The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has intercepted consignments of captagon, popularly known as the ‘Jihadi drug’, and millions of opioid tablets worth more than N6.2 billion at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos. The agency also arrested a suspected cross‑border drug kingpin and recovered cocaine, heroin and other illicit substances in separate operations across the country. In a statement on Sunday, the NDLEA said its operatives seized the captagon shipment at the Lagos airport on Saturday, August 22, 2026, following the arrest of a 49‑year‑old man who arrived from Accra, Ghana, aboard an African World Airlines flight. A search of his carton of local bathing soap, popularly known as “Ghana Soap”, led to the discovery of 47,200 pills of Captagon concealed inside blocks of soap. The agency valued the consignment at more than N1.5 billion. 1855

Families of missing persons and human rights groups held a demonstration in Mexico City on Sunday, emphasizing what they say is the Mexican state’s responsibility regarding the country’s more than 130,000 disappearances—whether through omission or direct culpability. The march, held on the International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances (August 30), moved from the Ángel de la Independencia along Paseo de la Reforma to the Hemiciclo a Benito Juárez and the Zócalo, with participants carrying photos and posters of their loved ones under the slogan “Hagámosles Visibles” (“Let’s Make Them Visible”). Organizers including the Movimiento por Nuestros Desaparecidos en México (MNDM) demanded the government move from “administering the crisis” to delivering results in prevention, immediate searches, effective investigations, dignified identification and justice.

Search and rescue efforts continued at the hydro power plant in Nepal’s Trishuli where over 100 people were thought to be trapped. Authorities in Nepal were warning of possible fresh flooding on Sunday and urged residents in flood‑affected districts to remain on high alert after water levels rose in the Bhotekoshi River. The Nepal Army has been using drilling equipment to reach workers inside the Trishuli‑3A tunnel, where crews have created an opening to pump in air and drop food but have yet to make contact with those inside. More than 900 hydropower workers remain missing across several sites, and the disaster management authority said water levels in the Trishuli River downstream have risen up to 3 metres above normal.

Wildfire hits Indonesia’s Central Borneo province in Pulang Pisau Regency. Indonesia, a vast archipelago, has for weeks battled wildfires that have led to school closures and thousands of people requiring medical treatment, with smoke also reaching neighbouring Malaysia and Singapore. The health ministry said 3.4 million people across seven provinces on Borneo and Sumatra were at risk of respiratory infections, with air quality in parts of Central Kalimantan reaching hazardous levels (API 573–877). More than 200,000 hectares have burned since January, driven by El Niño–fueled dry conditions, prompting Indonesia to deploy additional troops, helicopters for water‑bombing and cloud‑seeding operations, while Malaysia closed nearly 600 schools in Sarawak and Singapore issued health advisories.
