Team India added 109 runs in the first session on day two of the third Test against New Zealand in Mumbai but lost Rishabh Pant on a well-made 60. The hosts cut the deficit to 40, as their scorecard read 195 for five in 43 overs at lunch. Like Pant, Shubman Gill also completed his fifty, cementing his place at number three in this format.

India began day two on a quieter note, with Gill and Pant taking time to settle down. The left-handed keeper-batter unleashed soon after, with the pair targeting Ajaz Patel, who accounted for two wickets late on day one to dent India’s momentum.&nbsp;

While Pant took the attack to the spinner, launching sixes against his flighted deliveries, Gill kept finding gaps at will off Glenn Phillips and Patel.&nbsp;

At a point when they put on the fifth gear, Gill miscued one straight to deep long-on, only for the substitute fielder Mark Chapman to drop his catch on 45. The right-handed batter made most of this chance and completed another fifty batting at his new position.&nbsp;

New Zealand then introduced leg-spinner Ish Sodhi to the attack, who trapped Pant, plumb in the front on 60 soon after to put India’s back against the wall. Instead of sending Sarfaraz Khan in at number seven, India sent Ravindra Jadeja, continuing the left-right combination.

<h2>What’s next for India?</h2>

India is running a lost race here, having surrendered the home Test series to New Zealand for the first time in 12 years. However, the only silver lining for the hosts would be to win this Test, saving themselves from the embarrassment of getting whitewashed at home in Tests for the first time.

With India trailing by 40 runs, they need a handsome partnership between Gill and Jadeja to take the lead and pile on it, putting pressure back on the Kiwis.&nbsp;

For India to take advantage of this situation, they must take a lead of over 100 runs; given Sarfaraz, Ashwin and Sundar are yet to bat, they are in for a long day with the bat in hand.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, considering the pitch on offer will assist the spinners, the Indian spin trio of Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin and Washington Sundar would be licking their lips over the same in the second innings.

Ruud van Nistelrooy is well aware that his interim manager stint at Manchester United will be a short one, but the Dutchman said on Thursday that he expected to still be in charge for this weekend's Premier League clash at home to Chelsea.

Former United striker Van Nistelrooy stepped up from his assistant coach role at the club after the sacking of Erik ten Hag on Monday, and Sporting coach Ruben Amorim is widely expected to be installed as manager at Old Trafford very soon.

The temporary coach got off to a winning start with a 5-2 League Cup quarter-final win over visitors Leicester City on Wednesday, and at Thursday's press conference it was suggested he will still be there for the game with Chelsea on Sunday.

"I am guessing that too, so yes, it's going to be a short job as an interim, that was communicated very clear and I was happy with that," Van Nistelrooy told reporters.

"Obviously, it was difficult that Erik had to leave, I was very disappointed, with very mixed feelings about that, but you have to switch the mindset to win because 75,000 people are waiting and celebrating and millions are watching at home."

While the 48-year-old Van Nistelrooy accepts his new job will be a short-lived one, he plans to return to his previous role once a new manager is installed.

"I decided to come back here for a very important reason. I came as an assistant to help the club forward and I'm still very motivated to do so in any capacity," he said. "As an assistant, and now as an interim manager, and after that I go back to my assistant contract that I have here for this season and next.

"I'm very motivated to stay here and help the club forward, that's my absolute goal. I can speak to you about my side of the story and after, when the new manager is signed and conversations take place, we have to see how things develop."

Van Nistelrooy, while upset about the departure of compatriot Ten Hag, knows in this job it is results that matter.

United finished a disappointing eighth last season and, while an FA Cup final win over Manchester City may have helped prolong Ten Hag's stay, four losses in the opening nine league games leaving his side 14th ultimately proved his downfall.

"In the end, it is also clear in football that it is the results and Erik also said, in pre-season we had new staff and all were very positive and all working hard to bring the club forward," Van Nistelrooy said.

"There are things you can't explain sometimes. So many games we felt we could get a better result, talking Crystal Palace, West Ham, Porto, Fenerbahce (in the Europa League), but we also know it is about results and that is part of our job."

Talks are reportedly ongoing between United and Sporting, with Amorim saying he will not provide any news until after his side's next game on Friday, and Van Nistelrooy too was giving nothing away when asked about the Portuguese coach.

"Is he already announced? So, we don't know," the interim manager said. "Again, what the future will bring, we will see."

PL: Ruud van Nistelrooy to stay in charge of Manchester United’s home game against Chelsea

Sri Lanka will host Australia for two Tests and one ODI early next year, with World Test Championship (WTC) points on the line. Regardless of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy result, this two-match Test series in Galle will play a crucial role in deciding who goes through to the WTC Final, scheduled at Lord’s next year.

While the Tests will hold the higher importance, the one-off ODI added to the schedule, the venue of which is undecided yet, is for both teams to get some match practice ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy in Pakistan. The two Tests will be played on Jan 29 to Feb 2 and Feb 6-10, with the One-Day game scheduled for February 13.

Per the ICC, Pakistan will stage the eight-team tournament from February 19 to March 9.

Meanwhile, the last time Australia toured Sri Lanka for two Tests in 2022, the series ended in a 1-1 draw. The travelling side won the first Test before Prabath Jayasuriya picked 12 wickets in the second match to level the series. However, there is a higher chance that Australia captain Pat Cummins might miss the series for the birth of his second child.

"We'll see what that looks like closer to the time. We've got a couple of players in Mitch Marsh and Travis Head taking paternity leave at the moment. So, we respect that if that were to unfold for that particular time and if he wants to miss a Test. If he's got bigger things to take care of than a Test match in Sri Lanka, then that's fine with us,” Australia head coach Andrew McDonald said.

