"It's a classical break in the monsoon that we are seeing for close to a week now. It may last till around August 16, when a low-pressure system may form over the Bay of Bengal followed by another a few days later," veteran meteorologist M Rajeevan told the publication.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Rajeevan said these systems were likely to bring rain to states such as Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and some adjoining areas, as per the India Meteorological Department's (IMD) forecast. However, the veteran meteorologist pointed out that widespread rainfall across the country was unlikely after August 20.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>IMD issues fresh rain alerts</strong></h2>

<p>Meanwhile, the IMD issued fresh rain alerts on Friday. In a statement, the IMD said, "Isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall likely to continue over Uttarakhand during next 5 days and over Bihar, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh and Assam &amp; Meghalaya during next 2 days and isolated heavy rainfall thereafter for subsequent 3 days."</p>

<p>"Subdued rainfall activity likely over rest parts of the country during next one week and likely revival of active Monsoon conditions thereafter," the statement added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The weather bureau said it is likely there would be light/moderate scattered to fairly widespread rainfall with isolated heavy rainfall over Himachal Pradesh till Sunday, over Uttarakhand till Tuesday (August 15), over Punjab and Haryana till Sunday, and over West Uttar Pradesh till Monday (August 14).&nbsp;</p>

<p>In east India, "Light/moderate fairly widespread to widespread rainfall with isolated heavy rainfall activity very likely over Bihar, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal &amp; Sikkim during 11th -13th August; over Gangetic West Bengal on 12th &amp; 13th and over Jharkhand on 12th &amp; 13th August. Isolated very heavy rainfall likely over Bihar and Sub-Himalaya West Bengal &amp; Sikkim on 11th &amp; 12th August," the statement further said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>India and China are preparing for their 19th round of Corps Commander Level talks on Monday, August 14, scheduled to take place at the Chushul-Moldo meeting point in the Eastern Ladakh sector, ANI news agency reported citing defence sources.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“The Indian side would be led by Fire and Fury Corps Commander Lt Gen Rashim Bali for the talks with representatives of the Chinese military on August 14. Officials from Ministry of External Affairs and ITBP are also expected to be part of the talks The two sides are likely to discuss the issues related to DBO and CNN junction along with other matters. India would also be pressing for disengagement from the Eastern Ladakh front,” the sources told ANI.&nbsp;</p>

<p>This comes as there have been continued tensions between India and China along their disputed border regions. One of the deadliest clashes occurred in June 2020, when a violent skirmish took place between Indian and Chinese troops in the Galwan Valley. This clash resulted in loss of lives of about 20 Indian soldiers, and an estimated higher casualty on the other side though the Chinese never shared the fatality figures.</p>

<p>The latest&nbsp;engagement, expected to take place on Monday, is aimed to address the military standoff between the two nations.</p>

<h2><strong>Three-year military standoff</strong></h2>

<p>A prolonged military standoff between India and China began in May 2020. It has led to a series of confrontations. The Chinese attempted to forcefully alter the status quo on the Line of Actual Control (LAC), resulting in tensions that have persisted for the past three years.</p>

<p>There have been heightened construction activities along the border regions by both countries, aimed at reinforcing their positions. Military talks focusing on disengagement and de-escalation along the Line of Actual Control in eastern Ladakh commenced shortly after the initial confrontations between the Indian and Chinese forces.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Through previous&nbsp;talks, both sides managed to disengage from various confrontation points and relocate to new positions, aiming to prevent clashes and promote peaceful resolution.</p>

<p>ANI while quoting sources said that the Indian side is committed to achieving an amicable resolution while safeguarding its interests in the region. They added that in order to match the Chinese deployments opposite eastern Ladakh, India has stationed more than 50,000 troops in the area.&nbsp;</p>

<p>This move marks a strategic shift as the newly dubbed 'Defender of the North' squadron, also known as Tridents, replaces the MiG-21 squadron that historically guarded against Pakistani threats.</p>

<p>Indian Air Force squadron leader Vipul Sharma told ANI about the MiG-29's suitability for this purpose.&nbsp;"Srinagar lies in the centre of Kashmir valley and its elevation is higher than plains. It is strategically better to place an aircraft with a higher weight-to-thrust ratio and less response time due to proximity to the border and is equipped with better avionics and long-range missiles. The MiG-29 fulfills all these criteria due to which we are capable of taking on the enemies on both fronts," the pilot said.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>MiG-29 over MiG-21</strong></h2>

<p>The MiG-29 offers significant advantages over the MiG-21, which had effectively safeguarded the Kashmir valley for years and notably shot down an F-16 in 2019 following the Balakot air strikes on Pakistani terrorist installations.</p>

<p>"The fighter aircraft have also been provided with the capability to jam the enemy aircraft's capabilities during times of conflict,"&nbsp;officials said, reported ANI.</p>

<h2><strong>Night operations</strong></h2>

<p>Squadron leader Shivam Rana reportedly said that the upgraded MiG-29s can operate with night vision goggles, boasting extended range capabilities due to air-to-air refuelling capacity.</p>

<p>Notably, the aircraft now incorporates air-to-ground armaments, a new addition.</p>

<p>"We have also included the air-to-ground armament which was not there earlier. The biggest capability of the aircraft are the pilots which are handpicked by the Indian Air Force to serve on these aircraft," pilot Rana said.</p>

<h2><strong>Deployment&nbsp;</strong></h2>

<p>The MiG-29s were deployed to the Srinagar air base in January this year and have since conducted extensive flights across the Kashmir valley and the Ladakh sector. They stand poised to swiftly respond to any attempted airspace violations by China.</p>

It is strategically better to place an aircraft with a higher weight-to-thrust ratio and less response time due to proximity to the border and is equipped with better avionics and long-range missiles. The MiG-29 fulfills all these criteria due to which we are capable of taking on the enemies on both fronts," the pilot said. "The fighter aircraft have also been provided with the capability to jam the enemy aircraft's capabilities during times of conflict," officials said, reported ANI. Night operations Squadron leader Shivam Rana reportedly said that the upgraded MiG-29s can operate with night vision goggles, boasting extended range capabilities due to air-to-air refuelling capacity. Notably, the aircraft now incorporates air-to-ground armaments, a new addition. This purchase will reduce Antfin's ownership to 13.5 per cent, relinquishing its status as the largest stakeholder. Notably, China's Alibaba sold its entire stake in Paytm in February, while Softbank Group Corp has gradually lowered its stake, now at 9.18 per cent.
