than to die often," she adds.

However, Afghanistan will commemorate one year since the Taliban took control in August of last year with basic women's rights suppressed, media freedom restricted, and significant portions of the nation living in abject poverty.

No nation has recognised the de facto rule of the Taliban, and Afghan women have protested the limitations placed on their freedom of travel, employment, and education. The Taliban's highest leadership upholds the same values that it has used to violate and abuse the rights of Afghan women and girls.

Watch the video Elaha uploaded below: Shocking! A senior Haqqani official first raped & married to, daughter of ex, NDS official. ‘Said Khosti beat me a lot. Every night he raped me. No nation has recognised the de facto rule of the Taliban, and Afghan women have protested the limitations placed on their freedom of travel, employment, and education. The Taliban's highest leadership upholds the same values that it has used to violate and abuse the rights of Afghan women and girls. Over 40,000 metric tonnes of wheat dispatched so far to Afghanistan: India at UN

It has been more than a year since Afghanistan was under the control of the Taliban. The UN aid chief on Monday (August 30) said that countries should now resume sending development assistance aid to the people who are starving.

The economic and political situation in the South Asian country is deteriorating every day. The population is increasing, poverty is getting worse, and the authorities don’t have the funds to cope with it. Afghanistan's development has slowed, particularly since the Taliban took control.

According to the UN aid chief, six million people in the country are at risk of starvation, and half of them require humanitarian assistance. He further stated that without proper care, more than a million children are predicted to be suffering from malnutrition.

The UN and other charity organisations have struggled to get enough money into the country over the past year as international banks are wary of breaking sanctions.

Martin Griffiths, UN chief aid said, "Humanitarians have brought in over $1 billion in cash to sustain programme delivery, but the liquidity and banking crisis continues to impact delivery of assistance and on the daily lives of Afghans," Reuters reported.

It has been a year since the US forces haphazardly left their posts in Afghanistan, leaving the land in the hands of Talibani barbarians and terrorists. During the muddled exit, US troops, its allies and numerous other dependents were left in the lurch, fighting Talibanis. Now, a documentary has revealed that during the exit, a US Army colonel blocked the exit of several allies, effectively pushing them into the killing zones. IN PICS | What life in Afghanistan looks like after one year of Taliban rule? Reportedly, in a new documentary titled, “Send Me” directed by Nick Palmisciano, the members of a special operations volunteer team have revealed that an unnamed Colonel 'murdered' the passengers of five buses by not allowing them to board the planes that could have allowed them to leave Kabul. “There was a colonel who came out and wanted to show that essentially he was the one that could decide whether or not somebody could get on a plane or not," stated a witness, whose identity was concealed in the documentary. Meanwhile, MMA fighter turned-solider Tim Kennedy, who was part of the 13-member group tasked with the job of saving as many allies as possible added: "The colonel made the call to ‘put everybody back out'. I don’t care who they are, they get back on those buses and those buses go back into Kabul." Read more: Taliban restricts female students from leaving Kabul for studies: Report It is pertinent to note that passengers of the five buses had verified documents. They were carefully searched and vetted by the Marines and arrived at the US-controlled Black Gate on the fateful day of August 25, 2021 around 3 AM. However, the top-ranking Colonel from the 82nd Airborne division would not let them or the buses ferrying them get inside. The Colonel did not even allow the refugees that carried a US passport, stating the documents might have been forged. As a last-ditch attempt to save the lives of refugees on the buses, a call was made to North Carolina Senator Thom Tillis. The Republican leader further egged the army generals to intervene. However, by then, the situation outside the airport had turned dire and effectively the fate of the refugees was sealed. The documentary is streaming on Amazon Prime and in select theatres. Taliban defence minister Mohammed Yakoob Mujahid has accused Pakistan of providing airspace for US drones to enter Afghanistan. He characterised incursions by the drones as continuation of USA's 'invasion'. His comments came less than month after US President Joe Biden announced that al-Qaeda chief Ayman al-Zawahiri had been killed in Kabul in a drone strike. Mujahid said that US drones are seen flying over Kabul even now.

"Our information shows that they (US drones) are entering into Afghanistan from Pakistan, using the airspace of Pakistan," Mujahid told reporters when asked where the drones were coming from.

"We demand that Pakistan should not allow its airspace to be used against us."

There was no immediate reaction from Pakistan on Taliban's claims. Pakistan military has previously denied allowing use of the country's airspace.

"Deploying these drones in Afghanistan is still a clear invasion of Afghanistan and its airspace by the Americans," Mujahid said.

"They are doing this shamelessly. We condemn this illegal act and demand that the Americans put an end to it."

After two decades of military campaign, US and other forces left Afghanistan last year. This paved way for the Taliban to recapture power in the country.