<h2>Changes in squad for SL Tests</h2>

Australia could make several changes to their Test squad for the Sri Lanka series, with white-ball star all-rounder Glenn Maxwell in contention for a return to red-ball cricket. Besides, left-arm spinner Matt Kuhnemann could also return to the side, with former Australian spinner Steve O’Keefe urging the selectors to prioritise red-ball spinners to be picked for the Sri Lanka tour.

"I think if we're really going to be serious about the young spinners going over there, whoever is going to accompany Nathan [Lyon], is the Big Bash the best preparation?" Steve O’Keefe said in a chat with ESPNcricinfo.&nbsp;

"I'd be encouraging the selectors to let these spinners be going earlier and then I'd be encouraging those spinners to practice with a red ball in between Big Bash games,” he added.&nbsp;

Sri Lanka to host Australia for two Tests, one-off ODI early next year

Mikel Arteta says Arsenal are "right in the mix" at the top of the Premier League despite their stumbles over the past two weeks. The third-placed Gunners, hunting their first top-flight title since 2004, are five points behind leaders Manchester City after nine games, following a shock 2-0 defeat to Bournemouth and a 2-2 draw against Liverpool.

They face a tricky away trip to Newcastle on Saturday, desperate to ensure the gap does not grow wider.

Arteta, whose team have pushed City all the way in the past two seasons, was asked on Friday whether he was concerned over the points difference, with Liverpool also four points ahead.

"You want to be first, you want to win every game," said the Spaniard. "We know the situations that we have to play with this season, but we're right in the mix.

"We know the tough challenge that we're going to face tomorrow, but we're fully ready for that."

Arteta said his injury-hit team had showed an "incredible capacity" to compete against Liverpool last week.

"Unfortunately, a lot of things happened that we didn't even plan for," he said.

"I was suspecting, with the size of the squad that we had, to be very adaptable in the season and that's something that we worked on from day one in pre-season.

"But obviously, not to be that adaptable, especially in certain scenarios, but for sure the team showed an incredible capacity to compete, to be better than the opponent in many moments."

Arteta has ruled defender Riccardo Calafiori and long-term absentee Martin Odegaard out of the game at St James' Park while Takehiro Tomiyasu is still missing.

The Arsenal boss said he was unsure about Ben White's availability but Gabriel Magalhaes could feature.

Newcastle are 12th in the Premier League table, without a win in their past five games, but Arteta warned they would prove a stiff challenge.

"They're a fantastic team. They're really well coached, they're very intense," he said. "It's a great stadium to play in. You know what you're going to face there, so we're looking forward to it."

Arteta also spoke about Ethan Nwaneri's "rare" talent after the 17-year-old scored his third goal of the season in the midweek 3-0 win against Preston in the League Cup.

"I think the biggest thing is to push him, and then when he is being pushed, you always grab him right behind to make sure that he's always stable and protected," he said. "But with this talent, you have to push him. The protection is necessary to keep an eye on him and be at the right distance, but he needs to see that he can fly and don't clip any wings."

Mikel Arteta insists Arsenal ‘right in the mix’ in Premier League title race despite latest stumbles

Ruben Amorim was Friday named as the new manager of Manchester United, replacing the sacked Erik ten Hag. The 39-year-old Portuguese coach, who won two Primeira Liga titles with Sporting Lisbon, has signed a deal until 2027 and will join the club on November 11.

"Manchester United is delighted to announce the appointment of Ruben Amorim as head coach of the men's first team, subject to work visa requirements," the club said on its website. "He will join until June 2027 with a club option of an additional year, once he has fulfilled his obligations to his current club."

United described Amorim as "one of the most exciting and highly rated young coaches in European football".

"Highly decorated as both a player and coach, his titles include winning the Primeira Liga twice in Portugal with Sporting CP -- the first of which was the club's first title in 19 years," the club statement said.

Ruud van Nistelrooy will continue to take charge of the team until Amorim arrives at Old Trafford during the November international break.

His first game in charge will be away at struggling Ipswich on November 24.

United sacked Ten Hag on Monday after a 2-1 defeat by West Ham left them languishing 14th in the Premier League, with just three wins from nine matches.

<h2>Top target</h2>

Amorim quickly emerged as the club's top target and Sporting issued a statement to the Lisbon stock exchange earlier this week confirming United were willing to meet his release clause of 10 million euros ($11 million).

Amorim was peppered with questions about his prospective switch at his press conference ahead of Sporting's home league game against Estrela on Friday but he remained tight-lipped.

"It is a negotiation between two clubs," he said on Thursday. "It's never easy. Even with the clauses it's never easy, they have to talk."

Prior to Wednesday's 5-2 win against Leicester in the fourth round of the League Cup, United had won just one of their past eight games in all competitions.

Ten Hag won the League Cup and FA Cup during his spell at Old Trafford but the club have not won the Premier League since 2013, in Alex Ferguson's last season in charge.

Ferguson won the Premier League title 13 times but since his departure five permanent managers have come and gone without adding to the club's 20 top-flight titles.

Van Nistelrooy said Thursday he was "motivated" to help turn United's season around and wants to stay at the club as he prepares the players for a high-profile match against Chelsea on Sunday.

Asked if it is his expectation that he will remain as an assistant under the new United boss Van Nistelrooy, a former PSV Eindhoven manager, said: "We will see but it's a contract situation that I'm in, and my desire to help the club go forward.

"So, I can speak to you about my side of this story, and after that, when the new situation is occurring, when the new manager is signing and conversations take place, we have to see how things develop."

Ruben Amorim replaces Erik Ten Hag as Manchester United’s new manager

The BGT-bound Indian Test team was scheduled to play a three-day intra-squad match with India-A (from November 15-17) at the WACA ahead of the first Test against Australia in Perth starting November 22; but, with BCCI scraping this idea, the Rohit Sharma-led side will not play any warm-up game in the lead-up to the five-match Test series. Instead, the board has decided that the team will train during that window, including net sessions at the venue.

