<p>The Indian space agency said that it took 178 days to complete a revolution after it was inserted in its targeted halo orbit on January 6, 2024.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Aditya-L1 spacecraft has been designed and developed by ISRO with an aim to study the solar atmosphere. The mission is an Indian solar observatory at Lagrangian point L1, which was launched on September 2, 2023.&nbsp;</p>

<p>ISRO said that the spacecraft is subjected to various perturbing forces that might cause it to depart from the targeted orbit during its travel in the halo orbit.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"It underwent two station-keeping manoeuvres on February 22 and June 7, respectively, to maintain this orbit. Today's 3rd station-keeping manoeuvre has ensured that its travel continued in to the second halo orbit path around L1," ISRO said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The space agency said that the journey of Aditya L1 around the Sun-Earth L1 Lagrangian point involves the modelling of complex dynamics.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"The understanding of various perturbing forces acting on the spacecraft helped in determining the trajectory accurately and planning precise orbit maneuvers," ISRO said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The flight dynamics software developed in-house at the UR Rao Satellite Centre (URSC) for the Aditya-L1 missions stands "fully validated" with today's manoeuvre.&nbsp;</p>

<p>While explaining, ISRO said the blue trajectory in the image is the orbit around the Lagrangian point L1. This trajectory is three-dimensional and what is shown is the projection of it in the X-Y plane.&nbsp;</p>

<p>SK#1, 2 and 3 are the station-keeping&nbsp;manoeuvres by the Aditya-L1 spacecraft, the space agency said, further adding that the final firing of the thrusters, SK#3 on July 2, placed the spacecraft back in the required orbit.&nbsp;</p>

<p>ISRO said that if an accurate firing was not done, the spacecraft would have moved away in a trajectory shown in green colour. The X-Y axes are marked at a distance of km, with Lagrangian point L1 at the origin.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“Aditya L1 will enter the L1 point on January 6. That is what is expected. Exact time will be announced at appropriate time,” said Somnath.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“When it reaches the L1 point, we have to fire the engine once again so that it does not go further. It will go to that point, and once it reaches that point, it will rotate around it and will be trapped at L1,” he added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Notably, once Aditya-L1 is placed in the specific spot, it will remain there for the next five years, gathering data which is important not only for India but for the entire world as well.&nbsp;</p>

<p>India's solar mission spacecraft, Aditya-L1 on Tuesday (Nov 7) captured the first high-energy X-ray glimpse of solar flares.</p>

<p>ISRO, while sharing an update on the recent development, noted that during its first observation period from Oct 29, the High Energy L1 Orbiting X-ray Spectrometer (HEL1OS) on board Aditya-L1 spacecraft has recorded the impulsive phase of solar flares.</p>

<p>“Commissioned on October 27, 2023, HEL1OS is currently undergoing fine-tuning of thresholds and calibration operations. The instrument is set to monitor the Sun's high-energy X-ray activity with fast timing and high-resolution spectra,” ISRO said in a statement.</p>

<h2><strong>What is a solar flare?</strong></h2>

<p>A solar flare is a sudden brightening of the solar atmosphere. Flares produce enhanced emission in all wavelengths across the electromagnetic spectrum – radio, optical, UV, soft X-rays, hard X-rays and gamma-rays.&nbsp;</p>

<p>HEL1OS data enables researchers to study explosive energy release and electron acceleration during impulsive phases of solar flares.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Indian Space Research Organisation, after the successful launch of Aditya L1 from Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh, released a statement saying that the payload covering the spacecraft was separated as it left Earth's atmosphere.</p>

<p>"The third stage of the separation of PSLV carrying the Aditya-L1 orbiter has been completed," as per ISRO.</p>

<p>"The launch of Aditya-L1 by PSLV-C57 is accomplished successfully," it added.</p>

<p>The agency said that the vehicle was successful in placing the satellite precisely into its intended orbit. It further added that the country's first solar observatory has begun its journey to its destination, the L1 point which lies between the Earth and the Sun.</p>

<p>The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is over the Moon, quite literally, with the successful landing of Chandrayaan-3 and orbiter of Chandrayaan-2 still revolving around Earth's only satellite. India became the first country to land on the Moon's south pole region successfully. ISRO, already a formidable name in space research and exploration now, has again etched its name among the elite space agencies in the world.</p>

<p>India is now is setting its sights on the next milestone, which is to launch a spacecraft to study the Sun. The mission, Aditya-L1, will seek to unravel secrets of the star nearest to planet Earth.</p>

<h2><strong>Why to study the Sun at all</strong></h2>

<p>We know that Sun is the reason we exist, survive and flourish. Earth and other planets in the Solar System were formed from stellar material that was left after formation of the Sun was complete. Sun not only formed the Earth but is responsible for the sustenance of life as well. All our energy sources eventually find connection with Sun.</p>

<p>In addition to its central role in the Solar System, the Sun also has an effect on interstellar medium, which is the extremely thin medium found between the stars. Charged particles given off by the Sun interact with the interstellar medium and give rise to phenomena such as heliosheath and heliopause.</p>

<p>Studying the Sun will not only give us insights into our immediate near-Earth space, but it also has a potential of&nbsp;improving our understanding of other stars in the Universe.</p>