The drone attack in July that killed Osama bin Laden's successor Zawahiri was the first known strike by the US on a target in Afghanistan since Washington withdrew its forces from the country on August 31 last year.

Mujahid said the authorities were investigating Biden's claims of killing Zawahiri.

"We will share the details when it is complete," he said.

Taliban have still neither confirmed Zawahiri's presence in Afghanistan nor acknowledged his death.

Pakistan providing airspace to US drones for entering Afghanistan: Taliban

It's been over a year since the Taliban took control of Afghanistan. During their takeover, the Taliban regime promised that they will be taking a more liberal approach towards women's rights but recent reports show that not much has changed in the current regime rather the government is only backtracked on all of its promises and left Afghan women and girls in despair.

Heavy drone activities in some parts of Afghanistan have been reported in the past few days. As per reports, the increased drone activity suggests that the United States is stepping up efforts to target Al-Qaeda or ISIS-K. However, there's no official confirmation whether or not the US is striking (or planning to strike) any terror outfit.

Locals in Helmand and Kandahar provinces of Afghanistan have reported heavy drone activities in the last few days, a prominent Afghan journo and war observer Bilal Sarwary wrote on his verified Twitter handle on Wednesday (August 25) based on sources.

Sarwary said, "A drone strike targeted camp bastion in Helmand around 5AM. AQIS and AQ members Abu Zubair, Abu Anas, Farooqi Qari Sulaiman and Abu Al Hassan have been present in various parts of Helmand province, including inside camp bastion." He mentioned that two sources, including a CT source, told him.

Some other observers, with expertise in the matter related to Afghanistan and Taliban, have also noticed increased drone activity lately which appears to be by the Western coalition.

This development comes after US President Joe Biden said on August 1 that Al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri was killed in a drone strike in Kabul. The alleged killing of al-Zawahiri was touted to be the biggest blow to the militant group since its founder Osama bin Laden was killed in 2011.

Despite Biden's claims, there are several claims and counterclaims over the entire operation. On Thursday (August 25), the Taliban announced that they had not located Zawahiri's body and that they were still conducting investigations.

On the other hand, a White House spokesman had said after the strike that the US has no DNA confirmation of the death of Zawahiri. The spokesman had stated that his identity was verified through other sources.

'Violation of the Doha agreement'

When Pentagon said it killed Zawahiri, the authorities also mentioned that his presence in Afghanistan was a clear violation of the Doha agreement signed in 2020, which chalked out the withdrawal of foreign forces from Afghanistan a year ago.

But the Taliban had said that the US had breached the accord. "The fact that America invaded our territory and violated all international principles, we strongly condemn the action once again. If such action is repeated, the responsibility of any consequences will be on the United States of America," the Taliban statement said.

'Violation of the Doha agreement' When Pentagon said it killed Zawahiri, the authorities also mentioned that his presence in Afghanistan was a clear violation of the Doha agreement signed in 2020, which chalked out the withdrawal of foreign forces from Afghanistan a year ago. But the Taliban had said that the US had breached the accord. "The fact that America invaded our territory and violated all international principles, we strongly condemn the action once again. If such action is repeated, the responsibility of any consequences will be on the United States of America," the Taliban statement said. Reports of heavy drone activity in parts of Afghanistan. What does it signify?

After being evacuated from Afghanistan due to a Taliban takeover, Afghan refugees and migrants in UAE facilities protested once more this week about the slow and unclear settlement procedure.

The facility provided Afghans with high-quality housing, sanitation, health, clinical, education, and food facilities.

Two Afghans in conversation with Reuters said that nearly hundreds of Afghans held banners and sang for their freedom. Almost a thousand Afghans are waiting for resettlement in other nations. A kid carried the banner, "One year is enough."

There have been difficulties, and the resettlement process has taken longer than anticipated, an official said in a statement to Reuters.

The official stated, "The UAE remains committed to this ongoing cooperation with the US and other international partners to ensure that Afghan evacuees can live in safety, security, and dignity," Reuters reported. However, a representative for the US said that it is also cooperating in its efforts to help Afghans find resettlement options.

Under the condition of anonymity, one of the Afghans said, "Nearly one year, we have been here in detention, and the camp is like a modern prison. No one is allowed to go out, they don't know when (we) will be settled permanently to any country," Reuters reported.

The protests broke out in February after the process stopped. Afterward, a senior official from the US State Dept. visited and promised all Afghans to be resettled by August. Nearly, 12,000 Afghans were reportedly housed at the Abu Dhabi facility. The US last year welcomed nearly 85,000 Afghans into the country.

The US further stated that no one would be forced to return to Afghanistan, despite the fact that several UAE citizens made voluntary returns after waiting for months.