India vs India-A was supposed to be a closed-door warm-up game per BCCI's request, but with the Indian Cricket Board changing plans at the last moment, the team will continue training as they eye record a third successive Test series win Down Under.

On the other hand, Australia will train at the venue after India’s stint in an important preparatory camp for some players who haven’t played red-ball cricket lately.&nbsp;

BGT: No practice game for India ahead of Perth Test as BCCI scraps intra-squad match at WACA

India's reserve player for Australia Tests, seamer Mukesh Kumar, picked six wickets in the first innings against Australia-A, and batters Sai Sudharsan and Devdutt Padikkal remained unbeaten on 96 and 80, respectively, in the second innings to script India-A’s comeback in the first unofficial Test in Mackay.&nbsp;

On the other hand, the BGT-bound India batter Abhimanyu Easwaran failed to leave any mark even across two innings as he departed on just 12, five more than his first-inning total in the lead-up to the marquee series Down Under.

The left-handed pair of Sai and Padikkal saved India’s sinking ship with a remarkable comeback. They took their time before opening their arms during the final two sessions. Both looked composed at the crease, playing through the line without being beaten enough. Their 178-run partnership thus far reminded everyone of how everyone should bat in these conditions, where the ball is bound to do enough any time of the day.&nbsp;

With two days remaining in this unofficial Test and India leading by 120 runs and eight wickets remaining, the travelling side has their nose in the front.

Jamal Musiala hit a first-half hat-trick as Bayern Munich won 4-0 at Mainz to move into the last 16 of the German Cup.

Harry Kane set up Musiala's first just two minutes in, finding him 10 metres out from goal for the 21-year-old to hammer home. Musiala tapped in a rebound from a Kane header to score his second, the England-raised Germany forward was offside, but there is no VAR in the German Cup until the next round.

Former Manchester City winger Leroy Sane made it three just ahead of half-time and Musiala then pounced on a loose ball in the box to score his third, and Bayern's fourth, just before the break to claim his first hat-trick.

"Even without his goals, he can make the difference," Joshua Kimmich said of Musiala.

Frankfurt were reduced to 10 men when Arthur Theate was sent off for a handball outside the box just 15 minutes in.

French forward Hugo Ekitike put the five-time winners in front in first-half stoppage time but Gladbach's Ko Itakura levelled things up at the start of the second.

The Los Angeles Dodgers punished a string of defensive blunders from the New York Yankees to win the World Series on Wednesday with a stunning come-from-behind 7-6 victory. On a night of spellbinding drama at Yankee Stadium, the Dodgers sealed their second Major League Baseball championship crown in five seasons and eighth overall after recovering from 5-0 down to seal a 4-1 series victory.

The Yankees, who had kept the series alive with an 11-4 rout in game four on Tuesday, had looked poised to take the series back to Los Angeles for game six after home runs from Aaron Judge, Jazz Chisholm and Giancarlo Stanton fired them into a five-run lead.

Yankees starter Gerrit Cole meanwhile produced a masterful performance from the mound to keep the Dodgers' potent offensive line-up scoreless through four innings.

Ruud van Nistelrooy enjoyed a winning start as interim Manchester United manager by beating Leicester 5-2 to reach the League Cup quarter-finals on Wednesday as Manchester City crashed out 2-1 to Tottenham.

Arsenal and Liverpool were among the other sides to book their place in the last eight, but Chelsea were beaten 2-0 at Newcastle.

A United legend as a player, Van Nistelrooy was thrust into the role of caretaker boss after the Red Devils sacked Erik ten Hag on Monday following a dreadful start to the season.

Sporting Lisbon coach Ruben Amorim is the man the English giants have targeted to take over but are still in negotiations with the Portuguese champions to agree compensation for the 39-year-old.

According to reports in Portugal, Amorim will remain at Sporting for the next three matches before completing his move during the November international break.

"I came here as an assistant to help the club. I'm helping as long as I'm needed and in the future, in any capacity, I'm here to help the club build towards the future," said Van Nistelrooy. "The reaction of the players was excellent. They deserve the credit for a good win and I'm happy the crowd goes home with a nice night of football."

The Dutchman said before the game that United "can be unstoppable" when "players, staff and supporters pull together" and they cut loose by scoring four times in a thrilling first 45 minutes.

Casemiro's stunning effort into the top corner opened the scoring before Alejandro Garnacho swept home Diogo Dalot's cross to please a jubilant Van Nistelrooy on the touchline.

Bilal El Khannouss quickly pulled a goal back for the much-changed Foxes.

Bruno Fernandes' deflected free-kick restored United's two-goal cushion before Casemiro slammed home his third goal in two games.

Conor Coady grabbed another consolation for Leicester but United were not to be denied just a second win in nine games.

Fernandes rounded off the scoring when he pounced on a short back-pass to round Danny Ward and fire home.

United's reward is a trip to Tottenham in the last eight after they eliminated a City side without Erling Haaland.

Timo Werner slotted home his first goal since March from Dejan Kulusevski's inviting cross to open the scoring.

Pape Sarr's long-range strike doubled Spurs' lead before Matheus Nunes got an injury-hit City back into the tie in first-half stoppage time.

But they could not find an equaliser and Pep Guardiola showed where his priorities lie as Haaland remained on the bench for the full 90 minutes.

League Cup: Manchester United runs riot against Leicester City in first game of post-Ten Hag era

Ace Indian keeper-batter Rishabh Pant is on Chennai Super Kings (CSK) radar ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction. The latest reports suggest that Delhi Capitals have decided against retaining their captain and marquee player, and with Pant entering the mega auction, CSK are among several teams eyeing&nbsp;his services.

