The entire Indian sports fraternity was in disbelief as soon as the news broke Wednesday but Phogat, while speaking to coaches, called it 'part of the game,' reported news agency PTI.

"It sent a shockwave through the wrestling contingent. The girls were feeling pretty low after the news broke. We met Vinesh and tried to console her. She was brave. She told us, 'it's hard luck that we missed the medal, but it is part of the game'," said Virender Dahiya, India women wrestling national coach, reported PTI.

Indian Olympic contingent's chief physician Dinshaw Pardiwala informed earlier this evening that the support staff did all they could to bring the weight down but unfortunately failed. She was later hospitalised at a local polyclinic as a precaution.

Phogat was earlier discharged from the hospital after recuperating from dehydration for trying to lose weight ahead of the final.

IOA chief PT Usha, who rushed to Paris following the unfortunate incident, said: "Vinesh's disqualification is very shocking and I met her at the Olympic Village Poly Clinic a short while ago and I showed her complete support of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), Government of India and the whole country."

Sri Lanka proved too good for India in the recently concluded ODI series, beating them in the three match series 2-0 for the first time in 27 years. Having lost the T20Is (0-3) earlier, the hosts needed to turn the tables around quickly, and they did that magnificently. Maheesh Theekshana, a white-ball specialist, explained how Sri Lanka plotted India’s downfall in the One Dayers.

Theekshana has played a few seasons with the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the Indian Premier League before, besides touring India for a white-ball series in recent years.

Theekshana elaborated that he had observed the pattern and noticed that the Indian players play more on good batting wickets and on grounds with smaller boundaries, and playing them at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, where square boundaries are wider, would benefit the hosts, which eventually happened.

Chasing 249 in the final game on Wednesday (August 7), India, for the third time in the series, got off to a flyer, with Captain Rohit Sharma again leading from the front. Although he failed to score his third fifty in the series, he took the attack to the opposition from the word go.

However, once he lost his wicket, the Sri Lankan spinners, mainly Dunith Wellalage, who picked a five-for, tore into the Indian batting order, wrapping them up for a lowly 138.

"They (India) usually play on good wickets and small boundaries in India. We knew playing in Premadasa, if there's a little bit of turn, we can take advantage because we have good spinners," Theekshana, who picked two wickets in the 3rd ODI, said after the match.

‘Win boosts our confidence’

Theekshana added that Sri Lankan batters are used to playing on such turning wickets and thus managed to survive the Indian spin attack comfortably. He also admitted that the ODI series win was a confidence booster for him and the team.

"Even in domestic, the wickets are like this, and our batters know how to play," Theekshana continued while praising the Sri Lankan batting unit.

"For me, it's a confidence booster as a team. We lost the T20 series 3-0. The whole team was disappointed, and we took it as motivation. Very happy to play the last game and win the series after 1997. It's a huge victory for us, and I am really proud to be part of the XI," the off-spinner added.

Sri Lanka will now travel to England for three Tests, starting August 21, and Team India will face Bangladesh in the two Tests of the home season, beginning in September.

‘Indians usually play on good wickets and smaller boundaries’ – Theekshana on how SL plotted India’s loss

Wrestler Vinesh Phogat - who can be rightfully called India's shining armour in the Paris Olympics 2024 - stood at the cusp of making history when her dreams of winning a gold medal were shattered due to her disqualification for being overweight. After getting disqualified, Phogat announced her retirement as she said, "Mom, Wrestling has defeated me, I have lost. I lost…my courage is all broken, I don't have any more strength now".

This is not the first time that the athlete has faced a tough situation.

It was only last year when Phogat was leading an anti-sexual harassment demonstration against Indian politician and then president of the Indian wrestling federation Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.

Here's the story of the woman whose name will be emboldened in gold in the history of wrestling even without the gold medal.

Who is wrestler Vinesh Phogat?

Vinesh Phogat is an Indian wrestler who was carrying the Olympic story of hope which turned into a heartbreak after being disqualified from the final match in the women’s 50kg freestyle category on Wednesday (Aug 7).

She is a three-time Olympian from Haryana and the first Indian woman wrestler to clinch a gold at the Commonwealth and Asian Games.

She has won multiple medals at the World Wrestling Championships and is the first Indian athlete to be nominated for the Laureus World Sports Awards in 2019.

While participating in the 2024 Paris Olympics, Phogat emerged as the first international wrestler to have defeated reigning gold medalist and four times World Champion Yui Susaki in women's 50kg wrestling and also became India's first female wrestler to reach an Olympic final.

In a heartbreaking twist of fate, Phogat was disqualified because she failed to weigh more than 50kg which was required for the competition on Wednesday morning (August 7), as stated by the Indian Olympic Association (IOA).

“Despite the best efforts by the team through the night, she weighed in a few grams over 50kg this morning,” said the IOA, in a statement posted on X.