<h2><strong>About Aditya-L1 mission</strong></h2>

<p>'Aditya' literally means the Sun in Sanskrit, the ancient Indian language. Aditya-L1 is going to be India's first space-based mission to study the Sun. The spacecraft, after launch will be placed in a halo orbit around Lagrange point L1 in space. This point is about 1.5 million kilometres from Earth.</p>

<p>Lagrange points are five locations in space around the Earth where gravitational forces of the Earth and the Sun along with orbital motion of the spacecraft interact in order to create a stable location. These are called Lagrangian or 'L' points. These are named after 18th-century Italian astronomer and mathematician Joseph-Louis Lagrange.</p>

<h2><strong>So what are mission objectives of Aditya-L1?</strong></h2>

<p>The ambitious Aditya-L1 mission seeks to study several topics:</p>

	<li>The mission will also study chromospheric and coronal heating, the physics of partially-ionised plasma, initiation of coronal mass ejections and flares.</li>

	<li>Aditya-L1 plans to&nbsp;study physics of solar corona and heating mechanism.</li>
	<li>ISRO will observe diagnostics of the coronal and coronal loop plasma. These include temperature, velocity and density.</li>
	<li>The mission will also study the development, dynamics and origin of CMEs (Coronal Mass Ejections)</li>
	<li>Aditya-L1 will attempt to identify sequence of processes that occur at multiple layers of the Sun (chromosphere, base and extended corona). These processes eventual lead to solar eruptive events.</li>
	<li>The magnetic field topology and magnetic field measurements in the solar corona will also be studied.</li>
	<li>Aditya-L1 will observe and study drivers for space weather, that is, origin, composition and dynamics or solar wind.</li>

<h2><strong>How will be Aditya-L1's journey?</strong></h2>

<p>Aditya-L1 will first be placed in a low earth orbit by ISRO's PSLV-C57 rocket. After that, the spacecraft's orbit will be made more elliptical. On-board propulsion will be used to launch the spacecraft towards L1 point. As it moves towards L1, the spacecraft will exit Earth's gravitational Sphere of Influence (SOI). After it exits the SOI, the spacecraft will begin its cruise phase. It will then be placed in a large halo orbit around the L1 point. The spacecraft will take four months to reach its destination.</p>

<p>It aims to study solar winds, which can cause disturbance on Earth and are commonly seen as "auroras".</p>

"The preparation for Aditya-L1 is going really well. At the Satish Dhawan Space Centre, final checks are being carried out on the spacecraft and the PSLV rocket(mission number C57) for this mission is being assembled," A.Rajarajan, the Director of the spaceport told WION.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Speaking to WION after the successful landing of Chandrayaan-3, he said that the Aditya-L1 mission is to be launched in the first week of September. So far, the Indian space agency has launched six missions in the year 2023. While four of these missions were for India's own national and scientific purposes, two of them have been missions for foreign customers. ISRO has had a great year with successes in all launch missions.&nbsp;</p>

Queried about how the spaceport is handling various missions simultaneously, Rajarajan told WION that the team had learnt several lessons during the pandemic and accordingly made their work processes more optimised and efficient. He indicated how ISRO had been able to fulfil both national and commercial missions, while also making arrangements for Indian space sector startups to use their facilities for development and testing activities.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Queried about how the launch calendar looked for the next four months, he said that there could be four launches including Aditya-L1, experimental flights as part of Gaganyaan development programme, followed by PSLV and GSLV launches.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In 2022, the Indian Space agency has designated senior Solar Scientist Dr. Sankarasubramanian as the Principal Scientist of the 'Aditya-L1' Mission. He heads the Space Astronomy Group (SAG) of ISRO's UR Rao Satellite Centre, Bengaluru and has contributed to ISRO missions such as Chandrayaan 1 &amp; 2, AstroSat, in several capacities.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Why the mission is named Aditya-L1?</strong></h2>

<p>The name of the mission is taken from the Sanskrit word ‘Aditya’ which means related to the Sun or God of the Sun. The L1 stands for Lagrange point 1 of the Sun-Earth system. The Aditya-L1’s spacecraft will be placed in a halo orbit around this Lagrange point 1 which is about 1.5 million km from the Earth.</p>

<p>As per ISRO, “A satellite placed in the halo orbit around the L1 point has the major advantage of continuously viewing the Sun without any occultation/eclipses. This will provide a greater advantage of observing the solar activities and its effect on space weather in real-time.”</p>

<h2><strong>History of Aditya-L1</strong></h2>

<p>Aditya-L1 as a mission was conceptualised in January 2008 by the Advisory Committee for Space Research. It was initially envisaged as a small 400 kg, Low Earth Observation (LEO) satellite with a coronagraph to study the solar corona. An experimental budget of Rs 3 crore was allocated for the financial year 2016–2017.</p>

<p>The scope of the mission has since been expanded and it is now planned to be a comprehensive solar and space environment observatory to be placed at the Lagrange point 1. As of July 2019, the mission has an allocated cost of ₹378.53 crore, excluding launch costs.</p>

<p>Chandrayaan-3, the third lunar mission which was launched on July 14, is also scheduled to land on the lunar surface on August 23-24. Within a few days, the ISRO will also launch its maiden Sun mission Aditya-L1.</p>