The five-time IPL champions, Chennai Super Kings, are said to retain their skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad, seamer Matheesha Pathirana and former captain and star player MS Dhoni (under the uncapped player category). Though CSK is undecided over retaining all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, Shivam Dube is another name they will take a final call on with the deadline fast approaching.

However, with MS Dhoni hinting at enjoying his last few years in the IPL, the franchise is looking forward to the future; who better than to replace Dhoni with India Test great Pant at CSK?&nbsp;

Meanwhile, the Chennai Super Kings understand the money and auction dynamics regarding Pant, with reports adding that they are keeping a surplus of INR 20 crore for him from their auction purse.&nbsp;

With Pant bringing along the captaincy perk, several teams will approach him during the mega auction, scheduled for late next month. To cut down on competition, CSK might put Jadeja’s name in the auction to make more room for Pant should the management decide to bring him on board from next season onwards.

Even if CSK retains four or five players, they’d have RTM options to be used for Jadeja or any other player.

<h2>If not Pant, then who else?</h2>

CSK will look at all options - although given how much they value their players, considering retaining their core group over the years, CSK will do everything possible to have Jadeja on board.&nbsp;

With Pant, CSK has to strategise well and plan accordingly, keeping an option open for someone else if the bid for Pant goes beyond their purse for him.&nbsp;

Another name the CSK could chase is India keeper-batter KL Rahul, who also said to part ways with the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) ahead of the auction.&nbsp;

<h2>Australian openers continue struggling</h2>

Given Cricket Australia is also searching for the right man to replace David Warner at the top, three of their prime options - rookie batter Sam Konstas, Marcus Harris and Cameron Bancroft failed to get going, with the returning Prasidh Krishna picking two of those three wickets.

With their failure with the bat, the pressure mounts on the selectors to pick between an emerging superstar and experienced ones for the first Test.
Easwaran in Indian Team

Picked as the backup opener for the five-match Test series against Australia, Easwaran might take up Rohit Sharma’s place at the top in one of the two matches, with the India captain reported missing either the first or second game due to personal reasons.

Part of India-A squads over the years, Easwaran, should he debut, will open alongside rookie Yashasvi Jaiswal, with Shubman Gill set to play at number three throughout. Though his rare failure against the new ball could cast doubt over his automatic selection, the selectors look ready to hand him his maiden India cap during this tour.

Meanwhile, the first set of Indian players will fly on November 10, while the others will re-link with the squad sooner.&nbsp;

Abhimanyu Easwaran, Nitish Reddy flop with bat as Australia-A skittle out India-A on 107 in first innings

England Test captain Ben Stokes revealed a masked gang broke into his house in Castle Eden in the North East while he was away on the recently concluded Pakistan tour. Stokes took to social media revealing what happened at his home in his absence, saying the worst was all that unfolded when his wife, Claire, and two children, Layton and Libby, were present inside the house at the time of the robbery; however, none of the family members were hurt during this event.

The incident occurred on October 17 when Stokes was playing the second Test in Multan. Stokes detailed everyone about this development upon his return to the UK earlier this week, revealing the robbery 'impacted his family’s mental and emotional state’.

Stokes also revealed the list of items stolen from his house, including jewellery, a designer bag, a medal awarded to him for his OBE, received in 2020 for his contribution to England cricket following a blockbuster 2019 summer, where his heroics led the hosts to win their maiden ODI World Cup, beating New Zealand in the most dramatic final, among others.

The England great further shared photos of all the items stolen from his house, appealing to the police or anyone else to help him recover these.&nbsp;

"By far the worst thing about this crime is that it was carried out whilst my wife and 2 young children were in the house," said Stokes in a statement accompanying the missing items.

"Thankfully, none of my family came to any physical harm. Understandably, however, the experience has had an impact on their emotional and mental state. All we can think about is how much worse this situation could have been.

"I am releasing photographs of some of the stolen items - which I hope may be easily identified - in the hope that we can find the people who are responsible for this.

"Although we have lost cherished possessions, to be clear, my sole motivation in sharing these photographs is not the recovery of material items. It is to catch the people who did this."

ALSO READ: RCB shares cryptic puzzle to reveal names of retained players ahead of IPL mega auction Stokes also revealed the list of items stolen from his house, including jewellery, a designer bag, a medal awarded to him for his OBE, received in 2020 for his contribution to England cricket following a blockbuster 2019 summer, where his heroics led the hosts to win their maiden ODI World Cup, beating New Zealand in the most dramatic final, among others. The England great further shared photos of all the items stolen from his house, appealing to the police or anyone else to help him recover these. It is to catch the people who did this." Squad announcement - Australia rest Test stars Pakistan T20Is; Glenn Maxwell in mix to lead Oz

Carlos Sainz cruised to an emotional victory for Ferrari ahead of McLaren's Lando Norris in Sunday's incident-filled Mexico City Grand Prix as Red Bull's series leader Max Verstappen was handed two 10-second penalties on his way to sixth.

The stewards took a dim view of Verstappen's aggressive driving, the Red Bull driver twice forcing his title rival Norris off the track.

Norris grabbed second from Charles Leclerc in the other Ferrari near the finish as the Briton enjoyed a major boost in his quest to deny Verstappen a fourth consecutive world championship.

The McLaren driver cut 10 points off the gap to Verstappen which now stands at 47 with four race weekends remaining.

Verstappen paid a heavy price for his show of ruthlessness with Norris commenting: "I knew what to expect from Max. I respect him a lot as a driver and I expected it but it was not very clean driving in my opinion.

"It was a very tough race and I spent a lot of it just trying to avoid crashes."&nbsp;

It was the second week in succession that the two title-chasers had clashed following a penalty for Norris at the United States Grand Prix.

McLaren boss Zak Brown described this latest example of Verstappen's aggressive streak as "ridiculous".

"Enough is enough. Let's just have some good clean racing moving forwards. I think the stewards are on it, I think that's clear by the penalties that were given. The stewards did a good job this weekend."