The wrestlers also took the extreme step of throwing their Olympic medals into the Ganges River in Haridwar as a mark of protest.

India Olympic contingent's chief physician Dinshaw Pardiwala has revealed that wrestler Vinesh Phogat's weight had increased post her participation in the semi-final bout.

"The process of weight cut prior to the weight in the morning involves a calculated restriction of food and water. And besides this, the athlete needs to sweat and that sweating is done with sauna and with exercise," said Dr Pardiwala in a video statement provided by the Indian Olympic Association (IOA).

"Now this weight cut has the benefit of putting you into a lighter weight category, but does cause weakness and energy depletion, and this is counterproductive to participation."

"So most wrestlers will thereafter go in for some amount of energy restoration with limited water and high energy foods. And these are usually given after the way in the calculation from the nutritionist, which is done is athlete specific. And Vinesh's nutritionist felt that the usual amount that she takes is about 1.5 kg total over the day, which gives enough energy for the bouts.

"Sometimes there's also a factor of a rebound weight gain following competition now, Vinesh had three bouts and hence to prevent any dehydration, some amount of water had to be given."

"We found that her post participation weight was increased more than normal and the coach initiated the normal process of weight cut that he has always employed with Vinesh."

"This is something that's worked with her for a long period of time. He felt confident that this would be achieved and over the night we went ahead with the weight cut procedure."

"However, in the morning we found that despite all of our efforts, her weight was 100 grammes over her 50 kilogramme weight category and hence she was disqualified. We have tried all possible drastic measures throughout the night, including cutting off her hair, shortening her clothes. And despite all of this, we could not make that 50 kg weight category," concluded Pardiwala.

Vinesh will now return from the Olympics empty-handed instead of what could have been a historic medal for an Indian women wrestler.

Paris Olympics 2024: 'Not Vinesh Phogat's fault...,' WFI president Sanjay Singh reacts to her disqualification

Vinesh Phogat assured a medal for India after entering the final of women's wrestling at Paris Olympics. But her victory was followed by a slew of political potshots, given her participation in protests against the ruling government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Opposition Congress took the opportunity to take potshots at Modi, asking him if he would congratulate her like he does for all sports achievers, while Kangana Renaut, an MP from Modi's ruling BJP, reminded Phogat that at one time the wrestler had said she would 'dig Modi's grave'.

Reacting to the news, Kangana Renaut, actress and BJP lawmaker from Himachal Pradesh, pointed out that Phogat, at the height of wrestlers' protest, had said she would dig the grave of Modi, and yet was allowed to take part in Olympics.

"Fingers crossed for India's first Gold Medal. Vinesh Phogat at one point took part in protests where she raised the slogans of 'Modi teri khabr Khudegi' [Modi, will dig your grave]. Yet she was given the opportunity to represent the nation and best of the training, coaches and facilities. Beauty of democrac and a great leader," she posted on her Instagram stories.

Vinesh Phogat and the wrestlers' protest

In 2023, Vinesh Phogat along with some male and female wrestlers began a protest against Brajbhushan Singh, then a BJP lawmaker and the chief of Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), alleging that he molested or sexually abused several wrestlers. In spite of their long protest, Singh refused to quit, and the government cracked down on the protest, forcibly removing them from Delhi streets. The protest eventually became a larger anti-government agitation. Singh eventually exited as WFI chief.

Even before the Indian wrestlers were to go to Paris, there were several uncertainties as to whether they will be allowed or able to participate.

Vinesh Phogat's feat at Olympics On Tuesday (Aug 6), the 29-year-old became the first Indian woman to enter an Olympics wrestling final. On a single day, Phogat defeated three top wrestlers. She beat Cuba's Yusneylis Guzman in the semifinal of women's 50kg freestyle category, after stunning defending champion Yui Susaki of Japan and eighth-seeded Ukrainian Oksana Livach in the previous bouts. On Wednesday, she will face American Sarah Hildebrandt in the final. How opposition Congress reacted to Vinesh Phogat's Olympics achievement Rahul Gandhi, India's leader of Opposition said in a post on X: "Today, along with Vinesh, the entire country is emotional after defeating three top wrestlers of the world in a single day. All those who denied the struggle of Vinesh and her teammates, and even questioned their intentions and abilities, have got their answer." "Today, the entire power system that had made India shed tears of blood collapsed in front of her brave daughter. This is the identity of champions, they give their answer from the field. Best wishes Vinesh. The echo of your success in Paris can be heard clearly till Delhi," said the Congress leader. आज भारत की बहादुर बेटी के सामने सत्ता का… pic.twitter.com/MzfIrYfRog — Rahul Gandhi (@RahulGandhi) August 6, 2024 × Rahul Gandhi's sister and Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi wrote on X: "I know that for you this is not just a tough match of Olympics.
