Indian transport minister Nitin Gadkari said on Tuesday that the passengers sitting at the back of a car will now&nbsp;be fined if found not wearing seatbelts. The comment came just two days after former TATA Sons chairman Cyrus Mistry died in a car crash near Mumbai. Mistry was sitting at the back of his Mercedes without any seatbelt and was killed when the speeding car crashed into a divider near Palgham.&nbsp;

"Already, it's mandatory to wear a seatbelt on&nbsp;the rear seat but people are not following it. There will be a siren if the people in the rear seat don't wear belts like for the front seats. And if they don't wear belts, there will be a fine," Gadkari told NDTV before adding that "at any cost, lives have to be saved".&nbsp;

When asked about the quantum of the fine, Gadkari said that it will start from around $13 and its main purpose will be to reduce the number of road accident fatalities by almost 50 per cent.&nbsp;

He also explained that the government will be working towards the compulsory installation of airbags in the back seat of every car and as a result, they will be concentrating on increasing its production.&nbsp;

Gadkari also said that India is planning to make it compulsory for car manufacturers to include an alarm system specifically for the rear seats also besides making&nbsp;it mandatory for the passengers to wear them failing which they will be fined.

"Because of this Cyrus accident we have decided ... an alarm will continue to beep until those sitting in the rear seats put on their seat belt," Nitin Gadkari said. "There is already an alarm for those in the front seats, and now it will beep for rear seat belts too," he added, according to Business Standard.&nbsp;

Rajpath literally means "king's way" and was constructed in the early 20th century during British control. In honour of King George V, it was given that name.

Race Course Road was renamed Lok Kalyan Marg in 2015, and that's where the Prime Minister's official house is.

Additionally, streets with Mughal emperor names have been renamed. APJ Abdul Kalam Road replaced Aurangzeb Road as of 2015.

In addition, Teen Murti Chowk was&nbsp;renamed Teen Murti Haifa Chowk in 2018. There have been numerous suggestions to rename Akbar Road, but nothing has been implemented as of yet.

The Central Vista redevelopment project, the nation's power corridor, also calls for a new triangular Parliament building, a shared central secretariat, a new prime minister's mansion, an office for the prime minister, and a new vice-presidential enclave.

State-of-the-art food booths, red granite walkways with vegetation all around, vending zones, parking lots, and round-the-clock security will be present on the redesigned Central Vista Avenue along the Rajpath. According to National Crime Records Bureau data, over 1.55 lakh lives were lost in road crashes across India in 2021 - an average of 426 daily or 18 every single hour - which is the highest death figures recorded in any calendar year so far.&nbsp;

Besides the deaths, 3.71 lakh people were also injured in 4.03 lakh road accidents across the country in 2021.

The NCRB report's data for 2021 also suggested that public transport, like buses, was safer than private modes of conveyance, like motorcycles, cars etc.&nbsp;

The highest number of road accidents every year is attributed to negligent driving and speeding.&nbsp;

This raises a big concern over road safety in India. Experts say, taking care of yourself while driving is the most important thing to do by using safety accessories in the car. And one must know the safety functions like airbags and seat belts in the car.&nbsp;

In India, people wearing seat belts is a rare sight. All the cars have rear seat belts (back seat belts), but we have seen very few people using them in India’s financial capital city Mumbai.

"When I am driving locally, I do not use the safety feature of the back seat belt. But when we are on the national highway, we use it sometimes but maximum times we forget to use the back seat belt", says Parth Shah, a resident of Mumbai.&nbsp;

Another Mumbai resident said she never used&nbsp;the back seat belt at all as she doesn’t find it necessary.&nbsp;

What we also observed was a lack of awareness regarding rules. People are aware of rules for front <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/condolences-pour-in-following-death-of-former-tata-sons-head-cyrus-mistry-in-road-accident-512859">passengers to wear seat belts</a>, but maximum were unaware that there is a rule for passengers in the rear seats (back seats) as well.&nbsp;

As stated in Rule 138 (3) of the Central Motor Vehicle Rules (CMVR),&nbsp;“The driver and the person seated in the front seat or the persons occupying front facing rear seats, as the case may be, wear the seat belts while the vehicle is in motion. Failure to do so can result in a fine of Rs 1,000”.&nbsp;

According to World Health Organisation (WHO), the use of rear seat belts can prevent fatality by 25 per cent, and also prevent excess injury or death for the front seat passenger.&nbsp;

Wearing a seat belt while sitting in the rear seat can help reduce the chances of a fatal injury considerably. In case of a collision, an unbuckled passenger will be pushed forward to collide with the front seat or even the dashboard.&nbsp;

DSP Harsimran Singh Pal commented on the incident. He said, "What we have come to know so far is that they had permission to organise the show. However, no one would be spared if a mistake was committed on their part."

"Strict action will be taken according to the law. We have admitted all the injured people to the civil hospital."

Another witness claimed that the organisers tried to suppress the public at the scene. The probe is still going on.