Asked about his drivers' crown prospects Norris said: "I'm just keeping my head down, we're doing good job as a team, focus on ourselves, that's all I can do for now."

Sainz meanwhile is ensuring he leaves Ferrari with his head held high as he switches next season to Williams to make way for seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton.

"Gracias Mexico!" said a beaming Sainz.&nbsp;

"It is incredible to see this crowd. I have felt their support all week and it gave me a lot of strength – I said I wanted one more win with Ferrari and to do it here with this mega-crowd is incredible."

It was Ferrari's first victory in Mexico since Alain Prost triumphed in 1990 – enabling them to move ahead of Red Bull in the constructors’ championship - and Sainz's second win of the season and fourth of his career.

Hamilton finished fourth ahead of his Mercedes team-mate George Russell.

Kevin Magnussen finished behind Verstappen in seventh to deliver Haas's best result in Mexico ahead of Oscar Piastri in the second McLaren, who started from the back end of the grid, Nico Hulkenberg in the second Haas and Alpine’s Pierre Gasly.&nbsp;

<h2>Tsunoda out</h2>

The race began in a festive atmosphere with Verstappen winning the start from pole-sitter Sainz to lead the run to the first corner where RB’s Yuki Tsunoda crashed out after making contact in the midfield squeeze.

The race was yellow-flagged to retrieve the debris. Replays showed he collided with Alex Albon's Williams going into the braking zone. Albon retired. &nbsp;

Verstappen accelerated as racing resumed on lap six with Sainz soon showing Ferrari’s potential and then sweeping inside him to lead on lap nine at Turn One.&nbsp;

The Dutchman fought but Sainz hung on and next time round on lap 10 Norris made a move at Turn Eight where Verstappen responded by forcing him wide and off-track.&nbsp;

Norris handed the place back.

"I was ahead the whole way through the corner," said the Briton. "This guy is dangerous. I have to avoid a crash. I’ll end up in the wall."&nbsp;

As they squabbled, Leclerc moved up to second while Norris tried again at Turn Four on the next lap only to be pushed off again.

"He overtook me off-track and pushed me off," said Norris.

The stewards noted both incidents and then issued Verstappen with a 10-second penalty for fouling Norris. "That’s quite impressive," said a sarcastic Verstappen.&nbsp;

Behind the leaders two-time former champion Fernando Alonso, in his record 400th Grand Prix weekend, pitted his Aston Martin and retired after 17 laps before a second stewards' penalty for Verstappen – a further 10 seconds for leaving the track and gaining an advantage.&nbsp;

After a flurry of pit stops Verstappen climbed to sixth as Norris chased Leclerc, passing him for second on lap 63 when the Monegasque slid wide at the final corner.

With five laps to go, Norris was seven seconds behind Sainz as Hamilton finally passed Russell for fourth, setting up a frantic finale.

F1: Carlos Sainz wins Mexico Grand Prix as Verstappen penalised for ‘ridiculous’ move

The elite of world football will gather in Paris on Monday for the Ballon d'Or ceremony, with Real Madrid forward Vinicius Junior the leading candidate for the men's award and Barcelona's Aitana Bonmati the hot favourite to win her second-successive crown.

The men's shortlist for the 2023/24 edition of the prestigious individual award is the first since 2003 to feature neither Lionel Messi nor Cristiano Ronaldo who hoovered up the prize 13 times between them.

Vinicius, the man who inherited Ronaldo's number seven shirt at Real Madrid, has been tipped by many pundits to succeed Messi as the Men's Ballon d'Or after a season in which he won the Spanish championship and Champions League.

"Vinicius is going to win (the Ballon d'Or)," Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti declared after his player netted a hat-trick in a 5-2 Champions League win against Borussia Dortmund last week.

"And not because of the three goals but because of his character. He's extraordinary."

If the 24-year-old Brazilian showed why he is expected to take Messi's crown in Madrid's stunning comeback midweek, he was less influential in Saturday's La Liga Clasico as Real were comprehensively beaten 4-0 by Barcelona.

But Vinicius' six goals last term were vital as Madrid lifted their 15th Champions League, with the attacker scoring a brace in the semi-final and a goal in the final.

Vinicius has also become a figurehead in the fight against racism after being targeted on numerous occasions since arriving in Spain in 2018.

He earned worldwide support in May 2023 when he squared off with Valencia supporters after suffering abuse at their Mestalla Stadium.

The players expected to challenge Vinicius for the Ballon d'Or are club-mate and England star Jude Bellingham, as well as Manchester City and Spain's Euro 2024-winning midfield general Rodri.

Also among the list of nominees are goal machines Erling Haaland, Harry Kane and Kylian Mbappe.

Real Madrid right-back Dani Carvajal has an outside shot, after a season which saw him lift the treble of La Liga, Champions League and European Championship.

In the Women's Ballon d'Or, 26-year-old Barcelona and Spain playmaker Bonmati is expected to retain the title she claimed for the first time last season.

She was again the outstanding player in a team which won its first continental quadruple of domestic league and cup, Spanish Supercopa and Champions League.

Barcelona's dominance of the women's game is reflected in the number of nominees the Catalan club boasts, with attackers Caroline Graham Hansen and Salma Paralluelo considered the two principal threats to their club-mate Bonmati.

The Ballon d'Or ceremony will take place in the centre of Paris on Monday where the winners, as decided by an international jury of football journalists, will be announced.

Brazil and Real Madrid winger Vinicius Jr leads race to win Men’s Ballon d’Or

Mohamed Salah's late equaliser earned Liverpool a 2-2 draw with rivals Arsenal in an entertaining Premier League encounter at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday, as Gabriel Magalhaes and Jurrien Timber limped off to add to the Gunners' injury woes.

Bukayo Saka gave Arsenal the lead in the ninth minute when he ran on to Ben White's ball over the top, cut inside Andy Robertson and fired past Caoimhin Kelleher at his near post for a 50th Premier League goal on his return from injury.

Virgil van Dijk, perhaps fortunate to avoid a card for a petulant kick at Kai Havertz in the opening exchanges, equalised nine minutes later, nodding home a Luis Diaz flick-on from a corner.

"I think to come back twice is a good thing, and we take the point and we move (on)," Van Dijk told Sky Sports.

Arsenal responded positively and spurned several half-chances, with Saka hitting a shot over the bar and Havertz unable to control Gabriel Martinelli's dangerous ball across the face of goal.

The home fans wanted a penalty just after the half-hour mark when Ibrahima Konate floored Martinelli with a clumsy challenge, but referee Anthony Taylor deemed he got enough of the ball, with Havertz slicing a volley over the top in the aftermath.

Mikel Merino scored his first Arsenal goal just before half-time, meeting Declan Rice's free-kick with a bullet header that was upheld after a lengthy VAR review for offside.

Liverpool improved after the break and Diaz went close five minutes after the restart following a mazy run along the touchline.

<h2>Arsenal ‘very disappointed’</h2>

Gabriel limped off early in the second half, replaced by Jakub Kiwior, as Arsenal sustained another injury to a key player. Recent returnee Timber followed him off later.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta will hope to soon welcome back captain Martin Odegaard, who has been out since September but said in the matchday programme that he is close to a return.

The hosts had to withstand considerable periods of pressure, though they threatened on the counter as Liverpool left gaps at the back.

Salah levelled the game in the 81st minute with a calm tap-in from Darwin Nunez's selfless cross, putting the Egyptian winger eighth on the all-time list and level with Robbie Fowler on 163 career Premier League goals.

The momentum seemed to be with Liverpool to clinch a comeback victory but Arsenal had the ball in the net at the death through a combination of Havertz and Gabriel Jesus, though referee Taylor had already blown for a foul.

Asked about the incident, Arteta said he did not know why a foul had been given in the build-up and declined to comment further.

The draw puts Liverpool second with 22 points from nine games, one point behind Manchester City, and Arsenal move into third with 18 points.

Arteta told reporters he was "very disappointed" his side did not win, but said: "Very proud of the team, especially with the situation that we are going through at the moment."

He added that he would prefer to be five points ahead of City rather than five behind, though he said: "The team is alive, the team wants it."

Liverpool's head coach Arne Slot said that, on balance, he was happy: "Going two times behind against a very strong and good Arsenal team, then to get a point is pleasing to see."

Premier League: Mohamed Salah’s late strike earns Liverpool a draw at Arsenal as Manchester City back on top

The Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) have retained five players ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction scheduled for late next month. With the newly-inducted franchise unlikely to keep their captain and star India player KL Rahul following several discussions between all parties concerned, LSG decided on retaining Nicholas Pooran, Mayank Yadav, Ravi Bishnoi and two uncapped Indian players – Mohsin Khan and Ayush Badoni, leaving them with an option of Right to Match (RTM) card at the auction.

With the retention deadline (Oct 31) fast approaching, all ten participating teams are bound to submit their final list before that. After SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH), LSG became the second team to submit their list. Unlike SRH, which made the retention cost for each player public, the exact amount of five players signed up by LSG remains unknown.

However, based on the retention slabs outlined by the IPL, INR 51 crore will be deducted from LSG’s auction purse. If the total amount paid to these five players exceeds this, more money will be deducted from the INR 120 crore purse allotted to all ten teams.&nbsp;

As reported by ESPNcricinfo, Pooran would be LSG’s first choice, followed by Mayank and Bishnoi. The left-handed batter was LSG’s second-highest run-scorer the past season behind KL Rahul and also kept wickets in Rahul's absence, who was out with a niggle.

Considered the best T20 batter at present, Pooran remains LSG’s mainstay for the next season. Since being picked for just INR 30 lakhs by Mumbai Indians (in 2017), Pooran’s price tag has continued to soar. While Punjab Kings bought him for INR 4.2 crore ($575,000 approx.) in 2019, for whom he made his IPL debut, SRH bagged his services for INR 10.75 crore ($1.433 million approx.) at the next mega auction in 2022, though they released him the following season.

In 2023, LSG bought Pooran for a whooping INR 16 crore (USD 1.927 million approx.), with his price likely to steep ahead of the upcoming mega auction.

While Mayank Yadav, picked for INR 20 lakh at the IPL 2024 auction, made headlines for throwing rockets at over 150 kmph and winning the Player of the Match award in his first two matches for bagging three wickets in each game, Bishnoi joined LSG in IPL 2022 after they picked him INR 4 crore.

Besides, Badoni and Mohsin, bought for INR 20 lakh each at the IPL 2022 auction, have been integral to their rise in the cash-rich league.&nbsp;

While Badoni is an aggressive middle-order player, known for his clean striking, the lanky left-arm seamer Mohsin impressed everyone in his maiden season for LSG, picking 14 wickets in nine contested matches.&nbsp;

Gary Kirsten has stepped down as Pakistan’s white-ball head coach with immediate effect. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) appointed Kirsten in April 2024 on a two-year deal, and six months into the job, the Protean decided to part ways just a week ahead of the Australia ODIs and T20Is. The board announced bowling coach Jason Gillespie as his replacement on an interim basis.

Following PCB’s decision to snatch away the selection powers from Kirsten and bowling coach Jason Gillespie, allotting it to the newly-formed selection committee, the rift began between all parties concerned. Though Kirsten remained quiet about this development, Gillespie tried concealing it in the lead-up to the third Test between Pakistan and England in Rawalpindi, saying his role is now reduced to a ‘match-day analyst’ and that ‘he didn’t sign up for this.’

The reports also suggested that the delay in the squad announcements for the Australia and Zimbabwe series was due to the animated discussions within the board, where Kirsten was keen to have his inputs taken into consideration.&nbsp;

On Sunday (Oct 27), at the time of unveiling Muhammad Rizwan as Pakistan’s new white-ball captain during a presser in Lahore, PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi was accompanied by Aaqib Javed, a new member of the selection committee and newly-appointed vice-captain Salman Agha. Head coach Kirsten was not even in the country at that time.

Meanwhile, shortly after Pakistan lost the first Test in Multan, an emergency meeting was called, where a new selection committee was formed, which included former cricketers and an ICC panel coach, Aleem Dar. With the PCB handing over the majority of powers to this new committee, which resulted in them winning their first series since 2021, thanks to fruitful changes to the playing XI and conditions for the remaining two Tests, the coaches felt sidelined with this call.

With regular coach Gautam Gambhir flying with the Test squad to Australia for the marquee five-match series beginning in Perth on November 22, Laxman filled in for him the way he did for ex-coach Rahul Dravid several times during his tenure.

Laxman will bring in Sairaj Bahutule, Hrishikesh Kanitkar and Subhadeep Ghosh as part of the backroom staff for Proteas T20Is, to be played in Durban, Gqeberha, Centurion and Johannesburg on November 8, 10, 13 and 15 respectively.&nbsp;

Ace Indian seamer Mohammed Shami missed out on making the 18-man squad for the Border-Gavaskar series against Australia starting November 22 in Perth. The BCCI selectors named a star-studded pace attack, with Jasprit Bumrah leading the bunch. Though Shami declared himself 100% match-fit during a promotional event in Gurugram the past week, the selectors decided against rushing him into playing Test cricket.

However, the latest reports suggest that all is not over for India quick, as he may link up with the BGT-bound Test squad midway into the Australia series after proving match fitness.&nbsp;

The right-arm seamer began bowling in the nets following the first Test against New Zealand in Bengaluru; after the second game ended in Pune, he resumed training, bowling to India batter Shubman Gill at full throttle.

Everyone around him has been working hard to ensure he hopefully gets to play the game against Karnataka from November 6.”

The Indian fast bowler wreaked havoc during the home World Cup last year, picking 24 wickets in just seven games, averaging 10.71. He bagged his career-best figures of 7/59 against New Zealand in Mumbai in the semis but failed to guide his team home against Australia in the summit clash.

Meanwhile, alongside Bumrah, Shami remains India’s top bowler across formats, with Test being his standout one. In 64 matches played thus far, Shami has picked 229 wickets, averaging close to 28.&nbsp;

Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti lamented his side's missed opportunities in their stunning 4-0 home defeat to bitter rivals Barcelona in a LaLiga Clasico on Saturday but said it was not all doom and gloom despite the result.

"It was an evenly played match, until they scored their first goal. We played with intensity in the first half but lacked a bit of accuracy. We had chances to take the lead but they scored two goals, which sapped our energy. That's when another game started," Ancelotti told a press conference of Robert Lewandowski's quick-fire double early in the second-half to set the LaLiga leaders Barca on course for a 4-0 thrashing.

Prior to that, the home side had dominated possession and missed various chances, mainly through off-form Kylian Mbappe. Lamine Yamal and Raphinha wrapped Barca's win later.

"We are hurt, it's a tough moment, but I want to thank the fans for their support. We don't have to throw everything away, because there is nothing to throw away," added a downhearted Ancelotti.

"We have to forget the last 30 minutes. The season is very long, we must not give up. We have to learn from it. It's time to bounce back. The season is long. We must not throw everything away. The team can do better and we will."

Ancelotti said he thinks Real Madrid deserved better and that he didn't believe the result told the true story of the match, but acknowledged that his team paid the price for missing so many chances.

"The result doesn't reflect what happened on the pitch. We couldn't take the lead and they went ahead and took it. The game, until the first goal, was very even and we had more chances," Ancelotti said, before commenting on Mbappe's lacklustre performance, being caught offside nine times.

"It was known that Barca use a high defence and we barely took advantage of it. (Mbappe) had chances and sometimes was offside, but he had three or four chances where he needed to be more accurate..."

Barca stretched their lead at the top with 30 points, six above Real who saw their 42-game unbeaten LaLiga run come to a bitter end after 13 months, leaving them one tantalizing positive result away from equalling the Catalans' league record of 43.

La Liga: Madrid’s Ancelotti laments missed chances in Barcelona thrashing at home

Barcelona's Robert Lewandowski scored a quick-fire second-half double to set the leaders on course for a 4-0 thrashing of Real Madrid that handed the hosts their first defeat in 42 LaLiga games in a sensational Clasico encounter on Saturday.

The Polish striker pounced with two goals in three minutes early in the second half before Lamine Yamal at 17 years and 106 days old became the youngest Clasico scorer and captain Raphinha wrapped up a comfortable win late on at a stunned Bernabeu.

Barca stretched their lead at the top with 30 points, six above Real who saw their unbeaten LaLiga run come to a bitter end after 13 months, leaving them one tantalising positive result away from equalling the Catalans' league record of 43.

After four consecutive Clasico defeats, Barcelona claimed their first triumph over Real since March 2023 in style with a clinical performance in which they were true to coach Hansi Flick's ideas of gambling with an aggressively high defence.

The visitors were more than comfortable playing on the counter-attack, exploiting the lightning speed of Raphinha and Yamal to help feed LaLiga top scorer Lewandowski.

Real were on top at the start but became frustrated as they wasted several chances, mainly through off form Kylian Mbappe who missed four clear opening from close-range and was caught offside nine times, including having two goals ruled out.

Despite Real dominating proceedings, Barca kept playing their risk-taking tactics and the gamble paid off when Lewandowski silenced the crowd with a two-goal blitz in the 54th and 56th minutes to reach 14 goals in 11 league games.

The hosts tried to get back into the contest but their batch of missed opportunities continued with Vinicius Jr, Jude Bellingham and Mbappe wasting clear openings that infuriated their fans, who started booing the players.

Barcelona kept playing their game and it was a matter of time until they ended the contest with two more goals on the counter through the precocious Yamal after 77 minutes and the ever dangerous Raphinha six minutes from time.

"We are very happy, very happy. To win here like this is a great victory," Lewandowski told DAZN. "The season is long, but this victory can help us with a lot more, with confidence and football ... so far we haven't won anything, but the important thing is that we have a clear idea, we know where we want to go on."

Mbappe's off key performance will have increased the growing concern in the Spanish capital over the France captain's slow start at Real since he arrived from Paris St Germain in June.

Three of the eight goals he has scored for Real in his first 13 games were penalties and he has found the net only once in the last five matches in all competitions.

Mbappe has struggled to connect with Vinicius Jr, Bellingham and Rodrygo up front, raising questions over how he fits into a Real team who have just enjoyed a successful season without him, having won a Champions League and LaLiga double.

El Clasico - Robert Lewandowski hits brace as Barcelona rout Real Madrid at Bernabeu

Former England captain Nasser Hussain has asked English players and the team management to stop thinking, talking or making decisions around just one series – the away Ashes later next year and instead should work hard on mending the issues. His remarks came after England succumbed to a Test series defeat against Pakistan despite leading it at one stage.

England hit the fourth-highest team total (823/7) in the first innings of the first Test in Multan, breaking countless records and winning the match on day five to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. Though they made several changes to their line-ups for the following two games, including bringing Ben Stokes into the playing XI, the touring side failed to stamp their authority and lost the series 1-2.

Pakistan’s spin duo of Noman Ali and Sajid Khan picked 39 off 40 wickets across two Tests, dismantling England’s batting since the Multan Test win. England captain Ben Stokes also admitted his team was outplayed in the series; moreover, he did not complain about the spin-friendly pitches in the country, saying Pakistan used the home conditions to their advantage, which should be the case everywhere.

However, reporting for Sky Sports, Hussain slammed the England Test team for thinking about the away Ashes all the time and not working on the mistakes, which has cost them plenty since.&nbsp;

“All we ever hear about with England is The Ashes, away [in 2025]. But we play so many series before The Ashes, and conditions here are so different from Australia,” Hussain said. “Someone like Zak Crawley, his position should come under threat, but when I say that, people say 'well, I think he'll be alright in Australia'. That doesn't matter here, this month. How are you going to play this month?

“How are you going to be consistent in these conditions? The same with Ollie Pope... it can't always be feast or famine with him. It can't just be about one series [The Ashes] every four years, away from home. You're almost not taking Pakistan seriously.

“Mistakes happen. That's part of sport. It's not about knocking the mistakes, because then you put fear in your side,” the former captain noted.

<h2>England out of WTC Final race</h2>

England played the most matches (19) compared to every team in the current cycle, and despite winning against West Indies and Sri Lanka at home earlier this year, they failed to stay alive in the WTC Final race.&nbsp;

England is placed sixth on the WTC points table with a PCT of 40.79. The only teams below England are Pakistan (33.33), Bangladesh (30.56) and West Indies (18.52).

Meanwhile, England’s next Test series is an away tour of New Zealand.&nbsp;

‘Stop thinking about away Ashes, concentrate on problems at hand’ – Hussain to England after PAK series loss

As Australia gears up for the home Tests against India starting November 22 in Perth, head coach Andrew McDonald has hinted at including uncapped opener Sam Konstas in the squad for the Border-Gavaskar series. Konstas, 19, has made headlines back home with successive hundreds in his first Sheffield Shield game this season, followed by a gritty 43 against Victoria on a tricky MCG pitch.

Since David Warner’s retirement from Tests earlier this year, Australia tried Steve Smith at the top, an experiment that failed, with Smith returning to his preferred number four position for five Tests against India. Though the selectors have kept a close eye on other contenders to partner Usman Khawaja at the top, including Marcus Harris, Cameron Bancroft and Matthew Renshaw, the focus has shifted to Konstas, who is likely to make his Australia debut next month.

Meanwhile, Konstas will play for Australia A against India A in Mackay on Thursday (Oct 31).&nbsp;

The right-handed batter has featured in just six first-class matches thus far, with McDonald admitting his lack of experience will not stop the selectors from naming him in the Test side should they consider him the ideal choice to fill the vacant spot.

"I think we're picking the best team for here and now, and if that does encompass a younger player, then we'll head down that direction," McDonald said during a chat with ABC's Offsiders.&nbsp;

"And clearly Sam Konstas, on the back of his first Shield match, and the way he went about his work in the second innings at the MCG against Scott Boland, has definitely made some noise.

"I've heard people commentating 'do you protect the player?' If they're ready, they're ready in our mind, and if Sam's capable and we feel as though is capable to fill that spot I don't think that the opponent should come into the equation,” he continued.

<h2>Sam’s mentor Watson backs Konstas’ selection</h2>

Sam’s mentor and former Australia great Shane Watson also advocated for his selection for the Border-Gavaskar series, with McDonald saying they will not protect any player from any opponent, and knowing India is the strongest opponent, what’s better than playing him at home?&nbsp;

"I think it's purely is this player good enough to play Test cricket?" McDonald said.&nbsp;

"You've got to start against someone, and you shouldn't be holding back and protecting someone from a potential opponent, and India is a strong opponent, but also, the advantage of a player playing in Australia for their first Test summer is that the conditions are familiar. What better place to start than in your own backyard,” he continued.

Meanwhile, besides Perth, Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, and Sydney are the remaining four venues for India Tests.&nbsp;
